A day in the life of Koalas

It’s all in a day’s work and play for Koalas as they enjoy their learning in a challenging, stimulating environment.

Language and social skills are built as they interact with puppets, build tall towers using mathematical language to describe their achievements and role play as mothers with babies to tend to.

Parenting with Power

It’s Just Not Complete Without...

Scripture of the week: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Discipline has some similarities to working on a craft. How many times have you started a project but left it un-finished? You could spend a lot of time painting a picture or doing some needlework but you won’t be able to fully enjoy it until it is framed and hung on a wall.

Discipline needs to be framed, finished off, and complet-ed with a positive conclusion. It’s not enough to just give a consequence and think you’re done. Some parents feel like they’ve fulfilled their responsibility or done their duty by simply sending children to their rooms or taking away a privilege. Unfortunately, there is often tension left in the relationship, the child may walk away angry, children may feel guilty, or true repentance may not have taken place. This leaves room for anger or even bitterness to linger. The child may plan revenge. “I’ll show you. I just won’t talk to you. You’ll be sorry then.” Day after day, year after year, these tensions grow into layers and layers of walls between you and your child.

A positive conclusion, however, is a discussion you have with your child after the consequence has been given. It helps children understand what they did wrong, why it was wrong and what they can do differently next time. The positive conclusion is a reaffirmation of the relationship and a confidence that the child can do better. The positive conclusion is so important you should use it to end every discipline situation. God had a positive conclusion with Adam and Eve. He gave the consequence, sending them out of the garden, but he then made clothes for them and gave them a hopeful promise of the future. We can do the same thing for our children by giving them a hope and a plan for the next time they are in the same situation that caused the problem.

Strategy for the week: True discipline comes with re-pentance and reconciliation. In every situation that requires a consequence make the effort to resolve it by having the dis-cussion about repentance, what happened and why, along with what the behaviour should be next time.

SecondaryStress Busters

Those of you who regularly read my ar-ticles will know that I am a dog person as opposed to a cat person. A dog is a won-derful companion – always happy when you come home, ready for a play, ready to please and lots of fun. I believe they are great for relieving stress at the end of a busy day. Dogs are great!!

Four-Legged Comedians Here is a riddle for you. What is black, white and brown, has

eight legs, and can do 60 miles an hour down a carpeted hallway? Do you give up? The answer is two puppies playing together. Yes, we have a new puppy in the house named Lemmy. He came about when I mistakenly assumed that our male Saint Bernard was way too big to ever get our little female mixed-breed preg-nant. Now at two months old Lemmy is living proof I was wrong. He is already as big as our six month old beagle pup Snoopy, and I am sure he will one day be as big as his dad too.

Watching Lemmy and Snoopy charging down the hall always brings a smile to my face. They chase, pant, and chew on each other. They bounce, roll, and run. They go faster and faster until their legs tangle and they end up in a pile of fur at the foot of the couch. I delight so much in the joy they bring. They remind me that the greatest happiness comes from a playful spirit and a loving heart. They remind me too that fur-filled carpets and teeth marked shoes are a small price to pay for a laughing soul.

The theologian Karl Barth once said that “Laughter is the clos-est thing to the grace of God.” I thank God then for giving me so many four-legged comedians to grace my life. My house may be small and crowded but I always have a lot of furry heads to pet on. My furniture may be worn and fur covered but I can get a warm snuggle or slurp on the chin whenever I need one. My home may not be the neatest place but it is full of playful puppies and lots of laughter.

I think God knew what He was doing when He brought dogs into the lives of people. Dogs help us to see that life is meant for joy. They help us to see that play can be just as important as work. They help us to see that happiness comes from within. And they help us to see that love and laughter are the greatest gifts of all. May you share them always with dogs and people alike.

~ Joseph J. Mazzella ~

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remem-ber God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks.

~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

GeneralOur Musicians celebrate the Diamond Jubilee

As part of our service to the community, the Music Department held a concert for the residents at Galleon Gardens Retirement Village, Currumbin Waters.

Our students joined in the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee over morning tea with the residents, who were enter-tained by the high school band and the upper primary choir.

To the obvious delight of the crowd, the high school band played several pieces during the concert. We also had items from a saxophone ensemble, flute trio and brass ensemble. Some solo items were performed by Caitlin Schmidt 6J and Iris Cambel 4M.

The upper primary choir delighted the audience with three items, but really got them tapping their feet along to Supercali-fragilisticexpialidocious.

Our thanks go the all of our student performers, who were ex-cellent ambassadors for our college in the community.

Glory to God!Quote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16In one of our services, a child was brought for prayer. It looked

to me as though the little girl was asleep whereas, in fact, the parents had taken her out of the hospital prior to a scheduled operation and she was semi-conscious. As I prayed for her there was no visible change and the family returned to Pretoria that evening. As they were driving home they continued to praise God, in faith, for their child’s healing. Half-way home the little girl woke up, totally healed.

We are not looking at outward appearance but at God. A friend of ours had been very ill for several months and had reached the stage where she was barely able to stand because of the pain in her back. She had sought the help of physicians and paid a for-tune in medical bills! But one night God reminded her, through her son, that He was the Lord who heals, and He changes not. There and then she determined to come to the evening service convinced that when she was prayed for, her healing would man-ifest. Her husband doubted her ability to be able to sit through a service as he was sure the pain would be too great. Without wavering she found somebody to help her dress and bring her to church. Needless to say, God honours those who reach out to Him in faith; she was healed and set free from the months of pain. Glory to God!

King’s Kats & KubsKing’s Cheerleading teams,

Kats and Kubs, had the won-derful opportunity to perform at the Titans vs Cowboys game last Friday night. It was an ex-citing experience for the girls, performing cheers on the concourse and performing a routine on the field before kick off. Their big, bright, silver pom poms looked fantastic. Thanks to the parents, friends and teachers that came to support them. An amazing experience to remember.

Rugby Report

Year 4 Rugby Team are Champions of the APS!!Last Thursday our primary school rugby teams competed in

the annual APS cup held at All Saints Anglican School. There was lots of talent on display coming through from the lower grades with all King’s teams extremely competitive playing some good hard rugby!

The Year 7 boys played in an extremely tough pool coming up against Trinity, All Saints and Emmanuel, where they managed to come out with a win, a loss and a draw and finished the tourna-ment in fifth place out of the eight competing schools.

The Year 6 team were probably the hardest done by, undefeat-ed all day in the pool stages they ended up on level points with All Saints and Somerset. Officials had to do a count back to sepa-rate the three teams and in the end it was King’s who narrowly missed out on a semi-final place because of tries conceded, as all three teams could not even be separated on tries scored.

The Year 5 competition saw King’s undefeated winning all pool games against All Saints, Somerset and A B Paterson. The long day took its toll on the boys as they went down narrowly to Em-manuel in the semi-finals and eventually finished 4th overall.

News from the King’s Locker Room WEEK 8

The Year 4 boys have a very strong team and totally dominat-ed their competition going undefeated all day and winning the tournament! On the way to the final King’s saw off Somerset, All Saints, and Coomera Anglican College to beat St. Stephens 9 - 0 in the final and be crowned APS Rugby Champions!

I would like to thank all of the coaches for the hard work they have been putting in with our boys and the passion they have for developing rugby at King’s. We have some talented players coming through the primary school and as a coaching staff we are passionate about developing these boys and seeing them achieve in rugby.

Next Thursday 14 June King’s will be holding our very first rugby function; this will be our end of season presentation and official launch of “The King’s Rugby Club” which is the parents and friends supporter group of rugby at King’s. All rugby players from Years 4 – 12 and their families, are invited to the evening to celebrate our achievements, meet as a college rugby commu-nity and to hear about the exciting developments in taking the King’s Rugby programme forward. Please RSVP to [email protected]

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!

Regional Cross Country ReportIt was as cold as a winter’s morning in northern Alaska at Runa-

way Bay yesterday but that didn’t cool down the hot form of our top runners at King’s!

King’s were well represented with 11 runners across Years 4-12 competing for the third time in a month against the best of the best on the Gold Coast. Each new event they go in, the compe-tition gets harder and harder, but the most pleasing sign is it’s our students who are setting the bench mark for everyone else to catch! Overall, we have 7 students heading off to the state cham-pionships!!! What a wonderful achievement.

Race of the day was the 11 year girls, where Leah Simpson and Tiffany Chavez (King’s students) blitzed the field and were neck and neck as they sprinted to the finish line with third place no where to be seen. Another cracking performance was from Dim-itee Coventry who won the 13 year girls with a great race from start to finish. It is looking like she has a good chance at making the national team this year. A special mention must also be given to Jasmyne Coventry and Tiarna Bembrick who were are young-est representatives and who were competing at this level for the first time in cross country!

The overall results were:

Jasmyne Coventry - 3rd in 10 year old girls

Tiarna Bembrick - 28th in 10 year old girls

Leah Simpson -1st in 11 year old girls

Tiffany Chavez - 2nd in 11 year old girls

Layla Oxborrow - 15th in 12 year old girls

Dimitee Coventry - 1st in 13 year old girls

Erika Chavez - 6th in 13 year old girls

Joel Lonsdale - 2nd in 13 year old boys

Brandon Shiel-Butera - 20th in 13 year old boys

Bernard Lierse - 6th in 17 year old boys

Emily Carey - 10th in 17 year old girls

Dimitee (on the left) receiving her 1st place medal

A big congratulations to our runners for the great results! We are looking forward to hearing from yet another carnival in a few weeks time where they race against the best in Queensland!
