Why you should consider a LIQUID multivitamin supplement. Many experts now believe that consuming vitamin supplements in liquid form is substantially more benefi cial than relying on solid pills-a belief that is supported by research studies: “liquid supplements contain the nutrients in a more highly bioavailable form, are gentler to the stomach, and sometimes are more suitable than solid supplements, especially for children and elderly patients.”The liquid advantageA liquid multivitamin supplement offers a number of benefi ts over solid forms for people of all ages, but especially for older adults or those with known digestive issues. Among the benefi ts are the following:• Liquids are quickly and readily absorbed, as they do not fi rst need to be broken down.
• Liquids contain no fi llers, binders or coatings that may interfere with proper dissolution.
• Liquids are fully dissolved upon ingestion, and allow for absorption of key nutrients along the entire gastrointestinal tract.
• Liquids are a welcome alternative for people who have trouble swallowing solid pills, particularly children, the elderly and those who are ill or convalescing.
• Due to enhanced absorption of nutrients, liquids may allow for lower general dosing than with solid pills.

David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Koo-tenay-Columbia, on be-half of the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Devel-opment, announced to-day the opening of the ?aq’amnik Education Centre. This invest-ment has been assisted
in part by measures un-der Economic Action Plan 2012.
“The Harper Govern-ment is taking concrete steps to improve on-reserve learning envi-ronments and, in turn, improve educational outcomes for First Na-tion students,” said Minister Duncan. “A good education is key to positioning First
Nation students to get jobs and achieve the success and prosperity they seek and Canada needs.”
“Our Government is proud to have partnered with the St. Mary’s Band to help the next generation of First Na-tion students achieve their educational goals,” said Mr. Wilks. “We believe that good education and a grow-ing economy go hand in hand and investing in schools on reserve will lead to healthier, more self-suf cient communities.”
“?aq’amnik Elemen-tary has been offering quality educational programming to the community for over 25 years. This new facility
will provide additional opportunities to expand our educational pro-gramming and services to better meet the needs of our community and to meet the goals and objectives set out in our long term strategic plan,” said St. Mary’s Band Chief Cheryl Casimer.
The new elementary school will accommo-date approximately 50 students from kinder-garten to Grade 7 in a two-story building that includes several class-rooms, of ce space, a meeting room, and a cafeteria. The new fa-cility will better meet the needs of St. Mary’s Band students and en-hance their educational experience by provid-
ing a modern and func-tional learning environ-ment.
The Harper Govern-ment invested over $1.8 million in the?aq’amnik Education Centre. The St. Mary’s Band con-tributed an additional $500,000 towards the $2.3 million facility. This project is part of the $175 million for new schools and major renovations included in the Government’s Economic Action Plan 2012 commitments to First Nation education.
These measures build on the more than $1 bil-lion a year the Harper Government spends on First Nation education and will contribute to creating the conditions required for Canada’s First Nations to par-ticipate more fully in Canada’s economy.
The St. Mary’s Band is located east of Cran-brook, B.C., near the Rocky Mountains. The community has a total population of 365 peo-ple, of whom 191 live on reserve.

A dif cult decision by East Kootenay Foun-dation for Health and Kootenay Savings to cancel the 5th Annual Celebrating Health Care Golf Tournament has now turned into an exciting opportunity.
The charity golf tour-nament was to sup-port the ‘A Clear View ~ digital stereotactic mammography cam-paign’ for the East Koo-tenay Regional Hos-pital. Although golf is no longer an option, Kootenay Savings will continue to support the fundraising effort by moving their nancial support ($15,000) to the return of the ‘Clear-ly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’, organized by In-vermere’s Sheila Tutty - one of the Faces of the A Clear View cam-paign.
Held in March of this year, the original ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’ raised just over $17,000 for the campaign spear-headed by East Koo-
tenay Foundation for Health. Kootenay Savings support for a fall celebration event and continued support of healthcare takes on extra special meaning this year, as a number of Kootenay Savings employees have fought, or are currently ght-ing, breast cancer.
“Seeing the commit-ment the East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the health care aux-iliaries have to improv-ing regional healthcare, as well as the integral role our passionate em-ployees and directors in the East Kootenays played in fundraising for the Invermere Hos-pital, it was a natural t for us to lend our sup-port to the Clear View campaign and the up-coming celebration”, shared Kootenay Sav-ings President & CEO, Brent Tremblay.
Support from many sponsors who origi-nally contributed to the golf tournament has been tremendous for both the Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash
and the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign.
The Saturday, Octo-ber 27 event will once again take place at the wonderful Black Forest Restaurant and feature models, all of whom are breast cancer sur-vivors, showcasing fashions from some of Invermere’s nest retailers. The Win-dermere Health Care Auxiliary will also be on hand offering a 50/50 draw with pro-ceeds going to the In-vermere Hospital Pal-liative Care Unit.
There will be door prizes, laughter, some speeches and the chance to join Koote-nay Savings and other supporters in celebrat-ing health care and the drive to bring the best in breast cancer imag-ing to the region.
Doors open at 5:30 pm, 3-course dinner at 6:30 pm and the fash-ion show at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be ready in early September and available at the In-vermere and Radium
branches of Kootenay Savings.
Kootenay Savings, over the past four years of the Celebrating Health Care Golf Tour-nament, has helped raise over $88,000 to-wards the Invermere District Hospital emer-gency and pediatric departments! Now, working together with the ‘Clearly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’, they continue to take a re-gional approach to help bring leading-edge technology in breast cancer care to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
For more informa-tion about the ‘Clear-ly… a Breast Friends’ Bash’contact Sheila Tutty, event coordinator at 250- 342-9059; email [email protected] or call Donna Grainger, East Kootenay Founda-tion for Health toll-free at 1-877-489-6481.

The Cranbrook Chap-ter of the Canadian Federation of Univer-sity Women (CFUW) is proud to be celebrating its 30th anniversary on September 20th, with a special event. It will begin at 7 pm at the Manual Training School attached to the Cran-brook Public Library. Refreshments will be served and the event is open to the public. Guest speaker Ghada Alatrash (Janbey) will speak on “Think of Oth-ers”: Building Bridges between East and West.
Like many clubs, the CFUW is a non-pro t organization. There are approximately 125 clubs across Canada work-ing towards the goals of stimulating interest in cultural, social and political elds, devel-oping sound concepts of educational value, awarding scholarships and bursaries, establish-ing good relationships with other organiza-tions and using our own education for the ben-e t of the community in which we serve. CFUW is af liated with the In-ternational Federation of University Women (IFUW), a global orga-nization advocating for women’s rights, equal-ity and empowerment through access to qual-ity education and train-ing up to the highest levels.
In 1984 CFUW Cran-brook started an annual
recognition program called Woman Of The Year. Recipients of this award are very much admired and respected in the community and are often “unsung hero-ines”.
Any woman in the East Kootenay region is eligible to receive the award based on the following criteria: her contributions to the education and/or ad-vancement of women, and how she has in-spired and enriched the lives around her by her endeavors. The recipi-ents’ contributions and achievements may have taken place in the last year or over a period of
time. Her efforts may have been part of paid employment, voluntary, or a combination of both. “Education” does not necessarily carry an academic meaning, but can be more widely interpreted to mean sup-porting and encouraging learning.
CFUW Cranbrook has a wonderful scrapbook which has pictures and news articles about each recipient. Each page is artfully decorated in the new scrapbook methods of the day. It will be on display at our 30th an-niversary celebration, with many recipients in attendance.

The meaning behind some parts of our his-tory tends to fade from our collective memory over time. This is cer-tainly the case for Labour Day, a holi-day that has taken on a whole new signi cance through the years. One thing remains the same, however: Canadians continue to welcome this long weekend with open arms!
Nowadays, Labour Day signals the end of summer activities and the beginning of a new school year, and it is a time to relax before our busy fall schedules take precedence. Even though there is still a feeling of summer in the air, we become more aware that the days are getting shorter and we notice that the harvest season is around the cor-ner, bringing fall scents like hay and wet fallen leaves.
Labour Day is a time of change in many differ-ent ways, and it provides
a wonderful opportunity to roam the countryside, stocking up on freshly-picked vegetables or bit-ing into crispy apples. It is a favourite time of year for outdoor enthu-siasts of all kinds, with some people taking advantage of this three-day weekend to travel even further afield,
exploring new areas of the country.
Yet there is a great deal of meaning behind this special event, which we all celebrate on the rst Monday of September. It should also be a time to remember the ori-gins of Labour Day, to remember that, without the efforts and sacri ces of the labour movement
to improve working con-ditions during the 1880s and ‘90s, this holiday would not exist. That vast mobilization of the labour force, born in big cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, grew to encompass the entire Canadian work-ing class and became the holiday that we know today.
One last summer fl ing before schoolSubmitted
Labour Day has been celebrated on the rst Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union’s strike for a 58-hour work-week.
The Toronto Trades Assembly (TTA) called its 27 unions to demon-strate in support of the Typographical Union who had been on strike since March 25. George Brown, Canadian poli-tician and editor of the Toronto Globe hit back at his striking employ-ees, pressing police to charge the Typographi-cal Union with “con-spiracy.”
Although the laws criminalising union ac-tivity were outdated and had already been abol-ished in Great Britain, they were still on the books in Canada and police arrested 24 lead-ers of the Typographi-cal Union. Labour leaders decided to call another similar demon-
stration on September 3 to protest the arrests. Seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald to repeal the “barbarous” anti-union laws. Parliament passed the Trade Union Act on June 14 the fol-lowing year, and soon all unions were seeking a 54-hour work-week.
The Toronto Trades and Labour Coun-cil (successor to the TTA) held similar cel-ebrations every spring. American Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Fed-eration of Labor, was asked to speak at a la-bour festival in Toron-to, Canada on July 22, 1882. Returning to the United States, McGuire and the Knights of La-bor organised a simi-lar parade based on the Canadian event on September 5, 1882 in New York City, USA. On July 23, 1894, Ca-nadian Prime Minister John Thompson and his government made La-bour Day, to be held in September, an of cial holiday. In the United States, the New York
parade became an an-nual event that year, and in 1894 was adopt-ed by American presi-dent Grover Cleveland to compete with Inter-national Workers’ Day (May Day).
While Labour Day parades and picnics are organised by unions, many Canadians re-gard Labour Day as the Monday of the last long weekend of summer. Non-union celebrations include picnics, re-works displays, water activities, and public art events. Since the new school year gen-erally starts right after Labour Day, families with school-age chil-dren take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer.
An old fashioned tra-dition in Canada and the United States bans the wearing of white after Labour Day. Ex-planations for this tra-dition vary; the most common is that white is a summer colour and Labour Day unof -cially marks the end of summer. The rule may have been intended as a status symbol for new members of the upper and middle classes in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Liz Desrosiers has been drawn to volun-teer for causes close to her heart and close to the people she cares about. It is for her long-standing commitment to organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, along with local schools and sports teams in her community of Cranbrook that Liz has been recognized as Investors Group’s sec-ond quarter Employee Volunteer Award recip-ient for 2012.
Desrosiers has been the region coordina-tor for the Kootenay region for the past 12 years, but her passion for volunteerism ig-nited at her previous job, when three people in her workplace were battling cancer at the same time. She orga-nized a couple of teams from work to run in the Canadian Cancer So-ciety’s Relay for Life back in 1998. This simple gesture led to greater involvement
with the relay, joining the organizing com-mittee the following year and serving as the team volunteer chair for three years in ad-dition to organizing an Investors Group team after she began with the Kootenay of ce.
In 2000, when her children started el-ementary school, she felt it was important to be involved in their school and volunteered with the Highlands School Parent Advisory Committee by organiz-ing family night pasta dinners and carnivals and handing out hot dogs on hot lunch days. When they started to play organized sports, she chaired local hock-ey tournaments, man-aged their hockey and cheerleading teams and volunteered at lacrosse tournaments.
“I think it is impor-tant to give back to or-ganizations like minor hockey and lacrosse or school sports like cheerleading or volley-ball because they need help,” said Desrosiers. “Without volunteers,
the kids wouldn’t have opportunities to play and be safe.”
When Desrosiers’ son Cole was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabe-tes (T1D) in 2003, she made it a personal commitment to support the work of the Juve-nile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
“I decided early that I would do everything in my power to help my son live the best life he could with T1D,” said Desrosiers. “I orga-nized a support group for families living with the disease in 2004 and at that time found the JDRF organization on-line.”
Desrosiers also be-came active in raising funds, rst participat-ing and encouraging others to take part in the foundation’s yearly walks which were held in another community about an hour away. In 2009, the East Koote-nay Walk to Cure Dia-betes was held in Cran-brook, and she became the walk coordinator. This developed into an annual regional event
for the Kootenay of ce, with a lot of support coming from members of the Kootenay team. As a result funds raised from the walks went from approximately $5,000 a year in 2005 to $29,000 in 2010 and $22,000 in 2011.
“My work with the JDRF is important to me because I want to be able to look my son in the eyes every single day and know that I have done every-thing possible to help him live the best life he can with diabetes,” said Desrosiers. “But another reason is, it has been a wonderful way to show our East Kootenay communities what a giving and car-ing company Investors Group is.”
Looking back on the years she has devoted to so many worthy causes, Desrosiers re- ects: “I couldn’t begin
to count the number of hours I have spent with these organizations but I wouldn’t trade one minute. It has been ex-tremely ful lling and I love doing it. I also feel it is important to model volunteering for my kids and they are al-ways helping out at the walk or volunteering at school.
I would like to thank Diane Babcock, my partner in the region of- ce and Lois Kerr, my
leader for nominating me,” she concludes. “I truly feel very fortunate to work with a compa-ny where volunteerism and community spirit are supported and so very important. I would not have been able to help out with these or-ganizations if I wasn’t working in such a sup-portive atmosphere.”
In recognition of her award, a $1,000 dona-tion has been made to Desrosiers’ charity of choice, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also received a plaque and gift card to commemo-rate the occasion.

Whether it’s for a baby or a big kid, choosing a theme for a child’s bedroom is not always easy. Some popular themes, such as trendy film characters, are short-lived while others become classics.
For a little girl’s bedroom you can’t go wrong with ow-ers, fairies, princess-es, birds, butter ies, hearts, and romantic roses, while classic boy themes include sports, cars, planes, outer space, knights, pirates, robots, and camou age. Neutral themes are also a pos-sibility, such as Mother Nature, animals, espe-cially cats and dogs, or a jungle with big, funny elephants and majestic giraffes.
The age of the child should always be taken into consideration when choosing a theme. For example, gentle, classic bear and rabbit themes with light colours are
popular with very young girls and boys, but they won’t likely suit the tastes of older chil-dren. A newborn’s bed-room can be decorated with celestial themes: stars, birds, angels and clouds, which are airy and soothing for babies and tired parents. For older children, geo-graphical themes based on a particular country or continent, such as Mexico or Asia, or topi-cal themes, such as the environment or ecol-ogy, are also interesting options.
Whichever theme you choose, make sure that it can be easily changed. For example, you might display the theme only in fabrics and decorative acces-sories. Opt for white or natural wood furni-ture and choose a fairly neutral colour scheme for painting the walls; wallpaper will be more difficult to replace when your child’s tastes evolve. No mat-ter the style and theme, try to avoid cluttering the room and mixing styles.
If your kitchen is looking a little shab-by, maybe it’s time to freshen it up. The sim-plest way to do that is to give the walls a good paint job. Replacing the handles and knobs of cupboards and drawers will also rejuvenate your kitchen in a blink of the eye. These ornaments come in a huge variety of models and colours, so it is more than easy to nd ones that will harmonize with any type of kitchen.
Replacing the tap or sink will also amp up a kitchen’s look. Elaborate, retro, or mod-ern designs, gleaming colours, and beautiful nishes are all on offer
in many different mod-els that are resistant to wear and easy to main-tain.
If the look of cup-boards and drawers needs to be freshened up, you can paint them, add moldings, reface
them, replace the doors and the front of draw-ers, or even change them completely in order to create a more modern look.
If your appliances need to be replaced, opt for good quality models that are easy to clean. A huge range of kitchen appliances is now avail-able. To be sure that your new appliances will blend with any type of décor, select ones that are white, stainless steel, or black.
A modular kitchen with many storage facilities is
both practical and func-tional. Another idea, if you have enough room, is to add an island that will combine more work
space and storage with a casual eating area where family and friends can gather.

College of the Rockies’ Kimberley Campus is hosting a one-stop regis-tration event for families. On September 4, 6 and 10 from 6 p.m. to 8:30
p.m., community mem-bers will have the oppor-tunity to sign-up for all of their fall activities and events at one location.
Sponsored by Colum-
bia Basin Trust, this event provides local families with the ability to register themselves or their children for activi-ties, clubs or educational opportunities for the fall, all at the same time at the Kimberley Campus.
College of the Rockies Program Assistant Josh Lockhart says, “There has been a lot of enthusi-asm for the event so far. We have many business-es and groups signed up and are seeing new ones coming on board every day.”
“Not only is this a great opportunity for business-es and groups to interact with the public but it also
gives them the chance to build relationships and partnerships with other organizations in the com-munity,” Lockhart con-tinued.
For more information on the Kimberley Com-munity Fall Registration Days, contact the Kim-berley Campus at (250) 427-7116 ext. 3752 or email:[email protected].

"We often think of bygone days when we were all together. The family chain is broken now but
memories live forever. To us he has not gone away nor has he travelled far. Just entered God's
eternal home and left the gate ajar. A light from our family is gone a voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in our lives
which never can be lled. Your memory is our keepsake from which we will never part. God
has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts.
Silently the angles took daddy into the mansion above. There shall he rest from earth's til safe in
the arms of God's love."

Overall: With a facelifted Taurus coming next year, other than a new paint hue, the company is leaving well enough alone for 2012.Drivetrain: Ubiquitous
would describe the widely used 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 engine that drives the front wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmis-sion; the “raging bull” SHO adds twin turbochargers and other performance upgrades to the V6, causing 365 horses to enervate all four wheels.
It’s amazing what a little sexy sheetmetal and some modern technology can do to a car. The Ford Taurus that rolled out in 2010 is based on the boring, forgettable, rent-al- eet fodder that occupied most of the last the decade in Five Hundred then Taurus form. The 2012 Taurus gets motivation from the familiar 263-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 found in a host of Ford prod-
ucts. Base models get the standard six-speed automatic transmission with a system that prevents the car from rolling backward on an in-cline. Mid-level and upscale editions are upgraded with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles and a rev-matching program for smoother down-shifts while all-wheel-drive is as an option on the latter. However, all-wheel-drive is a standard part of the full-blooded SHO package. This raging bull is tted with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 that generates 365 horse-power and 350 pound-feet of torque. The basic chassis architecture gets signi cant stiffening and retuning to improve driving precision and ride comfort. Other high-lights include a unique grille, rear-deck spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, 19- or optional 20-inch wheels, leather-coat-ed interior, 10-way adjustable
front seat and push-button start. Interior highlights in-clude a Mustang-inspired dashboard and control-panel layout that smoothly ows into a sizable oor console. The extensive list of avail-able add-ons includes an ex-terior keyless-entry keypad and adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe distance from vehicles traveling in front. Also available is blind-spot warning, an alert system that indicates when other ve-hicles are approaching from the sides while you’re back-ing up, and multi-contour massaging front seats. As a parental-control program, Ford’s MyKey mutes the audio system until the seat belts are buckled (and re-stricts audio volume thereaf-ter), keeps the traction- and stability-control functions engaged and limits top speed to 80 mph.
Overall: Need a big eight-passenger tall wagon with good looks and loads of space? Traverse might be your new best friend.Drivetrain: The carryover
3.6-litre V6 puts out 281 horsepower to a six-speed au-tomatic transmission; opt for dual exhaust to get a bit more horsepower and torque.
With the related Saturn Outlook gone for good, Chevrolet now represents General Motors’ least-expen-sive version of this full-size tall wagon platform. Still, it has most of the function of the pricier GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave and is just as fuel-ef cient . . . which is quite a bit more fuel-ef cient than GM’s traditional body-on-frame V8 models such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The Traverse is almost the same size and can
transport nearly as many pas-sengers. The bold split grille seen on nearly all Chevy cars and trucks is brack-eted by a pair of neatly in-tegrated headlight pods plus a set of fog lamps that look as though they were lifted from the Malibu sedan. The interior displays a passenger-car-like quality, with large, legible gauges and controls that are housed in an attrac-tive dashboard that won’t require extensive study of the owner’s manual to deci-pher. Traverse’s passenger and cargo roominess trumps that of the Tahoe, whether all three rows of seats are folded at or left upright. Traverse
has a 3.6-litre V6 that pro-duces 281 horsepower, or 288 ponies with the optional dual exhaust. The engine op-erates through a six-speed automatic transmission, and
the optional all-wheel-drive system seamlessly distrib-utes power to either the front or rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. Stability control, a system that reduces the like-lihood of a skid or spin, is standard equipment as is traction control. On the long list of available content, of which some will be standard on higher models, are 18 or 20-inch wheels (17-inch al-loys are standard), perforat-ed leather seats, heated and cooled front buckets, power liftgate, rear-view camera, power-folding outside mir-rors, premium audio system and individual sunroofs for the rst two rows.
Muscle under the hood but still a car for the family
Roomy, powerful and built to take you and your family anywhere

Twin turbochargers and performance upgrades mean that the 2012 Taurus maintains its position as one of the most stylish and muscular family cars on the market.

With its passenger car feel, the spacious 2012 Traverse has room for you, your family and friends while still maintaining fuel ef ciency for the long haul.
