Scripture of the week: “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the inter-ests of others.” ~ Philippians 2:4

Teaching your children servanthoodA good way to explain to older children what servant-

hood actually means is “seeking to overcome selfishness by looking for ways to help and care for others.” For younger children you might say, servanthood is “looking for ways to make other people happy before me.”

In the Bible, Paul teaches us to not be selfish but to continually look out for ways to be a servant to others. This is a difficult concept for most children as all of us are born with a sinful and selfish nature. Teaching your children how to be servants can take many years. It is a character trait that needs to be taught regularly and sometimes, with infinite patience.

Plan ways that each person in your family can prac-tise being a servant, rather than telling your children how and when to serve. As a parent, you are already serving your children in more ways than they probably appreciate. In fact, you might ask your child to serve by taking on one of the tasks you usually do in family life. This gives opportunity for you to model appreciation for service.

An older child might plan and prepare a meal for the family for example. That is more complicated than many children realise. The work required to think of others may be just what some children need to get out of their own selfish patterns. Of course, those being served often respond with delight and appreciation, which is the built in reward for servanthood. This kind of role reversal can go a long way to teach children to value others and ap-preciate the things people do for them.

Strategy for the week: Roleplay and rolemodel acts of servanthood to your children. Have fun together while you teach them how to cook a meal and serve it, buy an icy pole for another child, share toys, help mum cook biscuits, set the table, sweep the floors, give money at church or wash the car. Most importantly, be patient and enjoy the process of your children learning to be just like Jesus.

All Hands on Deck!Based on children’s interests, our after school care

group busily built boats last week and then had boat races to test their workmanship. The students worked together in groups to discuss, design and race their boats. There were many creative designs and inter-esting names. They are excited about making paper aeroplanes next time.

A ChallengeOh my goodness – this is tough. Questions to Ask Yourself Daily Now HERE’S a CHALLENGE!!!

Each member of John Wesley’s Holy Club asked himself these twenty-two questions every day during his private de-votions. Are YOU up for it??

I. Am I honest in all my acts and words, or do I exaggerate? II. Am I consciously or subconsciously creating the impression that I am better than I really am? In other words, am I a hypocrite? III. Do I confidently pass on to another what I was told in confidence? IV. Can I be trusted? V. Am I a slave to dress, friends, work, or habits? VI. Am I self-conscious, self-pitying, or self-justifying? VII. Did the Bible live in me today? VIII. Do I give it time to speak to me every day? IX. Am I enjoying prayer? X. When did I last speak to someone else of my faith? XI. Do I pray about the money I spend? XII. Do I get to bed on time and get up on time? XIII. Do I disobey God in anything? XIV. Do I insist upon doing something about which my conscience is uneasy? XV. Am I defeated in any part of my life? XVI. Am I jealous, impure, critical, irritable, touchy, or distrustful? XVII. How do I spend my spare time? XVIII. Am I proud? XIX. Do I thank God that I am not as other people, especially as the Pharisees who despised the publican? XX. Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticize, hold a resentment toward or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it? XXI. Do I grumble or complain constantly? XXII. Is Christ real to me?

PerfectionQuote from Power New Testament

We can never make ourselves completely perfect on our own. But we are made perfect through Jesus Christ. When you have faith in Christ you are complete. “By His one sacri-fice He has forever set free from sin the people He brings to God.” Hebrews 10:14

Queensland State Rowing Championships

Emily Carey (pictured below right) recently competed in the Queensland Schools State Champion-ships held at Rockhampton on the Fitzroy River. She is the New Queensland Under 17 State Champion in the Single Scull. She won a total of four Gold and two Silver Medals at the Rowing Championships. Emily won Gold in the Under 17 single, Year Eleven Coxed Quad and Year Eleven Coxed Four plus the Regional Quad Championship for Queensland. Emily also won Silver in the Year Eleven Double and only missed Gold by less than a second in the Open Double Scull.

Thanks to Emily’s efforts King’s Christian College came equal fifth out of 37 Queensland schools that competed. Well done, Emily. She is a great ambassador for King’s and she continues to achieve outstanding results.

PrimarySuccess at Public Speaking Competition

Last Tuesday, 25th October our College had six Primary students compete in the Public Speaking Finals at AB Pater-son College. The students were Annabelle Clark 5H, Elijah Winnington 6H, Jonathan Robertson 6F, Will Battese 7G, Aaron Glogoski 7B and Brandon Shiel-Butera 7S.

All six spoke exceptionally well in the Preliminary Finals. The standard that our students have reached is quite out-standing and is a credit to the students, parents and teach-ers who have worked together in partnership to see this happen.

From these finals, Elijah and Jonathan both went through to the Year 6 Grand Final. This group was of the highest standard and to his credit, Elijah Winnington came second. This is the first major award in Public Speaking for our Pri-mary Department and with the quality shown by many stu-dents across the Years 4 to 7 this year, it most certainly will be followed by others.

Congratulations Elijah on your achievement! ~ Barrie Nicholson, Deputy Head of Primary
