The B.C. Teachers’ Association has served strike notice for Mon-day through Wednesday after teachers across the province endorsed the option in a province-wide vote.

The union was re-quired to give two school days’ notice before being in a legal strike position, under a Labour Relations Board ruling on essential ser-vices that allows for up to three consecutive days of full strike action next week.

Education Minister George Abbott said Thursday that schools will be open, and it’s up to parents if they want to send children to school.

The LRB ruling pro-hibits picket lines, al-lowing unionized sup-port staff to go to work. Administrators will supervise students, but normal instruction will not take place.

The B.C. government began debate Thurs-day on legislation that would extend the cur-rent teacher pay and bene ts for another six months, while a me-diator works with the BCTF and the B.C. Public School Employ-ers’ Association in an effort to nd common ground on class sizes, special needs support and other issues.

Nearly 28,000 BCTF members voted yes to the strike option out of the 32,209 who voted Tuesday and Wednes-day, after the B.C. government tabled legislation to impose a “cooling-off period” until the end of Au-gust and impose heavy nes on the union and

its members for strikes during that time.

Nearly 9,000 teach-ers did not vote, and more than 10 per cent or 4,263 voted against strike action.

Abbott and Premier Christy Clark would not specify how long the government would wait before passing that legislation, but it likely won’t be in time to pre-vent a three-day strike. Clark said she wants to give the union time to “climb down from the cliff” after seven months of working to rule, refusing to com-plete report cards and other non-essential du-ties.

Opposition leader Adrian Dix said the NDP will oppose Bill 22 in the legislature. Dix called for “real me-diation” but refused to say if he would support a raise for teachers.

BCTF president Susan Lambert has dismissed the legislation and re-strictions on mediation to work within the gov-ernment’s two-year “net zero” wage mandate as “bullying tactics.” She said an extra $30 million fund for special needs

support this year, on top of more than $800 mil-lion currently budgeted, is a “crumb” that won’t even cover in ation.

“The results of our province-wide vote are strong evidence of the unity and determination of BCTF members in rejecting this govern-ment’s provocative and damaging legislation,” Lambert said.

School District 5 no-tice:

A release from School District 5 states that teachers will not be re-porting from Monday, March 5 to Wednesday March 7.

“While school facili-ties will remain open under the supervision of school district staff, we will be unable to pro-vide students with in-struction or appropriate supervision during this period of job action. We are therefore request-ing that parents keep their children at home on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (March 5, 6, and 7),” stated the release.

The 28th Annual Wom-an of the Year Award pre-sented by the Cranbrook Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women will be awarded to Sister Nina Glinski, CND (Congregation of Notre Dame).

This year, the club re-ceived 3 very well pre-sented nominations, 2 of which will be carried forward to 2013. We also had nominations from 2011 and 2010 that we could consider if the committee had not voted 100% for Sister Nina.

“This might be confus-ing at a glance,” stated Henley who chaired the Woman of the Year Committee, “because we (CFUW) are non-po-litical and non-religious, yet we are honouring a Sister. Some of the rea-sons she was selected are because of her huge impact on everyone and anyone she has met, re-gardless of race, creed or social status, her ability to teach and create teach-ers, to instill self-respect in all she touched.

Although a Roman Catholic Sister, Nina did not exclude anyone from her care and com-passion. Nor does Nina wear robes, but rather looks like any area woman except for the constant glow that radi-ates from her. She was so open and trusted by everyone who met her, that hearing her speak at several Cranbrook and Kootenay area churches was common. One of the nominators, Arlene Davis said this about Nina, “As a teacher she

educates not only in the academic sense, but in the area of human devel-opment.”

Mary Fiorentino, the head of the nomina-tion committee for Nina wrote “I could ll pages telling of what Nina promoted in the com-munity to enhance the lives of women, but I want to talk about Nina, the person. It is because of whom she is that she is able to ful ll the mis-sion for which she came to Marywood Retreat Centre as co-director in the fall of 1996. She is an open, honest and trustworthy person; a born leader, charis-matic and a great men-tor, empowering others

by drawing forth their giftedness. She invites, inspires, challenges and encourages everyone to teach and carry on some of the programmes she initiates. Nina is a great listener, very approach-able and has a wonder-ful sense of humour. She treats all as equals and with dignity.” She is the true meaning of a teacher.

The most moving nom-ination letter came from Audrey Francis who rst met Nina in October of 2003 at an Aboriginal Support Group. Mary, a victim of the Resi-dential School era was extremely apprehen-sive of not only joining the ASG, but meeting a

Nun due to her horri c experiences as a child. Much to her surprise she observed “this down to earth woman” who spoke of her experiences that brought her to the decision to become a sis-ter. Audrey said “Wow!” and the beginnings of a long, trusting friendship was born. “Nina was there for me in the dark-est of times in my work of learning to let go and move forward”, said Au-drey. “Not once did Nina ever judge or distance

herself from me. I nally realized what a wonder-ful woman she is, and how she has taught this once “lost soul” to love, to forgive, and again, to move on”, she wrote and signed her nomination as “a very grateful citi-zen of Cranbrook”.

The members of the Cranbrook CFUW wel-come you to come to a ceremony we are host-ing on International Woman’s Day, Thursday, March 8th, 4pm at the Manual Training Centre

attached to the Public library in Cranbrook. Sister Nina is presently in South Carolina and is very involved with mis-sions there and in other States as part of her

year-long working Sab-batical. Mary Fiorentino will accept the annual plaque on Sister Nina’s behalf.

The wizard named Oz and Captain Slow. It seems like a pretty weird pairing for a show about wine, but a sure pairing for entertainment. At least that was my line of thinking when I walked out of Creston Public Li-brary with a DVD set of Oz & James’ Big French Wine Adventure.

For the unniitiated, Oz Clarke is the British ex-pert voice on wine (well, along with Jancis Robin-son) and James May, aka Captain Slow, is one of the trio who have made the Top Gear automobile series a cult television favourite. The premise of Series One, six half-hour episodes, was to have Clarke educate the beer-drinking May in the joys of French wine and winemaking.

Unfortunately, too many television series seem to be made by the same tiny group of people who assume that viewers need to be treat-ed like half-wits. It is, it seems, not enough just to provide information in clever and innovative ways. Instead, drama and tension have to be intro-duced, especially just be-fore commercial breaks. That’s why restaurant makeover shows always include last-minute dis-coveries of faulty wiring, why home reno shows always include needs for hardwood ooring, which has to be installed before tomorrow’s open house and, well the list is endless, isn’t it?

So, in Oz and James’ Big French Wine Ad-venture, the pair climb into a vehicle selected by the notoriously slow

driving May (a Jaguar XJS, which will inevi-tably break down) and head out into the coun-tryside of France where, incongruously, they will spend time sleeping in a small tent. Of course, it is a struggle to put up the tent, the weather turns rainy and the unlikely pair get on each others’ nerves at every turn. May doesn’t get, at least at the outset, the aromas and avours about which James waxes enthusiasti-cally. So James makes a habit of stopping the car to pick plants or get May down on his hands and knees to smell a fresh cow pie, all with the goal of educating the country bumpkin’s dull senses.

In the rst episode, James evens nds a tiny winery that still uses the foot stomping method to crush its grapes. The makers claimed that the traditional way is the best way to extract juice and it was at that point that I got seriously an-noyed with these ma-nipulative little moments of television. Maybe the winery does use that particular practice, but it would only be a schtick to set itself apart from the competition because I am certain that the still relatively low tech preference for air blad-der crushing is superior to foot stomping every conceivable way. But a scene showing two dra-matically different adult males getting climbing barefooted into a vat makes for better televi-sion, doesn’t it?

In the end, I am left with the thought that the Oz and James series might hold appeal to people who like their en-tertainment on the light side. But viewers who

really enjoy wine and winemaking will nd it trite and the “made for television” moments of con ict between the two stars won’t make the viewing experience any more edifying.

*****On a completely dif-

ferent note, I went home from work one day re-cently with the idea that I wanted to make a snack that would also serve as dessert for a few days. My thoughts rst turned to brownies but then lemon avours came to mind.

A quick trip to the store and I was back in the kitchen, preparing a shortbread base for lem-on bars.

I used Ina Garten’s rec-ipe from the Food Net-work web site, drawn to it perhaps because Gar-den’s cooking show has never resorted to inject-ing arti cial tension into its episodes. Instead, the lovely and soft-spoken host is simply allowed to demonstrate her passion for good food and gener-ally simple recipes.

What makes the recipe a standout is the addition of lemon zest from 4-6 lemons and a full cup of fresh-squeezed lemon juice into the lling. The result was outstanding.

Admittedly, lemon bars aren’t particularly easy to pair with wines, with the tartness and acid-ity making them a hard match. But I did think (but didn’t try it) that a chilled Moscato might work quite nicely. The more obvious choice would have been an icy shot of Limoncello, the Italian liqueur that is often served as a post-prandial to aid with di-gestion.

MLA Bill Bennett announced upcoming changes in the Legis-lature this week to BC Hydro’s Columbia Ba-sin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Steering Committee thanks to his continued efforts in collaboration with Koo-tenay residents and B.C. cabinet ministers.

“BC Hydro’s an-nouncement sent shock

waves through the Kootenay conservation community, where sh and wildlife is a pre-dominate, shared, cul-tural value; the people of the region do not take kindly to these kinds of surprises,” said Bill Bennett, East Koo-tenay MLA. “Now, here we are ve months later and I am happy to report that, due to the commit-

ment made to this le by Ministers of Energy and Mines, Environment, and Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, a comprehensive series of community engagement meetings have been set up by BC Hydro across the whole region.”

Background infor-mation:

• In October 2011 BC Hydro announced a re-structuring of its envi-ronmental department that reduced the num-ber of staff supporting the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program in the Columbia Ba-sin (Nelson and Cran-brook), the Peace region (Prince George) and in Burnaby. There was no change to funding lev-els (approximately $8 million per year).

• The model was in place to provide region-al programs to conserve and restore sh and wildlife habitats nega-tively impacted by dams and energy projects.

• Funds are used to conserve and restore sh and wildlife habitats

affected by the creation of BC Hydro dams. BC Hydro funds the pro-gram and partners with the Provincial Govern-ment and the Depart-

ment of Fisheries and Oceans to manage the conservation activities.

• Since 1988, BC Hydro has invested over

$100 million to three regional compensation programs for more than 700 projects.

• The changes an-

nounced in October 2011 meant eleven pro-gram staff would be laid off by the end of the s-cal year (March 2012).

BC Hydro or with the Province.

As much as it seems that we humans have left no stone unturned in our explorations of this plan-et, it turns out Mother Nature is still harbour-ing a few secrets.

A trio of scientists from the Royal BC Museum has discovered a rare spider near Columbia

Lake in the East Koote-nay – the rst recorded nding of this species in

Canada. “It’s a very small and

poorly known member of the cobweb spider family,” said Dr. Robb Bennett “As far as I can tell, only four or so spec-imens are known to sci-ence, including the one we found.”

It’s hard to imagine

how these biologists even spotted the wee creature. Measuring only 1.5 milimetres in length, you’d need a keen eye to nd this spider. “I was wearing a head-

band magni er like the kind a dentist uses,” said Bennet, “but the others just use their naked eye. You tune in to the search image – the pattern and texture you expect to see when you turn over a rock or pull apart a rot-ting log. Anything out of the ordinary, especially if it’s moving, will jump out at you.”

The biologists care-fully combed through leaves, fallen logs and other natural debris lit-tering the ground in search of bugs, par-ticularly tiny spiders. Most of the specimens gathered that day were relatively uninteresting, but among the collection was a small, drab spider that sparked consider-able interest despite its ho-hum appearance.

Identi ed as Dipoena provalis, the spider is known from only three other locations in North America – two near Salt

Lake City, Utah, and one near La Grande, Or-egon.

Dr. Bennett and his colleagues Claudia and Darren Copley found the spider on Marion Creek Benchlands, a newly-established conserva-tion area owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Perched on the hills above Columbia Lake, near the town of Fairmont Hot Springs, the property encompass-es grasslands, open for-ests and wetlands, and is used by elk, deer and bear, among other, much

smaller, wildlife.“We knew Marion

Creek Benchlands was an important wild-life corridor for large animals that cross the valley, as well as en-dangered species such as badger and Lewis’s woodpecker,” said Hil-lary Page, a Stewardship Coordinator with the Nature Conservancy of Canada. “But when we went in and did our bio-logical survey we dis-covered so much more.”

Other rare species found on the property include two provincially

at-risk plants and a na-tionally-threatened sh species.

“This really af rms the importance of conserva-tion science,” said Page.

The spider is now en-shrined in the Royal BC Museum’s collection.

How does it make sense that we routinely use radi-ation to detect breast can-cer when the very method of detection increases the risk for the disease it is designed to find? How has it come to pass that we have made menopause a disease when it is a nat-ural process that women have been transitioning for millennia? Is it appro-priate that we medicate our children when they have a hard time sitting still in a classroom?

Modern medicine and technology have greatly benefited all of us and I consider myself lucky to have access to it. It does seem, however, that we have gone too far and it is time for a critical look at balancing our infatuation with gadgets and drugs with what is best for the health of the person, com-munity and the planet.

Ever since the discovery of antibiotics our medical system has been hooked on finding the next great drug or piece of equip-ment that will stop dis-ease. One only has to watch television for 30

minutes to see any num-ber of promised miracle treatments for everything from cholesterol to impo-tence to insomnia.

This would all be fine and dandy if it worked. Sadly, diabetes, heart dis-ease and cancer are all on rise, despite ever increas-ing medical expenditures, complex procedures and new fangled drugs. In fact, there is strong evi-dence suggesting the use of pharmaceutical medi-cation is one of the lead-ing causes or mortality and morbidity.

In our frantic search, we have forgotten the basics: 80% of all disease is rooted in diet and life-style. What you eat, how you move and how you live your life is the single most powerful predictor of how healthy or sick you will be. I am not suggesting throwing the baby out with the bath water, only that it is up to each of us, as consum-ers of medicine, to take personal responsibility for our health and seek treatment that treats the underlying cause.

OBITUARYMacKay: Margaret Sephorah (nee Corbett)

Jan. 16, 1932 – Feb. 26, 2012With loved ones at her side, Margaret passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 26th at the age of 80 years.Margaret is survived by her chil-dren: Alan MacKay, Heather (Doug) Henwood, Robert (Darlene) MacKay, and Gordon MacKay (Jo-Anne Falkiner), 8 grandchildren: Chris (Bobbie), Allison, Julia, Jennifer, Kelly, George, Lewis and Duncan, 2 great grandchildren: Scott and

Tyson, and siblings Bill (Bev) Corbett, Len (Eva) Corbett, Catherine Corbett, Mary Powers and Alan (Evelyn) MacKay as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill, her parents Len and Sephorah Corbettt and her brothers Pat, Herb, Bud and David.In order to financially assist her family, Margaret left school at the young age of 16. She worked at the Teakettle Inn in Calgary and then in the Staff House in Seebe where she met Bill MacKay. The couple married in 1953 and Margaret’s life remained busy as she raised their 4 children and enjoyed curling in many bonspiels. In 1968 Bill’s job took the family to Bridge River, a BC Hydro Facility. While in Bridge Margaret took up oil paint-ing, a talent she enjoyed very much. By 1972 the MacKay’s had relocated to Cranbrook and it was there that Margaret added water color painting to her repitoire and became involved with the Arts Council. She was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 50 years; her faith sustaining her through many difficult times. Shortly after the death of her beloved husband in 1987, Margaret moved to Sparwood so she could be closer to her daughter Heather and her family. While in Sparwood she continued to paint and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. In 2004 Margaret moved into Lilac Terrace where she lived until her passing.Memorial Services were held at Cherished Memories “Serenity Chapel” on Wednesday, February 29th with Pastor Dennis Williamson officiating. Memorial tributes may be made in Margaret’s name to the Sisters of Notre Dame Prayer House. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

On November 7th our son Dalton was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, from that day forward we have been blessed with so many people helping us ght this horrible disease. There are no words to describe the thanks we feel in our hearts. So many have donated to help us be by our sons side. Thanks to the South Country community; all the logging businesses, stores, mills, and the radio station for advertising the bene t. A big thanks to my brother Gary and sister in law Darlene for making the bene t a great success, my mom and dad and the rest of my family for helping out. To all the people who donated to the auction, Hosmer Fire department, the band Steel Wheels for donating their time to make sure everyone had a good time. To all the people who purchased items, the auctioneer, my three step daughters, the 2 Vanna’s for doing the auction. Last but not least the Ya Ya’s for always doing what needs to be done. We are truly blessed knowing so many people care and help out when needed.

Request for Expressions of Interest Regarding an Addition to the Invermere Church

1. Introduction: Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Parish (the Parish) invites build-

ing contractors to submit an “Expression of Interest” (EOI) proposal for the upcoming construction of an addition to the Invermere Church. Short listed contractors will be invited to provide a tender for the construction of the addition.

Criteria used to evaluate the EOI submissions will be based on the demonstrated consistent satisfactory completion of recent projects of a similar size and scope, as determined by the Parish’s selection committee. Other criteria considered include; qualifi cations, ex-pertise, experience, availability, local benefi ts, corporate stability, bonding capacity and personnel that would be assigned to the project. The evaluation process will occur in a closed meeting of the Parish’s selection committee, the unsuccessful respondents will be notifi ed in writing. The parish reserves the right to limit the number of contractors that will be invited to tender the project.

All submissions received in accordance with the terms and condi-tions of the EOI process will be reviewed, the granting of prequalifi -cation status will be at the sole discretion of the Parish.

2. Overview of the Project: The proposed project consists of adding approximately 2500 square

feet of main fl oor area to the north side of the existing Invermere church.

The wood frame addition will include a full basement. Mechanical and electrical upgrades to the existing church building

will be part of the project scope.3. Deadline for Submissions: Interested contractors must submit a complete EOI package no

Opening a sum-mer cottage or cabin involves a few essential jobs if you want to have a care-free summer.

The rst step is to start up all your elec-tric appliances. Check over the outside wir-ing, looking for rodent

chew-marks, and acti-vate the main breaker, ensuring rst that the secondary breakers are all closed. Switch on the secondary breakers one at a time, checking each one individually before plugging in your appliances.

If your cottage is powered with propane, check the state of the tank, the main pipe, and any secondary connections. The idea is to detect any leaks by smelling for gas. If everything appears to be in order, ensure that

the vent is not blocked by a bird’s nest before starting your heater.

Next, check your water heater. Make sure you ll it with water before making sure it works, otherwise you will burn out the heat-ing element. Do this by turning on the hot water tap at a sink and waiting for the water to run before starting your water heater.

The next step is to check the general state of the cottage, from the roof to the foun-dations. Look for any-

thing that needs to be repaired: roof shingles, gutters, sof ts, paint, hinges, door handles, etc. Take this opportu-nity to check for ver-min or small animals that have gotten inside the cottage through the chimney, the basement, or cracks in the walls. Check any outbuildings as well.

If you have a swim-ming pool at your cottage, start it up as soon as possible so that bacteria and algae will not develop when the weather turns hot.
