A man in control of an 18,000 pound piece of machinery in the area near Rose-bery got himself in a bit of a scrape when Slocan Lake RCMP curbed his ride.

Police, according to a press release by Cst. A. Van Hussen, responded just after noon last Wednesday to a complaint of a road grader driving erratically on Wilson Creek Forest Road. There was concern that the man driving

the big machine, a Castlegar area resi-dent, was either hav-ing medical issues, or was drunk.

The 51-year-old operator was appre-hended by police and it was determined that he had been con-suming alcohol.

He failed to provide a breath sample and was issued and im-mediate driving pro-hibition. His drivers license was suspend-ed for 90 days and the grader impounded for 30 days.

Police thanked the caller who had

brought the incident to their attention, and asked that others do the same when sim-ilar situations arise. Anyone with further information on this matter is asked to contact Slocan Lake RCMP at 250-358-2222.

PUBLIC NOTICERECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act.

Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013.

The Title of the Initiative is:An initiative to amend the Police Act.

Summary of Initiative:The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make non-lawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Opponent Registration:Individuals or organizations who intend to incur expenses as opponents must apply for registration with the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, August 12, 2013. Registration applications for opponents are available from Elections BC.

Initiative Advertising:Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. Registration applications are available from Elections BC.

Who May Sign the Petition:Registered voters as of Monday, September 9, 2013 may sign the initiative petition. Individuals may only sign the petition once, and must sign the petition sheet for the electoral district in which they are registered at the time of signing. Signed petitions are available for public inspection.

For More Information:The initiative application and draft Bill are available for public inspection on the Elections BC website and at the Elections BC office at the address below.

Through the Walls of Time

Twentieth in a primar-ily alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

e Slocan City suburb of Brandon takes its name from its founder, William Henry Brandon (1857- . 1928), who came to New Denver from Ontario in the spring of 1892.

An experienced pros-pector, he held many claims, one of which resulted in his arrest in Guelph in 1894 on charges of embezzlement and conspiracy. He was alleged to have misappro-priated funds belonging to his backers. However, a sympathetic story in the Nelson Tribune suggest-ed it was all a misunder-standing, and upon his return to the area, “He had no di culty whatever in convincing his friends both here and at Guelph that his mining partners were a little too hasty in bringing an action against him.” It’s not clear how the case was resolved.

e earliest mention

of Brandon’s namesake neighbourhood was in the Nelson Miner of Au-gust 15, 1896, which stat-ed that “ e Two Friends and Howard Fraction have ore at Brandon ready for shipment to the smelt-er.”

But it took until Octo-ber 3 for the paper to clar-ify that Brandon and Slo-can City were both at the foot of Slocan Lake.

A post o ce applica-tion was led on July 28,

1896 but the inspector’s report two months later stated: “A post o ce at Slocan City having been authorized, there appears to be no necessity for one at Brandon.”

Only one photo of Brandon in its heyday is known to exist. Published in the British Columbia Mining Record of Febru-ary 1897 (though prob-ably taken the previous fall or summer) it shows a row of false-fronted

buildings along Park Av-enue. None of them still stands, for a few months later much of Brandon’s business district moved to

Slocan en masse.Despite this, a second

post o ce application was submitted on April 24, 1897 and this time the inspector recommended approval.

“ e distance is fully a mile between the post of- ce at Slocan City and the site of the proposed o ce at Brandon,” he wrote, though it was actually a lot closer. “ ere is a nat-ural division between the two towns, which gives

each a separate and dis-tinct character … e establishment of a post o ce at Brandon will be a great convenience to the residents there.” However, it never opened.

Alfred Driscoll sur-veyed the Brandon town-site and deposited the plan with the land regis-try on October 3, 1898. It consisted of 11 blocks with two avenues, Park and Arlington, and three streets, Springer, Finch, and Falls. By 1902, 134 lots remained unsold and Nelson mayor/realtor/newspaper publisher John Houston was instructed to sell them o cheap, along with an unplatted portion of 50 to 60 acres.

While many overtures were made to amalgam-ate Slocan and Brandon, it never happened.

Today you would hard-ly guess that Brandon is outside village limits but for the fact its streets have its name in parenthesis.

By 1928, William Bran-don lived in Winnipeg. His brother Daniel (1856- . 1911) built and oper-ated the Selkirk Hotel in Silverton.

When Grand Forks Secondary School stu-dent Maxwell Nicholson entered the Discov-er Trades BC contest, he never thought that he would come this far. With the votes from friends, family, and local supporters Nicholson and his videographer Nate Klassen won.

Trail residents may soon see improve-ments in the entrance to the downtown cor-ridor as the city has slated construction to begin later this month.

The city has award-ed a local company, Maglio Installations, to begin construction on the Victoria Street Corridor project once necessary Ministry of Transportation (MOT) permits are approved.

The total contract cost is $1.6 million with the Nelson gen-eral contracting com-pany receiving $1.4 million for the first phase of construc-tion.

The realm of the work on the Gateway project will involve extensive infrastruc-ture improvements along Victoria Street, which include: new curbs and drainage; sidewalk resurfac-ing and realignment; bump outs; improved pedestrian crossings; and centre medians delineated for future planting.

There will be some

traffic pattern chang-es to accommodate construction along Victoria Street, said Andrea Jolly, Trail’s communications and events coordinator.

A crew will be on site between the hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. to allow parts of the job that can’t be completed during the hotter hours of the day, she added.

The city’s goal is to wrap up the con-struction phase of the project by the fall of 2013, at which time the MOT is set to be-gin repaving Victoria Street.

The remainder of

the costs earmarked for the second phase of the project, has been awarded to Hil-Tech Construction, and includes the sup-ply and installation of gateway features at Bay, Pine and Cedar avenues.

After a series of setbacks the last few years. the Victo-ria Street Corridor project remained a top priority for Trail council when plan-ning the 2013 budget.

At a February meeting, Coun. Rick Georgetti presented the governance and operations commit-tee(GOC) report,

which confirmed that council approved $1.1 million in its 2013 Capital Budget to proceed with the work.

Earlier that month, city staff partook in a conference call with the project’s design firm, MMM Group, to discuss the status of the project.

The firm’s report states that the design elements will have a traffic calming effect which will slow traffic through the city and also improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

Representatives from 22 City Furniture locations across B.C. and Alberta converged on Castlegar, whose Manjeet, Nav and Jas Natt played host for the company’s annual charity golf tournament at the Castlegar Golf Club on Monday, July 15. Each year a worthy re-cipient is chosen to be supported by the tournament... this year it was the Castlegar and District Hospital Foundation, which received $3,500. A thrilled Nettie Stupnikoff, director/treasurer of the foundation, expressed very much gratitude for the donation, adding that the funds will be used for upgrading the lobby of the Castlegar Heath Centre, making it more comfortable and welcoming. Ah, summer, gotta love it – good times, barbecues, swim-ming, boating and spending fun- lled times at our recre-ational properties. For many families, the vacation property evokes fond memories of days gone by and strong sentimental attachments. ese feelings can o en make it very di cult for the owners to decide about the future use and ownership of the property. It can make for stress-ful moments, especially when the options aren’t known and the implications are unclear.

Where there is a desire to pass on the vacation proper-ty to future generations, many questions o en arise about the di erent transfer options that might be available. It’s one thing to own recreational property here in Canada but, owning a vacation property situated out-side of Canada may give rise to other issues. For example, prop-erty situated in the U.S. may be subject to U.S. estate tax. Profes-sional advice should be obtained from advisors in the country where the property is located. In addition to tax issues, owners should consider having a will and power of attorney prepared in accordance with the laws of the country where the property is located.

One of the primary decisions that should be made is wheth-

er the transfer of the vacation property to children should take place during your lifetime or whether it should be dealt with only on death. Here are some options worth considering:

1) Transfer options may in-clude gi ing the vacation prop-erty outright to one or more children during your lifetime. is might be considered if the vacation property is to pass to the children eventually in any event. It could also bene t you if there is a wish to have the children more involved in the maintenance of the vacation property.

2) Joint ownership of prop-erty can, in some circumstanc-es, be a useful estate planning technique. With this option, the parents would transfer a joint interest in the vacation property to the children so that the par-ents and children own the vaca-tion property jointly.

3) Another option is to the sell the vacation property to the children if it is going to be passed to them anyways. Per-haps the parents need or want the proceeds of the sale for their own living expenses now or for other purposes.

4) Transferring the vacation

property to a “lifetime trust” with the children named as ben-e ciaries. is may be an op-tion especially when the parents wish to maintain some control over the property (including the ability to continue using the property during their lifetime). e terms of the trust agree-ment can be dra ed in order to protect the interests and con-cerns of the parents while alive.

5) Rather than transferring the vacation property during your lifetime, you may wish to make a speci c gi of your va-cation property to your children in your will. You may wish to retain ownership until a er you pass away.

6) Another option is to state in your will that the vacation property is to be o ered for sale to one or more of your children. e issues or concerns with this could be disagreements if more than one child wishes to pur-chase the property. ere will need to be a mechanism for determining the purchase price and payment terms which are fair to all family members, in-cluding a provision for equaliza-tion payments, if appropriate.

7) Rather than an outright transfer, another possibility is to use a trust in your will (a testa-mentary trust) to hold the vaca-tion property.

When a vacation property is transferred to a trust, the trust becomes the legal owner of the property. Because the trust would own the vacation proper-ty, future increases in the value of the property would accumu-late within the trust. However, a trust is considered to have disposed of its property at fair market value on the 21st anni-

versary of the creation of the trust. As a result, there would be capital gains owing at that time or earlier, if it is wound up prior to that point.

As you can see, this is hard-ly a one-size- ts-all solution as there are various options that might work. But with each choice, there are myriad tax im-plications, probate issues and other factors to consider. is decision should not be taken lightly.

Open and honest family dis-cussions should take place rst simply to get a sense of what the next generation may be think-ing.

With all that in mind, further discussions with your wealth and estate planner are vital. It may be necessary to approach this with a team of advisors in-cluding your accountant and lawyer as well.

Everyone wants those special summer-time memories to con-tinue for many years to come. Planning now, can ensure that your wishes are ful lled and es-tate hassles are kept to a mini-mum.

Nelson Kootenay Lake is open for business, with mar-kets, festivals, and more on the agenda for you to enjoy. e roads are open and fer-ries are in full swing, so come and nd out why most visi-tors never want to leave.

July 10, 2013 --- Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism is as-suring tourists that all roads and ferries are operating as usual, and the area is ready to welcome visitors for the peak summer season.

Calgary, Canmore and sur-rounding communities expe-rienced the worst oods in decades last month, forcing tens of thousands from their homes. A state of emergency was declared in Alberta and dozens of roads and bridges were closed or washed away, including several major high-ways. Ban was also hit hard, but most highways including the TransCanada from the west, have since re-opened. Food and fuel supplies have also been restored.

Financial aid and support is pouring in as recovery ef-forts continue in Alberta. But with much confusion sur-rounding road accessibility in the broader region, Nel-son Kootenay Lake Tourism Executive Director Dianna Ducs is assuring visitors that the Nelson Kootenay Lake region is open for business.

“I have received many in-quiries from visitors who are under the impression that we are not accessible. We were not signi cantly a ected by

heavy rainfall and are oper-ating as usual,” Ducs says. “We want to emphasize that the roads are open, ferries are running to full capacity, and we are ready to welcome vis-itors for the summer season.”

e Nelson-Nelway High-way is open in all directions and remains in a good con-dition west to Castlegar and south towards Salmo on Highway 6. e 3A Highway to Balfour is also operating as usual and Highway 31 is now clear up to Lardeau and be-yond. Tra c is also operating as normal on the Salmo Cres-ton Pass along Highway 3.

In addition, all local ferries are operating as usual, in-cluding the Galena Bay Ferry from Revelstoke via Highway 23 and the Fauquier Fer-ry which connects travelers from Vernon via Highway 6. e Kootenay Lake Ferry is also operating its summer schedule until Labour Day, o ering 15 daily departures on board the M.V Osprey and M.V Balfour.

Passengers can board the 35 minute service for free with cars, trucks and bicycles all year round.

With a packed calendar of events this season, Ms Ducs says summer is an ideal time to visit Nelson Kootenay Lake and experience what the region has to o er.

“ ere is so much going on over the summer, including Artwalk, the internationally renowned Kaslo Jazz Festival and the Fat Tire Fest. It’s also market season and the Baker Street Market Fest is return-

ing to Nelson each month over the summer. Now is a great time to come and ex-perience the warm weather and unique culture of Nelson Kootenay Lake,” Ms Ducs says.

More than 1000 visitors are expected to attend this year’s Kaslo Jazz Festival, with an impressive line-up of jazz, blues and soul musicians to take to the stage over the Au-gust long weekend (August 2-4). Recently recognized as one of the Top 10 Places to Enjoy Outdoor Summer Music by the Edmonton Sun, visitors are encouraged to book their tickets and ac-commodation ahead of time to avoid missing out.

Artwalk 2013 is also in full swing in Nelson and Kaslo, with artworks from local ar-tisans on show right across town. Visitors can browse artworks from dozens of cel-ebrated artists and discover how the region earned the ti-tle as one of the best small art towns in America.

e 31st annual Cysowg’n’Fun triathlon will also return to Nelson on August 4, followed by the Fat Tire Festival on August 23-25. Marking its 18th year running, the annual festival will bring bike lovers togeth-er for three days of riding, competitions and fun.

If world class art and mu-sic, fresh air and water, big city dining, boutique shop-ping and spas are what you’re looking for, then what are you waiting for?

Come pay us a visit!

Sharona Witwicki has been bodybuilding for close to three years and is gaining more prominence, most recently placing third at the BC Amateur Bodybuilding Association (BCABBA) provincials.

Witwicki, who works at the local Canadian Im-perial Bank of Commerce branch by day, was up against 300 competitors at the Massey eatre in New Westminster, B.C. on June 22.

“ e provincials are very high calibre and everyone brought their A game,” Witwicki explained, add-ing that judges stated they normally choose the top- ve very easily and that was not the case this year.

In the next two years, she can compete at the na-

tionals but Witwicki, along with her coaches Al and Nancy Clark decided to wait a year for the big test even though the 2013 Biki-ni, Figure, Fitness and Phy-sique Championships also

take place in New West-minster on Aug. 17.

“It was a hard decision because I could have sup-ported my own province while being in my prov-ince,” Witwicki said.

However, she is attend-ing the high pro le event this year to watch and Wit-wicki said it is important to go and take in the specta-cle. is way when she can get an opportunity to see what the judges are looking for, she will have a better

idea on what to change for next year.

e focussed and deter-mined cometitor indicates that when she does eventu-ally compete she is “going in to win” and placing in nationals is very important for a bodybuilder because it is a way to advance in the sport.

Placing at the nationals would mean that Witwicki would qualify for her pro-card, which would then allow her to compete on an international level as an International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) and tness pro.

Witwicki is especial-ly grateful to her coach-es Al and Nancy Clark of BodyEdge Fitness for help-ing her with her training.

“ ere’s just no way I could have got where I am without their help,” Wit-wicki went on to say.

Selkirk nursing graduate, Kara Sund-berg, recently won the University of Vic-toria (UVic) Faculty of Human and Social Development Award of Distinction for the highest grade point average (GPA) of all graduates in the fac-ulty.

Sundberg’s GPA was not only the highest in her nursing program, it was the highest in the faculty, which included stu-dents from seven oth-er programs.

“I feel honoured to have won this award, especially among so many great students in my graduating class,” she said.

Sundberg lives in Crescent Valley and chose to attend Sel-kirk’s nursing pro-gram because she had the option to stay closer to home while obtaining her degree from UVic.

“It was very im-portant for me to have the option to study at Selkirk and stay close to home,” she said. “I don’t think I would have gone back to school if the option wasn’t available.”

She earned her first degree from UVic in biology and began working in forestry and fisheries, but de-veloped an interest in human physiology,

which led her to nurs-ing.

Nursing seem a great fit for Sundberg and she has been de-scribed by her senior instructors as quiet-ly accomplished and humble, offering se-rene care for others, especially those who are marginalized in society.

“Kara is very sup-portive of people in need, whether it’s been another student in her class, clients and patients, or those living on the fringe,” said Ruth Dubois, nursing program co-ordinator and one of Kara’s instructors. “Along with her ac-ademic excellence, she has always valued helping people and has focused on holis-tic and collaborative ways to do that.”

Sundeberg’s expe-rience at Selkirk was

positive and support-ive.

“The instructors were incredibly per-sonable and support-ive, and the small class size and diversi-ty of practicum expe-riences provided me with a great learning environment,” she said.

“I also wanted to get involved in my community and thought nursing was a good fit for this.”

She is now working as a nurse on a med-ical unit at Koote-nay Lake Hospital in Nelson and her plans are to pursue a career in Nelson or the sur-rounding area.

“This is my com-munity and this is where I hope to re-main,” said Sundberg. “I hope to gain as much experience as I can over the next year or two and eventually

specialize.”Offering a positive

and supportive learn-ing environment, as well as the ability to

stay close to home and study, builds on Selkirk’s strategic di-rections to increase enrolments, and en-

gage the wider com-munity in learning and developing inno-vative programs and services.

This is one of those moments where it is appropriate to look down at someone’s breasts.

The latest instal-ment of Busted–rais-ing awareness around breast health issues and cancer – is back in the West Koote-nay at the Esprit de la Femme this summer.

Although the show is staged in Nelson, the breast bust subject models and their re-spective artists come from across the West Kootenay region.

There are 16 plas-ter busts of 16 wom-en—ranging in age from teens to seven-ties—professionally and artfully designed by 16 Kootenay art-ists. The show that began as one woman’s homage to her moth-er’s battle with breast cancer has come back to where it started.

Show curator, art-ist, model and vi-sionary Safire Jones said, after raising over $2,000 from the first show last year, there needed to be a second one.

“It’s been an amaz-ing journey and expe-rience sharing heart warming stories with all of these women,” she said about the show’s continuing od-yssey. “This has been such a fulfilling proj-ect that has now again come to fruition.”

It’s the body form

as art and Art on the body when the aes-thetics of 16 busts lavished with artistic inspiration deliver the message of under-standing who your breast friends are.

“You need to know your breasts,” said Jones, also one of the featured artists. “This show is to re-mind people to take the matters of breast health into their own hands.”

The slate of artists includes Rabia, Ni-cole Rose, Bubzee, Avrell Fox, Sydney Evans, Kelly Shpeley, Della Schafer, Jessica Tessier, Robyn Gold, Lada Love, Alana Cronshaw, Jody De-verney, Connie Coco-lala, Donna Ramsay, Cindy Moser and Sa-fire Jones.

The show was inspired by Jones’ mother, Lyn, 63, who died from breast can-cer in ChristChurch, New Zealand, two years ago. She went through chemothera-py, a mastectomy ra-diation therapy, and hormone therapy,

but succumbed to the disease less than one year and a half after diagnosis.

The show contains information from Willow, a support network for people living with a diagno-sis of breast cancer, on breast examinations and breast health. Proceeds from the auction of the busts at the end of the show in September will again be split between Wil-low and something beautiful for the on-cology ward (cancer treatment) at Koote-nay Lake Hospital.

Willow is a support network for people living with a diagno-sis of cancer, as well as those who are touched by the dis-ease through a loved one, making sure no one faces cancer alone.

The organiza-tion (www.willow.org) helps people across the country with a wide range of supports, includ-ing peer counselling, self examination in-formation, alterna-tive and traditional treatments, a huge resource centre and links to other helpful organizations.

The pieces can be viewed in Nelson at Esprit de la Femme on Baker Street, as well as online at www.safirejones.com.

For more infor-mation on the show, contact Safire Jones at 551-2799.

Arts & Culture

A visit to an art gal-lery is meant to be an experience that will inspire, stimulate and sometimes challenge the viewer. e next exhibition opening at the Kootenay Gallery on July 26 will cer-tainly do just that.

Miscreants - Mis-chievous and De ant is an exhibition of work by Denman Is-land artist Scot Bul-lick. e exhibition includes two dimen-

sional pieces created in paint, crayon, pen-cil and three dimen-sional pieces carved in stone, cast in bronze and even felt-ed in wool. But always relating to a common theme: monsters.

Bullick’s miscre-ants, or monsters, whether modeled and cast, carved, or cre-ated from found or discarded materials, move between vil-lainous and friendly, and o en times are misunderstood.

As curator, Helen Sebelius, states, Bul-lick presents “a view into a world where so-cial, political and fa-milial tales are retold with varying degrees

of despair, criticism and humour.” ese are not necessarily all scary monsters as some are o eat and project a sense of play.

e viewer is chal-lenged to defy the monsters that sur-round us everyday or maybe even the mon-ster hidden with our-selves.

is powerful exhi-bition will be showing at the Kootenay Gal-lery until September 14. e artist and cu-rator will be in atten-

dance at the opening reception on July 26 at 7 p.m.

For the duration of this exhibition the Gallery gi shop will be expanded to include the smaller gallery space provid-ing an opportunity to view even more of

the wonderful work created by local art-ists and cra speople. Now open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visit us on facebook or on our website at www.kootenaygallery.com” www.kootenaygal-lery.com.

Everyone – even a misunderstood monster, has their nice side SUBMITTED

The next exhibition showing at the Kootenay Gallery will include sco bunny, by Scot Bullick.

The Kootenay Robust-ers Dragon Boat Team recently competed in the recreational women’s di-vision of the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival. The event was held at Hender-son Lake on July 5, 6 and 7. Since launching their dragon boat at the begin-ning of May, the team, with members from Trail, Rossland, Grand Forks, Christina Lake and Cas-tlegar, has been paddling three times a week under the direction of coach Tr-ish Ostlund, to get ready

for this early season chal-lenge.

In total, 16 women’s teams raced each other for top honours, compet-ing in four heats to deter-mine placement. By the end of the tournament, the Robusters had taken first place in the A division consolation round. Con-sidering that the top four teams who took part in the A division medal round were youthful amazons, the Robusters (whose av-erage age is 60) were quite pleased with their results – placing fifth overall.

Most dragon boat festi-

vals hold a special race for breast cancer survivors, since so many women’s teams have been orga-nized to provide emotion-al and physical support to survivors and to raise awareness in communi-ties across the world. For this race, the Robusters blended with a team from Cranbrook, Abreast in the Rockies, since neither team had enough survi-vors to compete on their own. Despite never hav-ing paddled together be-fore, the combined group managed a second place finish, only one second be-

hind the winning team. The Robusters are now

taking a break for three weeks and will be starting their practices again early in August – with a plan to compete in the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival in early September. Before starting up again, the Ro-busters would like to re-cruit more paddlers, invit-ing any woman interested in dragon boating to come for a paddle. The team welcomes breast cancer survivors and those who wish to paddle as support-ers. For more information please contact 365-5953.

Verna Chernoff has plenty to smile about. For one thing, her multi-month project which con-tains close to 5,000 pieces is complete, and for another, it has been judged nu-mero uno by a panel of experts in the field of quilting.

In fact, at last month’s Canadian

Quilters’ Guild an-nual event, held in Penticton, Chern-off ’s “Arabian Nights” earned First Place, the Award of Excel-lence in the Canadi-an Juried Quilt Show.

Hundreds of en-tries from all across Canada and several U.S. states were part of the show.

“My goal is to get out of my pajamas before my husband gets home from

work,” said Cher-noff of her normal quilting timetable. The winning effort took her “four or five months.” The num-ber of hours was not exactly stated.

“Any chance I get, I work on the quilt,” she said. “It’s an ad-diction that I have. I’m always in my sewing room, quilt-ing up something.”

Of the many sub-missions there were

92 quilts to make the cut and be selected to be a part of the juried portion. After close scrutiny the judg-es chose “Arabian Nights” number one.

“This was the biggest piece in the show,” said Chernoff.

Although financial considerations are not what motivates her, she did accept the $750 that came as part of the Award of Excellence.

HAFI adapts homes for B.C. seniors and people with disabilities

Brenda has always been an active woman. However, recent health issues including osteoarthritis in her left knee and losing kidney function have slowed her down. Her mobility is limited and she is now on dialysis three days a week. To adjust to her changed circumstances, Brenda sought help with her daily living activities.

Part of that help came from the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program offered through BC Housing. Launched in January 2012, the HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Brenda applied for a new walk-in bathtub because she couldn’t safely get out of the tub on her own. Walk-in tubs include additional safety measures such as anti-slip floors, grab bars, and a very low step in.

Home adaptations may also include handrails in halls or stairs, ramps for

easier access, easy-to-reach work and storage areas in the kitchen, lever handles on doors or faucets, walk-in showers, and bathtub grab bars and seats.

Brenda is a strong advocate for the program and has even shared HAFI brochures with nurses in the renal unit where she undergoes dialysis. If you or someone you know is having difficulty performing day-to-day activities safely and independently – the HAFI program may be able to help.

Since the program began, more than 300 households completed renovations with HAFI financial assistance, making it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to continue to live in the safety and comfort of their home.

Sculpture Talk

‘In Between’ (wood)

e collaborative installation by the duo of Shayne Brandel and Ian Johnston is

somewhat atypical for Castlegar Sculp-turewalk – they intend to construct their monolithic piece ‘In Between’ mere days before the event launches.

“We see it as an interactive conversa-tion between us, albeit one taking place in three dimensions,” says Johnston. “Process drives both of us, so we’ve got this back and forth that carries on ar-tistically. Instead of words, Shayne and I will be conversing using form, space and materials starting from opposite sides of an envisioned arch. It opens up many possibilities. Will there be symmetry and congruousness, or will the end result of the ‘conversation’ be dramatic, apparent di erence?”

In terms of sheer size, Johnston and Brandel’s piece will be the largest instal-lation on display at this year’s Sculpture-walk. Arguably, it will be one of the most unorthodox sculptures, particularly given the installation process. It is also the only sculpture consisting mainly of 2 X 4’s in this year’s event, so it boast a number of unique traits already. But the question nearly everyone who sees it will ask is this: “What exactly does it depict?”

‘In Between’ is less about the end result than the ongoing process,” says Brandel. “On some level, I think the goal for most artists is to represent reality, however subjective that may be. My personal in-terest in that representation lies within the ongoing fragmentation of reality, the process of the physical, and the ephem-eral quality in which we take it all in. Objects, surfaces and forces we interact with are in a constant state of opposition.”“ is is two individuals starting from potentially dissimilar perspectives and seeing where conversing through the creative process takes them,” adds John-ston. “ e middle of the piece will be the common point. Beyond that, who knows?”

Because both of them are conscious of consumption in modern society – in-deed, a large part of Johnston’s body of

work has had that speci c focus – they have ensured all the wood making up their ‘conversation’ will be re-used.

Johnston’s background is architectural. He studied at Carleton University in Ottawa and also spent time at the pres-tigious Bauhaus Dessau Foundation Kolleg co-developing and implementing group idea processes. He is acclaimed for his extravagant, multi-installation works exploring refuse and consump-tion. Whether using ceramic multiples of plastic bags or re-visioned light bulbs ( e Antechamber: Between the Lines (Georgia) from Re-Inventing Consump-tion: 2010-2013), boxes, and cell phones (Cellular Brick Road from Refuse Cul-ture: 2007-2010 is sinuous and stun-ning) his art is large, provocative and profound.

Brandel studied sculpture and drawing in Kelowna at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus while pursuing painting on his own time. e intriguing, progressive Silence: Day 13 to Day 99 is a spectral, gray-dominated se-ries that displays his diversity and vision. Lately, he has re-focused on sculpture in stimulating installations using puzzle pieces (Jig is Up) or playing cards (What’s the Angle) as central components care-fully juxtaposed with other everyday objects.

Both based in Nelson, Brandel and John-ston are innovative, avant-garde artists whose creative thought processes and vision o en parallel – inviting their col-laborative e ort. ‘In Between’ promotes marrying their process-driven creativity in an exploratory way. We’ll nd out how it worked, post-‘conversation’ as it were.

‘A Band of Ravens’(steel and bronze)

Multi-media artist John McKinnon returns to Castlegar Sculpturewalk with another work that shows his diversity and skill regardless of the material he is working with, or the subject matter. is time it’s birds – and what spectacular birds they are.

Ravens are notoriously intelligent, highly respected in indigenous cul-tures for their canniness and cun-ning, clever ways. McKinnon had ample time to study their habits and physiognomy during the many years he spent in Canada’s North teaching Inuit sculptors modern stone tech-niques while absorbing their tradi-tional soapstone skills.

‘A Band of Ravens’ captures the group of tricksters in beautiful detail and full ight, spreading as they descend from a slightly elevated single line. Here he has seven of them wheel-ing down in tight formation, wings at various angles as they branch o . Each bird is beautifully styled and collectively the work ows impres-sively. McKinnon captures the notion of density but each bird is positioned so appropriately that the overall e ect is dramatic, cohesive and beautifully balanced.

As he notes in the name plate that accompanies ‘A Band of Ravens’, his intent is to create the illusion of ight. He has succeeded completely. ey skim along in a chaotic but ordered manner, wings outspread in various poses.

“I’ve been working with the idea of creating large compositions using a combination of smaller pieces,” he says. “ e ight of the ravens seemed a natural way to put the idea to prac-tice. I deliberately bunched them fairly close together, so the nished sculpture had balance and solidity at once. Spacing them too far apart would have resulted in a disjointed, unbalanced end product.”

McKinnon is comfortable in a wide range of mediums – from snow and sand to ice, serpentine, bronze, lime-stone and steel – and many more besides. His imposing sandstone and marble human bonding commissions are familiar sites around his home-town of Nelson (Nelson and District

Community Centre, Kootenay Lake District Hospital, Lakeside and Gyro Park, among others) but he has also created recycled metal bears – Junk-yard Bear in Cranbrook - abstract human form studies in alabaster, an-hydrite and steatite - Torso, Female Form, Mother Form - and mixed me-dia installations using a plethora of materials across Canada and beyond.

A master sculptor and artist who has honed his talent over 40 years across all mediums, McKinnon is perhaps proudest of his personal eight acre sculpture garden, featuring his own diverse works along with collected pieces from peers and contempo-raries. With ‘A Band of Ravens’ he has created another striking work that would look fantastic anywhere; the distinctive stylized pattern of the birds will be unmistakeable at Sculpturewalk. Ultimately, it will likely grace his own collection, tting in beautifully amid the trees o his Granite Road studio.

The owers may already be apparent but it may take a year to bear real fruit.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Taking new leads and directions is an important theme for you these days. Doing so is directly linked to expanding your network and increasing your exposure. Re ning your skills and increasing your income is a braided theme. These are activating your creative inventiveness and deepening your overall scope of awareness.

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Things are shaking and you are paying attention and getting noticed. For the sake of love, family, friendship and perhaps reputation you feel motivated to act. With emotions running high you feel moved in an unprecedented way. This is producing waves of change in your closest relationships. The drama will increase as the Moon waxes to full.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Who are you? This question is ringing in your mind as you re ect upon yourself and your life, the roads you have travelled, your experiences and regarding what to do next. A few quick glances back in time are outweighed by future visions. Dreams to be and do bigger and better than ever are giving you reason to feel excited.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Old priorities, values, attitudes and their consequent in uence of your choices are all changing now. This process will take a while yet to unfold, up to 2-3 years in fact. In the short term, simply clearing and cleaning where and how you can, will feel good. This is a time of ending, completion and closure. Honor this process yet cast a glance at the renewal to follow.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)A big activation of some of your closest relationships is center stage now. Choosing your words carefully is extra important, as is how you express your feelings. Moderation is the golden rule - neither too little nor too much. Meanwhile, your world is opening up and this will contribute to a whole new state of balance.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)You are steadily entering new territory. Whether for nancial necessity, pro t, new priorities and/or interests you are moved to take those important initial steps. These include calculated risks. A change of attitude and perspective at least and possibly even a measurable shift in your overall lifestyle is implied.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)An exciting creative cycle has begun for you. Yet, to succeed you will have to give to the situation whole heartedly; half measures or partial focus will not do. However, do allow for some diversity in your focus. A rather large learning curve process requiring long term commitment is featured. Be willing to learn from others who can train and guide you.

Horoscope for the Week July 18, 2013Horoscope for theTip of the Week: A powerful line-up of planetary alignments is the celestial backdrop ‘synchronizing’ with world events now. On July 14th Mars entered Cancer where it traditionally proves to cut, carve and renovate with a sharp edge. On July 17th Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune formed an exact Grand Trine (each planet exactly 120 degrees apart) in the three Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces respectively. Together these indicate deep change and transformation (Saturn in Scorpio) with mass spiritual implications (Neptune in Pisces) activated by huge events and both the source of and the consequence of big and widespread emotional sentiments (Jupiter in Cancer). Next on July 20th, the day Mercury in Cancer turns Direct, Mars will take its turn completing the Grand Trine in Water with Saturn and Neptune. Then, on July 22 under the light of the Full Moon in Aquarius on the rst day of the Sun’s cycle in Leo, Mars will conjunct Jupiter in Cancer reinforcing this Water Grand Trine alignment. Mars will heat things up that much more on July 27th when it forms an exact Opposition to Pluto on the same day that the Moon forms a Conjunction with Uranus and then will actually form a Square to Uranus on July 31, thereby reinforcing the lingering and potent Square aspect between Uranus and Pluto. Thus, Mars will weave the Water Grand Trine with the Uranus/Pluto Square. The manifestation of this weave of dynamic planetary energies stands to be at least a continuation of the social and political hotspots on the planet such as Syria, Egypt and Brazil, and probably an in ation of these and the ignition of others yet. These powerful activations will continue through August and every month for the rest of the year culminating with Comet Ison which is scheduled to come into view as early as late November. I will elaborate on the July events next week and bring even more attention to the big August activations in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!

Consumer Caution

“Hi, Gram, I need your help and you have to promise not to tell Mom and Dad. I got arrested in Mexico and I need $2,000 bail money...”

“Grandpa, I’m in London with my college roommate. You re-member Carol? We were robbed last night in a pub and now I have no money to get home.”

Consumer scams are a serious problem in Canada, and this is one of the most common: the Emer-gency Scam, where the scammer poses as a friend or family mem-ber in trouble, often overseas, and requests that money be sent. It’s sometimes called the

Grandparent Scam because se-niors are often targeted by scam-mers pretending to be grandchil-dren.

During the summer travel sea-son, there is an increased potential for Emergency or Grandparent Scams to occur. More people are traveling, and whenever people are vulnerable, fraudsters will gen-erally attack.

Emergency scams play off peo-ple’s emotions and strong desire to help others in need.

Scammers impersonate their victims’ loved ones, often using information they’ve picked up on social media, and make up an ur-gent situation - I’ve been arrested,

I’ve been mugged, I’m in the hos-pital. The scammer makes an ur-gent plea for help...and money.

In most cases, the scammer asks for money to be wired imme-diately.

The victim often responds quickly and without checking first to see if the pleading voice on the other end of the phone really is their grandchild or other loved one.

Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to protect con-sumers from Emergency Scams during the summer travel season:

• Do not wire money to a strang-

er you have not met in person.

• Investigate by verifying the information with family members and friends first and ignore the caller’s plea not to tell others.

• Never send funds received by cheque until it officially clears in your account, which can take sev-eral days, or more.

• Watch out for email scams. Often someone you know may have had their email high jacked by a scammer, so do not trust an emergency via email unless you have verified it first.

You can also “Report a Scam”,

and learn more on other summer scams on www.mbc.bbb.org.

Emergency scams rise with summer travel

e Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, received $22, 054 for Castle-gar from the Forest Legacy Foundation through the Raise A Reader Campaign. e funds will be used to provide fam-ily literacy programs such as Conversation Club for ESL families, Parent Child Mother-Goose, Food Literacy, Kindergarten Readi-ness, Parents as Lit-eracy Supporters and Adult Upgrading.

Forest Legacy Foundation raises

funds through the West Coast Pulp Charity Invitational Golf Tournament as part of the campaign. e annual golf tour-nament is generously supported by various forest products com-panies, international

pulp agencies, global transportation com-panies, business ser-vices and industry an-alysts and is the single largest fundraiser for the BC Raise A Read-er campaign. e idea behind the charity is to be able to give something back to the community that supports the forestry business. In Castlegar, this is Mercer Inter-national.

“Forest Legacy Foundation believes in giving back to our communities and we truly believe literacy is a positive invest-ment for the future of our children,” said Terry Prefontaine, Forest Legacy Foun-dation.

e Raise A Read-er campaign is unique in that it focuses and promotes family liter-acy within the prov-ince of B.C. through Decoda Literacy Solutions, the provin-cial literacy organiza-tion.

e B.C. govern-ment generously adds to the fundraised amount. e money raised goes directly to the literacy task groups in each com-munity and they, in turn, apply the funds to where the literacy needs are greatest.

Ashland Training Centre (ATC) is working together to help bring communi-ty-based work experiences to local individuals who are currently seeking long-term job search help, supported work experience and fol-

low-up support service. Ashland Training Centre approached the communi-ty organizations in hopes they could partner together to o er these individuals some job experience that aligns with the Job Options BC (WORC = Work Op-portunities Referrals and

Connections) Program.CPR museum director

Deb McIntosh o ered ATC two community projects providing safe work sites, a skilled person to instruct and mentor the workers. e rst project involves re-moving debris, old shrub-bery, cleaning paths and

large branches on Zuck-erberg Island. e second project includes cleaning, repair and overall mainte-nance on the Castlegar Mu-seum.

Ashland Training Centre sees the partnership as an excellent gateway to hands-on work experience for the

program participants. “ e gained experience from the local organizations will take them a long way,” says Stephanie Allen, Team Leader of the Program for ATC. Funding for the pro-gram is provided through the Canada-British Colum-bia Labour Market Agree-

ment. e group currently working has been busy on Zuckerberg Island, and will hopefully make a big enough dent that the next group could start on other areas within the organiza-tion. For more information please contact Stephanie Allen at 250-365-0966.
