SW Pocket Billiards ChampionshipOctober 6th - 9th saw the Greater Mid-west Poolplayers Association bring the third annual Southwest Pocket Bil-liards Championship to Bullshooters in Phoenix.

This event promised eighteen events and over $20,000 in payouts with full fields. While the fields might not have reached their full size, fans in atten-dance were still treated to four days of top notch amateur pool and two exhi-bitions from true legends of the game.

Play got underway on Thursday with three events.

The Men’s Senior 9-Ball was won by assistant tournament director Bob Ball (Portage Indiana), who defeated Vic Tyynismaa (Lake Havasu) for the hot seat 5-3 and then defeated David Dar-nell (Koutz Indiana) 5-3 in the finals.

The Open 9-Ball was dominated by players from Las Vegas with three of the six cashing spots going to Vegas players. Fred Boggs (Vegas) was undefeated, including a 6-3 win over Chris McCreary (Vegas) and then a 6-5 win over Arizona’s Jose Gonzalez after Jose eliminated McCreary 6-3 on the one loss side.

The Women’s 9-Ball was a round robin event that was won by local player (and Arizona Billiard and Dart News contributor) Sophia Morquecho. So-phia finished with an 18-7 record after five matches. Second place went to Leandra Gaff with a 17-8 record.

Friday saw three more divisions crown champions.

The Ladies Senior 8-Ball was won by Arizona’s Mary Helen Mondragon, with a 12-6 record in round robin play. Second place went to Lee White with a 10-8 record.

The Men’s Senior 8-Ball saw Jimmy Moore (Las Vegas) - son of the legend, Cowboy Jimmy Moore - go undefeated and score back to back 6-2 wins over

Bob Ball, Tom Rossman, Nick Varner and Cecil MesserFred Boggs for the hot-seat and Harold Lyons in the finals.

While Moore was winning the Men’s Senior event, he was also competing in the Men’s Platinum round robin 8-Ball event, where he edged out Greg Kuhl for the win. Moore had a 24-11 record, while Kuhl was one game short at 23-12.

Saturday saw four more events come to their conclusions.

The Sportsman’s 8-Ball Event was won by Vic Tyynismaa, who defeated Jeremy Schneider for the hot-seat and again in the finals.

Mike Zinge (Peoria) had to dig down deep in order to win the Bronze 8-Ball division. Zinge defeated Anje Ander-son 5-3 for the hot-seat, but lost to Pete Williams (Mesa) in the first set of the finals. Zinge got it back together for the second set of the finals and defeated Williams 5-2.

The Men’s Gold 8-Ball Division was won by Vegas’ Chris McCreary, who defeated fourteen year old phenom Shawn Begay 5-2 in the finals.

The Ladies 8-Ball division was another round robin affair, with Arizona’s Sara Miller dominating the event with a 23-2 record.

The final day of the event was set aside for the ACS Lucasi Cues All American Tour’s Open 8-Ball and Ladies 8-Ball Events.

The Open event saw Shawn Begay (New Mexico) earn a bit of revenge as he edged Bob Ball in the finals. Begay beat Ball 5-4 for the hot-seat and then again 5-4 in the finals.

The Ladies event won won by Ari-zona’s Jodi Hirning with a 5-4 victory over Arizona’s Teresa Eibner in the finals.

The amateur play at this event was complimented by exhibitions on both Friday and Saturday night.

World Artistic Champion Tom “Dr Cue” Rossman wowed the crowd on Friday night, and 8-Time World Cham-pion Nick Varner was on hand to offer instructional tips as well as an exhibi-tion on Saturday.

All in all, the event was a success, and promoter Cecil Messer thanked Mike Bates for hosting the event, as well as Bob Bell, Tom Rossman, Nick Varner and all of the league operators who supported the event..

Madi & Rick

Rick & Madi went undefeated to win the Jimbo’s Weekly Blind Draw Doubles event on October 8th.

The hot-seat was won with a victory over the team of Alvi & Chris Roberts.

Alvi & Chris earned their second shot at Rick & Madi with a win over Cathy & Gary in the semi-finals.

The finals saw Alvi & Chris get on the board first with a win in the 501 game when Madi and Rick were unable to close out a 75 at the end.

Madi and Rick won the cricket game after Rick threw a seven-mark at the start of the game and they never looked back.

The rubber match was 501 and Rick led the way with back to back low tons, setting the table for Madi to close out the game in the end.

Seemed like it was all about Gus this month. Gus Briseno won everything in sight. There is a rumour that he even showed up at the AWBT stop wearing a skirt hoping to play, but I have no proof of that. Seriously, congrats to Gus for a great month. A big welcome to Crutcher Automotive and C & C Billiard Tables, who joined the paper this month. Check them out on pages 9 and 11. Also a huge welcome to dart player Dave Fatum, who joins the paper this month. Dart players will need no introduction to Dave, and pool players could probably learn something by reading his column this month too. The SW Pocket Billiards Championships were fun. Ed Scott wins Knobbys 8-BallKnobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday Octo-ber 7, 2011. 15 players came out to try and take home first place prize money of $210.

Ed Scott and Evans Bishop battled it out for the hot seat, and with a 2-1 win over Evans, Ed

Evans Bishop, Ed Scott and Burt Balancad

sat in the hot seat.

Evans played Burt Balancad and finished in 3rd place after losing to Burt hill- hill.

Burt and Ed played the first set of the double elimination finals with Burt win-ning 2-0. Ed Scott came back and beat Burt 2-0 in the second set to win first place. What a great match these two players had.

Congratulations to Ed Scott for a $210 1st place finish. Burt Balancad took a 2nd place finish of $120 and Evans Bishop took home $40 for 3rd place.

Special thanks to Bruce and Carol for hosting this great monthly tournament. They always provide food for all the players, not to mention the 200% pay back.

Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday November 4, 2011.

Stingers’ October’s Monthly Tournament was a tough field with a great payout! With $500 added and 21 players, there was a lot of money to be won.

Susan Williams beat Oscar Avilla 8-5 giving Oscar 5th/6th place. At the same time Jonathan Rowe defeated Burt Bal-ancad 8-2 sending Burt home with 5th/6th place.

Susan and Jonathan played for 4th place; Jonathan was able to come out on top with an 8-5 win, giving Susan 4th place.

On the winners side, Marvin Lawson played Rick Armbrust for the Hot Seat, they both went to the hill, but Rick was able to get the win and move into the hot seat.

Jonathan and Marvin then played for 3rd place. Jonathan played solid and won 8-4.

Jonathan then went on to face Rick. Both players shot very well and it was a great match! They both got onto the hill, but after a well played safe by Rick, he was able to come out on top and take 1st place in the first match.

Congratulations to the players that were able to cash, and thank you to everyone who came out to support our tourna-ment!!

The Desert Classic Tour got back into action over the weekend of October 1st and 2nd at Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe.

The event was handicapped big table 10-ball and as usual, day one included it’s fair share of upsets. Gus Briseno sent Mitch Ellerman pack-ing to the one loss side in the second round on Saturday and Gary Koschnik had two big upsets as he sent Chuck Evans to the one loss side and then sent Tres Kane packing on the left side of the board later in the day.

Sunday play began with six players, two unde-feated and four with one loss.

The hot-seat match between Gus Briseno and Chris Lulek started out close at 2-2, but Briseno took his game up a notch and won fi ve of the next six games to take the hot-seat 7-3.

Both members of the Williams family were alive on the one loss side, but Susan’s tournament was brought to an abrupt halt as Mitch Ellerman handed her a 9-0 beating. Things went better for Mike Williams as he defeated Brett Huth 7-4 in a match that was described as “not even that close”.

Mike got his chance to defend Susan’s honor in the next match as he faced off against Mitch Ell-erman in a match that had Mike racing to 7 and Ellerman racing to 9. Mike proved that he didn’t need the spot, as he won the match 7-3.

Next up for Williams was Chris Lulek, who had sent Mike to the one loss side in the fi nal round on Saturday. This match was a straight race to seven and Williams came out of the gate in a hurry and took an early 3-0 lead. Lulek then

came right back and tied the match at 3-3, only to see Williams get back on track and move back out to a 5-3 lead. Lulek would fi ght back, but not be able to get back to even as Williams won the match 7-5.

The double elimina-tion fi nals was another straight race to seven, but Williams would have to beat Briseno twice in order to add this tournament to his resume.

Williams looked like a man on a mission in the fi rst set as he cruised to an early 5-1 lead over Briseno. Briseno would fi ght back to within two games at 6-4, but Wil-liamsthen won the fi nal game for the 7-4 win and forced a second set.

The second set was closer, but still saw Williams lead most of the way. The match bounced between Williams having small leads and tie scores for what seemed like hours. After four hours and two sets of tough 10-ball, it seemed like Williams’ endurance fi nally gave out as he saw a 5-3 lead evaporate and Briseno win four straight games for the 7-5 lead and fi rst place in the event; his second straight victory at Kolby’s in as many weekends. Arizona All League Invitational AZPL Men’s & Women’s Players of the Month

This month, the men’s player of the month is Chris Negrin, who was Player of the Week for the 3rd time in 6 weeks!

Chris plays on Sunday with Pippen Ain’t Easy and on Thursday with Up the Creek. He’s been a part of the AZPL since it’s inception in 2003, playing in over 237 matches and ranked 20th All-Time in the league!

Winners

APA Phoenix Metro held their 8 Ball Tri-Cities Event on October 8 and 9 at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. The Tri-Cities is the first step for APA teams to qualify for a chance to play at the APA National Team Championships in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. 32 teams that finish highest in their divi-sions are selected to play in this event. 8 of these 32 teams will advance to the “Cities” Championships that will be held next July, and will produce 4 teams that will represent Phoenix at the National Team Championships.

The competition was great and the sportsmanship was even better between all the teams. Everyone had a great time thanks to the hospitality of the staff at Main Street Billiards. This event also includes the awards presentation for all the teams across the valley. Winning teams and players were awarded trophies and cash for their efforts during the regular season’s play. Each player from the 1st and 2nd place teams in each division received cash and trophies, while 3rd place received cash. Individual efforts were also recognized with Top Gun trophies and $50 cash.

The Eight Teams advancing for this session are:

“8 Ball in the House” , captained by Ann Neal, and includes McGregor Robert-son, Robert and Amy Coville, Eli Grauberger and Chris Stovall.

“Jacob’s Ladder #2” captain Dad Jacobs, Mike Young, Dan Cruz, Michael Va-lenzuela, Robbins Whitley, Chuck Genco, Chris Zenner and Brian Provence.

All APA teams going to the National event receive rooms, entry and table fees, and $1100 Cash to spend as they want.

Other events at the Tri-Cities include Speed pool, Break contests, and local qualifier boards. Pool cues and cases among other items were given away all day long.

We want to congratulate all the teams participating in this event. These were the top 32 APA teams in Maricopa County and they should all be proud of them-selves.

David McCauley qualifiesfor APA Championship

APA Phoenix Metro would like to congratulate David McCauley on qualifying for the APA National Singles Championships to be held in May of 2012 in Las Vegas Nevada.

David was one of over 80 players participating in Vegas at the Regional tourna-ment on October 1st and 2nd. Winners of this event from all over the southwest region will be attending the National Event coming in May and held at the Riv-iera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. APA will provide each player with a room during their stay, Entry and table fees in the tournament, and travel assistance to get to Vegas.

Any APA player can qualify to participate in the National event by winning a lo-cal qualifier board, and then win at the Regional level with players of their own skill level.

Even with football in full swing, Groggy’s held their monthly scotch doubles tournament on October 1st with 11 teams determined to win their fair share of over $650 in prize money.

The hot seat match found Eric & Ricky Jones facing Dan Young & Davis Toothman. The winners of this match were Eric & Ricky in the hot seat.

After coming through the entire one loss side Bill Vanderweyst & Oscar Avila met Dan & Davis for 3rd place. A tough Hill-hill match found Dan & Davis taking 3rd place.

This set up the final match between Eric & Ricky against Bill & Oscar. In conclusion, Eric & Ricky took 1st place winning $ 450, while Bill & Oscar took home $ 135 for winning in 2nd place.

I would like to thank Leon and his staff for a great venue, good service and excellent food.

Joe Masi Wins Metro 7’s & Under

Joe Masi is known as a threat to snap off any tourney he enters, and he proved that once again on the weekend of October 22nd when he cruised through the field undefeated to win the Metro Sportz 7’s & Under monthly.

The match for the hot-seat was a lopsided 7-0 win for Masi over Larry Olsen.

Stinging from the loss, Olsen defeated Billy Coulston in the semi-final match 7-5, to earn another shot at Masi in the finals.

The final match saw Olsen only able to move three beads on the wire before Masi ended the match 7-3.

As strong as Masi played, he didn’t spend any money on side pots and it hurt him. Masi earned $465 for first, and Olsen coincidentally earned $465 for sec-ond place with the side pots. Coulston pocketed $165 for third and John Staton took home $55 for fourth.

Metro’s next monthly event will be 8’s and under 10-ball on November 18th - 19th.

Aaron & Bernie Unstoppable At The Ox

Fall is here and the fair is running, but that did not stop 20 scotch doubles teams from playing at The Ox on October 15th. Each teams believed they had a good chance to get their fair share of the over $1,100 in prize money.

The hot seat match found Aaron Scott & Bernie Papa vs. Chris Carpenter & Jim DiGrigorio. After several tense moments, Aaron and Bernie won the hot seat.

At the same time Dan Young & Leo Satterwhite fought their way through the loser bracket to face Chris & Jim for the 3rd place match.

Determined not to be denied, Dan & Leo defeated Chris & Jim. For their ef-forts, Chris & Jim took 3rd place and won $80.

This set up the match between Dan & Leo against Aaron & Bernie. Both teams were determined to win it all. When the dust settled, Aaron and Bernie took 1st and $680. Dan and Leo settled for second and $315.

As always, The Ox provided a great place to play, lots of fun and good service.

Bill & Salena Win Extra Ox Doubles Event

The 5 week month brought 19 scotch doubles teams back to The Ox on October 22nd to fi ght for their share of the $1,100 in prize money.

The hot seat match saw Salena & Bill face off against Chris Carpenter & Jim DiGrigorio. After great play and determination, Salena & Bill won the hot seat. Meanwhile, Steve & Andrew defeated Cathy & Melcher for 4th place.

After coming back through the one loss side, Steve & Andrew defeated Chris & Jim for their shot at Bill & Salena in the fi nals. For their efforts, Chris and Jim took 3rd place and $60.

The fi nal match was a showdown between Steve & Andrew and Bill & Salena. Both teams gave their best efforts in the match, but in the end, Bill & Salena took 1st and received $720, while Steve and Andrew took 2nd & received $335.

As always, The Ox provided a great place to play and good service.

On October 23rd - 25th, Bullshooters hosted the 10th Annual “Don Henson Classic” Dart tournament. This year, we honored many of our great dart player friends who were taken from us too early in life. It was a weekend to remember as five tournaments were played.

On Friday, we started out with a bang. Sixteen steel players and 58 soft tip shooters showed up to play. Bullshooters added $920 to the pots to make the payouts $1660 for the night.

During the day on Saturday, 72 players came out to play in the Main Event with $700 in added money from Bullshooters to make the payout $1700. More of the same came Saturday night with 46 players, $640 in added money and a total payout of $1,100.

Sunday, the skills turned to the old school game of steel tip darts and 28 players came to show off their skills. With the $320 in added money, the payout was an even $600.

The tally for the weekend was 220 entries, $2,580 in added money and $5,060 in payouts for the weekend. More important is that the combined raffles netted $1,600 for Logan Sinclair (a four year old boy battling Cancer), $340 for the Desert Kaos 12U Girls softball team who purchased raffle prizes for the team as well as Logan, and $100 will be given to the son of Brian Mann, the 2011 “Don Henson Award Winner”.

Over $2,000 was raised by our great dart community. The winners of each event are important, but everyone who there that weekend are the real winners as they got to visit with friends, tell stories about our great friends and share a toast in their honor. Thanks to all who came out, and say an extra prayer for Logan in his journey to recovery.

The award is in the honor of a great friend and great dart player, Don Henson, who lost his battle with Leu-kemia about 10 years ago. Don brought “Class, Dignity and Sportsmanship” to the highest level.

All Don did for darts in Arizona is show us how the game was played with Class, Dignity and Sportsmanship. He was the picture of all three. Don taught me that you don’t demand respect, you earn it. Don would walk into a room, and it seemed that everything was then all right. Don would walk in, tap you on the back, shake your hand, and things always felt lots better. He wasn’t just a champion dart player, but a cham-pion in life. When he faced the biggest chal-lenge of his life, he met it head on and didn’t waiver. When the leukemia set in, he didn’t do what most of us would do and ask “Why me?”. Instead, He said “Better me than my friends or family”. I can’t even start to explain the impact Mr. Don Henson had on my life. I just want all of you to know that I was blessed to be his friend. I have played darts with and against many great people, and my biggest honor was to play darts for many years with Don Henson.

How can you write about one of these guys without including the other? The 80’s and 90’s was a soft tip revolution in Arizona, and these two gentlemen were at the forefront. Whether it was at Tommy’s, Black Bull, Cheers Too, Back Tracks and more, they were always there. They both had a passion for the game and for the people who played it. Mick was the quiet one who went about his business, playing darts and doing his thing. Johnny had a laugh and a voice that rang out across the whole bar. One thing is for certain, they were both always there and when they left us, there was definitely a void in the Arizona dart world. Not too many people in this world are recognized by one name, but if you said Mick or Mac, there was never any doubt who you were talking about. Arizona darts are lots better because of these two great men who helped to lead the way.

Wow, what a shock when we lost these two great friends. So tragic, they were both full of life. I met Mike at the Benchwarmer in 1981 and Gail

shortly after. And for nearly 30 years, they were my friends. Mike loved Nascar, motorcycles and darts. Gail loved Nascar, motorcycles and Karaoke. OK, darts too, sometimes. They loved what each other loved, moreover, they loved each other. They had a great life together at races, darts, Karaoke, football games and more. They were always doing something. Mike was in the Masters A, the first season we had it. He told me afterwards that he wanted to play in the Minor Masters because it was too serious in the A division. He had fun playing and didn’t take anything too serious. They both were on an even line; nothing was ever too good or too bad. Mike would come watch us play Masters, and loved how great the players were. Most of us want to be the best and what we do; Mike just wanted to have fun. They are truly missed and I think about them often.

Chuck Timmerman

Most of you didn’t know Chuck, but if you were a good dart player you did. In the early 90’s, John Gray was thought of as the best in Phoenix. I remember the first time I met Chuck at the Tee Kee Tee banquet; they introduced him as the “John Gray of the Eastside”. The next year I got to play in Vegas with Chuck, Don Hen-son and Dan Wilson. That was our team for three years, and three years in a row we finished second in Masters. (Not a bad run) I couldn’t have asked to play with three better men. Chuck not only proved he could play with the big boys on the Westside, but that he could hold his own with the rest of the world in soft tip darts. He was a great friend and as solid a teammate as you could ask for. On a side note, I met Chuck’s family in 1992 and now I have the pleasure of seeing his son Corey in the Masters League.

Brian Mann

Talk about a shock. After spending two hours talking to Brian about darts and how he got started and why he played - the next day he was gone. Brian is this year’s recipient of the Don Henson Award and anyone who thinks he got it just because he was taken from us is wrong. He had class and a want to get better and better. I had the pleasure of playing with Brian in his first big tournament at Stardust with 94 players. We took second, but even better, about seven years later I found out that playing with me that day made him want to play darts. He said he was ready to hang it up, but he learned so much and had such a good time, that he was sold on

the game. He was sold on the game and the rest of us were sold on Brian Mann as a great man. He is everything that the Don Henson Awards stands for.

Kim Shasteen

Another young person taken away too early. Many don’t know how passionate Kim was about her darts and dart players. When things were at a lull in the west Valley, Kim helped to rejuvenate darts. As the owner of Stingers, she transformed the bar into a dart bar, and gave the Westside something that was missing with all the other bars going in other directions. She believed in darts and even after she sold Stingers, she continued to promote the game. Whether it was Marino’s, Big Daddy’s or The Other Room; Kim pushed them along with darts. I know she also supported Rick and Julie at The Ox and helped them become the place to play darts in the East Valley. Her fiery personality is already missed among the dart players and the bars that she played at. Darts around the valley are better because Kim was a part of them.

Ron Schultz

What can I say about Ron Schultz? Ron seldom gets the credit due to him for making Arizona darts what they are today. He not only played and was instrumental in bringing our teams to NDA while with Tee Kee Tee Darts, but he moved on to Troy Vending and put darts on the map. He helped me get the Masters league going, built mixed leagues, got tournaments started in the West and East val-leys and was a part of the early 1990’s soft tip revolution. He loved the game and more so, the players in it. Because of his tireless efforts, darts in Arizona are what they are today. I am sorry that he was taken from us before many of our new players had a chance to meet him and thank him for what he did.

The people above all made a difference in darts and in our lives. There are many more steel and soft tip players that are no longer with us. I mean to disre-spect in not including them. Only that you remem-ber those people in your life that made a differ-ence; for life is too short and as we have found out, it can change in a minute. Please celebrate the lives of all our friends this weekend.

Mike, I notice that as some dart players get older, their skills seem to go down a little and others get better. I know your league stats have slipped a little. What are your feelings on this?

Wow, mine have slipped a little? Are you kidding? More like they fell into the Grand Canyon!

Right now two words explain my league play, “I Suck!”.

It is what it is. I believe you call a spade a spade. Will it come back? I have no doubt. Do I know what the problem is? Most of it. I have no excus-es, it is on me to make it better.

Chicago Bob has 10 years on me and is throwing excellent, maybe not as consistent, but still shooting well. Scooter is getting up there and is play-ing the best he has ever played. Tom Slivka had a fall off, but is on the road back.

Many great players stay that way well into their 60’s, so I don’t think age is that important.

Larry Ennis is shooting great and is coming off major surgery a short time ago. Rich Finn and Brad Halley have found their games and continue to shoot great. John Gray is battling his darts, like I am.

It used to be so easy and now we are making it harder. Using a Yogi Berra

analogy, 50% of darts is skill and the other 90% is mental.

Yes, right now I am a mental midget and that’s the bottom line. I hear ev-erything, see people five boards over at the board, and half the time I barely look at what I am throwing at.

I used to pride myself in having the strongest mental game there was. I felt I could beat you just because of that reason. Now I beat myself, John is do-ing the same, and so was Tom.

We are at the point that when we miss, we try harder, this is never the answer. You try harder, grip the dart more, short arm your throw and the results are inevitable, YOU SUCK!!

So two things to do are practice and

have fun. Practice will bring confidence and having fun will get you away from being pissed at your game.

This is how I see it

Well I have been a bit lazy on the blog but I think it is only good to write something worth writing about... SANDBAGGING!

Now many people who read this will have no idea how this ties into DARTS as they play steel tip darts. Steel tip is about “do what you do and work hard enough to move up the ranks”.

In SOFT-TIP darts there are players - sadly too many players - that think by cheat-ing, aka SANDBAGGING, that they can go to major dart tournaments and win because they have gotten a handicap or rating they just plain don’t deserve.

Thus they play against lower rated players than they normal-ly would so that they feel they have a better shot at winning.

This is not exclusive to darts... it’s in golf, bowling and pool. I

played a golf tourney years ago as a 10 Handicap and after day two; the leader in my division was at par!!! Do you think he wins respect?? HELL NO!!

I mean, even if he was shooting good he should be like +14 - +16 right?? So what is this player doing? CHEAT-ING to win something that really has no value because everyone there is looking at you saying “SANDBAG-GER” or if they have a backbone, “CHEATER”.

Now the response I get when I call someone out on it?? “Everyone does it” or “ “I don’t like the guy that runs it”. So does that make it ok????

HELL NO!!!! NOT EVERYONE DOES IT!!!! You do not CHEAT the guy running it - you cheated all the honest players!!!! I will lose every day doing my best, but never NEVER will I throw a game, throw a dart off nor allow another to win that does not deserve it. PERIOD!!! I started years ago and re-rated myself up in soft tip because I knew I was better than what I ended up.

How did I know? Well, long story but the short version is that I bet the #1 guy 8 games straight for money and asked “what are you rated?” I was 6 points under him!!! I called the gov-erning body and said “I need to be a 17” They replied” No one does this..” I replied ” I do not care what everyone else does, I just beat the best guy for money and I realize I am handicapped wrong”. They said “well you can be a 15”

So I go to my first real dart shoot they ran. Rerated to a 17 at the end like I had asked!! So can I throw stones? Yes, because in the History of Medalist I am the only player to my knowledge (and yes I asked again this week) that has ever asked to be re-rated up.

My long winded soap box point?

Sandbagging is real is a nice word for cheating.. you cheat yourself, you cheat your fellow players and you cheat the beginner. If you want to win SOOOO BAD, then practice, practice some more, play tournaments and then enter the highest level possible and

win.

THEN YOU ARE A WINNER. And then you can say WORLD CHAMPION and mean it.

All I ask all of you is this, Have pride in what you do!!! Have respect for the game!!!! Do what you do and do what you need to do to be the best. Do not short cut it.. Do not under-mind the proccess.

If I have offended you, then this is for you!!

Play darts, pool, golf or bowl-ing fairly and be who you are!!!

Fast Lenny Wins Preacher Ronn’s Event

The last weekend of the month in October could only mean one thing; it was time for one pocket at Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket event held at Kolby’s in Tempe.

Eighteen players came out for this one, including such notables as Scott Frost, Gus Briseno, Bernie Pettipiece, Mike Pankoff, Eric Young and Tres Kane.

The hot-seat went to Preacher Ronn, after a lightning quick 2-0 win over “Fast” Lenny Marshall.

One on the one loss side, Lenny found Mike Pankoff (fresh off of a 2-0 win over Eric Young). Pankoff was playing strong this weekend, but Marshall was a little stronger as he scored a 2-0 win to send Pankoff in search of action on near-by tables. Marshall more than redeemed himself for the hot-seat loss to Ronn, as he won three straight games in the extended race finals for the 3-0 win.

Lenny pocketed $300 first (no side pot), while Ronn earned $290 for second (with side pot). Pankoff collected $90 and Young took home $50 for fourth.

Briseno wins at One Pocket Madness

Bullshooters in Phoenix held their One Pocket Madness event on October 15th with a field of fourteen players.

The hot-seat in this one was won by Rod Elliott, with a win over tournament director Tres Kane.

On the one loss side, Gus Briseno was mowing them down even with the handi-cap he had to give each player he played. Briseno gave Kane 11-8 and 10-8 in the semi-finals and won 2-1.

The spot in the finals was Briseno giving Elliott 11-7 in an extended race to three, and once again Briseno won; this time the score of 3-2.

Briseno won $330 with side pot for first, while Elliott settled for $150 in second place prize money. Kane won $100 and fourth place went to Sam Martinez for $40.

The November One Pocket Madness will be on the twelfth.

Briseno wins in Tucson too

The Desert Classic Tour was at Pockets in Tucson on the weekend of October 22nd-23rd for big table 9-ball and Gus Briseno proved that he is just as danger-ous in Tucson as he is in Phoenix.

Briseno was undefeated through the field, with a 7-6 come from behind win over tournament director George Teyechea. Teyechea led the match 5-1, but was unable to notch the case game against Briseno.

On the one loss side, Mike Hamman was having a great run with wins over Pete Lhotka and Bret Huth. Teyechea was the next victim for Hamman with a 6-4 scoreline.

The finals saw Briseno cruise to an early 6-2 lead en route to a 7-4 win over Hamman in the first set of the finals.

Briseno earned $865 for the win, while Hamman took home $460. Teyechea won $250 and Brett Huth won $150. 5th place went to Dennis Orender and Rick Galloway for $100 each.

I know there has been much written about proper pool etiquette over the years, but I don’t recall anything that has covered the type of etiquette that I want to talk about here. The etiquette I will discuss is a little different than the usual avoidances of direct distrac-tions to shooting players; this type of etiquette speaks of acts that are affronts to all serious students of the game, only the affronts come from an indirect approach.

The “etiquette” (or lack there-of) I am talking about is the disregard that a few pool play-ers have for the preservation of the owner-supplied equipment (primarily the tables) and the overall harmony that might otherwise be achieved in the

room if it were not for the poor train-ing of its practitioners.

Let’s start with the powder monsters. These are the guys who think they not only have to have powder all over their hands; but they somehow think it be-longs all over their arms, elbows, and pool table too. Why do they do that? Do they even know what powder is for? Good players don’t even use the stuff – they keep their hands and cues clean and dry and/or use other methods to reduce cue drag. All powder does is make an ugly mess that someone else has to clean up. So, powder monsters, PLEASE STOP!

Next we have the guy who looks like a real player when he fi rst walks into the poolroom: he carries his own cue and he rents one of the nicest tables in the place. But then he goes and snitches himself off when he takes the tray

of balls and dumps them all over the table. This smooth move is not only irritating to all serious players in the room; it is also a major annoyance to the owner of the place. Why? Because the players and owner both know that it’s more than the noise that’s the major problem; it’s the damage that’s being done to the cloth on the table. You see, every time a ball bounces on a pool table it crushes the fi bers of the cloth and leaves a tiny divot. These tiny divots are then weak spots that will eventually become premature holes and tears as they continue to be pounded by uncaring players.

Ball dumpers are not the only cloth murderers to be found in the poolroom, however. We also have the guys who constantly think they have to show the fancy stuff. They haven’t even learned to shoot a straight in shot on a consis-tent basis, but yet they never hesitate

to jack up and attempt to pound out a masse’ or jump shot. The problem here is again that of pounding divots into the cloth; not to mention the danger of a rip if the tip of the cue goes through the ball too far.

The things I’ve mentioned here might be considered nit-picky to some, but I assure you they are very annoying to serious players. That’s because seri-ous players know that they will have to play on the dirty and damaged tables until the room owner has enough money to have them recovered. Ag-gravating annoyances such as these are avoidable if the of-fenders will simply learn a little more about good pool etiquette.

When Kolbys announced their player prize fund fi nale would be a $1000 added Wild Ball event on the weekend of September 25th, it certainly got the players attention. A fi eld of 52 play-ers came out to grab for their share of the prize money. The fi eld was a cross section of play-ers in the Valley with ratings ranging from a 5 (Joshua Garcia) to a 10-1 (Mitch Ellerman).

Players who were not able to cash in this one in-cluded Bernie Pettipiece, Chuck Evans, Preacher Ronn, Ray Robles and Brad Johnson.

Although he did cash in the event, Mitch Eller-man (the top rated player in the event) lost to Ryan Mayes on the winners side and then Mike Sandoval on the one loss side to send Ellerman home in 4th place.

The hot-seat match came down to Gus Briseno and Ryan Mayes. Gus, a 10 rated player, was giving Ryan, a 9 rated player, the wild 8. That turned out to be a pretty even spot as Briseno eked out a 7-6 win for the hot-seat.

The semi-fi nal match saw Mayes taking on Mike Sandoval in a straight race to six. This match stayed close, but Mayes pulled out the 6-4 win.

The fi nal match was a rematch of the hot-seat match with Briseno taking on Mayes again, giv-ing up the wild 8.

Mayes came out strong this time and took an early 3-0 lead, but Briseno quickly righted his sinking ship and tied the match at 3-3. A 9-Ball break gave Briseno his fi rst lead at 4-3, but a missed 8-ball by Briseno in rack eight tied the match back up at 4-4. Briseno once again took the lead at 5-4, but another late miss in rack ten

allowed Mayes to knot the score again at 5-5.

Briseno got the hill fi rst at 6-5, but it looked as if Mayes would join him there as he was running the twelfth rack. Mayes tried to get too perfect on an 8-ball and hooked himself on the edge of the side pocket. He studied the shot trying to fi nd some solution to the dilemma, but it was for naught as he was unable to contact the 8-ball and he gave up ball in hand to Briseno. Briseno wasted no time pocketing the fi nal two balls for the tournament win.

With all of the side pots, Briseno pocketed $1,185 for fi rst, while Mayes settled for $505 and the memories of what could have been.

Briseno wins Wild Ball Tourney at Kolby’s

Saturday, October 8th, at Stinger’s in Glendale, was the place to be for women’s 8-ball on the ten Diamond 7’ tables. It was the fifth stop on the 2011 Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour, but the first time that Stinger’s had held an event. Owner’s Dale Hanson & Dana Micelli and staff, were more than willing to accommodate all of our needs. Stinger’s is a very spacious room with twelve 7’ tables, great food and a full bar to settle the nerves. In addition, between matches, you could partake in off-track betting, social poker, or watch sports on the many large screens throughout the bar.

Saturday began with 21 gals playing 8-ball us-ing BCAPL rules. The races were to 5 on the winner’s side and race to 3 on the loser’s. The women’s play was excellent all day with many run-outs on the ‘tight pocketed’ tables. When the balls did tie up the players used skillful but aggressive tactics to open things up and the matches moved along rapidly. This delighted the tournament director who had visions of 45 min-ute games with lots of bunting on the last three balls. Congratulations to the entire field on some great 8-ball play.

The final four on the winner’s side Sunday had Arizonan Susan Williams trying to make her way through three road partners from Las Vegas, Stacy Allsup, Sondra Faith, and Rebecca Wag-ner. Stacy beat Susan 5-2 but lost the hot seat match 5-2 to Rebecca who had beaten Sondra 5-2 earlier.

On the B side, because the matches had moved so swiftly on Saturday, the race was increased to 4 instead of 3. This allowed the players a little more room to get into their matches. Newcomer, Jaye Succo, had wins over Jodie Villegas 4-3 and

Sondra Faith 4-0, with Son-dra finishing 5th-6th. Terri Johnson-McCauley came back to the AWBT this year driving in from Farmington, New Mexico. She had a 4-1 win over Sara Miller, but was unable to get past Susan Wil-liams, losing 4-2 and placing 5th/6th. Congratulations to Jaye Succo of Sacaton, AZ, for a super 4th place finish in her first AWBT event.

Susan, with her win over Jaye, now faced the two ladies, Rebecca and Stacy, that between them, have won all four prior 2011 AWBT events. In a tense match, Susan won 4-2 over Stacy. Another great finish for Stacy, who in 4 tournaments has two 1st’s, a 3rd and a 5th place finish. The final match was rather anti-climactic as Rebecca won 6-4 and claimed her third title of the year! For Susan there is always next month at Bullshooters and a chance to break the stranglehold these ladies from Las Vegas have put on the AWBT this year.

The 2nd Chance Tournament was won by newcomer Cindy Yazzie, also from Farmington, New Mexico. Leandrea Gaff won 2nd place money. Thanks to all the ladies who came back on Sunday to play in the 2nd Chance Tournament!

Congratulations to Jodie Villegas who said it was the first time in seven years that she has made the final 8.

George Bell came back to Kitty’s a week after his scotch doubles win (see article below) and proved that he is just as strong a singles player as he is a scotch player.

match to Johnny Garcia early in the event.

Garcia went on play for the hot-seat, where he lost to Dennis Winkler 6-3.

On the one loss side, Garcia found Bell waiting with vengeance on his mind. The semi-final match stayed close the entire time, with Bell pulling out a hill-hill win to set up the finals between Bell and Winkler.

The first set of the double elimination finals was close with the players tied at 2-2, but Bell took off from there and won the match 7-4.

The second set of the finals saw Dennis come on strong at the start. Winkler held leads at 4-2 and 5-4, before Bell took control and won the match 7-5.

With side pots, George won $300 for first place, while Winkler settled for $90 in second place prize money with no side pots. Garcia found himself winning $110 for third place with side pots. Not bad for third place.

Asian Connection at Kitty’s

With fall here and the 100 degree days begining to wane, Kitty held her monthly scotch tournament on September 24th. Each team was determined to get their fair share of the $ 500 in prize money.

The hot seat match found Steve Henderson & Curtis Neal battling Hopell Ampongan & George Bell (The Asian Connection). This match concluded with Hopell & George winning the hot seat.

After coming through the one loss side, Jack Mayer & Mike Stafford met Steve & Curtis for 3rd place. This Hill-hill match found Steve & Curtis taking 3rd place.

This set up the final match of the day. Jack & Mike pitted against Hopell & George. In the end this hill-hill match found Hopell & George in 1st place and Jack & Mike in 2nd place. For their efforts, Hopell & George took home $ 320, and Jack & Mike took home $ 160.

As always, Kitty provided a great venue and service.

Vander Weyst and Avilla Win at Skip & Jans

The jam packed October 8th weekend of pool found 10 very strong teams vying for $ 700 in prize money at the Skip & Jan’s 16 & Under Scotch Doubles event.

The hot seat match found Terry Tucker & Derek Cumm, from Yuma, facing Marvin Lawson & Marvin Jones. After an intense few moments, Marvin & Marvin found themselves in the hot seat.

The 3rd place match pitted Derek & Terry against Bill Vanderweyst & Oscar Avilla. This hill-hill match found Terry & Derek taking 3rd place and Oscar & Bill moving on to meet Marvin and Marvin in the finals.

In the battle for 1st, Oscar & Bill won the first set. This set up an exciting match to determine the final winner. After many good shots and strong play, Bill & Oscar took 1st and Marvin & Marvin were forced to settle for 2nd.

For their efforts, Marvin & Marvin took home $ 210 while Bill & Oscar re-ceived $ 450.

I would like to thank Skip and Jan’s for a great venue, good service and excel-lent food.

Does size matter?

Of course, I am referring to a pool table and the question does size matter for improving your game?

I am going to address a few questions my students ask me when they are thinking of pur-chasing a table for their home.

First, when a student asks me since they cannot fit a 4.5 X 9 foot table into their home should they even get one at all? Second, does playing on a bigger table make you a better player? Third, how do they fig-ure out what size of table will fit inside their homes?

The answer to the first two questions is having any size ta-ble helps your game. The main factor in game improvement is correct practice and any table inside your home will equal to more hours on the table.

Trying to figure out which table

size will fit comfortably in a house is tricky. The website http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/helpful_in-formation/room_size_requirements.html has a helpful chart for figuring out what you will need for each sized table. Another great way is to cut out a piece of cardboard 4.5 feet wide and 9 feet long and then place it inside the desired area and this makes for a great visual template.

In the end, size does not matter since the goal is to have fun and improve your pool game with family and friends.
