I’m glad I said the new Diamond Pool Tour season was “tentatively” starting in March. Something came up and we aren’t starting the tour back up until April. Check out the tour poster on page 20 for the complete schedule, as well as some new sponsors for this season.

I would like to personally wish “good luck” to the Eastside 6s, 7s and 8s who are competing in the East vs West Big Six Shootout on March 6th. You will all need it.

Congratulations to Amanda Pulley for her win at the first stop of the AWBT’s new season. After losing her first match, Pulley ran through the one loss side and won the event. I think there is a message in there for all of us.

-Until next time Mike

Losing your first match in a big tournament generally leaves you with two options; you can tell yourself that this just isn’t your day and start thinking about what you are going to do after you lose your second match, or you can remind yourself that they have to beat you twice and get down to business. Amanda Pulley chose option two at the AWBT’s season opener at Bullshoot-ers on February 27th - 28th. After making that choice, it turned out that she didn’t lose another match.

Pulley was just one of the the twenty five play-ers in attendance for this event, but her 7-4 first round loss to Donna Taylor was the biggest upset of the first round. Unfortunately for Taylor, she would drop her next match to Jaye Succo 7-4 in round two. Succo would finish Saturday unde-feated after a win over Ashea Erdahl. Joining Succo on the winner’s side at the end of play on Saturday were Bernie Store, Justine Bishop and Susan Williams.

The one loss side looked just as tough with Pul-ley, Erdahl, Taylor and Sara Miller coming back to play on Sunday.

Sunday play on the winners side saw two hill-hill contests with Bernie Store sending Justine Bishop to the left side, and Succo sending Susan Williams left to join her. Meanwhile, Sara Miller eliminated Donna Taylor and Pulley sent Erdahl home in 7th place. Miller and Pulley then won their next matches, eliminating Susan Williams and Justine Bishop.

The match for the hot-seat was another close one, as Store trailed Succo early but mounted a comeback for the 7-5 win.

Back on the one loss side, Pulley was scoring her 6th and 7th straight match wins. She eliminated Sara Miller 7-4 and then Succo 7-5.

The single elimination final was an extended race to nine, and the ladies would use almost all of those games before a winner was finally crowned. Just before the match hit the three hour mark, it was Pulley pocket-ing the final 9-ball for the 9-7 victory.

The second chance tour-nament on Sunday saw Connie Soots defeat Marcy Thomas in the finals for first place. Tracy Price finished in third.

Tour director Tres Kane expressed his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates for adding $300 to the main event and $50 to the second chance tournament. Jose Gonzalez & Las Glorias Grille added another $100, and “friends of the AWBT” added another $200 to the event. Kane also expressed his thanks to Kristie Ortega and Scott for their help in running another successful tournament.

The AWBT will be back in action April 30th - May 1st at Skip & Jan’s in Gilbert.

Ridder Undefeated for Knobbys Win

Troy Ridder went undefeated through a field of 20 players to win Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-Ball event on February 5th.

Ridder rode the winner’s bracket and defeated Frank Alvarez 2-1 for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Chuck Parrill was on a roll after a second round loss to Ed Scott. After arriving on the one loss side, Parrill reeled off wins over Joe Nicita, Tyson Cole, Mike Howerton, Burt Balanced and Sophia Morquecho. Parrill kept the winning streak alive with a 1-0 win to eliminate Alvarez in the semi-finals.

The finals saw Ridder beat Parrill 2-1 in the first set for first place.

Probing The Problem Of Popping Tips

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

Have you ever had a tip “pop” off your cue while you were using it? I’m sure a lot of people have, but I can honestly say that I am not one of them. Whether it be one that was installed for me, or one that I installed myself, I have never experienced that problem.

As a lot of you know, installing tips is a big part of my business at Maestro’s Pro Shop. I’ve been performing this service for custom-ers since 1991. In that time, I estimate that I’ve installed somewhere around 20,000 tips. Now before you go doing the math and as-suming that I’m getting rich off of tip installa-tions, let me point out that the majority of my installations have been, and continue to be, on “house” cues that pay from very little to noth-ing at all, depending on the situation.

With that said, I can easily assure you that the high instance of tip replacements in house cues is not due to there being more of them, it’s due to more neglect and abuse by the people who use them. The most common cause of a tip popping off occurs when the player leans the cue up against a table and then walks away from it. The cue will often slide off the edge of the table and hit the hard floor, which then pops the tip and sends it flying several feet away. The second most common cause is when the player smacks the tip on the table in disgust

over a missed shot. The third most common cause is in the poor execution of draw shots, jump shots, and shots with side spin (English). All of these occurrences subject the tip to a sudden side impact which dislodges it from the ferrule.

But that is not the particular problem I wish to address here.

I have always guaranteed my tip installations. If any tip I’ve installed pops off prematurely, it has always been my policy to replace it at no charge. That has been an easy policy to main-tain since I have full confidence in the glue and methods I use. In 20+ years of doing tips, I had only two complaints about a tip popping off soon after installation, and both of those were by the same customer. After watching that gentleman shoot for a while, it became obvious that he was causing his own problem through his poor cueing technique.

Within the past couple of years, however, the instances of prematurely popping tips have increased. Most of these have been understand-able since they involve very hard tips being used on break cues that have very hard fer-rules. The “very hard” part here plays an im-portant role since hard materials do not absorb glue, which does nothing to help adhesion.

Then, when you consider that many players think they need to use English on the break…well…bad things are bound to happen.

But none of that does anything to explain the few recent cases I’ve had where playing tips have popped off of playing cues wielded by good players. This is a problem that has me somewhat perplexed and quite concerned. I haven’t changed anything. There is only one brand and type of adhesive that I use, and it’s the one that was recommended to me in the early nineties by famed cue repairman, Joe Blackburn. And my methods of cleaning, squaring, sanding, scoring, pressing, trimming and shaping haven’t changed either. So why have tip failures increased?

To find an answer to the problem I’m going to have to take a somewhat scientific approach. I will have to observe and record all consisten-cies. One thing that has been pretty consistent so far is the report that the tip failed during a draw shot. But you can’t tell players to never draw the ball if they want to keep their tip on, and there simply has to be other contributing factors behind the premature failure. I’ll keep looking.

In the meantime, my policy of free replace-ments will stand.

Pulley & Page Split At Kolbys

Amanda Pulley and Tony Page were opponents on the table once at Kolby’s Fe-buary 13th 7’s & Under 9-Ball event, and they both decided that was more than enough as they split first and second place.

The early meeting between these two was in the second round, and saw Pulley score the win. From there, Pulley would go on to defeat Chet Lahti & Randell Moore to take the hot-seat.

Page would bounce back from the loss to Pulley, and win five in a row on the one loss side to earn his place in the finals.

Both players agreed on a split of first and second, instead of playing out the final match.

How Is Your Brain Trained?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

The game of pool takes a lot of brainpower and we seem to learn new things every time we play. When we have done something for years, our brains are trained. The example of driving comes to mind. After driv-ing for years, we know our stealth and weakness. Driving at night or in bad weather is avoided if we can. How is your brain trained in your pool game? Do you miss the same type of soots repeatedly? The game of pool is 90% mental and our brains play a big part. How to retrain your brain? Here are some options and techniques to help.

Observe your thoughts. Even if it is just for 10 minutes. After all, you cannot fix a problem you do not know about. Once you observe your thinking, you will know where to start. Choose a mantra for the day. In the morning, decide on a mantra. You will repeat it silently to yourself as you go about your day. Maybe it is something as simple as “I can make any shot” or “I can run out for anywhere.” Using a mantra will not only give you something positive to think about, but it also takes up time your brain might otherwise use for negative thoughts. Use an app. In today’s technologically based society, there is an app for everything — including positive thinking. Add technology into your training and think about how you can use it. Transform a negative into a positive during practice and in a match. Make a gratitude list. On one of those off days, sit down with a piece of paper and come up with five things you are grateful for in your pool game.

All these techniques can help you retrain your brain to help you get to the next level.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News March 2016

Once again, Bullshooters in Phoenix hosted the American Cuesports of Arizona League’s 12th Annual Arizona State Singles and Team Championship February 26th - 28th, with over 100 players competing in four different divisions (Open and Ladies Teams & Singles), looking to bring home a state title. By the time the dust settled, new singles and team champions were joined by defending singles and team champions.

The Ladies Singles division should just be renamed “The Tina Hess Singles Di-vision”, as she defended her title from last year in style. Hess (representing the Desert Shark’s League) won the title last year without losing a match, and she duplicated that performance this year. A win over Peg Hurst (Prescott Billiards Association) for the hot-seat was followed up by another win over Hurst in the first set of the final match. Jodi Hirning (Desert Sharks League) finished in third place after a first round loss to Nichole Wilson was followed by a run through the one loss side. She would end up losing to Hurst in the semi-final match.

The 38 players in the open division all knew that a new champion would be crowned, with defending champion Chris Carpenter not in attendance this year. That new champion would be Dameon “Dee” Riley, but it wasn’t easy. Riley defeated Brady Juve for the hot-seat, but Brady wasn’t going to give up on win-ning the title after just one loss. Juve bounced back from that loss by eliminat-ing Al Barlow in third place, and the rematch between Riley and Juve was on in the finals. Juve took the first set of the finals, but Riley regained control and won the second set for first place.

The Ladies Team division saw three teams compete in a round robin format with each team facing the other two teams twice. Last year’s third place fin-ishers, The Deli Avengers (Desert Sharks League), dominated this division with three match wins out of four. Their sole loss came to The Diamond Divas (Prescott Billiards Association), but the three match wins was more than enough to earn them first place.

The Open Team Division saw a repeat champion as Bad Attitude (from the Stro-kers League in Lake Havasu) defeated the Lhotkaness Monsters (Prescott Bil-liard Association) two out of three sets for first place. Bad Attitude defeated the Monsters first for the hot-seat. On the one loss side, The Peacemakers (Wings of Fear League from Maricopa) were on a roll. After a second round loss to BS Enochs, the Peacemakers had won three straight matches and knew they would need one more for a date with Bad Attitude in the finals. That wouldn’t happen though, as The Lhotkaness Monsters finally handed them their second loss.

The first set of the double elimination finals was a close one, going to the Lhot-kaness Monsters 13-11. The second set of the finals would be more decisive as Bad Attitude scored a 13-6 win for first place and a second straight state title.

Tournament directors Lee White and Jodi Hirning expressed their thanks to Mike & Julie Bates for another successful State Championship and $1,000 in added money for the event.

APA Phoenix Metro held its annual ‘Southwest Challenge Tune-Up’ tournament on Sunday, February 21st at Main Street Billiards. Each year, APA sponsors an 8 Ball regional tourna-ment called ‘Southwest Challenge’ and is held at the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The tournament is a 3 person team event including opponents from all over the Southwest including California, Arizona, and Nevada.

Locally, APA Phoenix Metro holds what they call the Tune-up tourney that is run under the same format and rules used in Las Vegas. 8 teams competed to earn a free trip to the Las Vegas event coming up in mid March. Winners receive free room, entry fee, and table time while at the 3 day event.

The event is an 8 ball, 3 person team, single modified tournament with the players set in a certain rotation that does not change throughout the tournament. This format adds up to some in-teresting matchups as the tournament progresses. The fact that teams cannot change their rotation means that players have no choice in what skill level their opponent will be.Other events along with the main event this year will be a scotch doubles 9 ball event along with several ‘Mini tournaments’.

This year’s winners were Sandeep Sharma, Sher-yl Ringlero and Joe Shipley. They will be going to Las Vegas in March to play with approxi-mately 250 other teams for cash and trophies. The normal entry to this event is $510 per team, including room and entry fee.

The next event of this kind is the Southwest Challenge 9 Ball event held in October at the same location. The same format is used in that

tournament as well except the game is 9 ball instead of 8 ball. Again, teams from California, Arizona and Ne-vada will be competing for the cash and trophies. Mini tournaments are running throughout the weekend in both tournaments so players have something to do when they are eliminated in the main event.

The Southwest Challenge tournaments have become very popular among the APA players because anyone can enter the tournaments. They are a non-qualifying events so you just pick your players, pay your entry and go. Anyone interested in attending one of these events should contact the local league operators at 602-920-9192 or 602-920-9193.

APA Valentines Day Scotch Doubles

This year’s APA Valentine Day Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles Tournament win-ners are Marc Underwood and Audrey Grieser who normally play out of Main Street Billiards on Tuesday nights. Although they play on the same team, this tournament was the first event the two of them played together in a scotch doubles format, but that was no deterent for the two. They both played excep-tionally well in the qualifying tournament that won them a trip to Vegas. They received the entry fee and rooms paid as a result of their win.

The Valentine Day Jack and Jill Tournament is the first in a series of doubles and team events that qualify players to attend the APA National events in Las Vegas at the Westgate Hotel and Casino. The APA Singles National champion-ships and the Team National Championships are listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as the largest Pool Tournament in the world. APA Phoenix Metro will be holding their Singles Regional next month at Main Street Bil-liards and their team LTC events that will qualify several single players and teams to participate in the National events. APA pays for the teams and players entry fees and hotel rooms while they are participating.

Congratulations go out to the second place team, Stephanie Martin and Travis Moore, who also played very well. In all 27 teams showed up for a shot at the first place award.

Wear Wins First One Pocket Madness

Bull Shooter’s One Pocket Madness event, on February 6th, came down to two new names in the finals. Recent Arizona newcomer, Bill Stock put together a quality day with wins over Tres Kane, Brian Reich, Karloz Chavez and then Sun City’s Richard Wear for the hot-seat.

After the first round loss to Stock, Kane came back with five straight wins, and faced Wear in the semi-finals. That match went to Wear with a 2-0 win over a noticeably exhausted Kane.

With the late hour, both Stock and Wear agreed to play one game for the title. The game would go to Wear for first place in the event.

Complete Payouts:1st Richard Wear $2302nd Bill Stock $1703rd Tres Kane $1104th John Fenwick $70

Brian Reich not only rounded up the players and ran the three day open list tournament at Bullshooters on February 24th - 26th, he also still had the time to win the event.

This single elimination event featured a re-draw after each round of play, so players had no idea who to prepare for until their matches were drawn.

The first round of play saw it’s fair share of upsets, with Chris Adams knocking off Bernie Pettipiece 13-11 and John Ritonya upsetting Gus Briseno 13-6.

Both Ritonya and Adams would drop their second round matches, with John losing to Eric Young 13-6 and Chris losing to Bret Huth 13-10.

The next round of play saw Bret Huth defeat Daric Craft 13-8 and Brian Reich eliminate Eric Young 13-5.

The final match between Brian and Bret went to Brian 13-7 for first place.

Lervold Wins Skip & Jan’s 8 & Under

Tim Daniel brought another unique tournament format to Skip & Jan’s on February 27th with an event that had winner’s side players facing each other in 9-Ball on the 9’ tables, and one loss side players facing off playing 8-ball on the bar tables. Even with that format, eventual tournament winner Eric Lervold never had to bother with 8-ball or the smaller tables.

Lervold cruised through the winner’s side, beating Chan Pham, John Marquis, Dwayne Beagle and then Andy Benavidez for the hot-seat.

Benavidez had his hands full on the one loss side with Sam Lenschow. After losing to Benavidez 5-1 on the winner’s side, Lenschow was liking the smaller tables and had scored wins over Marquis and Chad Purvis. The match between Sam & Andy went hill-hill before Andy pulled out the win.

The final match saw Benavidez take an early 2-0 lead, before Lervold won five of the next six games for the 5-3 win and first place.

Stinger’s 7’s Split

Hugo Villanueva and Rico Gonzalez took completely different routes, but they still ended up splitting the Stinger’s 7 & Under 9-Ball event on February 6th.

Gonzalez took a direct approach, cruising through the winner’s side and scoring a 7-2 win over Jamie Gee for the hot-seat.

Villanueva took a more scenic route, after a second round loss to Amanda Pul-ley left him on left side of the board. He quickly re-calculated his route and won six straight matches on the left side of the board to earn his spot in the finals against Gonzalez.

The first set of the finals went to Villanueva 7-6, and the two players agreed on a split from there.

In addition to her chores as tournament director, Sophia Morquecho took home $190 for first place in the break contest with seven balls made in three breaks.

Greg Brown Wins Main St 8’s & Under

Greg Brown defeated Ed Scott twice to win the Main Street Billiards 8’s and Under event on February 6th.

After an Ed Scott win over JR Ascension and a Greg Brown win over Matt Gagne, Scott and Brown met up for the first time of the day. That match went to Brown 9-6.

Scott took the loss in stride, and got to work on the left side of the board. A 9-8 win over Bernie Store was followed up by another 9-8 win, this time over Matt Gagne. Scott had an easier time with Justin Smith, who Brown has just defeated for the hot-seat. Scott beat Brown 9-4.

The first set of the finals was the second meeting between Brown and Scott, and like the first meeting, this match went to Brown by the score of 9-6.

Taylor & Niichel Split at Main Street

Donna Taylor and Lynda Niichel met for the hot-seat and then decided on a split at Main Street Billiards’ Ladies Only $50 entry tournament on February 21st.

Donna was on a roll on the winner’s side, with lopsided wins over Tiffany Craft and Alison Wayland. Lynda had a much tougher time, with back to back hill-hill wins over Claudia Justus and Angela Renee.

On paper, Taylor was the early favorite in the battle for the hot-seat. They don’t play the match on paper though, as Niichel scored the 7-5 win over Taylor.

On the one loss side, Taylor held off a tough challenge from Tiffany Craft in a 7-6 match.

Instead of playing out the finals, Taylor and Niichel agreed to split first and second place.

Sophia Wins Main Street Ladies Only Event

Sophia Morquecho scored back to back wins over Amanda Pulley to finish off her undefeated run at Main Street Billiards’ 7 & Under Ladies event on Febru-ary 21st.

Morquecho started her day with back to back hill-hill wins over Jaye Succo and then Justine Bishop. Pulley scored 7-4 and 7-3 wins over Sonia Flores and Marcy Thomas to earn the right to play Morquecho for the hot-seat. That match would go to Morquecho 7-4.

On the one loss side, Pulley found Justine Bishop waiting. Both ladies had lost to Morquecho in this event, and both ladies were looking for a shot at revenge. That opportunity would go to Pulley, with a 7-4 win over Justine.

The finals would go one set, with Morquecho scoring a 7-5 win over Pulley.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News March 2016

The 2016 Az Open is in the books, but won’t be forgotten anytime soon. This event was one for the ages, breaking a record for entries, and paid out over $35,000. Bull Shooters is where it was happening and if you weren’t there, you missed the dart party of the year.

We had 11 different states represented, and at least 8 cities in Arizona. Ten events, over four days, saw some great darts being played at all levels. Old friends and new came out to support the best dart tournament in the Southwest. The pictures will show the winners, so it is time to thank those who made it happen.

First and foremost, Troy Vending goes beyond what anyone can expect from a vendor. Not only to help plan, put together thousands of stats, build boards, deliver boards, round up sponsors, and give up all of the coin drop/greens fees. They bring most of the company and have them here running charts, taking sign-ups, doing raffles, basically everything but cleaning the toilets. Without you, this tournament would not exist.

Arachnid dart boards are shipped here each year at no charge, thanks to Mr. Sam. Not only that, but he sends someone down here to work, again at no charge.

Every year, we ask the Bull Shooters staff to put their lives on hold, work lots of hours, and put up with hundreds of crazy dart players. They met the challenge and went way beyond with service and teamwork like I have never seen any-where. You all rocked it.

And finally, to the players, you make it happen each and every year. You come, you compete, you drink, you eat, and mostly you have a great time. More than any year, the compliments from all of you were awesome. That makes it all worth it. You have made the Az Open one of the best tournaments in the country and I thank you for that.

Here is a list of the great people that you should buy a drink for:

Set-up Crew: James Roberts, Larry Colburn, Bucky, Jason Wilson, TJ Talent, Scott North.

Prep: Scott North and Suzie Q.

Charts: Scott, Suzie Q, Bruce, Abie, Bucky, Roger & Lisa.

Sign-Ups: Three Musketeers: Kris, Pam & Beth

Others: Bill, Doug and all of the Troy Vending guys who got boards ready and got them here and back.

Dart Shop & Drawings: Sargi

And the whole Bull Shooters Staff…..

Ray Lapinid & Eric Winemiller were the team to beat at Kitty’s 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event on February 7th.

Lapinid & Winemiller had little problem with John Casey & Ronald “Gator” Nesbitt, as they beat them for the hot-seat 8-4.

John & Gator found Ken Carroll & Mark Norman waiting on the one loss side for them. After a second round loss, Ken & Mark had won three straight match-es. Their winning streak would be brought to a halt though, as John & Gator beat them 7-3 in the semi-final match.

The final match would go one set with Ray & Eric scoring an 8-5 win for first place.

List current as of first 2016 stop (Bullshooters)

71 players converged on Pockets in Tucson on Saturday, February 20th. Some came from far away but the real story is those that came out of the woodwork in Tucson. We had four come from Phoenix, one came from Casa Grande, three come from Benson, one from Sierra Vista and six come from Las Cruces, NM. Meanwhile 56 players from Tucson came out to play! I have to say that this was partly because we had a major event to play in, but more due to players being curious about the new FargoRate handicap system as well as how many players prefer play-ing in a handicapped tournament, where more players have a chance win.

We had a wide variety of skill levels come out to play. Using the FargoRate handicap we had 6 players rated 650 and over, 8 players between 600-649, 15 players 550-599, 24 players 500-549, 13 players 450-499, 4 players 400-449 and one player under 400. Todd Sheehey, a 5 on the AZ Ratings system and a 406 in Fargo survived the field to take the title. Chris Lozada, a 6 and 460 in Fargo took second. Third place went to Josh Montes from Las Cruces, NM who is an 8 in AZ Ratings and a 572 in Fargo and fourth went to Aaron Purdy, a recent 9 in Arizona and a 624 in Fargo.

Todd and Chris won their way to the match for the hot seat through stiff competition. Chris beat Ronnie Kidd in an 8-3 match 3-5. Meanwhile, Todd survived a Hill-Hill match with Steve Peterman to earn his chance at the saddle with a 3-6 win. Hill-Hill was one of the stories of the event. An interesting observation was how many matches in this FargoRate tournament, with stronger spot than the traditional AZ Ratings handicaps would offer, went to the case game. I would guess around 40-50% of the matches re-

ported came back at hill-hill.

Other items of note: Jessica Derezinski took the Women’s Only Side pot and had a strong tournament. She fin-ished 13th out of 71 players and edged out Tracey Elliot late in the night Saturday. Not only did Tucson have a strong showing but Las Cru-ces, NM showed up as well. We had six players from Las Cruces and three in the cash. Mickey Provencio, a 9 and 625 in Fargo, finished 9th. He was set aside by Abraham Sanchez, an 8 and 562 in Fargo, who finished 7th. Abraham was then beat by Josh Montes, an 8 and 572 in Fargo, who then went on to survive a furious comeback from Ronnie Kidd. Josh needed 4 games to Ronnie’s 7 and Josh got out to a 3-0 lead. Then, almost in a blink of an eye, Ron-nie came back and made the match hill-hill. The final 9-ball hung up in the corner for Ronnie and Josh got to move on. Josh then beat Aaron Purdy 5-3 to then fall to Chris Lozada 4-4.

Tourneys, League, & Foosball Festivities…a.k.a. Fun If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t it just New Year’s just a couple weeks ago?! However, I just looked at the calendar and, as shocking as it sounds, it’s already March. WOW…the year is flying by and the start of the 2016 Spring League is just around the corner, The King of the Ring playoffs are complete, and the Interim League is coming to a close. We continue to draw a good number of teams, a wide variety of skill levels, and newcomers to our weekly tournaments, so read on if you want more details.

Interim League/Saturday ScrimmagesWe’ve had 25 events spread across both of these popular venues with 70 different foosers partaking in these twice weekly competitions since Foos Bowl XIV was played November 21st. The Interim League tourneys alternate between Dukes Sports Bar in Scottsdale and Main Street Billiards in Mesa on Wednesday evenings, while the Saturday Scrimmages take place at Stinger’s Sport Bar in northwest Phoe-nix Saturday afternoon. Skill levels vary from Beginners to Pros with handicaps ranging from 0.1 to 8.9 with the overall overage being 3.74. In addition, these 70 competitors have played in an average of 5.6 events.

Following are the current top 10 standings.1. Bryan Hendricks: 0.8682. Rick Weirman: 0.7693. Chris Petit: 0.7504. Rissa Veloso: 0.7115. Paul Freund: 0.6836. Rulon Smith: 0.6817. Jim King: 0.6398. Billy Nolan: 0.6139. Bob Duncan: 0.60810. Brain Sternberg: 0.606

In addition to the bragging rights for ending up at the top of the leader board, the following prizes will be awarded at the end of Interim League period.• League medal to the player with the best

overall winning percentage• FREE ENTRY to the next official league

season to the player with the best winning percentage with a current rating/handicap > 4

• FREE ENTRY to the next official league season to the player with the best winning percentage with a current rating/handicap < 4

• 50% of league fees for the person with the most interim events played

As it stands now, Bryan will be capturing the top two categories, Rick will be capturing the third, and Paul and has a definite lock on most events played. However, since there are a few weeks remaining, Rick’s 0.769 winning per-centage is at risk from a surging Chris who is a mere 0.019 behind. Watch out Rick as Chris has you in his site for snatching the free league entry.

King of the RingThe King of the Ring round-robin playoffs were held Friday, February 12th, at Dukes Sports Bar in Scottsdale. The round-robin culminated with owners, Nick Bourdos (Pro) and Mike Sames (Expert), of the two best win-ning records facing off for the title match, with Nick walking away the victor.

This event was run over a 15 week period with players earning points for each tournament played as well as points based on where they placed each week, with the top six place finish-ers facing off for the crown. The was defi-nitely an enjoyable event as evidenced by the enthusiastic level of play, which I believe was the result of the round-robin playoff format combined with the handicapped point system of Pros having to score 8, Experts 7, Amateurs 6, and Beginners 5. The following four foosers rounded out the balance of six.• Pat Cain (Amateur)• Brad Chamberlain (Played as a Pro)• Jim King (Amateur)• Bob Duncan (Amateur)

2016 Spring League Leaping lizards ladies and gentlemen…it’s time to register for the 2016 Spring League! Drop what you’re doing and go to www.Arizo-naFoosball.com/Leagues IMMEDIATELY and sign up...and you won’t be assessed an entry fee until we get closer to starting. The league has a start date of March 29th and there’s a lot of work that goes into coordinating everyone’s preferred night and locations spread across 11 (subject to change) valley sites so the quicker players register the easier it is to finalize the schedule. There are currently three fully registered teams, six other partial teams, and eight others looking to form teams so far. So, do what you need to do to recruit, draft, em-ploy, hire, find, clinch or beg someone to play with you as you definitely don’t want to miss out on this. Remember that last season we had 20+ teams that participated in both Eastern and Western Conferences.

Everyone who’s been in the league over the past several years realizes how awesome, well run, fun, and competitive it is. Where else can a true beginner in a new sport realize suc-cess against veteran players on a consistent level to bring them back again and again to continue their pursuit of improving their game? Each new season brings original and improved elements to this successful venue, whether it’s tweaking the rules, enhancing the website, getting new sponsors, or introducing newcomers to the game.

To summarize, each season brings 16 weeks of competitive play for 3-person teams, followed by a couple weeks of wildcard playoff berths, culminating with individual title matches and the season ending Foos Bowl Championship, specifically Foos Bowl XV. First and fore-most, this is a handicap league which ensures each and every player, whether beginning or

veteran, has an even shot at winning. You might ask yourself how well can a begin-ner fare against the more experienced player. Well, that has been remedied by the handicap system used to level the playing field for all players. Each new competitor gets evaluated to establish a baseline by other veteran play-ers or the league director. True beginners may start at a rating of 1.0 or below and work their way up as their skills and winning improve. For example, if a player with a 0.5 handicap is playing against a 3.5 caliber player (a ratings difference of 3) the lower handicapper will be spotted 3 points in their individual games with the winner being the first to reach 7. Com-bined team events are calculated by averag-ing the player’s handicaps and then doing the math. Handicaps are recalculated after each week’s matches and this continues through week 14, whereby they are locked for the re-mainder of the 16 week season and playoffs.

Each week’s matches are comprised of the fol-lowing rounds:• Doubles: 3 games of doubles alternating

with teammates• 1 on 1 Battle: 2 games of Singles; 2 games

of Goalie War; 1 game of 5 Bar War; & 1 game of Forward Shoot-out

• Rollerball: Rollerball indicates that the ball(s) must be kept moving at all times. One game of 3 on 3 two-ball rollerball and one game of 2 on 2 one-ball rollerball

• Team ROTO: This indicates that as one team scores they rotate a player into the game and one out of the game. There is one game of singles and one game of doubles.

• Point Champion: Summation of the total points per game scored. The team with the most points wins this round.

The winner of the weekly match is determined by the total rounds won. If teams are tied, which can happen, there is a one game playoff whereby the home team selects either the game or the players and the visitors then selects the opposite element not selected by the home team.

MiscellaneousAnyone looking to improve their game will be heading to Las Vegas for the 2016 Hall of Fame Classic foosball tournament taking place March 9-13 at the Flamingo Hilton. Based on the amount of chatter taking place at the local venues, there are quite a few foosers from Phoenix heading north to face off against some of the world’s best. It would be great for anyone attending to take a few photos during the competitive battles so please share them as those not going would like to catch snippets of the action.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in any of the previously mentioned venues in any capacity, visitArizonaFoosball.com and regis-ter using the current signup sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818.
