SUMMER....11

By Holly Thorpe

For Lake Chelan This Week

Let’s face it, maybe that vacation in Hawaii isn’t

happening anytime soon — especially with the

holidays coming up. But what if we told you that you

could get away to your own tropical paradise this

weekend? And, how about a bit of detective work

while you’re at it?

If it sounds like your perfect getaway, hit up Legend

Cellars this weekend, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m., for their

“Murder in Maui: A Luau to Die For” dinner. Yes, it’s

just as shrouded in mystery as it sounds.

The evening begins like any other themed dinner until

disaster strikes. Someone has been murdered — and

worse yet, the killer is still in the room. It’s up to the

guests — that means you! — to catch them before

they escape.

But hey, to be fair that’s kind of

normal at Legend Cellars. This event

is one of many they’ve done with

themes ranging from Mardi Gras

Masquerade to Murder in the Snow on

New Year’s.

Guests are given scripts to read from

throughout the night, with the evening

split into two parts and dinner served

in the middle. The winery pairs a

selection of their wines with dinner.

Their event last month, featuring a

pirate-themed murder mystery, was a

success.

“[It was received] very well,” said

Makenzie Kramer, a Legend Cellars

employee. “We had it outside on the

patio and everyone dressed up. It was

a lot of fun, and a lot of ‘arrrgh’s!’ ”

She said she’s seen guests return

after their first murder mystery.

“They have a blast,” she said. “And

they get to meet new people.”

Don’t worry, the murderer will be

revealed at the end. Of course, it

might be you.

“It could be any guest,” Kramer said.

Seating is limited to 30, so if you

miss your chance this time, you can

catch the next one in November.

This week’s pick:

About the winery: Owners Lynn and Henry Munneke own one of a

small handful of true “estate” wineries in the Chelan area. Estate win-

eries are unique in that they control each step of the winemaking pro-

cess: the Munneke’s grow all of their own grapes on-site, make their

wine, bottle it at the winery and sell it in their tasting room. Addition-

ally, they use only Chelan grapes — one of the perks of owning vine-

yards, which make for a picturesque place to stroll and enjoy your wine.

The vineyards were established in 2000, followed by the opening of

the winery in 2003 and the tasting room in 2010. The facility produces

900-950 cases per year.

They recommend: “Absolutely our estate barrel-fermented Chardon-

nay. That is our signature wine,” Lynn said. She describes the Chardon-

nay as their “specialty,” noting it’s unique fermentation process. “A lot

of people are doing Chardonnay in stainless steel,” she said. And, if

you’re up for something a little different, they have an obscure treat:

white merlot. Lynn describes it as “rare” and “odd,” adding that many

people can’t fi nd it elsewhere.

Why go?: The winery itself is worth the trip, but the wine might keep

you around. In the summers, a large patio serves as an excellent spot

to check out the “unbelievable” view over lunch and when the air

turns cold, head inside to enjoy the warmth of a big stone fi replace.

As of right now, the winery only hosts a few private events but they’re

licensed for live music and look forward to hosting weddings. Plus, they

have the neat honor of being a “gravity-style” winery, meaning they

don’t pump the wines from place to place, but use the three stories of

their winery to transfer it. “We like to be gentle,” Lynn said.
