Congratulations to everyone who cashed at the BCA Nationals in Vegas last month. We do have a lot of photos from the event in the paper this month, but I apologize that we do not have photos of Vicky Jaime or any of the teams that did so well out there. We are welcoming Bob Jewett’s instructional column to the paper this month. Bob is one of the most well known instructors on the west coast and is a large supporter of pool all across the US. I am looking forward to seeing all of the pool players out at Fort McDowell for the BCAPL Southwest Regional at the end of the month. We won’t have results for the event in time for the September paper, but should have full coverage in the October issue.

Until next time... - Mike

Ed Scott wins at Knobbys

Ed Scott went through a field of fourteen players to win the Knobby’s 9 & Un-der 8-Ball event on July 4th.

After a win over Burt Balancad for the hot-seat, Scott got comfortable waiting for an opponent in the finals.

On the one loss side, Chuck Parrill was on a roll after losing his first match of the night. Parrill bounced back with four straight wins, but lost to Balancad in the semi-final match.

The finals would be a repeat of the hot-seat match with Scott winning and Bal-ancad settling for second place.

Precision Practice

By Bob JewettPBIA Instructor

You may have heard the story of Mosconi demonstrating position play during an exhibi-tion. He would put out a small piece of paper where the cue ball was going to stop for the next shot, and most of the time the cue ball would cover the paper.

Hal Houle tells a similar story about Ralph Greenleaf, who isoften credited with training Mosconi -- intentionally or byosmosis. Greenleaf would let you put two object balls anda coin out on the table. He would then pocket the two ballsand leave the cue ball on the coin after the second ball.

Have you ever tried to play this sort of precise position? I’m convinced that most play-ers can’t becaue they never try. Further, if they did try, they would probably discover and fix various basic problems in their game.

One learning aid on the market teaches this kind of positoin play -- Kim Davenports “Target Pool” in which you play a sequence of shots hoping to leave the cue ball on a bull’s-eye target placed on the table, and score more points according to how close to the10-spot you leave the cue ball.

Here are some shots you can set up yourself to practice precise position-ing.

In Shot 1, the goal is to leave the cue ball exactly on the side cushion. (If you need motivation, assume your next ball is by that rail and nearly blocked by intervening balls.) You have some leeway in the side-to-side position; anywhere close to the rail is OK. Start with the object ball close to the sidepocket, and gradually move it further back. Give points: 1 point for a ball away from the rail, 2 points for half a ball, 3 points for a chalk-width, and 5 points for freezing the cue ball.

In the second part of this drill, play the shot with draw to bring the cue ball

back to the cushion you are standing near.

In Shot 2, the goal is similar, but you have to take the cue ball more or less sideways to leave it on the short rail. Again, try to freeze it. Begin with the object ball a few balls off the cushion, as shown, and gradually increase the distance the cue ball must travel. The cue ball is in hand for each shot.

Finally, try Mosconi’s drill, but give yourself a little more margin. Use a dollar bill, and if you can leave the cue ball on the bill you get a point. You could even make a competition of it by adding the number of “on the bill” leaves to the number of racks won.

I think you’ll find that after a few

hours of this sort of practice, you’ll be making position shots you would neverhave attemped in a game before. If you don’t try for precise shape, you can’t expect to get it.

Players heading to Vegas for the BCA Nationals got one last chance to hone their games against top competition at the Stinger’s BCA warm up singles and scotch 8-ball events on July 11th - 13th. By the end of all three days of play, Hopell Ampongan, Bernie Store, Mike Williams and Leandrea Gaff would be the big winners for the weekend.

Things kicked off on Friday with twenty players in the Men’s singles division. The field of players in this event was packed with talent including such notables as Brian Reich, Evans Bishop, Alex Aroz, Ed Scott, Jamie Cole, Burt Balancad and Jerry Stuckart.

The hot-seat would come down to Ampongan and Cole. Hopell had notable wins over George Bell and Stuckart, while Cole had wins over Ed Scott, Carl Stewart and Brian Poore. Hopell would take the hot-seat in a lopsided 4-1 match.

As the men’s event moved into Saturday, the ladies kicked off an 8 player singles event that saw Bernie Store take the hot-seat with a 6-1 win over Donna Taylor. That would not be the last Bernie would see of Taylor though.

In the men’s event, Ken Gouso put on a show on the one loss side. After a first round loss to Stuckart. Gouso came back with wins over Frank

Alvarez, Balancad and Evans Bishop before dropping another decision to Jerry Stuckart and finishing out of the money.

Stuckart’s next opponent was Brian Reich who also had a nice winning streak going. Reich had wins over Ricky Tyrell, Ed Scott and Brian Poore before falling to Stuckart in 4th place.

Stuckart’s run would come to an end however, as Jamie Cole scored a 4-3 win to send Stuckart back to the tour-nament director’s desk in third place. Not bad consider-ing Stuckart was giving the field a game due to his BCA Advanced player status.

The final match rematch between Hopell and Jamie went the same was as their first meeting, with Hopell scoring a 4-2 win for first place.

The ladies bracket saw Taylor defeat Leandrea Gaff 4-2 to earn a rematch with Store in the finals. The finals would go to two sets with Taylor beating Store 4-1 in the first set, but losing 6-1 in the second.

As singles play wound down on Saturday, an eleven team scotch event kicked off. The matches ran late with four teams coming back to compete on Sunday.

On the winners side, Mike Williams and Leandrea Gaff teamed up to defeat Bernie Store and Ed Scott 5-1 for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Brian and Veronica Poore eliminated Steve Blackburn and Melanie Ryan 3-1 to keep their tuornament hopes alive.

Brian & Veronica would settle for 3rd place, as they dropped their next match 5-0 to Bernie & Ed.

The finals saw Bernie & Ed jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in their 6-5 race against Mike & Leandrea, but Mike & Leandrea then took control and won four straight games to take the hill at 4-2. Ed & Bernie fought back and won two straight racks, but couldn’t stop Mike & Leandrea from winning the match 5-4 for first place.

The APA held it’s second annual Junior National tournament in Davenport Iowa last month. 7 Valley kids attended the competition bringing home several trophies and accolades. Ian Maldonado and Memphis Norton brought home the big prizes but all the kids did excep-tionally well considering the competition. there were 115 junior competitors from all over the country and Canada at the event, The Phoenix players did exceptionally well said Gina Nowlin, the APA Phoenix Metro League Operator. Gina attended the event along with the kids and their parents. Our kids received so many compliments for their exceptional sportsmanship and attitudes, she said. We were so proud of all of them.

The tournament was tiered for age and skill levels. Ian Maldonado took 1st place in the White tier by taking down one of the local favor-ites in the final match, while Memphis Norton had his own battle going on in his final’s match. Memphis ended up with a very strong 2nd place showing in the green tier. Both boys received trophies, a cue, and gift certificates among other prizes.

Both Michael Dale and Anthony Rounds finished 4th and Jahnythan Craig got to 5th place in their respective tier levels. Selena West and James Diaz both finished in a respectable 12th place out of 115 contestants.

Ian Maldonado and Selena West also received an academic award for holding a 3,0 or higher average on their school report cards, an added award to the juniors program. Ian and Selena both received medals for their accom-plishment.

Jeanette Lee was also on hand to play

challenge matches with the kids and to give a motivational speech at the opening ban-quet. Our own Selena West was caught on the live stream in her challenge match with Jeanette. Saved videos can be viewed at: www.tvmike.tv

Mini tournaments were run all weekend long for both the kids and the adults, and doubles events allowed the kids to play along with their parents. Michael Dale and Jahnythan Craig both took 1st place in their mini tournaments and received trophies and gift cards.

This event was the 2nd annual Junior National event for the APA. This year the event virtually doubled in size as the kids were excited about playing in their own national event. The APA has been sponsoring National tournaments for amateur pool players for years. This event was started last year to give the many junior players in the APA an event of their own.

APA Phoenix Metro and all of the juniors would especially like to thank Mike Bates and his fam-ily for sponsoring the kids. Mike owns Bullshooters, the biggest pool and dart facility in Arizona and possibly the southwest area. Mike has supported our juniors program since its beginning in 2009. We started with 4 kids and have grown to over 25 kids ranging from ages 6 to 17 years old, said Gina. The Bates family has always been here for us and has made this program such a success, helping with donations and fundraisers that allowed these young pool shooters to travel to Iowa.

A complete list of the junior participants from Phoenix with their age:

1st place - Ian Maldonado (age 8)2nd place - Memphis Norton (age 9) 4th place - Michael Dale (age 16)4th place - Anthony Rounds (age 17) 5th place - Jahnythan Craig (age 8)12th place -Selena West (age 12)12th place - James Diaz (age 14)

Rob Green Player Bio & What’s In The Case

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

My grandfather started teach-ing me pool when I was 10, but I have only been playing com-petitive and attempting to get better for the last 7-8 yrs. I play mainly in leagues and a few tournaments here and there. I do not like to gamble on pool, for me it is not what pool is about. I hear way too many horror stories about people gambling with the wrong kind of people and losing more than just the game. I also run the G Cue Billiard Store in Tempe which definitely helps fuel my passion for the game

Q .What cue do you use?

A. Schon LTD with a monitor lizard skin wrap. Cue weighs 18.7oz. Shaft standard Schon shaft it came with although it’s been turned down to a 12mm with a Kamui Black Soft tip.

The Dart Thrower: Far Behind or Far Ahead Part 1

By Karlheinz Zöchlingwww.dartbase.com

In some games you are behind, in some games you are in the lead - a dartplayer’s usual business. Both situations have their own typical mental con-sequences. The most common situation is that the (supposed to be!) better player is in front. That’s a normal situation which both players are “used to”. In most cases the weaker player resigns at some point of the match, and then it’s all over. It usually is easy to see who is behind only by looking at the players’ behavior. The player who is behind will lower his head and shoulders, usually shake his head or even nag or grumble. Well, only a mentally weak player would do so.

In such situations where you are a way behind it is important to think about what your look is like. Check yourself for what I mentioned above. Do you look like a loser? Then you normally are a loser. The player who is

in front is expecting this. Raise your shoulders, raise your head and step to the line in full confidence. Don’t care about the standings in the match. Just look like a winner. Your opponent will recognize your confident look and maybe (if he is mentally weak) be-gin to think about why you look as if you were in the lead. And this is your chance. Once you get your opponent to think a little more than usual, he may lose his balance. Of course you will have to throw some good darts to close up, but if you look strong and confi-dent (even if you actually don’t feel strong and confident) real strength and confidence are often coming to you. If you look like the boss on the board it’s not unusual that you in fact will be-come the boss!

Of course this needs practice. So take care of your behavior during dart matches. Ask a friend to watch your play. After the match he can tell you which impression he had of your behaviour. After a while it won’t be difficult for you to recognize by your-self what effect your look has to your

opponent, and then you will be able to control it properly.

Next month, we will look at situations where the weaker player is faced with the unusual situation of being in the lead, which surprisingly usually puts him in trouble.

Mike, what was the best tour-nament win you ever had and why?

There are a few, but we can call this “Dream Team Revis-ited” for this article. In 1900, Tee Kee Tee Darts was the NDA operator in the valley. Steve and Debbie Davis ran the leagues and decided to put together what they called the “Dream Team”. It would consist of four players which they would pick to play in the highest level at the NDA World Championships. The four they picked were: John Gray, Brad Halley, Richie Finn and Tim Mosher, all great players.

I had just joined Tee Kee Tee and John knew me the best from other leagues and tourna-ments. He them that unless I was on the team, they didn’t have the four best players and he wouldn’t play. They re-placed John with Jeff Loisel

to form the team. John called me and asked if I wanted to put together a team to compete and I said yes. We got Dan Wilson and Keith Lemons to round out our team.

It was a three day grueling event with 273 teams in the top division. We played from morning until night each day. When the dust cleared on Saturday, only four teams remained standing: Team Canada, Team France, The Az Dream Team and our team. We would play a double elimination for the World Championship. We beat Canada, they beat France, we beat them. They beat Canada and it was set, two Az teams would play for the title, one would be World Champions.

The match was played and it ended up 6-6. The tie breaker was their two best against our best two, one game 301 freeze for all of the marbles. We won the diddle and went first. John hit a 109, Richie hit 60, I hit 150 and Tim followed with a 150. John hit a hat trick leaving 42. Rich had a tough fallout and left 191. I had a shot at a

By Mike Bates

Ask Mike

perfect game and two points would freeze Tim. I hit Bull, Bull, and had a bounce out right on the triple 17. It game me a single, leaving 34. Tim was froze and hit another hat trick, leaving 1 point. John took it out in two darts to secure the victory.

With thousands in the audience and us up on stage and on the monitors, the crowd gave us a standing ovation and the juke box blared out “We Are The Champions” by Queen. World Cham-pions, beating all 272 teams and our own “Dream Team”, no better feeling.

When the stats came out, all eight Arizona players were the top shoot-ers. Top Gun was John Gray with the highest anyone had ever shot by over 6.0. Myself, Richie Finn and Brad Halley also finished higher than any previous Top Gun. It sold me on Team Dart, NDA and the freeze rule, which I believe makes it a true team event. But most of all, it was eight players from Arizona showing not only the coun-try, but the world that Arizona Darts were the best and would be for years

to come. Later that year, the Master League was born and as they say, “The Rest Is History”. Great darters have moved here and been homegrown as well.

I was, and still am, honored to have played in the first Az top division World Championship with seven great guys and dart players. To me, that was the start of greatness for Az darts.

As always, these are my thoughts and story and I may be wrong. But I doubt it.

Gouso fought back from a 0-4 scoreline to defeat Ed Scott 6-5 for the hot-seat.

Next up for Craft was a 6-4 win over Ed Scott to earn him his place in the finals with Gouso.

The first set of the finals went hill-hill with Craft scoring the 6-5 win and both players agreed on a split from there.

V’s Hired Nut Crackers For The WinOn July 5th and 6th, Stingers held a Bca team warm up event. The teams had a max handi-cap of 32 and the matches ranged from 8 to 13 games. There were only 10 teams that came out, but they were 10 strong teams. V’s Hired Nut Krackers (Brian Reich, Brett Huth, Chris Reddin, and Veronica poore) played the Final Four (Mike Sando-val, Kurt Siebels, Mark Catanzaro, and Eric Lervold) for the hot seat. V’s Hired Nut krackers had to spot the final four a game on the wire and it came down to exactly that.. The wire! At hill-hill, Sandoval broke dry and Brett Huth did what he does best; he ran the table and captured the hot seat for his team.

Meanwhile, on the B side, Hybrid Hustlers (Jason Polk, Troy Ridder, Steve Deluna and Burt Balancad) were playing Pimpin Aint Easy (Chris Negrin, Ryan Levengood, Amado Martinez, and Chris Miller) The Hybrid Hustlers, who lost their very 1st match to No flash, battled back and made it to the next day by beating Pimpin Aint Easy 13 to 3.

We brought back the final 3 teams the next day. Final Four beat Hybrid Hus-tlers 12 to 10, giving the Hybrid Hustlers $200 for 3rd place. In the finals of the 1st set, Final Four came out firing, winning the set 12-9. They didn’t start out so great as they fell behind early 7-3 in the 2nd set. They kept fighting but V’s Hired Nut Krackers were shooting strong and finished it off winning the set 13 to 9. Taking home $1250 for 1st place and Final four winning $600 Congratula-tions and thank you to all the teams who played!

Watson Wins One Pocket Event

With only five players showing up for the Kolby’s one pocket, this did not deter the players from having a round robin tournament. In the round robin format every player plays one another one time with the best record winning.

Lenny Marshall lost his first match to Joe Watson but went on to win all his other matches against Lee Brown, Bernie Pettipiece and Eric Lacey. It came down to Watson who was 2-1 playing his last match with Pettipiece who was also 2-1. If Bernie were to win then Marshall would get the win with as he defeated Bernie earlier and both would have 3-1 records. Watson defeated Pet-tipiece finishing with a 3-1 record the same as Marshall but Joe had defeated Lenny earlier giving him the tournament win.

The next tournament at Kolbys will be August 30th the last Saturday of the month at noon.

Complete Payouts:1st Joe Watson $902nd Lenny Marshall $60

Eric Young over Ellerman at Bullshooters

Eric Young handed Mitch Ellerman a dominating loss to capture Bullshooter’s Two Day One Pocket Madness event on July 12th and 13th.

Ellerman was the man to beat on Saturday, and no one was able to do that. No-table wins on Saturday for Ellerman included a 4-1 win over Young and a 4-3 win over Gus Briseno for the hot-seat.

The field played down to just two players coming back on Sunday, and those players would be Ellerman and Young.

Ellerman was late getting to the final match on Sunday, but Young made it clear that he didn’t want to win his match via forfeit and waited for Ellerman to arrive. While some players might take a win over Ellerman any way they can, Young wanted his win the honest way and he got it, with a 5-0 win in the finals.

“I put up a better fight this time” said Young after the match. Young continued “But he wasn’t the same player today”.

As part of the two day event, a field of players came back on Sunday for a second chance event. This event saw Lenny Marshall go undefeated, including wins over Tres Kane for the hot-seat and again in the finals.

Main Event Payouts: Second Chance Payouts:1st Eric Young $650 1st Lenny Marshall $1602nd Mitch Ellerman $250 2nd Tres Kane $100

Over 100 people showed up on Sunday to Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe for the memorial of Billy Mac who passed recently from cancer.

It was free drinks on Billy, courtesy of Pawnshop Rod Sands, and free food courtesy of Kolby’s for many of the old faces that showed up.

It was a nice turnout to celebrate the life of a man that always had a smile on his face and something nice to say.

An Interview with Pro-Player David Matlock

By Melissa “The Viper” Little

At one time, people said he was THE best bar-table in the world; he has won hundreds of tournaments around the USA and was nomi-nated “Player of the Decade” in the 80’s. It was a pleasure and honor to interview David and just to let you know this is the only interview he has given to the press. So thank-you David for giving us a glimpse into your personal and professional life.

The Interview:

Viper: Where were you born?Dave: I was born Fort Carson, CO –I was a military brat because my dad was in the army.

Viper: What are your biggest accomplish-ments in the sport of billiards?Dave: The one tournament that really stands out is when I won the 2006 Derby City Clas-sic Banks event and during the same week had a 5th-8th place finish in the 1-Pocket event which also gave me enough points to finished 2nd in the All-Around division.

Viper: Do you have a nickname?Dave: Scott Smith, pro tournament director, for years has been calling me the “Gun Fight-er”.

Viper: What do you do when you’re not com-peting?Dave: I am still very much involved with the sport and am currently the house-pro at Shooters billiards in Olathe, KS www.shoot-ersolathe.com. I give lessons multiple times per week; my rates are $50 per hour with a minimum of 2-hours booked. That is one thing I truly enjoy most is teaching pool.

Viper: How would someone contact you for lessons?Dave: They can call me on my cell and set up an appointment – (913) 269-1077

Viper: Do you have siblings?Dave: Melissa, I have a huge family, I am one of 15 kids – I have four sisters and eleven brothers. Unfortunately, five of my siblings have past away. I am the 7th son and the 10th one born.

Viper: Do or did any of them play pool?Dave: When I was younger my older brother Jimmy played pool, but as an adult he never stuck with the game.

Viper: How did get you started? Dave: I was born in Colorado and then my family moved to Rolla, MO. At the age of 15 I played high school football and in-between daily practices the boys and I would go to a little place called Stan’s Pool Hall to play pool.

Viper: When I was a kid, I was told that you locked yourself in a room with a bar table for 6-months and came out a champion. Is any of that true?Dave: No…Sorry to say Melissa none of that

is true. But that’s a good story!

Viper: In your opinion, what parts of the world produces the best players?Dave: There is no question about it, the Philip-pines.

Viper: Why: Dave: I don’t really know how to answer that one. I do know that it’s a rough life over there and they have to work really hard to get what they want – it’s a dog eat dog third world coun-try. Their work ethic is off the chart; you can just automatically see their dedication to pool. Over the years, I have been so impressed with Filipino player Efren Reyes; he liter-ally changed the game of pool. When he first came over to the US, he brought a whole new dimension to us American players – He really taught us what one foul pool was by the way he kicked at balls and maneuvered the cue ball in and out of traffic for suburb position.

Viper: Who is/was your favorite pro player growing up?Dave: Buddy Hall was my favorite. At one time, his 9-ball game was so powerful and when he was playing well he made pool look beautiful to watch. It’s a shame and unfor-tunate that today’s generation couldn’t see Buddy in his prime.

Viper: Did you ever play in a pool league?Dave: No – just tournaments.

Viper: Are you good at any other sports?Dave: When I was younger I loved to play baseball, I played with some of the best semi-pro players from MO, and some of them even eventually tried out for the major leagues. I was pretty good myself for a little guy with a big arm, they didn’t call me “The cannon” for nothing!

Viper: Describe yourself in three words?Dave: The Good, the bad and the ugly… lol

Viper: If you had to live your life over again, what would one thing you change about your-self and/or your pool career? Dave: One thing I would change is that I wouldn’t have played so much on the bar table. I wish I had played more on big (9 ft) table. I never really gave myself an opportunity to try and get the recognition of becoming the #1 player in the world. I never played a full year out on tour. But don’t get me wrong, I still had a lot of enjoyment playing on the bar table. If a younger player was making a choice to which table to start off on, I would suggest playing on the 9 ft tables, besides these days everyone plays well on the bar table.

Viper: How do you prepare for events?Dave: I always practiced by myself and before big events I would put in at least 6-7 hours a day for 3-4 days in a row.

Viper: What was the best advice you were

ever given?Dave: When I was 15-years-old I was given the knowledge of the “5-System”. A long time friend of mine in the pool hall taught me this technique on a 3-cushion billiards table. Later, The 3-Rail System really woke my game up and taught me how to kick, bank and play good position. I encourage all of the readers to learn about it and apply it to there game.

Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool?Dave: I have always enjoyed helping other players with their games. Its an awesome feel-ing when one of your students comes up to you and says that they won there first tournament, or banked in a shot or kicked a ball in on there opponents just from learning from you! I love it!

Viper: If you could say one thing to a young up-coming player what would it be? Dave: Stay in school and focus on your stud-ies. It’s so important to follow your education and it doesn’t take up that much time to finish high school and attend college. You can always play pool down the road later on in life.

Viper: What’s your Favorite game?Dave: 3-Cushion Billiards, Snooker and bar pool. Really ALL the games pool has to offer, I truly love them all!!!

Viper: Did anyone give you pool lessons? Dave: Some people would share information but mostly I was self-taught and playing 35-40 always helps too. (continued on page 33)

Page 33: Az Billiard and Dart News August 2014

PAGE 33

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsAugust 2014(continued from page 32)

Viper: Did you ever compete playing 3-Cushion Billiards tournaments? Dave: I only played in two 3-cushion events in my whole pool career and both were in 1975, I finished 8th in the first event and 2nd place the other one.

Okay Dave, here are some questions from some of my Facebook friends… Facebook questions:

Bill Akers from Mediapolis, Iowa asks: Throughout the years who was his biggest rival and who was his toughest competition on the bar box?Dave: I really didn’t have any rivals, but some of my goals were to beat players like Keith McCready, David Howard Aka “Little David” and of course Buddy Hall. Eventually I beat them all on the bar table.

Josh Soneathit Souvannakasy from Anchorage, Alaska asks: If he were a hustler what pool name he would like to be?Dave: “The Outlaw” Josey Wales.

Improve your Shot from San Antonio, Texas asks: How does he over come the Jitters?Dave: The best way to get rid of the jitters is by constantly staying in action and also playing the best players. But I want you to know that EVERYONE gets nervous and it how long it takes you to get into your rhythm is the key. If someone has told you then never get nervous I would have to say they are lying or they are not trying to play there best. Even the top pros get a little nervous, all it means is your ready to go. Your ready to rumble on the table.

Justin Wray from Salem, Arkansas asks: Which particular opponent’s high gear actually made him nervous?Dave: I would have to say Wade Crain Aka “Boom-Boom” from NC, he could put some racks together on you and he had a very powerful break. I think if I am not mistaken he was one of the only players from the men’s Camel Pro Tour that ever had perfect Accu-Stats score of 1000, and it was in the finals against Buddy hall.

Justin also asks: Are there any “current” players that remind him of his younger self?Dave: There are so many great players I have seen over the past 35-40 years of my playing but one player’s sticks out a little more than the oth-ers and that’s Jessie Bowman. I think he’s got a great all-around game and he has become quite the bar table specialist. I like his game a lot!

Richard Penny from Starke, Florida asks: What’s it like knowing that whichever bar or tavern you walk into, with a bar box table, you are the winner?Dave: It’s a good feeling – in the 70s and 80s I played most of the great players!

Dawayne Pearson from Plainfield, Indiana asks: I’m curious to know his highest billiard run is playing 3-Cushion Billiards? Dave: Dawayne, I was playing in a tournament in IL and between match-es I played 3-Cushion Billiards with a friend of mine and ran 15 Billiards in a row.

Mark Chernin from Lecompton, Kansas asks: Is he 60 years old yet? Dave: Mark, not yet… I am 59 years old.

David Cockayne from Des Moines asks: What is his record of racks run in a row playing 9-ball? Dave: David, I have run 13 racks of 9-ball once on my opponent.

Todd Ward from Kansas City, Kansas asks: How’s he deal with age and eyesight issues? I’m 47 and every day it seems different? Dave: Todd, it seams like you need to see the eye doctor? I have not been able to see up close-up since my early 40’s. When I was younger I used to hold my cue on the wrap area of my cue but now that I am older and cant really see close up anymore, I tend to hold my cue further in the back of the cue, like around the butt end. Try it; it might help to get that extra length to see a little bit better. It works for me anyways.

Jason Sweet Wins Metro 9’s & Under

Home field advantage proved to not be enough to help Johnny Naumann stop Jason Sweet at Metro Sportz Bar’s 9’s and under event on July 12th.

Naumann met up with Sweet for the hot-seat, but dropped that match 6-2.

Tim Rachu was the man to beat on the one loss side. After a 6-1 loss to Sweet in the winners side final four, Rachu beat James Main and Chad Barber. Naumann would finally stop Rachu with a 5-3 scoreline.

That set up a rematch between Naumann and Sweet in the finals, and the re-match went one set with Sweet scoring the 6-3 win for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Jason Sweet $1,630 5th James Main $1302nd Jon Naumann $630 5th Eddie Koonce $503rd Tim Rachu $200 7th Brian McGee $504th Chad Barber $100 7th Todd Dilley $50
