Principals Message:
Dear Canyon View Families,
The slight chill in the air each morning indicates that the fall season is upon us. For the students, staff, and fami-lies at Canyon View this signifies the beginning of many of our academic club and intervention offerings. This pastMonday, our Geography Bee Club held its first meeting of the year for 4-5th graders during their lunchtime. Stu-dents in the Geo Bee will spend the next few months learning about countless places of interest from aroundthe world. The culminating event will be the official Geo Bee held in our Canyon View library in December.
This week also marked the beginning of Khan Academy, and the 4th and 5th grade teachers who are overseeingthis project are ecstatic with the record turnout! Khan Academy is an interactive website where students canmake use of an extensive library of content, including interactive challenges, assessments, and videos. Each week(Tuesday-Thursday), students from various grade levels will be attending before and after school sessions to
sharpen their math skills. If you would like to learn more about this program and see if its a good fit for yourchild, please email Mr. Suter ([email protected]).
Our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) Club will have its first meeting of the year onThursday, September 19. The goal of the STEAM Club is to give students a fun, hands-on learning experiencewhere they can explore various science-related topics in a collaborative environment. Students in grades 1-3 willmeet in the library for the lunch hour while students in grades 4-5 will meet after school in the MPR. Students ingrades 1-3 are welcome to join this later session. The later session is taught with the 4th and 5th graders inmind, but points will be reiterated giving younger students additional exposure to the materials presented.2013STEAM Club dates: 10/24, 11/14, 12/12. Additional information (including registration) can be found on theCanyon View FFO website: HYPERLINK "https://sites.google.com/site/canyonviewffo/"https://sites.google.com/site/canyonviewffo/
Next, the Spelling Bee Club is set to kick off during the first week in October. Besides working on their spellingskills, 1-5 grade students will be focusing on Latin and Greek word studies. Additional information will be sentout in the coming days.
Finally, Imagine Learningwill once again be taking place at Canyon View before and after school. Imagine Learningis a language and reading software that includes instruction in the five essential reading components: phonemicawareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. It also has the ability to differentiate students' in-struction by conducting an initial placement test to delineate a starting point for each student, regulate and se-quence student instruction based on student responses, and provide informative feedback tailored to studentresponses. Finally, language support is provided for students who need it and the support is gradually withdrawnas students progress toward language proficiency. Imagine Learninginvitations will be sent out to specific stu-
dents next week. If your child receives an invitation and you would like additional information regarding the pro-gram, please do not hesitate to contact the front office at 209-7700.
Have a wonderful weekend,
