Las Fiestas de la Vendimia tomarán la ciudad de Jerez del 1 al 20 de septiembre, fechas en las que como es tradicional, esta ciudad rinde homenaje a una de sus más importantes señas de identidad en un evento Declarado de Interés Turístico Interna-cional . Este ciclo festivo nos permite reivindicar una parte muy importante de nuestra historia, sobre la cual este Gobierno de-sea potenciar una industria turística potente que apueste por la innovación, por la calidad y por dar los mejores servicios . Y lo ha-remos conmemorando el 80º aniversario del primer Reglamento de la Denominación de Origen Jerez-Xérès-Sherry y de su Con-sejo Regulador, grandes garantes de la difusión y promoción de nuestra riqueza vitivinícola .

Como alcaldesa de Jerez, deseo reiterar mi compromiso con el desarrollo económico de una ciudad que tiene en su cultura y en sus tradiciones un potencial que tenemos la obligación de rentabilizar. Y en esa línea de trabajo, también el flamenco está destinado a ocupar un protagonismo fundamental, a través del cual articular paquetes turísticos de primera categoría que nos permitan conquistar al visitante y consolidarlo .

Con estas premisas, este Gobierno está trabajando ya para ex-portar productos genuinos y de calidad, y para ofrecer en cada época del año un producto diferente que invite a volver a Jerez a disfrutar de propuestas diferentes en cada temporada .

El objetivo es rentabilizar el gran potencial de una ciudad que tiene atractivos únicos, y que en el mes de septiembre, tienen el sabor de nuestros mejores caldos . Con ese deseo, presentamos un programa festivo con el que iniciamos un camino que quere-mos recorrer de la mano con los jerezanos, con peñas, asocia-ciones, colectivos, para consolidar unas fiestas de septiembre acorde al proyecto turístico que estamos impulsando

Jerez evoca en septiembre la recogida de la uva en unas Fiestas de la Vendimia que este año se prolongan del 1 al 20 de septiembre y ofrecen un completo programa de activi-dades con el vino como protagonista, y espe-cialmente, con el 80 aniversario del Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Je-rez-Xérès-Sherry como efeméride clave del ciclo festivo . Una gran exposición ubicada en Los Claustros de Santo Domingo, organizada por el Consejo Regulador y el Ayuntamiento, nos ilustrará sobre la primera denominación de origen creada en nuestro país y referente para las siguientes .

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia, declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional, apuestan

este año por atraer al público más joven con el adelanto de la segunda edición del Fes-tival "Vente pa´Jerez 2015", un encuentro garrapatero que tendrá lugar en el Patio de San Fernando de El Alcázar el viernes 11 de septiembre . Más música, esta vez los sones del primer Certamen Nacional de Piano, que promueve la formación musical desde las edades más tempranas, se escuchará en los Claustros de Santo Domingo los días 4, 5 y 6 de septiembre .

Además, el 13 de septiembre, se celebra el Día Internacional del Caballo, organizado por la red Euroequus, y con el Concurso Nacio-nal de Saltos Fiestas de la Vendimia *** como principal atractivo .

Jerez ofrece, por tanto, un completo calenda-rio de actividades relacionadas con la cultura vitivinícola, pero también con el flamenco, con la genuina Fiesta de la Bulería, que reivindican la inmejorable gastronomía local y su maridaje con los vinos jerezanos, que reivindica nuestra cultura, con actuaciones musicales, exposicio-nes, programas para niños, certámenes litera-rios, visitas a bodegas, recorridos por viñas y actividades en tabancos, entre otras muchas citas . En esta importante programación des-taca la colaboración conjunta de las iniciativas públicas y privadas, que se aúnan para brindar una extraordinaria oferta lúdica, cultural y de ocio de gran atractivo para el turismo .

No hay que olvidar las Catas Magistrales, donde las bodegas más señeras presentan sus vinos en maridaje con la gastronomía je-rezana acompañándose de actuaciones de

flamenco, exposiciones, un concurso de re-latos breves y otras actividades culturales . O el ciclo De Copa en Copa y las rutas por los tabancos .

Y como cita ineludible: la Pisa de la Uva, una hermosa ceremonia que reproduce el rito del primer mosto y su consagración ante la puer-ta principal de la Catedral, que recuerda los aranceles sobre el vino que ayudaron a la edi-ficación del templo.

En definitiva, Jerez es estos días el mejor lugar para los entusiastas de unos vinos úni-cos, selectos y escogidos, que seducen desde hace siglos a los amantes del buen vivir . No en vano, el prodigioso Shakespeare citó más de cincuenta veces el vino de jerez poniendo en boca del jovial y bravucón Falstaff, uno de los mejores homenajes con su frase; "Si mil hijos tuviera en primer principio humano que les enseñaría sería de abjurar de toda bebida insípida y dedicarse por entero al jerez" .

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia tienen un protagonista des-tacado en este año 2015: el Consejo Regulador del Vino “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry”, cuya Denominación de Origen, la primera de España, cumple 80 años con un programa de actividades, que se están celebrando a lo largo del año con la colaboración del Ayunta-miento y otras empresas locales .

Con el objetivo de difundir la memoria de una institución decisiva en el devenir social y económico de Jerez, el viernes 4 de sep-tiembre se abre, en la Sala De Profundis de Los Claustros de Santo Domingo, la expo-

sición “80 años en defensa de lo nuestro” . La muestra, conmemo-rativa de la creación de la prime-ra Denominación de Origen de España, hace ahora 80 años, rinde homenaje a los tres pilares en los que se asienta la singularidad de los vinos de Jerez y a la institución que durante estas ocho décadas ha tenido su razón de ser en la defensa de aquello que configura nuestra Denominación de Origen: nuestra tierra, nuestra gente y nuestra cultura .

En la muestra, que se desarrolla en Los Claustros de Santo Domingo, destaca distintos diseños de eti-

quetas de los vinos genéricos que embotella el Consejo, embotellados especiales con mo-tivos de efemérides, piezas del patrimonio del Consejo, las distintas tierras de los pagos del marco, antiguos documentos de los gre-mios anteriores la creación del Consejo, los primeros reglamentos que datan de 1935, entre otras muchas piezas .

Desde su publicación oficial en 1935, la del jerez fue la primera denominación de origen de España y sirvió de modelo a las que la si-guieron . Con ello dio carta de naturaleza a un concepto que en aquel entonces era total-mente novedoso en nuestro ordenamiento jurídico: el de Denominación de Origen . Un sistema de defensa y protección para aque-llos productos cuyas características son el resultado del territorio del que surgen: de la tierra, las gentes y la cultura de lugares con-cretos . En pocos productos como el vino de Jerez alcanza este concepto un significado tan perfecto .

Durante el desarrollo de las Fiestas de la Ven-dimia se celebra la tradicional Pisa de la Uva, un acto con el que se representa el nacimiento del nuevo mosto, pero a través del sistema utiliza-do hace años en las numerosas bodegas y laga-res con los que contaba la ciudad . Este evento, como en ediciones anteriores, tendrá un esce-nario de excepción, como es el reducto de la Catedral de Jerez, en recuerdo por los arance-les sobre el vino que ayudaron la edificación de este templo . Los vinos de Jerez, sobre todo el Brandy, estaban gravados con altos impuestos y la construcción de este templo se sufragó con el dinero de un impuesto especial que permitió la Corona .

Este evento, con el que se da por inaugurada de manera oficial la programación de las Fiestas de la Vendimia, tendrá lugar el martes 8 de sep-tiembre, a partir de las 20 horas, y la entrada al mismo es libre y gratuita . Este acto suele contar siempre con gran afluencia de público y cuenta con la asistencia tanto de la alcaldesa de Jerez como de otras autoridades de la ciudad .

Esta espectacular ceremonia comenzará con la llegada de un grupo de vendimiadoras, que una a una irán vaciando sus cestos llenos de uva en el lagar instalado a los pies de la Catedral . Allí le

estará esperando una cuadrilla de hombres del Consejo Regulador, que serán los encargados de ir pisando los racimos de uva, de manera que poco a poco se vaya extrayendo el primer mosto tras la vendimia . Una vez salga este primer cal-do, el mismo será bendecido . Será el momento más emotivo, que tendrá lugar con la salida del mosto por la piquera, ya que en ese momento sonará el Himno de la Vendimia y repicarán las campanas de la Catedral .

Una vez que finalice este tradicional el acto de la Pisa de la Uva, a partir de las 21 horas, y en otro marco incomparable, como es el Patio de Armas del Alcázar de Jerez, se celebrará la Re-cepción Oficial de las Fiestas de la Vendimia de Jerez . Se trata de un encuentro de la alcaldesa con todos los sectores implicados en el desa-rrollo de este programa festivo .

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia acogen una de las actividades que más solera y arraigo tiene en-tre los jerezanos, se trata de las Catas magis-trales en las que, en una iniciativa del Ayun-tamiento, las bodegas del Marco ofrecen un encuentro en torno a los vinos de Jerez y a sus múltiples posibilidades de maridaje con la mejor cocina de la tierra, proporcionada una edición más por el catering AltaCazuela .

El marco incomparable y soberbio del Patio de Armas del Alcázar de Jerez albergará esta nueva edición de las Catas magistrales que comenzarán el miércoles, 2 de septiembre, con los vinos de la bodega Beam Suntory .

Además de Beam Suntory, en las Catas ma-gistrales participarán las bodegas del Grupo Estévez, González Byass, Williams & Hum-bert y Lustau .

Además de estas Catas magistrales que se han convertido en toda una tradición en-marcadas en las Fiestas de la Vendimia, se podrán degustar los excelentes caldos de nuestra tierra en una Cata comentada de Vinos Viejos de Jerez, en la que se comenta-rán 4-5 vinos de Jerez impartida por perso-nal experimentado y que se celebrará en la Sala de Catas Calidad en Boca . Así como en la cata comentada que ofrece en su sede el Consejo Regulador .

Otra propuesta para degustar en esta oca-sión el tradicional brandy de la tierra es la Cata de Brandy organizada por el Tabanco el Guitarrón de San Pedro en la que se podrá degustar cuatro tipos de brandy jerezano acompañados de frutos secos y chocolate .

Jerez tiene en septiembre una cita ineludible en la Fiesta Gastronómica de la Vendimia, un evento que por méritos propios se ha conso-lidado con éxito en el calendario festivo, con una excelente oferta de tapas maridadas con vinos de jerez a precios económicos . Esta fiesta está organizada por el Ayuntamien-to y la empresa 956 y repite escenario en la Alameda Vieja, aunque con fechas distintas, pues este año se celebra del 15 al 20 de sep-tiembre y abre desde el mediodía hasta bien pasada la medianoche (de 13 .00 a 2 .00 horas todos los días excepto el sábado con el cierre a las 3 .00) .

La feria estará integrada por 16 casetas, pertenecientes en su mayoría a estableci-mientos de hostelería de la ciudad, que tie-

nen la oportunidad de presentar su oferta gastronómica en un espacio conjunto ubica-do en una zona, como es la Alameda Vieja y el Conjunto Monumental del Alcázar, con un extraordinario atractivo turístico y de ocio . La excelente calidad de esta cita gastronómi-ca parte del alto nivel de los establecimien-tos participantes y de la solicitud por parte de la organización de precios populares que combinan una tapa de nivel maridada con un vino de Jerez .

Y la música no puede faltar en este escenario lúdico, que desde su primera edición ha cose-chado un enorme éxito . Todos los días habrá conciertos diarios en el templete con entra-da libre y gratuita y se instalarán atracciones para los más pequeños .

No hay duda . La mejor forma de disfrutar de las Fiestas de la Vendimia es disfrutar de nuestros vinos de copa en copa . Para ello, y con el objetivo de que propios y extraños puedan degustar el amplio repertorios de los caldos jerezanos, del 10 al 12 de septiembre "De Copa en Copa" ofrece en los Claustros de Santo Domingo una exposición y muestras de vinos de Jerez con posibilidad de probar-los en los stands de las bodegas participantes acompañados de una buena tapa . Una cita imprescindible que tendrá entrada libre, aun-que habrá que pagar cada degustación, de vino por un euro y de vinos VOS y VORS, dos . Para los reincidentes habrá un bono de cinco euros por seis degustaciones y de diez euros para los vinos VOS y VORS .

Las bodegas que participan en este exitoso evento, que reúne cada año a un numero-so público ávido de saborear los mejor de nuestros vinos, son, entre otras, Díez Mérito, Beam Global, Estévez, Álvaro Domecq, Lus-tau, González Byass, Williams & Humbert, Garvey y la cooperativa Nuestra Señora de las Angustias . Y para acompañar, las empre-sas de alimentación presentes son La Quese-ría, Queso Payoyo, Montesierra y Herpac .

Y para no pasar muchos calores, la muestra se abre los jueves y viernes de 20 .30 a 23 horas y el último día, el sábado, de 12 .30 a 15 .30 horas . Salud .

Una de las actividades más populares de las Fiestas de la Vendimia es la Ruta de los Tabancos de Jerez y la Vendimia, una cita con varios establecimientos, en las que se ofrece una copa de fino y aperitivo en estos locales típicos, que además concursarán en el II Concurso de Ornamentación de Tabancos Atanasio Muñoz "Nene" . Toda una experiencia irresistible para quienes quieran conocer, sobre el terreno, los más añejos despachos de vino que caracterizan a nues-tra ciudad .

Las bodegas de Jerez abren sus puertas durante las Fiestas de la Vendimia para dar a conocer al pú-blico el proceso de ela-boración de los vinos de jerez en una actividad que se ha consolidado ante su extraordinario atractivo turístico . La mayoría de las grandes bodegas de la ciudad se apuntan a esta apertura, en la que los visi-tantes tendrán la oportu-nidad de visitar las instala-ciones y familiarizarse con un proceso de gestación único y genuino, que da lugar a las magníficas va-riedades del jerez .

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia son un magnífico ejemplo de cómo la iniciativa pública y pri-vada se unen con el objetivo de ofrecer una completa programación de actividades re-lacionadas con la cultura vitivinícola en sus diferentes ámbitos . Si las visitas a bodegas, las catas magistrales, las rutas de tabancos y otras muchas se han consolidado con un éxi-to asegurado, los recorridos por viñedos de nuestra campiña permiten saborear sobre el

terreno cuáles son los pagos y casas de viñas más emblemáticos de nuestro municipio .

Disfrutar de un atardecer en un viñedo, de-gustando un magnífico vino y un aperitivo, o ver también como cae el sol en un cine de verano bebiendo los mejores vinos en com-binación con otras bebidas y maridar con quesos y miel en escenarios como el Rancho Cortesano son algunas de las actividades programadas en el ciclo festivo . Hay iniciati-vas que llaman la atención como la actividad Napia de Oro, por de la cual se puede pasar una tarde divertida en la viña, descubriendo, con el sentido del olfato vinos de jerez y otros productos o pasar una mañana en una viña conociendo la viticultura del Marco de Jerez y catando variedades de uvas de mesa .

La programación de las Fiestas de la Vendi-mia también acogerá la segunda edición del Encuentro Garrapatero “Vente Pa’ Jerez”, que se celebrará los días 11 y 12 de septiem-bre, en el Alcázar .

Como artistas más destacados, este evento contará con Kiko Veneno, que ofrecerá un concierto único eligiendo de entre todas sus canciones aquellas más venenosas y que más le gustaban a Migue Benítez . También cabe destacar la participación de Diego Pozo, que con la Banda del Ratón, tocará junto a artis-tas invitados, el disco póstumo de Migue, "Matajare 9", que cumple 5 años desde su publicación .

ENCUENTRO GARRAPATERO

Tras el éxito cosechado en su primera cita, este evento mantiene su formato multifuncional con conciertos, exposición, zoco de artesanía y conferencias en torno al legado del artista jerezano Migue Benítez, el arte garrapatero y la fusión del flamenco, el rock y el blues.

En el primer “Vente Pa’ Jerez”, más de 60 artis-tas pasaron por el escenario del Alcázar para interpretar canciones de Migue Benítez en Los Delinqüentes y de "Matajare" junto a versiones de bandas seminales como Triana o Pata Negra .

Fue un emotivo homenaje que concentró a público desde todos

los rincones de España e incluso

desde el norte de Europa y sudamérica .

Desde la organización se subraya que el Vente Pa" Jerez apuesta por artistas "cien por cien flamenco-punk, pioneros y con-tinuadores . Además no sólo cuidamos los conciertos . Queremos disfrutar de la convi-vencia en todos los espacios, en buena com-pañía, con esa filosofía de amor y respeto a la naturaleza de la que Migue hizo gala . Con exposiciones, charlas y vídeos sobre su lega-do y con lo mejor de la música de fusión con raíces andaluzas" .

La programación de este evento recoge que el viernes 11 y sábado 12 de septiembre, se celebrarán los conciertos en el Alcázar, con la participación de Diego Pozo y la Banda del Ratón, José de los Camarones con Paco Lara y el Bó, Tu Otra Bonita, Con Ele, Kiko Vene-no, Los Gipsy Rock, Propane Lucrando, Niño Libre, Caye Cayetana, Vergüenza Ajena, Al Vuelo, La Rama del Patio y Podenco, entre otros artistas .

Al margen de todas estas actuaciones, tanto el viernes como el sábado permanecerá abierta una exposición titulada "Migue Benítez de Los Delinqüentes a Matajare, un recorrido por el legado del verde reverde", en la Guarida del Ángel (calle Porvenir, 1)

En este mismo espacio, es decir, en la sala Guarida del Ángel, se ofrecerán dos confe-rencias . El viernes 11 de septiembre, a partir de las 16 horas, se ofrecerá una

conferencia, en la que bajo el título “Deconstruyendo Matajare”,

se analizará con manuscritos originales y ma-quetas de Migue cómo fue el proceso de com-posición y creación del disco "Matajare 9" de Migue y la posterior compilación y el trabajo de edición de las canciones y las poesías que se publicaron en el disco-libro "Cómo apre-tar los dientes" . Asimismo, el sábado 12 de septiembre, en una mesa redonda titulada “Garrapateros en la red”, se compartirán ex-periencias, impresiones y recuerdos en torno a la música de Migue Benítez, Matajare y Los Delinqüentes y cómo este legado musical si-gue muy vivo en la red de redes y en la calle .

Las Fiestas de la Vendimia incluyen

en su programación la primera edición del Certamen de Piano

Ciudad de Jerez, que se celebra los días 4, 5 y 6 de septiembre en los Claustros

de Santo Domingo y aspira a consolidarse y a promover la formación musical desde las edades más tempranas . De esta manera, a la extraordinaria oferta de otras músicas se suma esta cita con un instrumento de gran arraigo en los círculos culturales y académicos de Jerez .

El certamen, iniciativa de la Asociación Musical Foresmus y la Asociación 2034 de Antiguos empleados de las Cajas de Ahorros de Jerez, San Fernando y Cajasol, está organizado por el Ayuntamiento, con el patrocinio de Bodegas Williams & Humbert .

El evento está abierto a la participación de estudiantes de piano españoles o extranjeros residentes en España y cuenta con tres categorías: infantil, juvenil y novel . Los intérpretes galardonados la oportunidad de ofrecer un concierto en el Teatro Villamarta, así como en Bodegas Williams & Humbert .

El Ayuntamiento y los promotores de este certamen apuestan porque éste tenga una continuidad y sea el germen de una cantera de intérpretes procedentes de las numerosas escuelas y centros de formación musical con que, tradicionalmente, cuenta Jerez .

Jerez festeja la vendimia por bulerías en uno de los eventos más prestigiosos y consagra-dos del flamenco en España, que pronto cum-plirá 50 años y que estrena etapa con una nueva ubicación: el patio de San Fernando del Conjunto Monumental de El Alcázar, un espacio más recogido con un aforo de 2 .500 personas . El espectáculo es el sábado 5 de septiembre y, bajo el lema ¨El origen¨ reúne a un cartel de una calidad extraordinaria “con lo más genuino y excepcional de un cante y baile” original de Jerez, según destacó la al-caldesa, Mamen Sánchez, en la presentación del evento .

Dentro de este amplio programa de acti-vidades culturales se podrá visitar la ex-posición Equus del Grupo Arroyo, en el Palacio de Villavicencio del 1 de septiem-bre al 11 de octubre . El Ayuntamiento colabora con el Consejo Regulador con la exposición conmemora-tiva del 80º aniversario de la Denomina-ción de Origen Jerez-Xerez-Sherry ’80 años en defensa de los nuestro’ que se celebrará del 4 al 27 de septiembre en la Sala De Profundis de los Claustros de Santo Domingo .

Uno de los lugares culturales más emble-máticos de la ciudad, el Museo Arqueo-lógico acogerá una visita temática sobre la historia del vino ‘Antes de las soleras y el catavino’ y la visita temática en torno al caballo en época medieval y una jornada de puertas abiertas, que se celebrará el do-mingo, 6 de septiembre, con visitas guiadas a cargo de la Asociación Amigos del Museo .

Conferencia de María DueñasUna de las citas para los amantes de las letras durante las Fiestas de la Vendimia será la conferencia que ofrecerá la escritora María Dueñas en la Cátedra sobre el Vino de Jerez que tendrá lugar en la bodega San Ginés del Consejo Regulador del Vino de Jerez . La conferencia de la escritora manchega tendrá lugar el miércoles 9 de septiembre .

Dueñas, que ha sido una de las literatas que con más fuerza ha irrumpido en las letras españolas en los últimos años, tiene una especial vinculación con la ciudad ya que su último libro ‘La Templanza’ tiene a Jerez como uno de sus principales escenarios .

Especial interés dentro de las actividades culturales programadas con motivo de las Fiestas de la Vendimia tiene también la conferencia que ofrecerá Carmen Borrego Plá en las bodegas Maestro Sierra el jueves 10 de septiembre con el título ‘El comercio del Jerez en el S . XIX: la visión de un hombre de su tiempo” .

La bodeguera e historiadora jerezana es una profunda conocedora de las tradiciones, la mentalidad y la idiosincrasia de la ciudad .

La solidaridad ocupa también su hueco en la programación de las Fiestas de la Vendimia con la celebración de varias galas ecuestres en instalaciones emblemáticas del mundo del caballo que guardan un extraordinario atrac-tivo turístico, como la Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, la Yeguada del Hierro del Bocado . La recau-dación de estas galas ecues-tres irá destinada a distintas asociaciones que realizan una gran labor con colecti-vos de personas con diver-sos tipo de necesidades .

Por tanto, aquellas perso-nas que deseen ayudar a los demás y a su vez disfrutar del mágico y bello mundo del caballo podrán hacerlo asistiendo al espectáculo “Como bailan los Caballos Andaluces”, que ofrece la Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, a beneficio de las Asociaciones “Proyecto Hombre y AFA La Merced- Al-zheimer”; al espectáculo "A campo abierto" de la ganadería de Torrestrella y Caballos de Álvaro Domecq, a beneficio de la Asociación Voluntariado Libre, y la gala de la Yeguada de la Cartuja "Hierro del Bocado", a benefi-cio de las asociaciones CEAIN y ACCEM .

LAS GALAS BENÉFICAS ECUESTRES, LOS CONCURSOS DE SALTOS, LA EXPOSICIÓN "EQUUS" Y EL CONCURSO DE DIBUJO INFANTIL COMPLETAN LAS ACTIVIDADES HÍ-PICAS ORGANIZADAS CON MOTIVO DE LA CELEBRACIÓN DEL DÍA EUROPEO DEL CABALLO

Al margen de estas galas solidarias y como novedad en la programación de las Fies-tas de la Vendimia de este año, el mundo ecuestre también estará presente con mo-tivo de la celebración del Día Europeo del

Caballo . Esta efeméride tendrá lugar el domingo 13 de septiembre, y se organi-zará de forma simultánea en todas las ciudades que integran la Red Europea Euroequus .

Con motivo de esta conme-moración se ha organizado una exposición de pinturas y esculturas titulada “EQUUS”, de una veintena de artistas del Grupo Arroyo, en el Pa-lacio de Villavicencio del Al-cázar de Jerez . También se celebrará el Concurso Na-

cional de Saltos **, del 4 al 6 de septiembre, y el Concurso Nacional de Saltos "Fiestas de la Vendimia" ***, del 11 al 13 de septiembre . Ambas pruebas tendrán como escenario la pradera del Complejo Deportivo Chapín .

Asimismo, los más pequeños también ten-drán su espacio con motivo del Día Europeo del Caballo, ya que podrán participar en un Concurso de dibujo infantil .

The Grape Harvest Festival will take place in the city of Jerez from September 1st to the 20th, dates that tradi-tionally mark a time when the city pays homage to one of the most important symbols of its identity . This fes-tive cycle allows us to celebrate a very important part of our history, one which the local government wishes to promote alongside a powerful tourist industry com-mitted to seeking innovation, providing quality and the very best services . An added attraction this year will be the commemoration the 80th anniversary of the Sherry and Brandy Regulating Council, thus guaranteeing both promotion and awareness of our wine-growing culture

As Mayor of Jerez I wish to reiterate my commitment to the economic development of a city whose culture and traditions provide a potential that we have the ob-ligation to exploit . In this way Flamenco is also destined to occupy a fundamental position in the organisation of tourist packages of the highest quality; allowing us not only to conquer but also to consolidate the visitor .

With these ideas in mind the local government is al-ready working to export genuine quality products and offer different products at different times of the year, enabling us to invite people to return to Jerez and enjoy the different events offered each season .

Our aim is to fully exploit the great potential of a city which possesses a range of unique attractions and which during the month of September has the added taste of our best wines . With this goal in mind we pres-ent a festive programme that will initiate the route we wish to follow, hand in hand with the people of Jerez, with the local peñas, associations and social groups in order to consolidate the September festival in accord-ance with the touristic project we aim to promote .

Jerez celebrates the Grape Harvest Festival from the 1st to the 20th of September and provides a full programme of events featur-ing sherry, perhaps more than ever this year as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Regulating Council, which will provide a prominent feature of the festive cycle . A large exhibition located in the Claustros de Santo Domingo organised by the Regulating Council and the Town Council will tell the story of the very first denomina-tion of origin to be created in this country and a reference for all that were to follow .

This year the Grape Harvest Festival also aims to attract a younger visitor with the second edition of the music festival “Vente pa’Jerez 2015” which will take place in the Patio de San Fernando of the Alcázar on Fri-day, September 11th . More music, this time to the sounds of the National Piano Compe-tition, which promotes musical training from an early age, in the Claustros de Santo Do-mingo on the 4th, 5th and 6th of September .

Totally dedicated to SherryJerez will organise the Grape Harvest Festival from September 1st to the 20th featuring a full programme of cultural and festive events related to the 80th anniversary of the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Regulating Council .

In addition, September 13th sees the celebra-tion of the International Horse Day organ-ised by the Euroequus network and featuring the Grape Harvest Festival National Horse Jumping Competition as its major attraction .

Jerez therefore offers a complete calendar of events related to our wine-growing culture, but which includes Flamenco with the genuine Fi-esta de la Bulería and also features our unbeat-able local cuisine with pairings of local dishes with different types of sherry; our local culture with musical performances, exhibitions, events for children and activities in the “tabanco” sher-ry taverns amongst many others .

This extensive programme of events has only been made possible thanks to the collabo-ration of both public and private initiatives, joining forces to provide an extraordinary combination of educational, cultural and lei-sure activities which will prove very attrac-tive to tourists .

Not to be forgotten are the Tasting Master Classes, where our most renowned wineries present their ranges of sherry paired with local dishes accompanied by flamenco, exhi-bitions, a short story competition and other cultural activities, or “From Glass to Glass” and the “Tabanco Route” .

One event certainly not to be missed is the “Treading of the Grapes”, a beautiful ceremony that enacts the rite of the first grape must of the year and its consecration before the doors of the Cathedral, in memory of the taxes on sherry that helped finance its construction.

All in all, during this period Jerez is by far the best place for those enthusiasts of unique,

select and well-chosen wines that have been seducing lovers of good living for centuries . Not in vain did the prestigious playwright Shakespeare mention sherry over fifty times and place in the mouth of that loveable rogue Falstaff the words: “If I had a thousand sons, the first humane principle I would teach them should be, to forswear thin potations and to addict themselves to sack” .

The GuaRdian of Sherry is 80 years oldA comprehensive exhibition in the Claustros de Santo Domin-go describes the history of the “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry” Regulat-ing Council and features unique exhibits from its valuable herit-age collection .

The Grape Harvest Festival has an outstanding protagonist this year: The “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry” Regulating Council, whose Denomination of Origin, the first in all Spain, celebrates its 80th anniversary with a programme of events taking place throughout the year with the collaboration of the Town Council and local businesses .

With the aim of promoting awareness of the memory of an institution which has been deci-sive in the social and economic development of Jerez, Friday September 4th sees the inaugura-tion of the exhibition “80 years defending what is ours” in the Sala De Profundis of the Claustros de Santo Domingo . This exhibition commemo-

rates the creation of the very first Denomination of Origin in Spain, 80 years ago, and pays homage to the three pillars upon which rests the unique-ness of sherry as a wine and the institution that over eight decades has been dedicated to de-fending the components of the Denomination of origin: our land, our people and our culture .

This exhibition, which takes place in the Claus-tros de Santo Domingo features labels of dif-ferent design from generic wines bottled by the Council, special bottlings to commemorate special events, pieces from the heritage collec-tion, samples of soil from the different vineyards of the region, historic documents from trade associations formed prior to the creation of the Council, and the very first regulations dating from 1935; all of this plus many other exhibits .

Sherry became the first denomination of origin in Spain as from its official publication in 1935 and served as a model for those that followed in its wake . This in turn served to legitimise a concept that was in those days totally original in our legal framework: that of a Denomination of Origin . A system of defence and protection for those products whose characteristics are the result of the territory from which they arise: the land, the people and the culture of specific plac-es . In few products does this concept achieve such a perfect significance as it does with sherry.

Treading of the GrapesThe traditional Treading of the Grapes cere-mony takes place during the Grape Harvest Festival, an act representing the birth of the new must of the year featuring a manual sys-tem used years ago by numerous wineries and

baskets into a press installed at the foot of the Cathedral steps . Standing in wait is a team of workers from the Regulating Council who are then charged with tread-ing the grapes in such as way so that, little by little, the first must is extracted . Once the must has been extracted it will be blessed, perhaps the most moving moment as the Grape Harvest Hymn is sung and the Cathedral bells ring out .

Once the traditional act of Treading the Grapes ends at 9pm the Official Reception of the Jerez Grape Harvest Festival takes place in the remarkable setting of the Patio de Ar-mas del Alcázar de Jerez . This is where the Mayor has the opportunity to greet repre-sentatives from all the different sectors that have had an active role to play in developing the festive programme of events .

This event, as in previous editions, will take place in an exceptional setting outside the main entrance to Jerez Cathedral, in memory of the ancient sherry tax that helped to finance the construc-tion of the church . Sherry and especially Bran-dy were heavily taxed and the construction of the church was financed with funds raised by this special tax permitted by the Crown .

This event officially inaugurates the programme of the Grape Harvest Festival and will take place at 8pm on Tuesday, September 8th and entrance is free . This act is usually well attended by the public and the Mayor of Jerez and other local dignitaries will also be in attendance .

Sherry and food Master ClassesThe wineries of Jerez pair their best wines with dishes pre-pared by AltaCazuela Catering

The Grape Harvest Festival plays host to one of the most typical and most popular events for the local people: Master Classes in which, as part of an initiative of the Town Council, a selection of wineries from the region offer the chance to taste the multiple possibilities provided by sherry paired with local dishes provided once more for this edition by Alta-Cazuela catering .

The amazing setting of the magnificent Patio de Armas del Alcázar de Jerez plays host to this new edition of Tasting Master Classes, which will begin on Wednesday, September 2nd with the presentation of wines from the Beam Suntory winery .

Other wineries participating in the Tasting Master Classes along with Beam Suntory include Grupo Estévez, González Byass, Wil-liams & Humbert and Lustau .

In addition to the Tasting Master Classes, which have now become a traditional part of the Grape Harvest Festival, the excellent wines from our region can also be tasted in a Com-mented Tasting of Old Sherries during which 4-5 different sherries will be commented on by experts at the Calidad en Boca Tasting Rooms . A commented tasting will also be organised at the facilities of the Regulating Council .

The gReat food and Wine pairing fair From the 15th to the 20th of September the Alameda Vie-ja provides the setting for The Grape Harvest Gastronomy Fair, offering food and sherry at economical pricesIn September Jerez has an appointment not to be missed during the Grape Harvest Fes-tival, an event that through its own merits has become successfully consolidated on the festive calendar with an excellent range of tapas paired with different types of sherry at economical prices . This fair is organised by the Town Council and repeats the venue of the Alameda Vieja, although this year the dates have changed as it will be held from the 15th to the 20th of September and opens from midday until well past midnight (from 12 noon to 2am every day except Saturday when it closes at 3am) .

The fair consists of 16 “caseta” stalls, mainly belonging to bars and restaurants of the city that are given the opportunity to present their gastronomic wares in a single venue, such as the Alameda Vieja and the Conjun-to Monumental del Alcázar, both extremely attractive places for tourism . The grape haRvest, from glass to gLassLos Claustros de Santo Do-mingo will host the exhibition “From Glass to Glass” one of the most popular events of the festival that offers sherry tast-ing at affordable prices .

Let there be no doubt . The best way to enjoy our Grape Harvest Festival is to enjoy our wines from glass to glass . With the aim of en-abling both local people and visitors alike to taste our wide range of sherries, “From Glass to Glass” offers an exhibition and sherry sam-pling from September 10th to the 12th in the Claustros de Santo Domingo, with the pos-sibility to taste our wines accompanied by a tapa on the stands of participating wineries . Entrance is free but a charge is made for tast-ing; 1 Euro for a glass of sherry and 2 Euros for a glass of VOS and VORS sherries . For the more persistent there are 5 Euro vouchers which are good for six tastings and of 10 Eu-ros for VOR and VORS sherries .

The wineries participating in this success-ful event, which each year attracts a general public avid to taste the best of our wines, are, amongst others, Díez Mérito, Beam Global, Estévez, Álvaro Domecq, Lustau, González Byass, Williams & Humbert, Garvey and the cooperative Nuestra Señora de las Angustias . To accompany them, food companies attend-ing include La Quesería, Queso Payoyo, Mon-tesierra and Herpac .

So as to avoid the heat of the day the exhi-bition will open Thursday and Friday from 20.30 to 23.00 and on the final day, Saturday, from 12:30 to 15 .30 . Cheers!

The wineries of Jerez open their gates during the Grape Harvest Festival so that the gener-al public can get to know the sherry making process, an activity that has become consol-idated thanks to its enormous attraction for tourists . The majority of the great wineries of the city participate in this event in which visi-tors have the opportunity to visit the facilities and familiarise themselves with a unique and genuine gestation process which gives rise to the magnificent varieties of sherry.

All the participating wineries will also offer the visitor the chance to sample their wines

quality of this gastronomic event rests in the participating establishments and the fact that the organizers have requested popular prices for a quality tapa paired with sherry .

Music cannot be missing from a festive event that has proved enormously successful ever since its first edition and there will be free live music every day on the municipal band-stand, as well as attractions for children .

From tabanco to tabancoOne of the most popular activities of the Grape Harvest festival is the “Grape Harvest Festival Route of the Tabanco sherry taverns” in which several of these establishments par-ticipate, offering a glass of fino sherry and an aperitif in these typical traditional sherry bars, which in addition will be competing in the II Atanasio Muñoz "Nene" Tabanco Deco-ration Competition . A unique experience for those who wish to know, first hand, the old sherry taverns so characteristic of our city .

Along the Albariza way Numerous initiatives offer tours of vineyards in the region with tastings, original food pair-ings, cinema and grape tasting .

The Grape Harvest Festival provides a mag-nificent example of how public and private in-itiative collaborate with the aim of providing a full programme of activities related with the culture of wine-growing in its many different spheres . If visits to wineries, tasting master classes, tabanco routes and many others have consolidated guaranteed success, tours of the vineyards in the region allow us to sa-vour first hand the most emblematic pagos and casas de viñas of Jerez .

Enjoy sunset in a vineyard, tasting a mag-nificent wine and aperitif, or watch the sun go down in an open-air cinema sipping the best of our wines in combination with other drinks and paired with cheeses or honey, in settings such as the Rancho Cortesano; all this to name but a few of the activities pro-grammed for the festival period .
