‘Jack’ was born John Alfred Staples in Collingwood Ontario. He issurvived by wife Maggie, sons John (Joanne) of Ridgeway, Ontario andTim of Niagara on the Lake, Ontario; and sister Marion of Morden, On-tario and Marion’s sons, Rob (Sudbury) and Mark Lefreniere (Kelowna).

Jack’s love of sports and team participation started in youth. He enjoyedbaseball, golf, football, weight training, cycling, boxing and hockey atwhich he excelled, playing Junior A in Ontario. Of all the sports Jack en-

joyed, hockey was his passion. He coached locally in Kaslo, and many ofthe youth he inspired and encouraged became friends of his for the restof his life. Jack played until he was 78.

His working career began as a deckhand on the Great Lake freighters. Hisdedication to his fellow workers drove him to eventually become presi-dent of the Canadian Maritime Union when he was 29 years of age. Jackworked and fought for the rights of workers to collectively bargain andwith other labour leaders of that time lobbying government, was ableto achieve legislation that brought a Labour Day into effect in Canada.

During the 1970s he enjoyed a sabbatical for a decade, and travelledextensively working with migrant farm workers throughout North Amer-ica. This rich time of exploration, travel and learning introduced him toweaving, and he loved to recount his travels in Guatemela, where helearned traditional methods on a back strap loom. He returned to workon the freighters as a navigator, and mentored the next union president,

but continued to serve in special liaison until he retired in 1993.He shared the last twenty years of his life with his wife Maggie, andenjoyed their years together in their home in Kaslo and in Mulege, BajaCalifornia Mexico.

He enjoyed music, wrote poetry and loved to play poker with all his won-derful friends at the Ainsworth Community Hall and at the Eagles Hallin Nelson. Visiting with both old and new friends, walking his little dogBodhi, gave him much joy to the very end of his life, and most of all, heloved to laugh.

Jack’s favourite expression was ‘Well, you can never have too much fun’.

North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society is seeking acoordinator for a weekly drop-in program for people wanting to improvetheir mental health. NKLCSS’s mission is to assist adults with a mental

illness to develop the skills and condence necessary to live satisfyingand productive lives in the community. Tis assistance is provided in apsychosocial program designed to empower and support its members.

Te condential drop-in program will provide a non-institutional settingwhere adults with a mental illness give each other support as they workto rebuild their condence, stamina and concentration, and socialinteractions. It is a voluntary program whose participants are members,not patients or clients, and work to create and direct the program.

Desired Qualications:• Demonstrated experience and skill in programs for people with a

mental illness.• Demonstrated ability to manage programs in a way that ensures

maximum consumer participation.

• A strengths based philosophy.• Highly developed written and verbal communication, interpersonal

and organizational skills.• Possess a current BC Driver’s licence.• An appropriate university degree will be an asset and a relevant

diploma is necessary.• Previous experience/knowledge of the Clubhouse model would be

an advantage.
