Cafe Langham Presents Some Summers in Hell With Bob Stair.

Th e second talk in the newly initiated speaker series, Th e Café Langham – Inspired Ideas, takes place on Th urs-day, July 10 at 7 pm. Bob Stair of Kaslo, ex-cop, ex-coroner and ex-war crimes/human rights investigator, will present experiences from his professional life, trying to resolve mysteries using a wide range of scientifi c techniques. Domestically, these include such things as the recovery, processing and identifi cation of human skeletal remains, clandestine forensic burials and the planning and execu-tion of the Robert William Picton (“Th e Pig Farm”) crime scene excavation. Internationally, it will look at the 9/11 World Trade Center ground zero excavations in New York City, as well as Human Rights investigations involving mass grave examinations in far fl ung places such as the Balkans and Sri Lanka in support of prosecution by Inter-national Criminal Tribunals. Note that this is a mature topic, and although not numerous, a few images will be shared, which some may fi nd disturbing.

Th e Langham has invited six Columbia Basin folks to give a talk each month from June to November; great people who have something to share with the community. Celebrating the Langham’s 40th Anniversary this year, these talks will inform, engage and entertain. And there is a fi ne line of baked goods too! Suggested donation at the door $10.

Mentorship Opportunities For Youth! Are you between the ages of 14 and 21? Do you live in

Now is the time to express your interest. If you would like to participate in any one or all of these mentorship oppor-tunities, contact Shannon Isaac at 250-353-7691 or email: [email protected] Deadline Monday, July 20, 4 pm.

Shokunin Master Classes In Crawford Bay

In Japanese, a shokunin is a master craft sman or artisan. More than that, the word implies an ethic of striving for excellence and a responsibility to benefi t one’s community. With that theme in mind, Selkirk College announces a new summer program beginning this summer at Crawford Bay School, featuring regional artists and craft speople. Pro-grams will be off ered in theatre, writing, music and the visual arts. Th e Shokunin Summer Program will specialize

in small intensive classes from July 22–25 held between 10 am and 2 pm.

For those interested in honing their writing skills, novel-ist Luanne Armstrong presents Th e Writer Th at You Are, helping you get in touch with your own writing process, fi nd your creativity, and match it with the craft of story making through writing. Poet, journalist and historian Sean Arthur Joyce, better known regionally as Art Joyce, off ers Exploring the Past in the Present. Learn why the past continues to be a force in the present and how to trans-form historical writing into lively, engaging prose using techniques of creative nonfi ction.

Artists of all skill levels will fi nd plenty to choose from in Shokunin Master Classes. Ted Wallace will off er Intui-tive Drawing, increasing students’ skills with a focus on the human fi gure and face. Ever wondered why artists fi nd self-portraits so fascinating? Zora Doval will feature Self Portrait: A Powerful Tool of Self-Discovery, using char-coals, pastels, acrylics and ink. Intentional Creativity with Danielle Tonossi is another opportunity to allow your cre-ative self to speak through colour and form. No previous painting experience is needed.

Musicians looking to take their skills to the next level won’t want to miss Th e Language of Music, presented by Greg Lostracco. Learn how to apply musical theory and harmonics, the rudiments of rhythm, basic singing, ear training, contemporary harmony, and applied theory. Computer music and composition is an option. Please contact the instructor so Greg can develop the course based on the interests of the students.

What is Energy Medicine?Eden Energy medicine is a powerful self-healing approach

and easy to learn. We learn to work with internal energies – the vital electromagnetic forces that relay messages within our body. Healing happens when we activate these energy fl ows and restore those that are weak or out of balance. Energy Medicine combines ancient wisdom from Eastern cultures with Western scientifi c methods. Modern research has proven that our bodies truly are “all energy”. Learning to treat the body with new understanding helps us become ef-fective self-healers. We can help others as well as “evolve our own bodies” for modern life! Exposure to new chemicals, technologies, and experiences requires bodily adaptation. Energy medicine helps us to deal with our changing environ-ment and stay healthy at the same time. You can become more lively, vital, and creative, and achieve joy and high-level wellness! Kaslo & AreaHEALTH MATTERS

Kaslo To Have Two Permanent Full-Time Physicians

Two permanent, full-time physicians have committed to Kaslo over the last two weeks, bringing the village to a full complement.

“This is fantastic news for residents of Kaslo and area,” Andrew Neuner, Interior Health’s vice-president of community integration, said in a news release.

“I’m proud of the work our Interior Health team and the Kaslo and Area D health care select committee, mayor and council and the community have done in successfully recruiting these new physicians. This was a challenging process at times, but in the end it was truly a team effort that made these recruitments possible.”

Interior Health pledged to fi nd new physi-cians for the community in March 2013, after two physicians announced they were leaving their positions, one to open a private clinic.

Dr. Isabelle-Anne Fontaine started her reg-ular schedule at Victorian Community Health Centre on June 16 and Dr. Ben Allen offi cially joins the Kaslo team on September 15. Both physicians have done a number of shifts at the health centre over the last few months prior to offi cially signing permanent contracts and Dr. Allen will be doing additional shifts in Kaslo over the summer. The new physicians will support primary health care and 9 am to 5 pm weekday emergency department services in the community.

“We’re very fortunate to have found two highly-skilled physicians with diverse and impressive backgrounds who will provide ex-cellent care to local residents,” said Dr. Curtis Bell, Interior Health’s community medical director. “Both physicians are a great fi t for the community and having two permanent physicians brings stability to our services for patients of the Kaslo area.”

Interior Health did not, however, indicate any plans to return to round-the-clock emergency room coverage, which was reduced to daytime weekday hours only as of April.

Dr. Fontaine came to BC from Quebec and has been a family physician since 2007. Over the past six years, she practiced at the Family Medicine Unit in Levis, Que., teaching and su-pervising medical residents in family medicine. She has experience with geriatric patients in long term care units and has a particular inter-est in palliative care. She was a pharmacist for fi ve years prior to becoming a physician.

Dr. Allen is originally from West Texas and received his medical training in Virginia. He is board certifi ed in family practice in both the United States and Canada and is the 1988 recipient of the Lloyd Damsey Medal for Family Practice. He has practiced both primary care and emergency medicine at clinics, health units and military bases throughout North America,

Asia and Africa. Prior to moving to BC, he founded and practiced at an urgent care clinic in Lethbridge. Most recently, he has supported primary and emergency care at various health centres around the province.

Both physicians have an interest in rural medicine and are coming to Kaslo for the professional and personal opportunities the community has to offer. Residents wanting to book a regular physician appointment can do so by calling 250-353-2291.

Several physicians have been supporting the community as the search for permanent place-ments continued, including Dr. Fen Smit and Dr. Annemarie de Koker, who have indicated they will continue to provide locum coverage.

Health Outreach Nurses Bring Screening, Support And

Education On Blood-Borne Infections To Remote Communities In Interior Health

Interior Health’s Health Outreach Nurses are a specialized group of mobile nurses who pro-vide screening, treatment and support services for blood-borne infections like HIV. The Health Outreach Nurses (HON) are dedicated to meeting clients where they are at by providing mobile health screening, connections to com-munity resources and support in navigating the healthcare systems. The nurses also educate communities about blood-borne infections in order to ensure clients are properly supported in their communities.

Recently Robin VanStolk, the HON for Kootenay Boundary, was in Kaslo doing education and testing for HIV. During his visit

he emphasized that testing and treatment for HIV has come a long way. “Early testing and treatment can make a huge difference. With new medications people can live long healthy lives. HIV is no longer considered a terminal illness. Transmission rates can decrease by up to 96% when on treatment. Early testing and treatment can also prevent the virus from being passed on from mother to child during pregnancy.”

Robin emphasized that it is important to know your HIV status. “If you do not know and you have the virus, it could be causing damage to your body which over time could lead to serious complications. On the other hand, if you fi nd out you are HIV positive, you can be treated by as little as one pill a day, live a completely healthy life and prevent spreading the virus to others.”

For further information and to learn where testing is available, please contact Robin at 250-505-7242 or Kaslo Public Health Nurse 250-353-2739.

Keep Safe While Biking And Boating This Summer

• Make sure all your equipment is in good working order, especially tires and brakes on bicycles and motorcycles.

• Whether you are motorcycling, biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading, always wear a legally approved helmet and other protective equipment, and ensure good fi t and proper use of gear.

• Make sure you bring enough water and easy-to-carry snacks that will provide plenty of energy and rehydration.

• When participating in an outdoor activity at dusk or after dark, wear lightly coloured, re-fl ective clothing so you are visible to others. If cycling, use front and rear lights on bikes.

• When going on trips or off-road, carry a GPS and signaling device as well as fi rst aid and emergency survival gear.

• Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

• When boating, always wear a lifejacket or PFD (personal fl otation device) and carry the required safety equipment in your boat.

• Get licensed – by law, all boaters need proof of operator competency.

• Get trained – training gives you knowledge to make smart choices when on the water.

• Keep an eye on the weather – patterns can change quickly and without warning.

• Avoid alcohol and drug-related injuries. Do not drive boats or vehicles or engage in recreational activities while under the infl uence of alcohol or drugs. Plan for a safe ride home before going out.

Tudor, was born in Winnipeg, Mani-toba to parents, Jack Randall and Edith Dulcibel Rutherglen. Two years later they moved to England when father Jack was sent with the Canadian army,-for WW1. Th ere his brother Conway was born. Th e family returned to Can-ada in 1920, settling in the Sunny Brae area of Shuswap Lake. Tudor, his moth-er Edith and brothers Conway, Ted, and Bill resettled in the Longbeach area of Kootenay lake in 1924, where he lived his life out. He and his brothers grew up hiking, fi shing, hunting and explor-ing the Kootenay Lake wilderness areas around them.

Life wasn’t easy for a single parent in those days, so the boys had lots of chores to do, picking fruit, cutting wood, and looking aft er animals. As a young boy Tudor, along with an old game warden, helped stock most of the mountain lakes in the area.

Th at meant hiking with a heavy can of water containing fi sh on his back into remote lakes. Tudor was always very physically active, and enjoyed hard work...from growing huge gardens in Longbeach, to hiking the high country, to fi shing in the streams and slashing out trails to get there. As anyone who knew him will attest, huckleberry pick-ing was a favourite pastime.

Tudor went to war in 1940 along with two of his brothers, and saw action in Normandy, France, Holland, and Bel-

gium. He represented his regiment, the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifl es, at the 60th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy.

Aft er the war he worked for the land registry offi ce and then the Department of Highways, where he ran the Nelson ferry until it was deactivated. He then went on to work the toll gates on the new Nelson bridge, and from there into construction as a carpenter until his re-tirement.

Music was a very big part of his life. He taught himself to play the accordion, and he and his brothers played together as a band on occasion. He also played with various dance bands throughout the years, and continued to play up to the time of his passing.

Tudor had a great passion for hock-ey. He played during the war while sta-tioned in England. In Canada he spentyears playing for teams in Nelson, andfi nished up his career in Kaslo playingfor the Kaslo Oldtimers. He played invarious tournaments throughout BCand in Spokane. Tudor was an integralpart of the Kaslo Oldtimers until anon-ice hockey injury ended his careerat the age of 78. Badminton was one ofhis other favourite retirement activitieswhich he continued into his 70s.

Tudor was predeceased by his young-er brothers Conway, Ted, and Bill, andhis little great-grandson Isaac. He issurvived by his children Robert (Lin-da) of Nelson, Elaine (Bob) of Mission,Dulcie (Dave) of Ymir, Anne (Mike)of Surrey; and sister-in-law PaulineRutherglen of Nelson. He also leavesbehind 5 grand daughters, 2 grandsons,3 great-granddaughters, 2 great-grand-sons, as well as many nieces and neph-ews throughout BC and various partsof the world.

A memorial service will be held July19, at 11am at the Balfour EvangelicalCovenant Church on upper Balfour Rd,Balfour.

All are welcome. In lieu of fl owers, the family would

ask that donations be made in mem-ory of Tudor Rutherglen to the KasloMinor Hockey Association, Box 1064,Kaslo BC V0G 1M0

Community Initiated Rural Revival Projects

Th is spring the Johnsons Landing Community Associ-ation gave their unanimous consent and support to Th e Rural Revival Project, a project started by three Area D community members who became inspired to act on some of the ideas brought up by NKLCS’s Project Comeback.

Last fall, as many will remember, Kaslo’s Project Come-back held a community meeting at JVH to address results from an earlier survey and ask for ideas on what was needed to help youth (aged 15-29) stay and thrive in this area. Alternative education, skill building, and mentoring were among the top desires, and in response the Rural Revival Project was born!

Rural Revival Projects cont’d from pg 42

With CBT funding from the Aff ected Areas Grant, the Rural Revival Project will be hosting a series of “reskill-ing” workshops, kicking off Saturday July 12, focused on teaching practical ways of strengthening self-reliance. Drawing from the vast knowledge of the area, this is an eff ort to pass on and revive some of the old ‘ways’ and skills that are rapidly being forgotten in an increasingly complex, inter-dependent and energy-hungry world.

To go along with the educational workshops, the Rural Revival project will also be lighting up Johnsons Landing with four ‘Celebrating Rural Living’ events throughout the season, funded by the CKCA. Th e idea is to celebrate the arts and culture of the area that go along with this rural low-impact lifestyle, while also bringing some love and energy back into the community of Johnsons Land-ing. All are welcome to attend both the workshops and events! Th ank you to all those who have supported this project so far.

Th e fi rst workshop is Alternative Energy with Bob Wat-ers on Saturday, July 12 at the Johnsons Landing Com-munity Hall. For more details and to view workshop topics and dates: www.theruralrevivalproject/wordpress.com or theruralrevivalproject/facebook.com
