Thursday, August 2, 2012 Carnival Day Success An exquisite Gold Coast winter’s day greeted us for our annual Carnival Day last Saturday. Starting at midday, thousands of people visited the college enjoying everything that was on offer! The rides, the market stalls, the variety of foods in the food lane and of course the fantastic student performances on stage. Having Carnival Day in the centre of the school worked incredibly well! Another fun part of the afternoon was the Oz Tag competition held on the sports oval with both past and present students competing. There were two teams of past students named The Olympians and The Juggernauts. After five rounds of games the final was between a Year 10 team named The Antics and a Year 12 team named Gotham PD. The Antics had a convincing win over Gotham PD in the final! All the fun and excitement came to a grand finale with a fireworks spectacular at dusk. Well done to all the parents, staff and students whose work over the last few weeks and months culminated in such a successful day and a special thanks to the P&F Carnival Committee for the coordination all of the activities. Last but certainly not least a HUGE thankyou to all who attended and supported, what has to be, our best Carnival Day yet!

An exquisite Gold Coast winter’s day greeted us for our annual Carnival Day last Saturday.

Noah’s Ark rang to the happy sounds of the Jesus And Me (J.A.M.) Show last week, a fun new show for 2 to 6 year olds featuring Dr Doolots and his puppet animal friends and action songs written especially for this age group.

Children sang and laughed their way through the interactive performance with the message of looking to Jesus as our daily guide.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or to the left. Isaiah 30:21

ConscienceGod has placed a conscience inside each person. The primary

function of the conscience is to point people to a personal knowledge of God. Romans 2:15 describes the conscience as an internal witness inside non-believers that acknowledges God’s existence.

The conscience has other functions as well. The conscience provides internal promptings to children to do what’s right, but many parents miss opportunities to strengthen these promptings. Instead, parents emphasize parental promptings. One of the ways to increase the strength of a child’s internal promptings is to send children on missions where they have to rely on internal promptings and then take initiative themselves.

Instead of saying, “Go clean up the Lego in the playroom,” you might say, “Please go look in the playroom and see if you can find anything out of place in there.” Teaching children to see what needs to be done is the first step toward motivating them to make changes on their own. You might also say, “Oops, honey, think for a minute,” as he/she is about to leave the table without helping to clean up. Or, “Would you please think of a way you can help in these frustrating few minutes before dinner?”

Raising the awareness often requires that parents allow children to fill in some of the blanks by seeing what needs to be done for themselves and then taking initiative to do it.

Strategy for the week: Encourage children to look for and find areas where they can help. Reward for helping that has been spontaneous on seeing the need. Use the above strategies to encourage children to become more independent in this area.

SecondaryCompassion

In a world where it seems that there is little compassion in today’s younger generation, it is very necessary for us to nurture compassion in our young people for the benefit of future generations and society in general. It is very frightening when we see on the news or read about people who have hurt others or committed a crime and have shown no remorse and cannot empathise with the victim and the family involved. Having compassion and empathy is part of the very fabric of a positive and caring society.

Here are just some ideas we may choose to use to nurture compassion and empathy in our children –

• NOTICEtheneedsandhurtsofthosearoundyou.

• NEVERbelittle,ridicule,orjokeaboutsomeoneelse’s circumstances.

• IMAGINEwithyourchildrenwhatitwouldbeliketobe handicapped.

• PRAYasafamilyforthedifficultiesofothers.

• VISITfriendsandrelativesinthehospital.

• SHAREbooksandarticlesaboutpeople’schallenges.

• TALKabouthowtragedieshaveimpactedthoseyou know.

• ASKyourchildrenhowtheywouldfeelifhardthings happened to them.

• HELPtheelderlyinyourneighbourhoodand/orchurch.

• DISCUSStheissuesofbeinghomeless.

• BUYgiftsforaneedyfamilyforChristmas.

• GOonamissiontrip.

This is not an exhaustive list – maybe some of these you would consider doing and no doubt you may have other ideas that you are already employing to nurture compassion in your children. Ultimately being compassionate begins at home when we learn to show compassion towards siblings and other family members – even our pets.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in myprayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. KnowwhoyouareinChrist.Nurturecompassion.

GeneralMultiply Your TalentQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. Matthew 25:29

In the parable of the talents, each person was given talents according to his ability, but all had the potential to multiply their talent.

If I were in the business of selling vacuum cleaners and one of my salesmen sold five machines in one day and another took his demonstration model and left it in the boot of his car (to keep it safe), then without a doubt I would take the latter machine from the lazy rep and give it to the one who made a profit. That is just common sense! Likewise, if God has given you a talent, use it for His glory - don’t bury it. As you use it, there will be an increase and that increase pleases God. Well done, good and faithful servant! God has given you talents and abilities for a purpose which includes not only you and your family, but others as well. Your talent may be singing / letter writing / hospital visitation / exhorting / serving, but whatever talent God has given you, dedicate it to Him, use it and allow it to be multiplied.

Let your fruit be evident to all around you and allow it to increase.

Now is the time to get to training sessions for those last minute technique pointers from our professional coaches. I know that our coaches, James and Andrew, are keen to teach the high school students how to use the starting blocks, hurdles and fine tune techniques for in the field events. The following training sessions are available to our high school students before the APS carnival:• Tuesdays7/8&14/8 7-8am• Thursday9/8 7-8am• Monday13/8 3:20-4:30pm

Just remember that you get treated to a free lunch at Robina Town Centre if your team wins age group champion at APS…now surely that’s worth training for.

Track TalkWell another week has passed and again, plenty has been

happening athletics wise.

Last Thursday our secondary students took part in Day 2 of their athletics carnival. This was held up at the tartan track at GriffithUniversity. Itwasabigandeventfulday, and Ienjoyedwatching our older students in action. As was the case with Day 1 of the carnival, I witnessed a large amount of talented kids, who are raw in their ability, as they have never trained specifically in any athletics disciplines. I did my best to walk around and meet and help as many students as I could, and I hope now with APS is not far away, that students will make their way down to the numerous training sessions that are available at school. If you are keen to train, but cannot make these school sessions, then please get in touch with me, and something can be arranged outside of school hours. My details are as follows if you are seeking outside training.

On Sunday,TrishelleGrady and I travelled up to Brisbane tothe University of Queensland with a small team of our primary students to compete in the UQ Junior All-comers Athletics meet. This was a great opportunity for the students who have been regularly training within the KATS program to apply alltheir aquired skills and fitness in a competition setting. For the majority of the students who travelled to this meet, this was their first competition since their school carnival, so it gave Trishelle

and I an indication on how our students are progressing. Our students did great, particularly in the sprint and throwing events. For anyone interested in the results from this meet, here is the link http://www.uqsport.com.au/athletics-meets-results

The team looked the part warming up as a group in centre field with their school competition outfits. Most of the participants at thismeetwerebased in either Brisbane, SunshineCoast, orToowoomba areas, and had never seen or even heard of our school. But now they know that there is a school on theGoldCoast that has a very healthy athletics program, so word will begin to spread as time goes by......we can only become bigger and better, and attract more and more talented athletics stars to our already strong team!!!

Finally, on Monday we had the Gold Coast South District Championship Day. Our school had a whopping 24 students competing, which I’d say would’ve been the most students from any school. And just like last time they tasted success, they did so againonthisday.Wehad19studentsqualifyfortheregionals.....that’s80%ofourteamprogressingtothenextlevel!!!Ihavebeeninformed that this is a record number of students for our school. I am so very proud of our team, both students and staff. I’m absolutely certain that the other APS schools are well and truly freaking out about coming up against us at the APS carnival next month......andSOTHEYSHOULDBE!!!!
