I like that quote. It says a lot about passivity versus action. Want to fit in? Join Canyon Lake’s massive ranks of volunteers who do something. But as the late Rachel Scott of Columbine taught us through her journal at the Community Coalition (RachelsChallenge.org), “something” doesn’t have to be big.

If you see injustice, speak out. You know it when you see it – adults and kids alike. It’s not necessarily easy sometimes, but it’s not complicated. The only hope to stop bullies of all ages is to report it to authorities. One sheriff tells parents of the victim to file a formal police report each time so there’s a record. Good advice.

Hopefully teens will remember the seriousness of the Colum-bine lesson and the depth of damage a bully can cause. Even with no physical threat, don’t tolerate bullies that surface anywhere. Girls can be abusive simply with words. Boys and girls bullied by siblings, their peers – or their parents – with damaged self-esteem can be-come prey for bullies. Weakened victims often don’t know that the impaired bullies target vunerable ones because bullies are the weak-est of all. Report injustice. Notice good and spread strength with praise.

Bob Slocum, CEO for the New Life Treatment Center for Girls, is our Canyon Lake Community Profile for December. He is helping girls at New Life rebuild their sense of self worth, before they head for foster care or a group home. Annual fundraisers are underway to help these kids and others at Christmas who often have no one. Read more about them on our Just For Kids & The Community page. Offer your help. There are holiday opportunities to give back.

As the end of the year nears, these kids face a new beginning – it’s hopeful but surely hard to look forward past Christmas. Hav-ing nothing is bad, having no one is worse. If you’re alone for the holidays, choose a local Christmas celebration and pitch in – at the school, the library, or help a senior – offer just a little to test the wa-ters. Your lighter step will show you the Christmas spirit in you is still there. Participate. You’ll enjoy it more than you would ever expect.

As a reminder to you and me, don’t forget to count your blessings – often. It’s the easiest way to turn your day or your life around. If you catch me frowning, kindly remind me what will bring back my smile. Knowing you read this counts, but it will show me you care and that’s better. Little things make a world of difference.

As Rachel would say, do some thing kind and show that you care. Just be sure you start today.

suffered in their short years

In one view, Bob Slocum has been finding pieces of a puzzle over time that’s starting to take form, with the remaining pieces expected to complete the final as-yet-unknown picture. But in reality, he is simply “building a home – not a structure, but a feeling that we all know of as “home.” Bob, now CEO, was Program Director at New Life Treatment Center for Girls for 11 years. They house 80 girls, up from 40 back then.

He has heard some refer to him as “the barn guy” – vaguely aware of his vision to build a barn full of farm animals for the girls to care for and love, but that misses 90% of what Bob does. With no replace-ment Program Director yet, Bob does all he did then but with slightly broader oversight. One difference he considers unmatchable is that he now meets the “major volunteers” who make up the Board and can share his vision or concerns face to face.

“New Life generates a level of commitment like I’ve never seen,” Bob explains. “There were days I was down on my hands and knees – and I’ve worked at a number of residential treatment centers over 30 years ... Whoever works here has a sense of ownership and personal pride.” All staffing areas are involved and integrated. The housekeeping crew leaves notes for the girls who do what they should that can be trans-ferred into “points for good behavior” they spend at the Points Store.

Bob was born in Germany to an American father and German mother; he lived in Germany twice and attended high school there, but graduated in Massachusetts – he’s a naturalized citizen and laughs that he carries a “brown card.” Bob has a BS in Biology and Psychology from Southwest Texas in San Marcos, where he met Sharon. They married 29 years ago and moved to the lake in the early 80’s; their daughter, Natalie, is a junior at Smithson Valley. Rural life growing up formed Bob’s belief that the (mostly) unchanging laws that govern both nature and animals provide troubled kids with a feeling of security.

His use of farm animals versus pets was innovative and propelled programs he was designing beyond teaching skills to supplement therapy and became therapy. He builds trust with complete structure and routine, confidence with responsibility of feeding and grooming, pride with Blue Ribbons from Show competition, self-esteem from success, self-assurance to prevent exploitation again. They saved baby goats, “Encha” and “Lada” destined for a Mexican food dish from slaughter, helped fragile baby chicks grow into hens that lay free range eggs they now sell, and found ways to de-stress like petting the soft coat of a prize breeding rabbit – one of so many that Bob has lost count. The Serenity Barn – the name the girls chose for the barn speaks volumes. Results are undeniably dramatic with 24 of 80 scheduled to leave early.

Bob has seen a lot of changes at New Life over 11 years; as the impetus for many, there’s a little bit of Bob left behind all over the site. While he didn’t do it all, and by far, not alone, he has played an integral part in the small and big picture that’s saved the lives and spirits of hundreds of young girls – by using his ideas, his influence, his connections, and sometimes his hands working construction tools.

Bob re-secured the Points Store when it floated in the Big Flood on the day it opened. There’s a 10-foot iron smoker on wheels he found through a friend that replaced the ten little barrel smokers he used to use to barbecue for the girls, family-style, on most Friday afternoons. They enjoy eating under the pavillon he got funding for to replace the smaller aging gazebo. That’s how he learned to lay a floor – skilled volunteers taught him while they completed the decking. Bicycles in the bike rack, some out of kilter, would fit at any family function.

Bob says the therapists don’t expect to fix the wound in months that took a lifetime of pain to develop. They hope to make the girls good caretakers of the wound while they heal. Primarily they hope to teach the girls, Bob says, “to stop beating themselves up and not allow that part of their life to define them.” A key word here is “allow” to remind each girl that she is in control by virtue of having that choice. They want the girls to know that, as this part of the journey passes, this won’t be the last trauma of life. “We hope to help them develop a sense of resiliency and inner strength to weather the next storm.”

One they all weathered together stands out. The New Life crew was prepared when the Corp of Engineers ordered mandatory evacuation of River Road when water breached the spillway of Canyon Dam in 2002. Over 30 staff members, all the girls “and stuff ” evacuated to Corpus Christi in buses at 2am. Searching for rooms on the 4th of July, they found two. The staff had a “boys” room and a “girls” room; the New Life girls were housed in a gymnasium for two weeks and then were moved to a TLU dorm. New Life lost three buildings, several had water to the roof line, and the Points Store floated to where it lives today. Volunteers and crew (and Bob) worked feverishly getting the site ready to get the girls “back home before the year ended”– in time for Christmas. Returning to the safe haven they considered “home” on December 23rd was a heartfelt homecoming for the girls and staff.

The community has responded greatly to the needs of the girls but others came up during the tour: donations to restock the Points Store – items must meet certain specs; a certified lifeguard over 21 who needs a $12/hour summer job so they can swim at home next summer; a new roof or repairs to the Life Skills building to end the search for an evasive leak; a sound expert to rid one of the dorms of bellowing echoes; an organic gardener to help get the nice greenhouse functional; and speakers who can teach the girls about donkeys and subjects Bob doesn’t know as well as others. What would Bob want for Christmas–beyond recovery for the girls, of course? “A milk-producing Jersey or Holstein” – so the girls can learn to milk! He didn’t say if he expects anyone to drink the raw milk it produces, but it’s one more skill the girls can be confident few others will know.

The quote by Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing” is relevant to Bob and his “crew.” Evil doesn’t triumph at New Life because quite a few good men and women who care have done so much more than nothing.

The New Life Treatment Center has begun an “Adopt a Cottage for Christmas” effort – for an estimated $250 commitment per cottage that will supplement what the women in business volunteers do. If you would like to contribute or can help Bob with some of the tasks

the facility needs, please call 830-964-4390. If Bob doesn’t hear from you soon, he will undoubtably figure it out and get it done.

holidays approach and we starts think-ing about the best gifts we can give our loved ones, we should broaden our ho-rizons and think beyond jewelry, elec-

tronics and clothes. I am thinking of the gift of peace of mind when times get hard. In my practice, I have come across many situations of one spouse becoming mentally incapacitated or dying, leaving the other spouse totally clueless about what to do and where things are. Those people were in positions of power and control in their professions. They naturally took control of the family finances and thought they were immortal and indestructible. Here are a few simple but powerful action steps that will show how loving and considerate you are of your spouse’s future well being.

Financial Information Sourcebook: This is simply a note-book (or secure computer file) that contains a listing of all fi-nancial holdings, accounts, insurance policies, etc. At the very least, you should include the name and contact information of the institution, description of the asset, account or policy num-ber and location of any documents pertaining to each asset. And let’s not forget User ID’s and passwords to access these institutions online. Imagine how grateful your healthy spouse will be not to have to go through every desk drawer and every file cabinet looking for things after you have just died or suf-fered a stroke and lost your mental capacity.

Last Will and Power of Attorney: Many people wrongly as-sume that spouses can sign each other’s names or act on behalf of one another simply because they are spouses. Not so in re-ality. Similarly, spouses cannot authorize medical or surgical procedures without a written document, prepared in advance, signed and witnessed when you still had your full mental ca-pacity. So, preparing a will, a financial and a medical power of attorney will go a long way towards easing the burden that your spouse will be saddled with at the most difficult time in her/his life.

Life, Disability and Long Term Care Insurance: This is the subject of protecting against the risk of depleting the family as-sets as a result of your death or disability. It is critically impor-tant to work with a trusted advisor to determine whether you have sufficient assets, and can be fully or partially self insured. Then consider the use of insurance to cover any shortfall.

We are lucky enough ...by Bill Goetz

I have always felt that “if you are lucky enough to live at Canyon Lake . . . well, then you are just lucky enough”. With a new year poking its head around the corner and the holiday season in full swing, it is a great time to reminisce and

give thanks for important things like family, friends and what we all share here in Canyon Lake. Canyon Lake is a unique community due in part to the fact that a vast majority of our residents are here because they “choose” to live here. They also have an overwhelming love of community and America which will help all to weather the current storm of class warfare placed upon us. I know many residents where 60 to 100 mile round trip commutes are the daily norm. On my wife’s, daily return trip from New Braunfels , she hits that last red light at HWY 46 / FM 2722 . . . headed to the country! The car goes on auto-pilot and she on auto-attitude adjustment. They all say the same thing, “living in Canyon Lake makes it all worth while”.

When you think about it, we pretty much have it all right here. Aside from the shear beauty of the hill country scenery and small community feel, Canyon Lake has a robust busi-ness climate that eliminates the need to travel very far for most needed services. We have a very active Chamber of Com-merce that provides many business and social benefits for our area, a robust recreational industry, two wonderful grocery and hardware stores at our fingertips, some of the best automotive service folks around, a plethora of banks, good restaurants that provide almost every cuisine, and some of the best hamburgers anywhere. We have vibrant religious communities from most every denomination, great shopping at the lake and within a short drive, two major airports within 45 - 90 minutes . . . and the most knowledgeable and professional realtors as anywhere. How could we be any luckier than that?

Well, it is time to get back on message before the word-count meister gets me. With travel increasing over the holiday season, it is a good time to get that required check-up and maintenance performed on your vehicle before you get on the road. Have a safe and happy Christmas season.

Everyone should know their credit scores. Many clients come to me because they have been turned down for a loan. Often you can work wonders with your credit score by doing a few things.

Knowing your score allows you to get it right before you apply for something like a house loan. There are many websites that say free credit report. This is not true, but for $5 or $10 bucks you can get a copy from the big three credit reporters which – if you are able to decipher it – will tell you what is con-tributing to your bad score. Then you can take action to fix it.

Recently I had a client with a $9,000 charge of that was kill-ing his credit score. It was for a lease he busted out of while in college, where all four roommates were jointly and sever-ally liable (everyone is responsible for all monies due on the lease). Although we addressed a number of other issues where we settled some accounts for pennies on the dollar, the broken lease was killing his score and no one would rent to him.

What a lot of people do not know is the landlord has a le-gal obligation to mitigate the damages. They moved out due to what I call a “bust up” amongst roommates – pretty common in college and for that matter even later in life with live in girl/boyfriends and the like. After a little research, I found that the apartment was leased six days after they moved out, and in fact, the landlord had lost no money. Naturally the landlord had kept each of their $395 deposits for failure to pay rent. After contact-ing the landlord my client and his buddies were refunded all of their deposits, and the landlord agreed to show the account paid as agreed. In the end, his credit score went from 500’s to high 600’s.

Another issue is debt that is not yours – or flat falsification – and mistakes. They must prove the debt was owed to them which they often cannot do. They must notify the credit scor-er’s, if it is disputed, and if they fail to correct, they can be in violation of state and federal “Fair Debt Collection” laws that provide for penalties and in some cases restitution to the credi-tor who was wrongfully reported in a negative light.

Know your score and know your rights.

Loss of Use coverage is designed to help you out if you are unable to use your home. It is set up to reimburse you for additional living expenses that you may incur while you are forced to live away from home. This would be due to unfit living conditions that are the direct result of a covered loss. Also be sure you’re aware of what constitutes a covered loss. Some policies only cover certain things; these are called Named Peril policies. Then there are those that cover almost anything that could cause damage to your home, these are called All Risk policies. These topics will be discussed in future columns.

In last month’s column, we talked about being ready for a di-saster and I mentioned that my parents were evacuated during the fires in Bastrop. The fire came within three blocks of their home, and they were forced by authorities to evacuate immediately. Since they were unable to use their home, they were able to file a claim on the Loss of Use coverage on their homeowner’s policy.

In my parent’s case, since they were forced out of their home and didn’t have much time to collect all of their personal belong-ings, they had to rent a motel room for several nights, eat out at restaurants and even go buy a few necessities. Their insurance re-imbursed them for all of these necessary expenses.

It’s very important that we all have our ducks in a row, so to speak, because disaster can strike anywhere at any moment. Be sure that you have Loss of Use on your homeowners or renters policy. The loss of use amount should be listed on the declarations page of your home policy.

But what if you’re a landlord and have renters in your home? In this event, you may also claim Loss of Use. The insurance compa-ny will allow for Fair Rental Reimbursement, to help recover loss of income due to unlivable conditions for your tenants. So check your policy documents and make sure you’re clear as to whether or not you have Loss of Use coverage.

Most people outside of the veterinary world have never heard of Leptospirosis… so what is it? It is a type of bacteria known as a

spirochete. It affects dogs most often, and can be life threatening! It is spread amongst wildlife, and we have plenty of that around here! Rats, raccoons, skunk, and deer (to name a few) can be carriers of the bacteria. This means they have the bacteria living in their kid-neys, but not at a level that makes them sick. They shed the bacteria in the environment through their urine.

Dogs usually become infected with Leptospirosis by having con-tact with standing water that is contaminated, either by drinking the water or by having an abrasion on their skin that the bacteria can penetrate. For this reason, more cases of Leptospirosis are reported in spring and fall months when wildlife are more active and rain is more abundant.

Once infected, dogs can show a wide variety of symptoms which makes an early diagnosis challenging for your veterinarian. Symp-toms can include vomiting, fever, joint pain, muscle tenderness, and lethargy. Eventually, leptospirosis does the most damage in the kid-neys and can cause acute kidney failure. Fortunately, leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics and intravenous fluid therapy. Howev-er, many times irreversible kidney damage has already occurred by the time treatment is started, making this a potentially fatal infection.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease meaning people can contract it as well. Any dog suspected of having leptospirosis should have its urine handled appropriately by veterinary health care professionals.

Luckily, there is a canine vaccine for Leptospirosis that should be administered at least once a year to prevent infection. When this vaccine first came to the market many years ago, it developed a bad reputation for causing vaccine reactions and for not covering the more common strains (serovars) of leptospirosis that we see here in the US. Fortunately, in recent years newer versions of the vaccine have become available that rarely cause reaction. And, the new vac-cines also include the most common strains of the bacteria dogs are infected with in the US, making them much more effective.

I recommend most dogs in our area be vaccinated. Please ask your veterinarian for more information.

Richard Ferrell is the Executive Director at the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please call 830-964-2223 or visit CanyonLakeChamber.com.

Looking for a Christmas present? Join-ing your Canyon Lake Chamber of Com-merce may just be one of the best gifts that you can get for you or your business. It of-fers many benefits which may be unknown to the community and business owners. How does your chamber of commerce help you or your business?

Newcomers. The chamber of commerce offers business referrals to people who are new to the Canyon Lake area. If your business is a member of the chamber, you will get business referrals when someone calls the chamber asking where they can get the product or service that you provide. With so many businesses competing for the new business in our area, joining the chamber can be a relatively inexpensive way of getting referrals.

Business-to-Business Referrals . Do you remember last month’s article, “Think Local, Buy Local, & Be Local?” People like to do business with people that they know and can trust. If you attend chamber events, you will get to know a variety of people. When you need a service, use one of your chamber colleague’s services and chances are, they won’t forget. Even if they don’t personally need your service, they may refer you to their friends, family and acquaintances.

Just to stay in touch. Our fellow neighbors in the community who just want to stay in touch or want to be active members of the community can become members of the chamber also. They are referred to as “Friends of the Chamber.” Friends of the Chamber can stay in touch with what’s going on in the community, hear about new business openings and are invited to our mixers.

In addition to helping visitors who walk through – or who hit on our busy website – find you, the Chamber of Commerce also provides a lot of useful information and benefits to the community. With our basic business membership at $160 or participating as a “Friend of the Chamber” for only $50 a year, there’s no better value than investing in your community. Whether it’s through our direc-tory of businesses, our listings of community events, or our many networking events, the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce is here to unite and help our community grow.

If you or your partner snores, you both are likely tired – and unhealthy. The partner – because interrupted sleeps makes one irri-table, and stressed – but the snorer has big-ger problems. Heavy breathers during sleep may experience daytime fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, 4AM bathroom trips, occa-sional insomnia, acid reflux, nasal conges-

tion and/or sexual dysfunction.Often throat snorers have apnea. Certainly generalized poor

muscle tone extends to oral and throat muscles and contributes to a narrowing or collapsing airway, called apnea, but there are many other reasons one develops apnea. During episodes, which can happen hundreds of times a night, blood oxygen levels dive. Sensing eminent death, damaging stress hormones flood the body to force it to breathe. Strangely, the snorer is usually unaware of disturbed sleep.

Apnea brings triple the risk of heart attack, a high rate of seri-ous car crashes and diabetes. Suspect apnea in children who bed wet, grind teeth, seem consistently sleepy, or have ADHD or poor school performance.

Quite often, snorers also mouth-breathe during the day. Their breaths are shallow and double the rate of a nasal breather, so they blow off excessive carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is a criti-cal pH buffer, helps release ammonia waste, calms involuntary muscles, dilates blood vessels (i.e. lowers blood pressure), and releases oxygen from red blood cells into vital organs. Without oxygen, cells starve.

CO2 also helps relieve nasal congestion/inflammation. If you mouth-breathe, you have more nasal congestion, which … en-courages mouth breathing. One must learn to nasal breathe to normalize breathing volume and frequency, clear nasal passages, and to experience a relaxing, quiet night’s sleep. To learn how and to reset breathing rhythms in the brain, try the Buteyko Breathing Method. (Book/DVD on loan with deposit.) Expected results are 75% less snoring within two weeks, deeper sleep, improved en-ergy levels – and a happier partner. Silent Nights everyone!

by Theresa CastanadaThere is a saying that “When the

times get tough, the tough get going!’”Times are tough today, and with

the 2011 Christmas season approach-ing, gift giving might be harder for some this year requiring more thought about, not only what to give, but also giving in general. This is where the

tough get going, because they’re thinking outside of the box! No pun intended there, because an envelope will do!

There are many ways to lessen the stress and financial burden of giving this year while lessening the stress of the recipient as well. To help you out here, why not give the gift of genuine con-cern for others – a gift that’s produced right here in our own com-munity. Yes, think about supporting local small businesses that provide a service. There are many personal services available that are used daily by everyone. Massage therapy, for example, is just one of them.

Massage therapy is not just for the rich and famous; everyone is entitled and encouraged to receive massages on a regular sched-ule. Massage therapy is a service that has many health benefits, especially when that massage is scheduled monthly. Research con-firms it improves circulation, joint range of motion and flexibility. It can reduce many common ailments such as stress, muscle tight-ness, aches and pains – even anxiety and depression.

Massage is great for the hairdresser that stands all day long with arms elevated at shoulder height or for the stay at home moms that juggle childcare, housekeeping and after school activ-

With Christmas just weeks away, here are essential tips for buying an affordable laptop for yourself or someone special. Budget laptops cost around $350-$500 and are great for browsing the Web, emailing, composing documents, and editing simple photos.

Weight ranges from three to six pounds. Frequent travel-ers will want a lighter model. Screen dimensions vary be-tween 12 to 17 inches, affecting weight and overall size. Choose a screen that is large enough for easy reading. With a smaller screen, you can save weight and money. If $500 is your limit, a Mac laptop by Apple won’t be an option. The least expensive Apple laptop currently runs $1,000, al-though you do get a lot for your money.

For under $400, you’ll see mostly Intel Pentium proces-sors. You’ll see prefixes like P, T, SU and B. The P and T se-ries Pentiums are older, rebranded Core 2 Duo processors. They will work for basic tasks. Avoid the SU and Celeron, Intel’s budget chips. The B-series chips have similarities to the more powerful Core i5 and i7 processors. The B-series is your best bet. You’ll also see AMD chips with names like Turion II, Athlon II, Phenom II families, and the newer A-series. Avoid the Sempron, AMD’s budget chip.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit is the standard Op-erating System (OS) on almost any new laptop. Most new laptops are shipping with 3GB or 4GB of ram - more is bet-ter. Most laptops have 250GB to 500GB hard drives which are adequate.

Choose a computer with a DVD/CD burner which en-ables you to create discs and load programs. The smallest laptops may not have a burner. Wireless is now standard on all new laptops. You can connect to your own wireless network and use Wi-Fi hotspots at libraries, airports, and other locations.

Keyboard size may be important. Some laptops have full-sized keyboards while others are 90% or smaller. Webcams with above 1 megapixel resolution are better for clearer video chatting. Some laptops also offer better speakers or more USB ports. Make sure you know what you’re getting and choose based on what’s important to you.

Swat Techby Terry Schroller

No! No! No! Read it again. I did not say squat. I said S-W-A-T. Yes fellow humanoids (and I use that term loosely), there is a particular discipline to swat-ting something correctly. Got your at-tention now, don’t I?

Let us begin. First, you must know thy enemy. Education, as always, is the key to success. After years of intense research (OK, so simple things entertain me), I have developed certain stalking/swatting methods.

You do not approach a roach the same as you would a fly. A fly can see a full 360°. That adds up to about a bazillion images of you. Whoa! Consequently, they can react much quicker than expected. Try this. Swat at the fly simultaneously with two objects. This confuses their receptors and buys you a little time. Nothing worse than confused receptors. Ever hap-pen to you?

Roaches and scorpions require a completely different tech-nique. We’ll call this the “roach approach” and will work on scorpions as well. Roaches and scorpions have very poor eye-sight. They can barely tell the difference between light and darkness. Fortunately, they cannot get the government to pay for corrective lenses yet, so we’re OK for now. However, they are extremely sensitive to air currents, humidity, temperature and vibrations. So, don’t go jumping around flapping your wings and screaming and hollering like a blithering idiot while looking for a swatting device. Save all that commotion for your next spousal encounter. Instead, sneak up very slow-ly, calculating the most optimum swatting position as you go. When within striking distance of said adversary do not start your swing way above your head like your trying to drive a stake into Dracula’s heart. Get real close ever so slowly with your striking device. Then when you’re with in mere inches, let ‘em have it. I guarantee your kill ratio will greatly increase.

If you’re too much of a spaz or want to have a lot of fun, go for the ultimate in fire power. I’m talking “The Koolatron Lentek Biteshield RZOZ Electronic Racket Zapper!” Yeah, baby! I’m not making this up. I suggest holding the button down for a complete annihilation and cremation.

Happy hunting.

Ah, the Christmas List! Let’s see, tree, ornaments, eggnog, comfort food, lights, toys and let’s see… there was something else… Oh yeah! Batteries!

It just wouldn’t be Christmas without batteries. Look around at everything in the house that re-quires battery power: the cameras, the TV remotes, some ornaments, most of the toys… the list goes on and on, but do your batteries go on and on?

How can you get more life out of your batteries? Bat-teries are not all created equal – every battery is not suit-ed to every job. Batteries mismatched with the items that need them can run them down quickly. Knowing how to select the right batteries for the job and how to store them properly will save you time and money.

New products just out of the box will come with in-formation as to what size and type batteries are required to make that product a functioning unit for the fam-ily. Pay very close attention to this information. If you haven’t already, start a file (or a kitchen drawer) to keep toy, TV, etc, instructions for future reference.

Your local hardware store always has fresh batteries of all sizes on hand to help you keep things running. If you have a toy or electronic something that you do not run all the time, take the batteries out and store them in a plastic bag taped to the item. Do not store batteries any-where they can come in contact with other metal objects as this will drain their power, short them out or cause them to start leaking.

There are two schools of thought storing batteries in the refrigerator or freezer. Some experts say “yes,” some say “no.” I’ll leave that up to you. I keep my extras in a box in the pantry and they seem to do fine there. You should, however, be sure to keep them out of the heat. Heat is one of the biggest factors that work against bat-teries.

Avoid mixing old and new batteries or even different brands. These combinations can cause chemical issues and result in leaky batteries that can ruin your equip-ment.

Be sure you have enough batteries for the holidays!

since 1973

A lot of our business is servicing audio and video systems that were never com-pleted, having issues and need repair or were never hooked up properly to begin

with. Here are some tips that I hope you will find helpful and may save you from a costly issue in the future such as a service call or replacement of a device.

Get the dust off, your electronic equipment has vent holes to help it cool itself and over the years dust can build up. The easiest way to clean a device for example a DVD player is too wipe off the dust with a slightly damp soft cloth, I rec-ommend at least every six months. You can also use a can of compressed air to blow the dust from inside the unit, but keep in mind this blows the dust everywhere so be prepared.

The back of your TV also has cooling vents that collect dust so the same method applies if you can get to the back of your TV. Dust can build up in electronics and slowly over heat them. To properly clean your flat screen TV, do not use chemicals unless it is made exclusively for TV screens. Again a slightly damp soft cloth will do the trick and remember do not rub hard.

Proper cooling also includes not stacking hot equipment on top of each other. You might consider using something to pro-vide an inch or two of space between the units.

Don’t forget your surge protectors! Your equipment can get damaged from under voltage and over voltage. Do you ever notice your lights dim half way and then back? That is a under voltage. Maybe you notice your lights get a little brighter for a second or two that is an over voltage. Also other electrical devices can cause noise on your power line.

Over extended periods of time electronics can fail from these problems. A good surge protector (not a power strip) with a noise filter can protect against this. Extend the life of all your new electronics by taking care and taking precautions!

With the holiday season upon us, remember that calling a professional can take away the headache and frustration in set-ting up your new electronic toys, so you can sit back and enjoy the holidays with family and friends!”

ProQualityWater Systems

by Randy Lawrence

Depending upon the quality of your water supply, water treatment systems can range in size from compact units designed to be tucked away in a small

closet to multiple pieces of equipment requiring a large area. Often a system will have been modified over time with plumb-ing repairs, and the addition or replacement of equipment.

In many cases, these modifications are done in a way which makes the installer’s job as easy as possible. Simply connect-ing a brand new softener to an existing maze of old pipe or run-ning unsupported pipes at odd angles to connect a new piece of equipment are examples of shortcuts which demonstrate a lack of concern for the finished product. The result is a pieced together system which makes access for service difficult, and typically takes up far more space than necessary. While the operation of the equipment and the product water quality are the most pressing concerns, it is almost as important that the system be simple and streamlined to eliminate problems when the need arises for maintenance or service.

When discussing the work to be performed, you should ad-dress any concerns you may have about the current system, and clarify the scope of work to be done. If a piece of equip-ment is to be replaced, ask how the new connections will be made. Also, be sure to ask what will happen to the old unit.

Many times, the equipment will be simply left in the im-mediate area for the homeowner to dispose of. Obviously, it affects the equipment dealer’s bottom line to perform work beyond a simple “cut and paste” installation, but it’s reason-able to expect your water system to be carefully planned and installed in a user-friendly and space efficient manner. It usu-ally takes a little more time, and a few additional fittings, but when the technician puts forth the extra effort to simplify the system, it can make a world of difference.

If you’re concerned about the treatment equipment you cur-rently have, a trained and licensed professional can suggest ways to improve the layout, performance, and overall efficien-cy of your system.

When you select carpet, you generally buy it with the expectation that your new carpet will look just like the sample in the store and last for many years. To help meet your expectations, it’s best to have some general knowledge about the different characteristics of carpet before making your selections.

Yarn twist. Tighter is better. The tighter the twist the longer the carpet will perform before it begins to crush and matt.

Short nap. The shorter the pile height, the more crush resistant and longer the “like new appearance” of your carpet will last.

Stitches per inch. Carpet that has more yarn per inch will also be more crush and matt resistant.

Some of the common types of carpet construction and their main features are as follows:

Cut pile saxony. Surface has a smooth appearance. It is generally made with nylon, wood or polyester fibers. Works well with tradi-tional or formal room settings.

Textured or frieze. Surface appearance is textured which lends it-self to a casual appearance. Won’t show vacuum cleaner marks or footprints and is a good choice for active areas of your home.

Cut and uncut pattern. An intermixed look and cut pile creates a patterned design. Usually constructed in multi colors. Helps hide foot prints in traffic areas.

Level look. The loops are the same size; it is usually constructed with a polypropylene olefin carpet fiber – often called commercial carpet – which is extremely durable and great for family rooms.

Multi loop. This carpet is the same as above except the loops are several different heights.

Today’s carpet manufacturers are offering more design and color choices than ever. They are combining softer fiber with better built-in stain resistance to make your carpet look and perform for many years. With today’s new carpet backing that helps block odors, spills and more, your carpet will look better, while helping your home smell fresh and clean.

Nationally, carpet is 70% of all floor covering sales. In the south-west, carpet is used more for bedrooms with wood and tile in living areas. With new technology, carpet will perform in all areas of your home. If you have questions, your local flooring specialist can help you determine which products best suits your particular needs.

Help CASA during the Holidays: Gift Drive ending! The annual Toy & Gift Drive for CASA ends December 6th. Court

Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), with your help, provides holi-day gifts for the abused and neglected children they assist as they are transitioning to become wards of the State. Remember what these kids need the most is you – as volunteer advocates to serve the children. The advocate is not a foster parent but accompanies him or her to court so the child knows someone is on his or her side, and perhaps meet other people in the child’s life, etc. to help the court with evalu-ations. CASA ensures the volunteer is thoroughly screened, profes-sionally trained and supervised. Call CASA to schedule a presentation for your organization or church at one of your monthly meetings. Most of you already know that the women in business are busy with their annual fundraiser for the formal, plated but traditional Christmas meal they home-cook for the 80 girls housed at the New Life Treatment Center. Donations are also collected for the gifts Santa gives each girl at the dinner, valued at about $50 for each. To donate cook time or money, call Bridget McDougall at 830-964-3127.

The New Life Center that now has ten cottages is also asking individuals, churches and/or organizations to “adopt a cottage” for the holidays to help with Christmas. Board member. Amy Almond-Laechelin, writes, “New Life is specifically in need of churches or groups to adopt a cottage and provide ten of one item such as puzzles, games, baby dolls, bath gels, or clothing for an estimated commitment of $250 per cottage. For information, call New Life at 830-964-4390.

Hope Hospice is offering a drop-in support group targeted to those who are grieving during the holidays. There will be a different program every Thursday from 11am-12:30pm through January 12 with no registration necessary. After decades of providing bereavement support, the organization recognizes that the holidays can be especially difficult – for some the first holiday with their loved one absent and for others not until years later. The program offers participants a variety of coping techniques. Participants should arrive at Hope Hospice’s 611 N Walnut Avenue office in New Braunfels ten minutes early and may call Julie at 830-358-5300 with any questions.
