    EXPERIENCE

  • hotel + med. center extended stay medical center; las americas virtual design studio

fort lauderdale, fl fall 2011; second year graduate studio

    Revit, AutoCAD, Vasari, Photoshop

  • This extended stay medical facility desired to capitalize on the strict program requirements, city codes, aesthetic nature of the place, and sustainable features. A central, elevated street is exposed to the Floridian air to allow ample light and ventilation through the building. Angled room alignment and curved balconies allowed for shading and maximized views of the ocean and intercoastal waterway.

  • explore transformable facade

fall 2010; first year graduate comprehensive studioRevit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator

  • explore:

    1. verb. to traverse or range over for the purpose of discovery 2. verb. to look into closeley; scrutinize; examine 3. verb. to investigate into 4. verb. to engage in exploration

MULTIPLICITY: User-operable and -transformable facade. The double facade creates a path: the goal is not simply to enter the building, but to explore the intricacies and freely choose your own path. MOVING: The facades manueverability allows for exploration and a constantly changing envelope. -sliding -extending -hinging

    KAREN MILLER ARCH 501

    COGGESHALL TRANSFORMATIVE SURFACE

CLOSED- Moir effect stimulates intrigue and desire to scrutinize

OPEN- Users choice to create a unique, exploratory experience

The goal was to create a movable facade system to exemplify a word (explore). A double facade creates a path that users are free to interact with as they explore their own path around or into the building. Panels slide, hinge, extend, and retract to create a dynamic facade that has ever-changing shadows.

  • bracken library addition cafe + reading room addition

muncie, in fall 2010; first year graduate comprehensive studio

    Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator

  • Building off the explore facade, this addition to the Ball State University Library features a cafe, reading rooms, and individual reading nooks along a path. Users are encouraged to go explore the different levels of reading rooms via stairs or ramps and to find their preferred type of space. The perforated metal facade shades the harsh daylight yet allows in some natural light.

  • vertical city cap+trade; mixed use tower

san francisco, ca fall 2010; first year graduate comprehensive studio

Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustratorpartner project with Michelle Armand

  • An intensive program was combined into a vertical city to provide residents, hotel guests, office workers, and researchers with amenities within one structure. Sustainable tactics implemented tidal energy, solar power, a ventilated double facade, and fog harvesting. An offset U-shaped plan allows for privacy for the residents. The structure is stacked box trusses for each three stories, that are suspended from each other.

  • piazza celimontana covered market; piazza; underground parking garage; apartments

rome, italy summer 2011; independent study graduate comprehensive studio

    Revit, AutoCAD, Photoshop

  • This project created a covered market, piazza, and apartments in a desolate plot of land. The market embraces the corner close to the Colosseum to invite visitors to interact with locals. The market is pushed down into the ground, with an accessible green roof from the piazza. Levels of privacy and more ownership of green space increase as residents go into their unit: some units have exterior circulation, while others are two stories to allow for balconies and interior porches.

  • bachelor hall court university courtyard infill

oxford, ohspring 2010; fourth year capstone studio

    AutoCAD, FormZ, Photoshop, Hand Rendering

  • I revitalized a desolate university courtyard to make it usable space. Based on gallerias and Norman Fosters structural systems, my structure elegantly supports the fritted glass roof so the new enclosure does not bear on the existing building. Walkways allow for circulation in the academic building, breakout rooms can be classrooms or study space, and a raised stage allows for poetry readings for English majors.

  • -glass panels-purlins connecting glass panel to steel building structure-steel truss in compression-cables in tension connecting the columns-supporting I-beam-column capital-column (hollow for rain capture)-reinforced decking-supporting I-beam-column capital-column base (transfers into underground pylons)

  • wiikiaami roominterior cultural space

oxford, ohspring 2009; third year studio

    AutoCAD, FormZ, Photoshop

  • The studio sought out to create a cultural space in the new studentcenter reminiscent of the traditional dwelling of the Miami Tribe. After all students proposed rooms, tribal members and University Architects chose to pursue my design and asked me to incorporate elements of my classmates designs. I adapted culturally significant elements, natural materials, and symbologies with modern technologies.

  • piazza brunelleschi addition to historical building & piazza renovation

florence, italyfall 2008; third year studio

    AutoCAD, FormZ, Photoshop

  • My design revitalized the formerly dark entrance corridor to a university library. An inlaid, overriding glass box creates an indoor piazza. The glass box is interrupted by three main program spaces that open to the exterior, terraced piazza. Inside the box there are overlapping floating boxes suspended from trusses that act as reading rooms and breakout spaces.
