Next up, was the BCA Nationals at the Riviera May 11th - 22nd. The Open Scotch Doubles division drew a field of 338 teams, but that didn’t phase Bernie and new partner Jesse Renteria. Store and Renteria had agreed to play together two months before the event and had not been able to get together and practice once before the event. Their first match together as Scotch partners took place in the first round of the event. That match was a 4-0 win for the team of Arizona, and they never looked back. It wasn’t until their 4th match that they even let an opponent get to the hill against them; and that only happened twice. Store and Renteria’s match for the hot- seat was against another Arizona team, Chris Paradowski and Lois Schmitt from Tucson. That match went to Store and Renteria 4-1. The final match was also against the team from Tucson, and that match was very similar to the first, with Bernie and Jessie winning 4-2 for the undefeated run through the event and another $3,200 in prize money. One half of the second place team, Chris Paradowski, commented after the match, “I don’t remember Bernie or Jesse missing at all in the hot seat match. They played really strong. In the Finals they appeared human, com- ing up short on shape a couple times. Unfortunately, I missed a couple shots to tie things up and they took advan- tage. Bernie and Jesse played a great tournament and deserved the 1st place prize. They were also great sportsmen, good folks to play”. Not sure you can get higher praise from an opponent after a win than that. Bernie did stay in Vegas for the BCA Open Ladies 8-Ball event, but did not perform as well, finishing out of the money. Store Doubles Down In VegasArizona, and especially Phoenix, is bar-table coun-try. On any given weekend, there are a handful of good sized bar-table tournaments for the Arizona players to compete in. Man, there are a lot of tournaments in Arizona. It isn’t until you take the time to try to get out and cover as many as you can, that you really notice how many there are. Couple new pool tournaments in the tournament guide from Skip & Jan’s, Raceway Bar & Grill and Harry’s Last Call. Check out the tournament guide for those listings. You will also notice ads for two big pool tourneys and one big dart event coming soon. The World Tournament of 14.1 is coming up and the only West Coast qualifier will be at Skip & Jan’s in August. Should be a lot of fun to watch that one. The BCA SW Regional is in September. I hear there will be some good changes this year. For all of you dart players, the Old Pueblo Dart Classic is in Tucson this month and Stingers is back in the monthly dart tournament business. Check out their ads for more details. Until next month...

Brad Schilling went undefeated through a field of 26 other players to win the Metro Sportz Bar 7’s & Under 8-Ball event on May 28th.

Schilling beat Tom Fair for the hot-seat 2-0 and was able to rest up and wait on his opponent in the finals.

That opponent would be Jerry Thissle, who defeated Fair 3-1 in the semi-finals.

The final match would see Thissle going to three, while Schilling only had to win two games. It wouldn’t matter as Schilling won the match 2-1 without the handicap.

Schilling took home $195 for first, while Thissle settled for $70.

Thomas “Tommy Gun” Leutz & “Crash” Redding teamed up to defeat Hopell Ampon-gan & Rico Gonza-lez to win the Metro Sportz Bar June Scotch Doubles Event.

Leutz & Redding took the hot-seat with a 9-7 win & Hopell and Rico. Most fans might think that a match couldn’t get much closer than that. These teams would prove those fans wrong later in the event.

On the one loss side, the team of John Romo & Chris Carpenter were taking advantage of a fortuitous meeting on Saturday morning. Both players arrived at Metro expecting their partners to join them; and both players were stood up by their partners. No problem for these two as they teamed up, and after losing their first match, beat five teams on the one loss side. That run was ended by Hopell & Rico 9-2; and we had a rematch in the finals.

The first set of the finals saw Hopell & Rico race out to a 5-0 lead, but then be forced to watch Leutz & Redding come right back to tie the match at 7-7. Hopell & Rico would win the match 9-8 and the players started conferring to discuss what looked like a possible split. That wasn’t the case this time though, as it was actually Leutz & Redding asking if their opponents wanted to play the second set for first and second place combined! How about that confidence? The offer was refused, and the second set got underway.

The final set started like the previous set, with Hopell & Rico racing to a 4-0 lead. Next, it was Leutz & Redding coming back to tie the match at 5-5. Hopell & Rico then won three games for the hill-5 lead, but sure enough, Leutz & Red-ding came back to win three games, tie the score at 8-8, and then win the case game for the tourney win.

Leutz & Redding earned $665 for first place, while Hopell & Rico took home $260 for second. Romo & Carpenter won $135 for third.

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday June 3, 2011.

Russ Thompson captured the hot seat with a 2-1 win over Tom Leutz.

Paul Vasi played Tom Leutz and finished in 3rd place after losing to Tom hill-hill. Tom came back from the one loss side beating Russ 2-0 in the 1st set and 2-0 in the second set to capture the 1st place title.

Congratulations to Tom Leutz for a $160.00 1st place finish. Russ Thompson took a 2nd place finish of $80.00 and Paul Vasi took home $20.00 for 3rd place.

Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday July 8, 2011.

Saturday, June 11th, the AWBT stopped into “Kitty’s Lounge” for a weekend of ladies bar table 9-ball. Located in the Central Phoenix area, Kitty’s has been a longtime tournament spon-sor and home to a women’s BCA National 8-ball Championship team.

Eighteen ladies from Arizona and Nevada made up the field. The game: 9-ball - Race to 7. The AWBT uses an alternate break format using the “Magic Rack”. Owner/player Kitty Car-roll, that for her big day of host-ing, she would show up with a pulled muscle in her leg. It was painful to watch her tend to her duties as bar manger and then limp over and try to play com-petitive pool. When she was sent to the losers side in round 3 by Leandrea Gaff, it looked like her day might be mercifully over early. Instead she showed a lot of grit in beating a strong Justine Bishop with the tournaments most amazing run out 7-5. She then beat Pat Shultz to make it to Day 2 on Sunday.

Early tournament fa-vorites Susan Williams and Las Vegan Stacy Allsup met in round 3. This match went 5-5 and then

6-6. But in the 13th rack Stacy miscued and missed a one ball. Susan ran out the rack for the win. Susan then beat Sara Miller 7-5 to reach the Sunday winners bracket final.

In the other winners bracket semi-final, Diana Clayton faced Leandrea Gaff. No player was able to lead by more than one game as the match seesawed back and forth to 6-6. Diana had won the lag and therefore the last break. She made a ball on the break, made the one ball and then she faced a table length 3-9 billiard. She saddled up and rode the 9 to end this very entertaining match.

Sunday saw the return of 6 players. Two on the winners, four on the losers. Kitty showed up refreshed and without the pain in her leg. Unfortunately her game vanished too. She was beaten by AWBT favorite, and birthday girl, Sara Miller 7-2 and finished 5th-6th.

In the other loser’s semi-final, Leandrea Gaff was shooting her way to a 4-1 lead and appeared to be headed for an easy win. But then the match changed. Stacy, who can nightly be seen playing one-pocket at Pool Sharks in Las Vegas, started playing hide-n-seek with the cue ball. This allowed her to get ball-in-hand for a 3-9 combination and then win game seven by three-fouling Leandrea. This strategy change seemed to take Leandrea out of her rhythm and she never won an-other game. In the end Stacy won 7-4 and Leandrea finished 5th-6th.

The matchup for third and fourth appeared to be a pickem. With the match close, Sara Miller missed two easy nine balls which gave Stacy all the breathing room she would need rolling to a 7-4 win and Sara finished 4th.

In the winners final, Diana Clay-ton’s concentration seemed to fade when she needed it the most at 5-5. She began to miss the long tough shots that had helped her to get to this match. Susan Williams, a many time AWBT champ, seized the op-portunities and won 7-5. Stacy made quick work of Diana, 7-1, to make the finals and a rematch with Susan Williams. Congratu-lations to Diana for a strong 3rd place finish.

The final was one race to nine with Susan breaking first. She was hav-ing trouble making balls on the break and was trailing 3-5. She appeared to change her break location and while addressing the ball she fouled. This gave Stacy a bonus break. She broke, made a ball and then had an early 2-9 combo to go up 6-3. Susan was never really able to recover as Stacy cruised to a 9-5 win and the cham-pionship. Congratulations to Stacy Allsup for her exciting play and great champion

ship. Congratulations to Susan Williams for her ‘sportswoman-ship’ and another great finish.

Thanks to all the ladies who came out and especially to those who traveled from out of town. Thanks to Kitty Carroll for hosting this event and adding the money to the prize fund. Thanks to our secret spon-sor who added another $100 to this event, and to all future events for 2011 season. We encourage this behavior and hope more indi-viduals will help sponsor our tour. Way to go Pat Shultz who cashed in 7th place. Our next event is at Pock-ets in Tucson, August 6th & 7th. Bring a friend or two and come down and play!

Jose Parica is widely known in the pool world as “The Leader of the Invasion” as he was the first Filipino player to bring their pool playing abilities to the US. Over the weekend of June 18th and 19th, it was Arizona that Parica was invading to show off his one pocket abilities at the Des-ert Classic Tour’s Arizona State One Pocket Championship, held at Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe, Az.

One Pocket is a very popular game at Kolby’s, due in part to the efforts of former Derby City One Pocket Champion Scott Frost and “Preacher” Ronn Rutan; so it was no surprise to see a field of 31 players at the event.

As the tournament chart would have it, Parica faced off against Frost in the second round of the event. The match went hill-hill with Frost coming back from a 2-0 deficit, only to lose the case game to Parica.

After the win over Frost, Parica would cruise on to the hot-seat match where he faced young gun Bobby Emmons. Emmons has never met a shot he doesn’t like, and it showed in their match as Emmons “fired at will”, making shots from everywhere on the way to a quick 3-1 win.

Meanwhile, Frost was in unfamil-iar territory as he made his way through the one loss side of the brackets. Never-theless, he still found his way to a rematch with Parica in the semi-finals. To Frost’s dismay, he would not be winning this State Championship as Parica sent him to the rail with a 3-0 scoreline.

The final match between Parica and sharpshooting Emmons started out with Emmons still in gear and making balls from everywhere to take a quick 1-0 lead in the extended race to 5. After that first game, the pool gods turned their back on Emmons and those shots that he liked earlier in the day showed that they weren’t as friendly with the title on the line. Em-mons missed a couple of shots and that was all that the pool veteran Parica needed to take control of the match. From that point, Parica put on a clinic in One Pocket tactics and Emmons found himself fall-ing deeper and deeper behind. Five games later, it was Parica with the 5-1 win and yet another Championship to add to his impressive resume.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News July 2011

Something has been missing from league pool. That missing something is quite important, too.

When we think of league pool, we generally think of team competition. Team pool might differ from many other sports in the fact that there are only two players involved in every game − one from the “home” team, and one from the “visitors” team − but aside from that there should be few other differences; or at least that’s what one would think. Instead, when it comes to pool, the concept of performing as a team seems to get pushed aside in favor of pursuits for indi-vidual glories.

It hasn’t always been this way. In the beginning, pool teams were formed from people who became friends with other people who enjoyed playing pool against each other in their favorite local bar. Over time they developed a desire to test themselves against like-minded people outside their own realm, so they started issuing challenges to neighbor-ing bars to put together teams to see who had the best players. For the individual players, this process involved taking pride in being chosen as a member of a team, and also taking pride in representing the bar that the team played for. It also in-volved the owner taking pride in the team(s) that represented his or her establishment. Heck, sometimes the owners, them-selves, were even members of the teams. In other words, it all amounted to a total team effort.

As the number of team challenges increased, the need for organized leagues in-creased. Leagues then started cropping up in cities all across the country. Incentives grew for players as bar owners sought to attract their business by supply-ing them with team shirts and providing them with free drinks on league nights. League play seemed to be good for every-body involved, and over time, most leagues went from being small, localized organizations, to being affiliates of large, na-tional networks.

Then, as players be-came more competent and competitive, the team concept started to fade. League players started buying tables of their own so they could practice at home, rather than spending

time and money at the bar they repre-sented. Stronger players were recruited by captains of teams from other bars, thus breaking up long-standing rela-tionships with bar owners and friends. Even the weaker players began looking for greener pastures, going wherever they could get the best deal from the bar owner. After a while, so many players were changing locations so often that it became bad business for the bar owners to keep supplying their teams with shirts. It was at that point that genuine teamwork, a sense of belonging, and growth from within, all became things of the past.

If we look around for the best example of genuine teamwork, we might be surprised to find that it exists in that highly successful organization called, NASCAR. Within that well respected institute there may be star drivers, but every one of those drivers must race for a team that is made up of sponsors, owners, pit crews, me-chanics, and administrators. No one is ever disassociated from their team in NASCAR’s advertisements and promotions because no single person could ever be successful without all the rest of the team. It’s a total team effort that makes NASCAR work, and it works very well − especially when it comes to selling the sport to the gen-eral public. For proof of this, just look at NASCAR’s popularity. It’s colorful. It’s exciting. It’s entertaining. It’s mar-ketable. And it’s going to be around for a long time to come.

And it is after NASCAR’s model that one pool team − The AZB Boys out of Bull Shooters Billiards in Phoenix − has decided to pattern itself.

The AZB Boys formed in 2009 from a group of long-time player/friends who had the goal in mind to qualify their team for the BCAPL Nationals in Las Vegas. The group selected its particular name because one of its members is Mike Howerton, owner of AZBilliards.com, the world’s most popular billiards website. Forum users on AZBilliards commonly refer to Mike’s site as “AZB,” hence the name, AZB Boys. (Mike also recently re-acquired ownership of the Arizona Billiard and Dart News, which conve-niently fits the team’s name, as well.)

Playing in an in-house league at Stinger’s in Glendale, AZ for their first season together as AZB Boys, things didn’t quite work out for the team to be able to make it to the 2010 Nationals. But late in 2010, the team joined the Arizona Hot Shots, a Phoe-nix-based BCAPL sanctioned league, and at the same time acquired sponsor-ship from Mike Bates and Len Orlan-do, the owners of Bull Shooters − the largest, and arguably the best, pool and dart room in the southwest − and at that point, prospects for the AZB Boys

making it to the 2011 Nationals started looking very good..

After making a couple of player changes (moves that were initiated by the departing players), the AZB Boys wound up with its current roster of (listed in order of tenure): Roger Long (me), Trevor Long (my son), Mike Howerton, Randy Thomp-son, Chuck Parrill, Doc Rogers, and Bill McGavisk. This is a well seasoned group of players. The youngest on the team is Trevor, but still, his league experience dates back to 1990.

One of the main requirements to play on our team is an understand-ing that we are representatives for our sponsor(s) first and foremost, and that we play primarily to promote their business and to put their welfare ahead of our own personal concerns. And in return for that commitment, Bull Shooters has rewarded our team by providing us with beautiful (and expensive) team shirts to wear to all of the large tournaments that we compete in.

I can now happily report that the AZB Boys made a successful trip to the 2011 BCAPL Nationals in Las Vegas in May. We didn’t win the tournament, but we did finish in the top 20% of that 618-team field, which put us two rounds into the money and kept our team’s name and our spon-sor’s name circulating for quite a spell. (We had registered our team as “’Bull Shooter’s’ AZB Boys” in order to let the world know that we are proud to represent that fine establishment.) Furthermore, our team shirts garnered many compliments from other play-ers and gave us the opportunity to tell them about Bull Shooters and AZBil-liards.com. And that, to us and to our sponsors, spells success.

This article is not meant for the purpose of exalting the AZB Boys, although that may seem to be the case. The real purpose is to offer a couple examples of what can be done to

improve relationships between league teams and their sponsor-ing bars and pool rooms. This article is one of those exam-ples, as it provides another way for me to pay back my team’s sponsors. Now you may not be able to write articles for yourself, but there’s nothing wrong with encouraging your own league operators to send in reports and pictures from your local leagues’ events to what-ever billiard media you might have in your area so that they can publish them. And they will publish them, too. They love that sort of stuff!

If you’d like to see league play get back to where it used to be − to where it was meant to be − you have to re-turn to being the type of player you used to be. You have to be a team player. Going it alone doesn’t get the job done. It takes teamwork. So, support your home room, and your home room will support you. Support your league, and your league will support you. Sup-port your team, and your team will support you. But if you support only yourself, you will have only yourself for support.

See you in Vegas!

Roger Long

Groggy’s 6-19; This month, 15 strong teams converged on Groggy’s to test their skill and compete for $ 750.00 in prize money. Every team was ready and willing to make it a great Father’s Day weekend.

The hot seat match found Tony Yusik and Marci pitted against Eric and Rick. After a hotly contested match, Eric and Rick came away with the hot seat. At the same time Jeff and Todd worked their way through the loser’s bracket to face Tony and Marci for third place. In a come from behind victory, Jeff and Todd went on to face Eric and Rick for 1st place and Tony and Marci took 3rd place taking home $ 75.00.

In the final match Eric and Rick were not to be denied their 1st place finish. For their efforts Eric and Rick took home $ 590.00, while Jeff and Todd took home $ 185.00.

Once again Leon and his staff provided a great place to play, excellent food and outstanding service. I hope to see everyone there for next month’s tournament.

Jimbo’s Blind Draw Doubles event on May 28th drew 24 dart players in search of competi-tion, fun and a prize money.

The team of Kix & Ron took the hot-seat with a come-back 2-1 win over Pete & Eyvonne.

On the one loss side, Pete & Eyvonne ran into Alvi & Harry John. Alvi & Harry had lost to Kix & Ron in the third round, and were looking for a little payback in the fi-nals. The semi-final match went to a rub-ber match at 1-1, but Alvi & Harry won the deciding game for the 2-1 victory.

The payback that Alvi & Harry were looking for would have to wait on this night as Kix & Ron won the final match 2-0 to take home first place.

The OX Sports Bar held their monthly 5.0 & Under Dart Tournament on Saturday, May 28th.

The Hurricane Hotel [Brian M. & Russell] didn’t do much damage as they finished in 4th Place and collected $10. The Q’s [Quint & Little Quint] played well but ended up in 3rd Place with $40. The Bud Lighters [Angela & Brian S.] were caught walking down the street with a 12-pack of Bud Light instead of remaining focused on the match…they finished in a slurry 2nd Place and won $80. Don’t Tell Her Daddy [Keysha & Jason ] won the tournament and collected $130. Incidentally, Keysha’s daddy is Q who finished in 3rd Place…ya, I’m telling daddy!!

The next tournament will be on Saturday, June 25th. Signup is at 2p and the tournament will begin at 3p. Congratulations to our winners and we hope to see you at the end of the month!

“Baseball Fever. Catch it.” That was theme at this month’s Ladies Only Dart Tournament at the OX Sports Bar on Saturday, June 11th. All of the ladies wore a jersey or a cap representing their fa-vorite baseball team.

Brandy & Jamece finished 3rd in the “playoffs” and collected $30. In true baseball form, it was the Cardinals meet-ing the Rangers in the “World Series” showdown. Kristi & Dank represented the NL Cardinals while Suzy Q & Pat repre-sented the AL Rang-ers. And the World Series Champion-ship goes to Kristi & Dank as the NL beat the AL!! They won $100(000,000) and the Championship Rings are in the mail. Suzy Q & Pat collected $50 for their 2nd Place efforts. Con-gratulations to our winners, free entry in July’s tournament goes to Tasha & Brenna.

The tournament will be on Saturday, July 16 with 4p start. The theme will be a Hawaiian Luau so break out the Leis and bring a Hawaiian themed dish if you like, and we’ll see you in July! Aloha!

By Mike Bates

Mike, what is your take on etiquette, seems some people have none and others too much?

Great question that I had visited years ago, but not lately. First we will visit too much, because I think I know what you are referring too.

Some players feel the need to walk back and tap fists after every shot. My problem, If I throw a 1 mark it wasn’t a good shot and I don’t expect you to give me five. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

Before the match one

fist pound or one hand shake works. I have some times done it four times before the start of one game. Hey, we play you guys, fist tap, you cork, fist tap, other guy corks, fist tap, game is set, one more fist tap. You think I am exaggerating, it has happened many times. In Masters, we shake hands before the match and after. A great shot gets rewarded, usually by your team-mates, no need for all eight guys to reward it, it’s masters, we are supposed to hit big shots. If my opponent hits a good shot and I am next, as he is walk-ing by, I say “nice hit” or “nice shot”. I am lining up for my shot and don’t need to fist tap, high five etc.

During tournaments it is fine to

say “good darts” or tap on a good shot, but it has gotten way out of hand.

Next is etiquette, which has totally been lost over the last few years.

Standing behind an opponent or teammake and making conversation while they are on the line is ridiculous and rude. At Bull Shooters and Jim-bo’s, you shouldn’t even be inside the tables standing while others are shoot-ing, but they do.

Some players during league get inside the tables and homestead and never leave the area. Also leave the lanes open between the tables so others can get to the throwing area.

And many throwers act like they are the only players in the building. These are the guys and gals with loud voices that continually talk and scream at the board when they miss. You seem to forget that two other matches are being played next to you.

Get a clue, zip it and stand back. Leave the entry ways open and we will have a lot more fun playing the sport that we all love.

These are my opinions and I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

If the turnout for Bull Shooters’ “One Pocket Madness #2” was any indication, it looks like this new monthly tournament might be around to stay.

Because One Pocket tournaments take a good while to run their course, Bull Shooters’ TD Tres Kane limits his “Madness” fields to 16 players. The event in June came very close to this limit when 15 brave souls ventured from as far away as Yuma to compete.

With an impressive display of One Pocket firepower, Gus Briseno out-dueled Ray Robles in the final match to take first place. Robles wasn’t totally disappointed with second place, however, as he was able to turn in a fine perfor-mance against a very strong field and show the local pool community that he is one of its finest all-around players. Placing third was ever-scrappy Brett Huth, and in fourth was up-and-coming One Pocket star, Lenny Marshall.

Saturday, July 2nd is the date set for One Pocket Madness #3.

In 2007, I discovered the movie and the non-fiction book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne. If you’ve heard any-thing about it, then you know that it’s all about the Law of Attraction. Without giving away too much of the movie, the law of attraction is all about getting what you think about; using your thoughts and feel-ings to determine your destiny. Whatever you focus on will be attracted to you. Far fetched? Decide for yourself. But, you can’t deny that there’s much truth to this theory.

Without getting too heavy on this topic, let’s think about how this applies to pool. We may not realize it, but we often create our lives by focus-ing on what we don’t want. For instance, “I hope I don’t scratch,” “I don’t want to lose my next match,” “I’m not a bad player,” and “I hope I

don’t miss this shot.” These are all ways that we allow the things we don’t want to creep into our subconscious.

Instead, choose the exact spot where you want the cue ball end up and think, “I’ll make this shot and the cue ball will go there,” and visual-ize it happening. Say, “I will win my next match,” and believe it. Say, “I’m a spectacular pool player!” and be proud of it. Think, “make it, make it, make it,” with each warm up stroke and see the ball going into the pocket. Visualize everything that you want to happen, making the shot, beating your opponent, and winning the tournament. Attract the positive outcomes with your positive thoughts.

Obviously, I can’t guarantee that just by doing this you will win more tournaments. However, I do believe that by adjusting the way we phrase our thoughts, not only in pool but also in life, we can proactively attract the things we want, not what we don’t want. A quote by Henry

Ford: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, either way, you’re right.”

Shifting the way we think and feel to the things that we want takes practice. It’s natural to want to complain about bad things that hap-pened, the bad rolls we got, the bad luck we had. But, if we can focus on the positive things, we create them for ourselves. Our destiny lies in the future, not in the past. If we constantly dwell on the negative things from our past, then we inevitably recreate them. Remove “I can’t and “I’m not” from your vocabulary.

Imagine yourself as a magnet that attracts things to you through the signals you emit, using your thoughts and feelings. Whether its money, relationships, health, or pool, be clear about what you want the ultimate outcome to be. Visualize it. Believe in it. And, make it happen for yourself. Focus on the things you want, not the things you don’t want.

If you have yet to see the movie, watch it or read the book with an open mind.

18 Players came out to Kolby’s Corner Pocket for the Preacher Ronn Invita-tional one pocket tourna-ment in Tempe. Some of the best players in the state were on hand to battle it out for the cash, even some play-ers from Tucson showed up to play. This handicapped tournament makes players of all levels be competitive and have a chance to win.

George Teyechea battled it out on the one loss side with Lenny Marshall while Bernie Pettipiece and Preacher Ronn Rutan battled for the hot seat. Lenny went on to beat George and to face Ronn who lost the hot seat match. A hill to hill battle all the way to the last ball between Rutan and Marshall ended with Rutan making a solid shot for the win and a ticket to the finals.

Ronn would have to beat Bernie twice to take it down. Ronn won the first set and both players agreed to split. Great tournament by these fierce grind-ers, come out and play with some of Arizona’s best at the next one pocket event on the last Saturday of every month at Kolby’s.

Stingers and Walgreens, ROCK AGAINST CANCER benefit show was a huge hit. Four bands, two comedians, some willing Karaoke singers, and amazing raffle prizes proved to be a winning combination. Stingers, together with Walgreens, were able to raise a total of $2200.00 for two deserving fami-lies. But more than a great benefit, this was a heartwarming outreach in the support of two families who are battling cancer. When Steve Davis learned that two of his co-workers had family members battling cancer, he decided to contact Dale and Dana (owner of Stingers) to explain the situation and they decided to create the ROCK AGAINST CANCER benefit show.

Not only did the benefit show have bands like, Hellbilly Motorcade, Fatal Error, The Relics, and Drinking Water rocking the stage, there was also an “American Idol” style karaoke contest. Dana and two of her friends were the judges, and the winner was crowned “Stingers Idol”. Simon Romo and David Bianco kept the crowd laughing with some hilarious jokes. Thousands of dollars in raffle prizes were awarded as well as 200 Dia-mondback tickets, generously donated by New Exodus. Stingers would like to thank all the awesome dart and pool players that came out to support this event adding,” We have the best players in the valley.”

John Lodley & Mark Kosman were sitting pretty in the hot-seat at Kitty’s May Scotch Doubles event. They had just beaten the team of Rocky Morris & Mike Kurley and knew they had some time to wait for an opponent in the finals. While they were waiting, they might have wanted to keep an eye on the play of Johnny Garcia & Bob Jacobs.

Garcia & Jacobs had lost their second match of the tournament to Amado Martinez & Layton Thomas, but were powering their way through the one loss side with some amazing “come from behind” wins.

Comeback #1 saw Garcia & Jacobs recover from a 6-3 deficit to Martinez and Thomas on the one loss side to win four in a row and score the 7-6 win.

Next up for the comeback kids was Morris and Kurley and a quick 6-2 hole. No problem as Garcia & Jacobs won five straight games for the 7-6 victory.

In the first set of the finals, Lodley and Kosman came out a little slow and that was all the chance that Garcia & Jacobs needed. Johnny & Bob never trailed in the match and cruised to a 7-4 win.

Both teams were happy to have just gotten this far, and agreed to split first and second place prize money of $760.

Skip & Jan’s has teamed up with well known local player Ray Robles to host a new Monday night open handicapped event on the 9 footers. The first of these events on June 6th saw Angel Paglia go undefeated for the win.

Paglia (a B player) faced off against Arizona’s premier tourney streamer Lenny Marshall (B player) for the hot seat, which she won.

Meanwhile, two C players (George Stone and Charles Cottrell) were matching up on the one loss side. Stone would be the better in that match but he would then lose to Marshall in the semi-final match.

The finals was a rematch between Angel and Lenny, with Angel repeating her earlier win for first place.

This is a new weekly event on the schedule and players are urged to get out and support this event.

Eleven teams braved the ever increasing temperatures to show their skills at the monthly 15 & under scotch doubles tournament. The teams were vying for $ 890.00 in prize money.

The hot seat match went hill/hill between Jimmy Brewer & Mike LaLumiere against Harold Lyons & Laura Boothroyd. After many tense moments, Jimmy & Mike won the hot seat. At the same time Bill Vanderwyst & Kevin Arco won the opportunity to play Harold & Laura.

It was an exciting match between Harold & Laura versus Bill & Kevin, but in the end Harold and Laura came away with 3rd place and $ 55.00.

Bill & Kevin were faced with an up-hill battle against Jimmy & Mike. After a rather slow start, the match heated up and things got interesting. In the end, Bill & Kevin won the first match and all parties decided to split the pot. Each team went home with $ 400.00 for their efforts.

As always, Skip & Jan’s provided a great place to play, great food and excellent service. I hope to see all of you there next month.
