Shaping serving heartsIn spite of some inclement weather Noah’s Ark children

fully participated in the ‘beach day’ last week, raising money for our sister school in the Philippines. Rashies and board shorts were the order of the day, along with sunscreen and water play!

We can begin to shape serving hearts in our children as we help them understand the needs of others.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: Honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 5:16

What’s Honour?Honour means treating people as special, doing more than

what’s expected and having a good attitude while doing it.Children need to know what Godly character looks like in

practical terms. We love the character quality of honour, not just because God commands it, but also because it has so much rich meaning for parents and children. It can give direction in many of the frustrating moments we experience in family life. In fact, every form of selfishness has an honour-based solution.

Use our honour definition or make up your own. The point is that, honour changes people. It changes the way parents relate to their children, the way children relate to each other and the way children relate to their parents. We all need it. You can use the concept of honour in correction or when things are going well. You can use it when you teach your children about money, time and other resources. You can also teach it when conflict comes around. One fun way to teach it is on special occasions when someone wins a contest or earns a certificate. You may show honour by giving that person a fancy place at the table or by decorating his or her bedroom door just like you would on a birthday.

Honour is fun. It’s like oil in a machine. It gets work done with less friction and less heat. Every family needs honour. It’s great when things are going well and essential when family relationships are strained. You can work on honour whether your kids are preschoolers or teens. It will change the way your family relates to each other. Isn’t that what we want?

Strategy for the week: The best place to start in developing honour in children is to develop in them a respect for authority. Encouraging them to see that they must show honour and respect for parents, teachers and those in authority over them will help them to begin showing honour to others. Correct them and give suitable consequences when you see or hear of them disrespecting others, but especially you. Praise well when you see them showing honour to someone.

SecondaryEncouraging Others & Serving Others

In staff devotions recently we have been challenged to encour-age others and to serve others just as Jesus came to serve. I have included a story and some ideas of how this can be done.

A CUSTOMER’S GIFT

I recently returned to work after taking time off to recover from an operation on my elbow.

On my first day back, I was the cashier in the basket-only line, as I was unable to assist with packing goods into bags due to my elbow.

However, it got busy and a lady came to my line with a full cart. I didn’t complain, and gave her some bags so that she could pack her goods. Towards the end of the sale, the lady suddenly explod-ed, shouting at me for not helping with her packing and calling the manager over to complain about me.

My manager started to help with the packing, and she ex-plained that it was my first day back after being in hospital. But the woman continued to shout that it was no excuse.

Once she had gone, I tried to continue serving. But I was so shaken that I burst into tears during the next customer. My man-ager took over and sent me for a cup of tea.

Afterwards, when I returned to the shop floor, I found that the next customer in the queue had made a point of telling the man-ager I had done nothing wrong. He then had gone out and come back with a huge bunch of flowers to cheer me up!

It went from the worst moment at work to the nicest, and I completed the rest of my shift with a massive smile on my face. :)

WORLD KINDNESS WEEK

Please join in celebrating World Kindness Week this year from Nov. 13 - 20th! This year, for World Kindness Week, folks are being asked to participate in the Kindness Challenge - doing one ran-dom act of kindness every day this week!

If you are looking around for ideas, you don’t have to look too far! Below are some favourite kindness ideas for you to share with your friends in celebration of World Kindness Week!  Enjoy the Kindness Challenge and thank you for helping to spread the ripples of kindness and inspiration to the farthest corners of the universe.

Kindness Ideas:

1. Write notes of inspiration and kindness on small pieces of paper and stick them in random books in the library for someone to find.  2.   Leave thank you cards and notes of encouragement in your neighbours’ mailboxes 3.   Offer to wash your friend’s car, babysit their kids, or take their dog for a walk  4.   Cook dinner for a friend or family and drop it off at their house 5.   Hold the door open for your co-workers  6. Give a note of appreciation to your friends at school, co-workers, or your family  7.   Leave flowers on the doorstep of someone you don’t know and run!  8.   Give a random person an inspirational book with a note in it 9.   Anonymously pay for someone’s meal at a restaurant 10.  Go to the nearest park or public place and clear up as much trash as you can.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. Know who you are in Christ. Nurture compassion. Have a chuckle. Attitudes are habits. Courage. Recognise your heroes. A disciplined tongue. No strings attached. The Difference - Value. Random Acts of Kindness.

Presentation Night Years P-2

The Celebration of P-2 Awards Night 2012 is a reflection of all the achievements and successes, both personally and academically accomplished through the year. It was a delight to view all the children in Prep to Year 2 performing their items on Monday night. Prep students were choreographed to ‘You Rock My World’, Year 1 performed a touching tribute to the meaning of Christmas in ‘Born That We May Live’ and Year Two heralded in the joy of Christmas with the well-known song, ‘Jingle Bell Rock.’ Mrs Hicks’ Prep cheerleaders performed to the music of ‘Sesame Street’, and Miss Miller’s Year 1 dancers displayed their expertise in ‘Light Up the World’ and the Year 2 dancers presented ‘The Show.’ Each of the year level presentations were well attended by parents, grandparents and friends. The staff are to be commended for their amazing talents and giftings in rehearsing the students and contributing creative ideas towards the performance of their year level item. The successes are also attributed to the support, encouragement and prayers received from parents and carers this year.

High School APS Summer Season Finals

On Friday, the high school played in the finals of the APS summer sports. King’s had 14 teams vying for a premiership and I can proudly say that of those 14 matches, we won 9 of them. That is an outstanding strike rate. Funnily enough we had four girl teams, four boy teams and a mixed team who won so all is even on the gender front :)

TRACK TALK

After many months training together, our KATS program has finally come to a conclusion. The turnout to training on Monday was again a solid number of students which was pleasing. As promised, I got out the high jump bags. Our Year 2 and 3 students where first given a few development drills to develop tall and ac-tive running mechanics required to be a successful high jumper, as well as some take off drills to develop explosive vertical take-off, and then finally, a quick scissor jump competition to blend all together. The KATS athletes that have been in the program from the beginning came to me for the second half of the session where I gave them a taste of some Frosbury flop technique work. For the vast majority of these students it was the very first time they had ever attempted this advanced high jump technique. Al-though our school took out the Gold Coast South Primary Athlet-ics Trophy this year, the one field event where our school lacked placings was the high jump. This is not in my opinion because we lack quality high jumpers, but the fact that almost none of our students knew how to, or were not proficient for that matter at the Frosbury technique. When you are a student doing scis-sor jump against an athlete who is proficient at the Frosbury, you have very little chance of beating them, and many students from other schools used this technique. So it is my goal for next year to begin work on the Frosbury flop as early as possible next year so that we are strong in this event. It was also an event our school performed terribly at the APS in, and we REALLY want to win that title ASAP. I’m also considering doing ‘outside of school’ sessions for this event, so if anyone is interested, then please contact me, I’d be happy to help.

Our running club session this week was fantastic!! After our warm up routine (which includes joint mobilization, dynamic flexibility, single- leg balance/proprioception exercises, and run-ning technique drills), our students went out onto the oval to do a 1km time trial. Our group did this run on our oval in this session two weeks ago, and in that short space of time, almost every single student had major improvements in their time. In fact, a couple of our Year 2 and 3 students reported close to a 2 mins improvement!!! Now I am certainly not going to claim that I have improved their fitness by that margin in this short space of time, but it correlates with what I said in my article last week. Youngsters are very much put off by running a long distance, and cannot properly gauge how to pace themselves, and for that fact they either sprint too hard too early and rapidly fatigue, or on the other hand, you have those students who just are too scared or cautious to push themselves when they feel the effects of fa-tigue. So what we have successfully done here is improved their confidence in their own ability, and made them aware that fa-tigue is not fatal.

Lastly, this might interest some of our multi-talented second-ary students out there. On Friday 23 - Saturday 24 November, there is a competition, the QLD All-Schools Combined Events Championships, being held at the Griffith University Athletics Track. This is an event that, over the course of two days, students will compete in a number of different track and field events, where you gain points for your performances in each event, and at the conclusion of the second day (Saturday), the final placings will be announced. This is similar to a decathlon, but just not as many events. Please note, that this is a state championship, and you have an opportunity to just nominate through the school. No lead up comps are required to qualify. So if you have ever had the ambition to represent King’s at a state level, then here is your chance. From my knowledge, in previous years, the participation numbers have been low, so you never know, you may be able to snag a top 10, 5, or even a top 3 placing!! All you have to do is nominate. I will be attending this event, so if anyone is worried about being alone, or not knowing how to warm up, don’t be. There are three age-groups available for this event:• U14(Year8students)• U16(Year9&10students)• U18(Year11&12students)

I would high recommend those students who enjoy compet-ing across a number of different events, and are looking for a new type of experience in their school athletics experience, to give this competition a try. I will also offer some last minute training in events such as hurdles, throws, and jumps events for students who want to brush up on their technique before competing.

Yours in Sport,

~ James Clark, King’s Head Athletics & Cross Country Coach

Be A BlessingQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18

Three facets that stand out in the ministry of Jesus are:

• He loved people

• He met people’s needs

• He was the greatest communicator that ever lived!

Jesus was always relevant to the people He was addressing. He made his message understandable and applicable to all.

As a people of God we need to:

• Love people

• Meet people’s needs

• Communicate effectively

All through the power of the Holy Spirit.

You are not on this earth simply to be blessed, you have a destiny to be a blessing! Reach out to others with God’s love.
