The Arizona Pool Scene has lost another member with the passing of Bob Soto from Prescott. Bob has been an active part of the local pool community for as long as I can remember and his presence will surely be missed. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held starting at 2pm on January 17th at Barefoot Bob’s in Prescott. I hope to see everyone there. The Mezz Tour will be here in town on January 10th and 11th at Bullshooters . It will be a great opportunity for everyone to catch some of the best players on the west coast in action. Pool fans should really try to get out and catch some of the matches.

Until next time... - Mike

Galati Wins One Pocket Madness EventJim Galati bounced back from a second round loss to Billy Garrett, and didn’t lose another match on his way to winning Bullshooter’s One Pocket Madness event on December 20th.

The winners side came down to Bret Huth and Bobby Emmons with Bret mov-ing on due to Bobby being otherwise occupied with a match on another table.

Galati sent Garrett to the seats in 4th place and then took the forfeit win over Bobby Emmons to earn his spot in the finals against Huth.

The final extended race to three was all Galati as he won the match 3-0 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Jim Galati $2302nd Bret Huth $1703rd Bobby Emmons $1104th Bill Garrett $70

Burt and Hopell Split at Knobbys

Burt Balancad and Hopell Ampongan split two sets and ended up splitting first and second place at Knobbys 9’s and under 8-ball event on December 5th.

Hopell won meeting #1 with a 2-0 score for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Bernie Store had just eliminated Frank Alvarez in 4th place. Store would settle for third though, after a loss to Balancad in the semi finals.

Burt won the first set of the finals 2-1, but Hopell took the first game of the 2nd set before both players agreed on a split.

Complete Payouts:1st Burt Balancad $2251st Hopell Ampongan $2253rd Bernie Store $504th Frank Alvarez $20

Hopell Ampongan and Burt Balancad with tourney director Sophia Morquecho

Emmons over Frost at Kolbys

A talented field of one pocket players made their way to Kolbys Corner Pocket on December 27th for the monthly handicapped one pocket event. There was no easy path through these brackets with Scott Frost, Bobby Emmons, Bernie Pet-tipiece, Lenny Marshall and Tres Kane all looking to be difficult obstacles for a player navigating the brackets.

The winners side came down to Scott Frost beating Marshall 2-0 for the hot-seat.

Emmons would emerge from the one loss side after defeating Pettipiece 2-1 and then Marshall in a lighting fast 2-0 decision.

The final between Frost and Emmons was a true shootout with both players making great shots and putting together long runs. The handicap would prove to be too much for Frost to fade as Emmons won the match 3-1 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Bobby Emmons $2252nd Scott Frost $1253rd Lenny Marshall $75

The Desert Classic Tour closed out their 2014 season at Bullshooters in Phoenix on December 6th and 7th, and Mitch Ellerman took the opportunity to remind the Arizona pool player community that he is still the man to beat on the Desert Classic Tour.

Ellerman rode the winners side on Saturday with wins over Mike Hamman, Rudy Alameda and tour director Dennis Orender. Pacing Ellerman on the win-ners side was John Ritonya who had notable wins over Jose Gonzalez, Chuck Evans and Brian Reich.

Chuck Evans looked to be on his way to another strong finish until he ran into Ritonya on the winners side. The loss to Ritonya was followed by by a loss to Will Sexton and Evans finished out of the money.

A welcome guest on the tour for this event was WPBA veteran Sarah Rousey. Rousey admitted that she was out of stroke and took a “two and out” finish after losing to Sexton and Ray Robles.

Sunday play got underway with six players left in the running. Ellerman and Ritonya were the final two on the winners side, with Tim Daniel, Dennis Oren-der, Brian Reich and Rudy Alameda all hoping they could still win the event from the one loss side.

Daniel ended Orender’s tournament with an 8-5 scoreline, and Reich sent Alam-eda back to Tucson in 5th place with an identical 8-5 score.

The match for 3rd and 4th place came down to a notable finish that said quite a bit about Brian Reich. Reich and Tim Daniel were tied at hill-hill and Reich had a tough shot on the 5 ball. With the fans staring at the 5-ball to see if Reich would make a good hit, Reich tapped the cue ball with his cue. Reich presented a surprised Daniel with ball-in-hand and Daniel gladly ran out the rack for the win. While someone who doesn’t know Reich might have been surprised by him calling the foul on himself, anyone who knows him would have expected nothing less.

Back on the winners side, Ellerman was running out at will and turned in a 10-3 trouncing of Ritonya for the hot-seat.

It took some time for Ritonya to recover from the loss to Ellerman and he came out slow in the semi-final against Daniel. Ritonya would come back to make it a hill-hill match, but Daniel would win the case game to win the match 8-7 and earn the right to take his shot at Ellerman in the finals.

Unfortunately for Daniel, he discovered just how hard it is to beat a motivated Mitch Ellerman as Ellerman cruised to a 10-1 win in the first and only set of the finals.

Tournament director Dennis Orender expressed his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, as well as all of the staff at Bullshooters for hosting another great tourna-ment.

While this event signaled the end of the 2014 season, plans are already under-way with lots of changes for the upcoming 2015 season. In addition to the new junior program announced in these pages last month, many more announce-ments regarding format changes and sponsorship can be found in this month’s paper on page 8.

Perfect Juans Win Scotch Triples

In yet another unique tournament format, The Perfect Juans came together to win Skip & Jan’s Scotch Triples event on December 20th.

The Perfect Juans (Perfecto Diaz, Robbin Grammatical & Juan Silva) took the hot-seat with a 5-5 win over Team Wasted (Tony Denton, Percival Jauregui & Susan Wilbur) in a 5-9 race.

Cillaericch (Cilla Hernandez, Eric Lervold & Chris Carpenter) were on a roll on the left side of the board after losing their first match of the day. They won a very close match over Team Wasted that saw them run out to a 5-0 lead, only to then lose five straight games. They would go on to win the match 8-7.

Cillaericch came out strong in the 8-5 final race and led 3-1, but then stalled as The Perfect Juans won four straight games for the 5-3 win and first place.

2015 will mark the 8th year of the Desert Classic Tour, and the tour will see a number of changes in the new year.

The tour will be welcoming a list of new spon-sors, who should help 2015 to be one of the biggest and best years on the tour. Casino Del Sol Resort, in Tucson, has come on board as a title sponsor and they will be hosting the tour’s $2,500 added season finale in December. Neil’s Garage Cabinets, as well as Greenmail Email Marketing have also come on board as title sponsors of the tour. These new sponsorships will allow the tour to run nine $1,250 added main events, as well as the season finale. They will also allow the tour to run a $250 added 9’s and under “second chance” event on day two of each tour stop. Tour card holders will be welcome to play in the “second chance” event, whether they played in the main event or not.

Also coming on board in 2015 are Volturi Cas-es, who will donate custom cases to be award-ed to both the “A” and “B” top players on tour for the year. Volturi is Scott Frost’s case sponsor and he has generously agreed to not be considered for “top player” consideration. A custom cue sponsor is still being worked on at this time by tour staff.

Cue Sport International has come on board to sponsor the tour in 2015 and will award “paid entry” to the top “A” and “B” player for all three divisions of the 2016 US Bar Box Cham-pionship in Reno.

The local BCA, APA and TAP Leagues have

also come on board and will be offering a $25 bonus to the top finisher from each of their league systems for each event. There will also be a $100 bonus to the top finishing female player at each stop.

2015 is also going to see a major change in the format of each main event. No longer will the tour have “in house” ratings. Instead, a blanket classification system will see 9’s & above play-ing as “A” players, and 8’s & below competing as “B” players. There will no longer be a “C” player classification. The tour will no longer handicap matches based on player rating, but instead will group players within their classi-fication for Saturday play. “A” players & “B” players will compete in separate brackets all day Saturday and will then come together in one bracket on Sunday, with all Sunday players being in the money. This format change will assure a “B” player will compete for the hot seat and be guaranteed at least third place at every tour stop.

Any “out of state” player, who is not on the Az Ratings Committee list, will play as an “A” player. Any junior players taking advantage of the tour’s new Junior program (outlined in last month’s paper) will compete as “B” players.

The 2015 Tour schedule is as follows…

Mar 14th - 15th9’ 9-Ball at Bullshooters

The Annual Toys for Tots tournament held on December 17th at Bullshooters was again this year a big success. Players from all over the valley participated in the charity event and everyone had a great time playing pool and enjoying time with their friends.

There were a lot of new faces this year as well as the players who have been coming out every year to support this great event. As always, the APA juniors made a good showing in the tournament, with one of them finishing 2nd place. Michael Dale, at 16 years old, is fast becoming one of our elite players. Michael is a 7 rated player in the APA and is only just beginning what should be a great future in pool.

Our first place winner this year was Chuck Evans, who has always supported us in this tournament. Chuck has a very big heart, not only in his pool game, but in his generosity as well. Chuck donated back more than half of the money he won to the kids. To Gina and I, this was no surprise, this is what he does every year.

Coming in third was Brad Johnson who plays out of Bullshooters. Brad showed some very special sportsmanship during some of his matches. He was seen ac-tually coaching some of his opponents during their turn at the table. I think that action just epitomizes what this tournament is about. We would like to thank everyone who attended this tournament and donated a toy to the Toys for Tots program. This is a very special cause and we are very happy to see the players around the valley put down their serious game for one day to come out and have a good time to benefit a very worthy cause.

How To Win

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

This month I am going to give you some help-ful thoughts and techniques on winning. We all want to win, but if you play this game long enough you will realize you lose games and matches even when you play well. That can make you start to doubt yourself, and then you lose your motivation. I have found myself scared to lose rather than playing to win all the time.

Here are some examples

Lets say I am playing a lower rated player and the handicapped race has me going to 6 games and my opponent only going to 2 games, play-ing 8-ball. I find myself trying not to lose rather than not playing to win. I do not want to sell out, choke, dog it or scratch losing one of my opponent’s only 2 games needed.

Another example is when I play 9-ball I don’t want to make 7 or 8 balls and then sell out (leave) the final 9 ball which is the only impor-tant ball on the table.

These are all mental blocks I put on myself and of course the first step in fixing the problem is to recognize it.

Now how to fix the problem. Well, if I had the secret magic beans I would be a world cham-pion, but thats not going to happen.

There are some tricks you learn over years of playing though.

One trick I use is to break the rack of 9-ball into 1 thru 5 and 6 thru 9. When I am inside a rack and getting closer to the 9 (winning) I tighten up. Breaking the rack up helps me focus on the fact that once I shoot the 5 ball, now it’s just a new set of four balls. Go over and take a drink or take a moment and restart your thought pro-cess to focus on the remaining four balls.

If I feel I cannot run all the way out, I will plan for a safe inside those balls. I remind myself how happy I am when my opponent misses in the last four balls and I get a chance at the table. I wish I did have magic beans that I could sell my students, but the truth of the matter is that the games of cue sports are tough. It takes work and dedication to be successfull.

Take fishing. You usually have to stand in a lot of cool water before you are catching the big ones on a regular schedule.

The final trick that I have learned when I do get beat or choke is to keep my pride and class intact not to hate the better player.

I will guarantee that they did not just wake up one morning and play this game well. They worked hard and made sacrifices for their games too.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News January 2015

Mike, I read on Facebook that a dart player was bagging on Master’s players for being ar-rogant and thinking they were above everyone. What are your thoughts on this?

Very good timing on this as it has been a long time coming. I did read that a certain dart player was making stupid and generalized statements about Master’s players.

First, this individual can’t even spell “Master’s” and has no right to judge anyone. To call out any one group because of the acts of one is asinine.

Next, who or what is consid-ered a “Master’s Player”? I have shot as high as a 4.48 in the Master’s league, but now I am about a 3.0. Am I a Mas-ter’s player? We have a Mas-ter’s B League. Most shooters are from a 2.2 to a 3.0. Are they considered Master’s?

There are just as many mediocre play-ers that are arrogant, and just because someone is good at something doesn’t mean they are above anyone else.

Lot’s of low players are there more to party than play darts, and you can’t get them out of the smoking room and to the boards. The Master’s players I know are not arrogant and would be the first ones to back up the other players. They would also help others to improve their games, and if there is a charity event they are the first to show up and support it.

The Master’s as a group get a bad rep, and I for one am tired of hearing it. There are top shooters who treat players badly, get mad when they get a low player, and constantly complain if things don’t go their way. These are very few.

I have lower players who complain about the same things, in fact more. I know some not so good players who say “I always get a bad partner”. How

Ask Mike

about looking in the mirror, what is your partner saying?

I know some high lady players who want a modified draw where ladies don’t play ladies. If you shoot 3.0 and don’t have a weiner, why should you get a higher player than a 3.0 male?

Many of the Master’s players love a challenge and will gladly take a lower player. Rick Breckinfelder and some others take it personally and want to win those players some money.

So next time you get a good player and jump up to throw first, don’t wonder why they aren’t so excited to have you as a partner.

Just my opinions and I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Etiquette: An Old Subject For New (And Old) Players

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

I know I’ve written on this subject before, but I was recently asked to write on it once again. So, like it or not, here goes.

Many things that happen during the course of a pool game can be distracting (and sometimes downright irritating) to the shooter. When these distractions are unintentional on the part of the non-shooting player, they are usually due to a lack of proper education. The offend-ing person can simply be ignorant to the fact that they are disturbing the shooting player. In this case, the offense is usually somewhat forgivable.

But sometimes the offender is totally aware that his actions are disrupting his opponent’s game, and he is engaging in those actions for that very purpose. Experienced players call that sort of intentional behavior “sharking,” and sharking is a serious no-no in the minds of most pool players because it almost always leads to arguments and sometimes even to vio-lence. In other words, the offended player may not be very quick to forgive. Or forget.

Let’s look at some of the things that experi-enced players hate to see:

Non-shooting player standing at the table:

If there is a place to sit, you should be seated while your opponent is shooting. If there is no place to sit, you should stand away from the table, preferably out of the shooter’s direct line of sight. I’ve seen people (mostly kids) not only stand right up to the table, but actually move around the table to stand directly in front of the pocket that their opponent is shooting at. This is goof-ball behavior, and not some-thing you should even think about doing if you intend to play in any sort of organized compe-tition.

Slow play: Granted, everyone needs to take time to plan their shots and then visualize their execution before actually shooting the ball, but this whole process shouldn’t require more than 30-45 seconds on average for most players. Some very experienced players are even much quicker, having developed a rhythm that might average only 10-20 seconds between shots. There is no good reason for any player totake 2-3 minutes to slowly walk around the table, study and restudy every possibility, get down on shots and then back up again, and eventu-ally settle in on a shot only to take as many as eight to ten slow practice strokes before finally pulling the trigger. Sometimes this type of player might even miss the shot after go-ing through all that, only to stand at the table

shaking his head and thereby preventing his opponent from approaching the table. At the very least, this type of play is rude and incon-siderate. At the most, it is deliberate sharking. Either way, one should grow out of it, or quit playing altogether.

Chalk thieves: It’s no wonder that so many players have gone to carrying their own per-sonal chalk these days. It has almost become a necessity to do so in order to protect oneself from the guys who like to take the house chalk back to their seat with them, sometimes snatch-ing it off the rail just as the incoming player is reaching for it. Once again, this is an example of rude behavior. It’s very disturbing for a shooter to have to break concentration and go looking for a piece of chalk when proper eti-quette would allow for it to remain on the rail where it should be.

I just realized that I’ve ranted for quite a little while here and have hit on only three common sharking techniques. I can come up with a lot more, I’m sure, but I’ve run out of space for this go-around. I might have to do a follow-up article on this subject. You might even have a few pet peeves of your own that you’d like air. If so, contact me and let me know.

Mark & Adriel at Kittys

Mark Williams & Adriel Corral came back from a final four loss to Larry Wor-den & Bob Reimer to win Kitty’s 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event on Decem-ber 6th.

Worden & Reimer would go on to lose the hot-seat to Bill Wilcox & Mike Kurley and then lose to Williams & Corral on the one loss side to finish in third place.

Mark & Adriel won the first set of the double elimination finals with a one sided 5-1 score line. The second set would be much closer, but it was still Mark & Adriel with a 5-5 win to capture first place.

Adriel & Emmitt Win at Kittys

Adriel Corral & Emmitt Webb bounced back from a first round loss to come out ahead of twelve other teams at Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles tournament on December 20th.

On the winners side, D Riley & Don McClure looked unstoppable after their 6-2 win over Geoff & Andy Olson for the hot-seat.

Corral & Webb had found their game though, and were cruising through the one loss side. A hill-hill win over Claudia Justus & Selwyn Reams was followed up with a 7-2 win over Team Olson.

The finals went two sets with Adriel & Emmitt winning both sets 7-4 and 7-5 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Adriel Corral & Emmitt Webb $4702nd D Riley & Don McClure $2203rd Geoff & Andy Olson $604th Claudia Justus & Selwyn Reams $30

Kittys Scotch Split

Emmett Webb & Laura Boothroyd went undefeated, but it was Charlie Taylor & Harold Lyons who collected the lion’s share of the prize money available at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on December 27th.

Webb & Boothroyd made themselves comfortable in the hot-seat with a 6-4 win over Adriel Corral & Burt Balancad.

Taylor & Lyons would get revenge for their final four loss to Corral & Balancad by eliminating them 8-3 in the semi-final match.

Both teams agreed on a split instead of playing out the final match, but due to Emmitt & Laura not buying into any of the side pots, it was Taylor & Lyons who were the big winners for the night.

Complete Payouts:1st Emmett Webb & Laura Boothroyd $1901st Charlie Taylor & Harold Lyons $4103rd Adriel Corral & Burt Balancad $1504th Seth Johnson & Rob Villines $60

Since no one has ever made it a point to expose one particular individual in Arizona, I thought it was about time someone did. I am therefore taking it upon myself to be that person. The individual I plan to expose here is none other than Mike Howerton, the publisher/editor of Arizona Billiard & Dart News.

Perhaps the word “expose” is not the most ap-propriate one to describe what I want to share with you here. The word, reveal, would prob-ably be a better choice. I think I should reveal some important things about Mike Howerton, because he is not the kind of guy to reveal them, himself.

I first met Mike about fifteen years ago while covering the inaugural AZ State One-Pocket Championship at Tommy’s Billiards in Mesa. I was covering that tournament for Table Talk, a local billiards publication of the day. I was also contributing instructional articles to Table Talk in those days, and that was the reason Mike approached me and introduced himself at that tournament.

What Mike told me that day was that he was a website developer and that he planned to build a website dedicated to covering pool in Arizona. The name of the website would be AZBilliards.com. Mike asked me if I could start sending my instructional articles to him, as well. I said, sure thing, and that’s how our relationship began.

Fifteen years ago, Mike Howerton and I had

little idea how big AZBilliards.com would grow, or how important Mike would become to the entire billiard industry. As AZBilliards began publishing weekly results from regional tours all across the country, its following be-gan to grow at a very rapid pace. After a few years, a discussion forum was added to the site, and that’s when worldwide readership liter-ally exploded. It quickly became apparent that the “AZ” in AZBilliards, com could no longer stand for Arizona, but would have to stand for the A-Z of billiards. Now AZBilliards.com is considered to be the largest website of its kind in the world.

As a result of Mike Howerton’s growing re-spect as a “person-in-the-know” in the billiard community, he found himself being drafted to sit on various committees and boards of direc-tors. One of the most notable of these was a stint he did as a member of the board of direc-tors for the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA).

Several years ago, Mike got the urge to be-come more involved in Arizona’s billiards. His first move was to become owner of Arizona Billiard News. Next, he started and ran the Ol-hausen Tour, an organization that implemented state championships in several different dis-ciplines. He then took over the reins of the Arizona State BCA Association and from that entity he organized Arizona’s first casino-based league championships.

As things would have it, Mike Howerton

eventually found himself stretched too thin and felt a need to scale things back for a while. So he sold the newspaper and then announced the termination of the Olhausen Tour. The tour was soon reestablished as the Desert Classic Tour (DCT) and has operated under the direc-torship of Dennis Orender ever since. Also, responsibility for the promotion of the BCAPL state championships was turned over to CSI, the parent company of the BCAPL national organization.

Mike Howerton couldn’t stay away from Arizona pool for very long, however. A couple years ago, he took his old newspaper back over. (During Mike’s absence, the paper had been given a new name: Arizona Billiard & Dart News.) And very recently, Mike has ac-cepted responsibility for two other very impor-tant positions: 1) Director of the DCT, and 2) Chairman of the Arizona Rating Committee.

These most recent appointments should bode very well for many of Arizona’s competition pool players:

The DCT has been a well-run organization under Dennis Orender, but Dennis’s increasing responsibilities at his regular job was begin-ning to limit his ability to continue to help the tour grow. He was in need of help. And that’s where Mike Howerton stepped in. Mike’s ideas and refreshed energy, coupled with his poten-tial for bringing new sponsors on board, should pump new life into the tour.

(article continued on page 26)

An open letter to the pool community from Roger Long

PAGE 26

Arizona Billiard & Dart News January 2015

(Open Letter From Roger Long Continued from page 25)

The Arizona Rating Committee has labored under a stigma for many years. It seems to be a thankless job for anybody to serve as a committee member, let alone accept the totally thankless responsibility of acting as its chair-man. But Mike Howerton has accepted that responsibility, nonetheless. The committee is in need of strong and respected leadership. If anybody is capable of giving it that, Mike is the man.

I, for one, am very happy to see Mike How-

erton once-again invest so much of himself in the Arizona pool community. He has, at his very fingertips, the benefit of support and counsel from industry leaders from around the world. All of Arizona’s pool players should be proud that we have a man of Mike How-erton’s stature working right here in our own back yard. We can expect great things to come about in 2015.

Please note: The opinions in this letter are those of the author and do not neccessarily represent the opionions of this publisher.

With the success of the Ultimate 7’s event back in September, the 8’s and 9’s wanted their chance to prove themselves in this unique event and the Ultimate 8s and Ultimate 9s were scheduled for December 13th and 14th at Stingers and Skip & Jan’s.

The Ultimate 8’s event saw sixteen players at each location broken up into two groups each, playing round robin races to seven with the game rotating each rack from 8-ball to 9-ball to 10-ball and back again.

The Diamonds group at Skip & Jan’s was ex-tremely competitive with the three advancing players not being decided until the final round. Mike Hamman and Roy Anderson led the group with identical 5-2 records, and they would be joined by Bill Norish who turned in a 4-3 record, but lost his three matches by a total of only four racks.

The Spades group at Skip & Jan’s saw Jim Ra-batin and Ed Scott distance themselves from the field with 6-1 records. The final spot came down to either Felix Vasquez or Steve Henderson. Vasquez had to beat Ed Scott to guarantee a spot in Sunday play, but Scott was not going along with that idea and defeated Vasquez 7-3 to give Henderson the ticket to Sunday.

The Hearts Group at Stingers didn’t leave much drama with Burt Balancad, Brian Shepherd and Jon Naumann all going through the group with 5-1 records (each player played six matches due to a no-show).

The Clubs Group at Stingers was also pretty cut and dried with George Rowe undefeated and Jonathan Rowe & Steve Blackburn also advanc-

Sunday play at Skip & Jan’s saw a big surprise as George Rowe, undefeated on Saturday, dropped his first two matches 7-6 to finish out of the money. Jim Rabatin and Roy Anderson progressed through the winners side and faced off for the hot-seat, which Rabatin won 7-2.

Bill Norish had lost to Rabatin 7-6 mid-day on Sunday, but made his way through the one loss side with three wins, including a 7-3 victory over Anderson. Rabatin took away all doubt in the finals though as he cruised to a 7-1 win in the first and only set.

The Ultimate 9’s event was the same format, with one group of eight players at each location and the top four moving on to day two.

Skip & Jan’s 9’s group saw Mike Sandoval finish at 5-2 to advance. Donald Mangahas and Ryan Anderson both advanced with 4-3 records. The final player to advance came down to a tie breaker with five players tied at 3-4. That player would be Navin Talreja.

The 9’s group at Stingers ended in controversy when Terry Osborne failed to play all of his matches. Tres Kane and Jose Gonzalez were already assured spots in Sunday play, but position-ing between Jerry Stuck-art and Brian Reich was determined based on Reich receiving a 7-0 scoreline for his unplayed match against Osborne.

Day two was also a shocker for the 9’s as both group winners from Saturday were “2 and out” on day two.

Donald Mangahas took the hot-seat with a hard fought 7-6 win over Ryan Anderson, but Anderson didn’t stay on the left side for long as he defeated Brian Reich 7-6 to make his way to the finals. The finals took two sets to determine a winner, but they were both lopsided with Anderson scoring 7-2 and 7-1 wins for first place.
