Whether you want to or you have to, fall is usually the time to close down the cottage for the winter. Holiday weekends are spent in town, and a busy fall family schedule means you won’t have much time to escape to the country any more. Here

is a list to help you remember all the things that need to be done before hanging up the cottage key for the win-ter.

First of all, take the time to clean and store all the outdoor furniture, lawnmower, bikes, and any gardening equip-

ment. If you own some kind of watercraft, nd out from the manufac-turer if they need any special type of main-tenance before they are put into winter storage.

Lots of jobs have to be done inside the cot-tage as well. Empty the fridge and if your cot-tage is in the woods, ensure that you don’t leave any traces of food for mice to be drawn to. Unplug the fridge and clean it thoroughly, leaving the door ajar. Remove and wash the bedding and then store it in a dry place, such as in plastic storage bins.

Lower the heating enough to maintain a

minimum temperature of at least 5°C to pre-vent pipes from freez-ing. If you live in an area with severe win-ters, pour about half a litre of plumbing anti-freeze down the drain pipes. Turn off the cot-tage’s water supply and then the electricity to the water heater. This should then be emptied using a hosepipe connected to the purge control valve. Empty all the other water pipes by opening the taps fully. After that, all you’ll have to do is purge the water pump.

Unless you have a nat-ural gas barbecue that is connected directly to your home’s fuel sup-ply, the chilly days of late fall signal the end of outdoor cooking. It is also the time to winter-ize your barbecue prop-erly in order to prolong its life and look.

Of all the different components, the grill is the one that deserves the most attention. Removing all traces of food is essential, espe-cially after you have nished cooking the last

meal. This is above all

a question of hygiene. Use some steel wool or a metal brush with soapy water for cast iron grills. More expen-sive barbecues are often equipped with stain-less steel grills which should be cleaned with a cloth, mild soap, and hot water. If you don’t want to go to a lot of trouble, do a self-clean by turning the burners on high and letting all food residues burn off.

The next item to clean is the rubber pipe that connects the valve of the propane tank to the

burners. Brushes that have been designed for this job are available at specialized retailers. On the outside of the barbecue, use linseed oil to get rid of any rust on the cover. When all rust is removed, it can be repainted with a heat resistant paint. This retouching not only improves the look of your barbecue, it will also prevent rust from reappearing over the winter while the barbe-cue is in storage.

Because a replace is the centrepiece of any room, decorative objects to be displayed around it must be chosen very carefully.

Whether the mantel and surround of your replace are wide or nar-

row, decorative or not, there is one main prin-ciple to respect when highlighting this invit-ing feature: your per-sonality. Start with your favourite work of art, placing it in the centre

of the mantel to create a focal point. This could be a statue, a candela-brum, an antique bowl, or a ower arrange-ment. Then group simi-lar objects here and there around this central piece, extending out to the ends of the mantel. “Similar” objects means choosing ones of the same style and colour. So surround your favou-rite object with vases in similar colours or pho-tograph frames in the

same style in order to create a balanced effect.

With balance still in mind, mix small objects with larger ones and resist the temptation to overcrowd. The individ-ual interest of each item would disappear and the result would look disor-ganized.

If you really don’t like the look of your re-place, it is possible to improve its appearance. For example, you could paint the mantel and surround it with imita-tion marble or dress it up with little mirrors in such a way as to give the room more sparkle and light. You could also look for an antique man-telpiece and just install the lintel, on which you could attach a glass shelf for a perfect blend of styles and eras.

B.C. Government workers across the prov-ince will go on strike on Wednesday September 5, the B.C. Government and Service Employ-ees’ Union (BCGEU), Professional Employ-ees Association (PEA) and Canadian Of ce & Professional Employees Union (COPE) Local

378 announced today.On September 5, ap-

proximately 27,000 BC-GEU, PEA and COPE 378 members who work for the B.C. government will go on strike in 153 communities and 1785 government worksites across B.C. The strike will last all day.

“We are looking for

a fair and reasonable agreement, but the gov-ernment is not listening. We have no choice but to send a clear message on September 5: there can be no more falling be-hind for all government workers.” said BCGEU President Darryl Walker. “We’ve not taken the de-cision to strike lightly. Our last strike in direct government was over 20 years ago.”

Since 2010, B.C. gov-ernment workers have suffered a real wage

cut of ve percent. The government’s last offer, which has been with-drawn, would see pay cheques fall further be-

hind in ation.“We’ve exhausted our

other options with ICBC and the provincial gov-ernment,” said COPE

378 President David Black. “Our members have spent over two years without a collec-tive agreement doing

more work for less pay.”Essential service levels

are guaranteed for the health, safety and wel-fare of citizens.

Over the last few days, the mornings have been getting noticeably cool-er. There is a crispness in the air and fall certainly is around the corner. The crispness in the air might signal the beginning of the end and is time to say ‘Good Bye’ to hot sum-mer nights and ip- ops, however, now yards and gardens also yield their bounty and fall fairs give gardeners and artisans a chance to display their wares.

The Kootenay Country Fair has been celebrat-ing harvest and crafting skills for 35 years. It is held at Fort Steele Heri-tage Town this Sunday, September 9, from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There will be something for every-one to see, from garden produce and scarecrows, home baking and pre-serves, to needlework and photography.

The historic setting at Fort Steele adds to the old-time appeal of this fair and with regular gate admission waived on fair day, this is an affordable day of fun, food and en-tertainment for the entire family. Prices are $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for se-niors and children age 6 to 13. Families pay $13.50 and children un-der 6 are free.

Admission includes access to the entire heri-tage site and there will be lots of activities the entire day, from demon-strations and a petting zoo to face painting and games entertainers and caricatures. “We want to have a community fam-ily day,” explains Trudy Larsen a longtime volun-teer with the fair.

Families will not have to go hungry either.

There will be a pancake breakfast and barbecue lunch at the International Hotel and snacks are available from various concessions all day long. In fact, one of Larsen’s favourite memories of the fair has to do with food.

A few years ago, she and a fellow volunteer were taking a quick break. Sitting by the gazebo, watching the crowds, they encoun-tered a scene that made them realize what the fair was all about. “What we saw was a family, sit-ting on a blanket on the grass, having a picnic lunch and having a fun day.”

But of course, the fair is also about exhibiting the products of people’s hard work in the garden or the kitchen, with a needle or using a cam-era, paint brush and lots of creativity. “It’s always nice for kids and adults as well to show their tal-ent,” Larsen says.

There are dozens of categories people can enter, from the most un-usual vegetable to best decorated giant cookie, best antipasto, most im-pressive scrapbook, most stunning photograph and everything in between.

Over the years, one of the most popular catego-ries, Larsen states, has been ‘Reduce, Reuse & Recycle’ where adults and children create new products – either useful or artistic – from recy-cled material. “It’s quite amazing what they think of and use garbage for,” she says.

Entry forms for the fair can still be dropped off before 5pm on Tues-day, September 4, at Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet and Cranbrook Pho-

to in Cranbrook as well as Top Crop Too in Kim-berley. Late entries may be displayed, but will not be judged.

All exhibits will have to be dropped off for judging at the Fort Steele opera house on Saturday, September 8, between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. There is a 50¢ charge per item. Items will then be dis-played for the public all day Sunday, Whatever is not picked up by 4:30 pm that day is going up for auction and Larsen encourages visitors to stay and take part in this fun nale to the fair.

All the organizers of the Kootenay Country Fair are volunteers, so any money raised goes right back into paying for entertainment and other expenses. “We also give a bursary of $1,000 to a graduating student from Cranbrook each year and one to a Kimberley stu-dent,” Larsen adds. Hol-ly Sperling from Mount Baker Secondary and Amy Cornelson from Selkirk Secondary were the most recent recipi-ents of the bursary. Both students are pursuing careers in food studies, agriculture, horticulture or the arts.

Larsen knows that all this would not be pos-sible without the help of community sponsors who support the fair by advertising in the book-let and sponsoring the individual categories. She also thanks the many people who participate in the juried exhibition, a large number of them returning year after year to show their skills.

If the swarm of young soccer enthusiasts at Lakeside pitch on Tues-day night is any indica-tion, the new Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy program is going to be a hit in the West Koote-nay.

“I’m really pleased to see so many players out,” said David Broad-hurst, the Whitecaps FC Okanagan head coach. “I wasn’t expecting to see close to a 100 play-ers, it’s fantastic. It’s great to see that there is interest here in the Koo-tenays for what we are trying to offer.”

The academy’s aim is to give players that are already with clubs in the East and West Kootenay supplemental training with the best coaching the province has to offer. The acad-emy will include four age groups for both girls and boys: U11/12, U13/14, U15/16 and U17/18.

The Nelson evaluation session earlier this week included players from Nelson, Trail, Castlegar, Grand Forks and every-where in between.

Three years ago the Whitecaps moved their rst academy program

outside the Lower Mainland to Vernon. Broadhurst runs the program there and has already seen plenty of success. The move into

the Kootenay is the rst push farther into BC’s hinterland.

“I think Dave [Spend-love] and [Nelson’s] Soccer Quest have done a great job in this community,” Broad-hurst told the Star when asked about why there was such a positive turnout for the rst ses-sions. “Their reputation is good and the small pieces of work we have done with them in pre-vious years, the mes-

sage is getting out that we are going to be here for the long run.”

The program runs for seven months start-ing in September and ending in April (there is a two month winter break in December and January). The training includes eight week-ends at Nelson’s Soccer Quest indoor facility. Four travel events per age group will also be part of the academy.

Based on the evalu-ations on Tuesday and Wednesday night at Lakeside, those players accepted into the pro-gram will be noti ed and begin their training next month.

“As a club we are completely committed to player development, it’s crucial for us to sur-vive,” Broadhurst said of the motivation for the Whitecaps to extend their reach. “As a club, the dream is to have homegrown talent, even on our rst team… that is what the fans want and the owners would love to see it. The more work we can do in the smaller districts, work-ing with the coaches and the players, it will

bene t our program in the long run.”

Broadhurst grew up in England where foot-ball is king. He spent 12 years coaching with the Manchester United

Soccer Schools at inter-national projects in the UK, Japan and Switzer-land. Though soccer in Canada still has a long way to go to catch up to worldwide leaders like

England, Broadhurst said the Whitecaps are up to the challenge.

“There are a lots of great athletes here and lots of players that love the game,” he said. “It’s

only a matter of time before those technical skills will catch up. The players have to put the work in and what we are trying to here gives them that ability.”

The start of a new

school year is the per-fect occasion to give your children a short

lesson that will be a good investment in the local economy. Make the most of the back to school shopping blitz to raise your children’s awareness of the many bene ts of shopping locally.

There’s only one con-dition for turning this intensive training into a resounding success: you just have to buy all school supplies and clothing items from businesses near you.

When shopping with your children at local stores for stationery,

books, school bags, clothes, shoes, sport-ing equipment, and electronics, mention to your kids that when local people frequent these stores they are helping to create jobs and incomes for others in their town.

Bring to your chil-dren’s attention the fact that if these businesses remain pro table, one day they might be the source of a summer job or even, at a later date, a full-time job that will allow them to stay in the town they grew up

in.If your children have

busy schedules, they’ll appreciate that shop-ping close to home will save lots of trav-elling time. If they’re keen environmental-ists, make them aware of the fact that buying local helps to reduce greenhouse gases, not to mention all the money you’ll save on gas.

Best of all, nancial savings could trickle down to them in the form of pocket money. That will help them get the message!

Do yourself a favour and buy local for back to school supplies

By Blair Lekstrom Minister of Transpor-

tation and Infrastruc-ture

It can be easy to forget amid the activity of our day-to-day lives the ex-tent to which the truck-ing industry directly impacts each and every one of us here in British Columbia.

Truckers in B.C. are the backbone of the provin-cial economy, and once a year, as part of National Trucking Week, we take time to celebrate the out-standing workforce that helps drive B.C.’s econ-omy. More than 29,000 British Columbians work in the trucking in-dustry, which generates approximately $2 billion annually in revenues in B.C. Virtually every part of our economy depends on the trucking industry - oil and gas, forestry, mining and agriculture, just to name a few.

The trucking indus-try plays a vital role in connecting our province with intercontinental and international trad-ing partners, and ensur-ing British Columbia’s competitive position in the global marketplace. New and emerging mar-kets in Asia are provid-ing B.C. with jobs and opportunities throughout the province, and truck-ers play a crucial role in getting goods to market and supporting our posi-tion as Canada’s Paci c Gateway.

As part of the BC Jobs Plan, our goal is to boost domestic, cross-border and global export oppor-tunities, bring new in-vestment into all regions of the province, acceler-ate job creation and grow revenues which support B.C. families. The Brit-ish Columbia Trucking Association plays a key role in helping us achieve these goals.

We look forward to continuing to develop positive working rela-tionships with our indus-try partners, including the B.C. Trucking Asso-

ciation. I am proud to of -

cially proclaim Sept. 2 to 8, 2012 as National Trucking Week in B.C.
