And now we have a rivalry. Big congratulations to the #Bestside team for bringing the Saguaro Cup to the Westside, where it belongs. With as big an event as this year’s cup was, I can’t wait to see what Jeremy Gibbs has in store for everyone next year.

Diamond Pool Tour players, please note that the September stop has been moved back one week, so as not to conflict with the South West Regionals.

Big thanks to everyone for the help again this month. Especially Rick Schmitz and Dave Linke. All of the good pictures in the paper are from one of them. The bad ones are from me.

-Until next time Mike

The 2nd Annual Arizona State Junior 9-Ball Championship returned to Bull Shooters Sports Bar and Grill in Phoenix on April 9th, to see four new state champions crowned.

With only two girls in attendance, the 14 & Under Girls division was won by 14 year old Selena West, while the 18 & Under Girls divi-sion was won by 15 year old Tory Conley. Both girls competed in the open division, in addition to capturing their girl’s division titles.

The 14 & Under division saw a surprise victor emerge from a round robin format. With three players aged 14 and under, the division was played as a “double round robin” event, with each played taking on the other two players in two races to four. After one round of play, 11 year old Jahnythan Craig was unbeaten with an 8-5 game record. Wickenburg’s Michael Flinn was 1-1 with a 6-7 game record, and West was in third with a 6-8 game record.

After both boys had played West in the second round, Craig was still unbeaten with a 12-6 game record, while Flinn was 2-1 with a 10-8 game re-cord. Going into the final match, between Craig and Flinn, Craig would just have to win three games to win the division outright. Two games would force a third “tie-breaker” match. Unfortu-nately for Craig, it was Flinn turning in a 4-1 win in the final match to win the division with a 3-1 match record and an overall 14-9 game record. Craig finished with a 3-1 match record and a 13-10 game record.

The 18 & Under division saw five players competing for the title. Sixteen year old Sam Lenschow has been getting the attention of a lot of players over the past couple of months with

his strong play, and this tournament was no excep-tion. Lenschow scored wins over 15 year old Andrew Reinhart, 15 year old James Diaz and 18 year old Michael Dale to take the hot-seat.

Dale bounced back from that hot-seat loss, to score a 6-2 win over Conley in the semi-finals and the fi-nal match rematch between Lenschow and Dale was underway. The hot-seat match had gone to Len-schow 6-5, so it was only right that the first set of the finals would go to Dale by that same 6-5 score. It looked like the second set of the finals might be going hill-hill too, but Dale won the match6-4 for his first Az State Championship.

All four division winners are now invited to compete in the Billiard Education Foundation’s Junior Nationals event in Chicago on July 13th - 16th this year. Tour staff thanked Mike & Julie Bates for hosting another great event, as well as Donna Dale for her help in organizing the event.

The “rivalry” between the Eastside and Westside of Phoenix has been pretty one-sided, ever since last year’s Saguaro Cup saw the #Eastmode squad defeat their rivals from the #Bestside 11-8. After that, it was the Eastside sweeping the Westside in the East/West Shootout in March. That event saw Eastside teams of 6s, 7s and 8s all defeat teams from the Westside. Fans were starting to doubt the reality of any real “rivalry”, when the Eastside never lost. All of that changed though, at the second annual Saguaro Cup at Bull Shooters on April 23rd.

This year, the Eastside was represented by team Captain Eric Nordstrom, Evans Bishop, Spike Aiardo, Jeremy Gibbs, Bobby Emmons and Susan Williams. The Westside countered with a roster of captain Ryan Anderson, John Ritonya. JR Burkhart, Nick De Leon, Chris Adams and Bernie Store.

Things looked to be getting off to a good start for team Eastside, as they won the team match 11-9 for the first point of the day. That would be the last of their celebrating though, as team Westside took the next four matches for a quick 4-1 lead. The Eastside team of Nordstrom and Williams would win a close 5-4 scotch doubles match over Anderson and Store to get back within two at 4-2, but to the shock of everyone but the West-side team and fans, the Eastside would not win another match all day. Not only did the Westside team win the next seven matches, but they never even allowed their rival competitors to get to the hill against them in any of those seven matches.

The 11-2 overall Westside win stunned the players and fans who made the trek from the Eastside, expecting another victory for their team. Perhaps more importantly though, it truly

cemented the idea of a “rivalry” between the two sides of town.

Enough kudos can not be given to event organizer Jeremy Gibbs, who put this event together and also helped to spearhead a fundraising drive that raised over $5,000 in prize money for the winning team. Gibbs wanted to send extra thanks to his “better half”, Melanie Rod-gers, for all of her help with the event. Big thanks go out to Mike and Julie Bates, as well as their staff, at Bullshooters. They brought in bleacher seating to accommo-date the fans, and worked tirelessly all day to take care of a room packed with hungry and thirsty pool fans. “Fast” Lenny Marshall also deserved thanks for the amazing streaming coverage of the event.

After the event was over, and both teams celebrated another successful event, team captains were cho-sen for next year. Anderson selected Brian Reich to captain the Westside team, while Nordstrom chose Mike Williams to build the team for the Eastside.

Ed Scott Undefeated at Knobbys

Ed Scott turned in an undefeated performance to win Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-Ball event on April 1st.

Ed’s path to the hot-seat included wins over Burt Balancad, Sophia Morquecho, Joe Nicita and a face from the past, Randy Boring.

On the one loss side, Nicita was bouncing back nicely from his loss to Scott. Wins over Sara Sorg, Teri Curtis and Boring led to a Nicita/Scott rematch in the finals.

Things looked good for Nicita after winning game one, but Scott made an 8-ball break to win game two and then won game three to complete the undefeated night.

The Diamond Pool Tour kicked off their 2016 season the same way they kicked off their 2015 season, with Scott Frost topping a huge field of “A” and “B” players. The season opener this season was 9-ball on the freshly reclothed 9’ tables at Bull Shooters in Phoenix. Not only did noted table mechanic (and leg-endary player) Ernesto Dominguez redo the vast majority of the tables at Bull Shooters before the event, but he also stuck around to compete in the event.

A record tying field of 94 players was split between 36 “A” players, and 58 “B” players. Frost started his trek to win the “A” bracket with wins over Emilio Maestas, Eric Young and Navin Talreja. A 9-3 win over top Arizona talent Chuck Evans, was followed up by a nail biting 9-8 win over Dominguez. Frost then cruised to the “A” bracket hot-seat with a 9-5 win over Mitch Ellerman. Ellerman would then defeat Paul Grande 9-3 on the one loss side.

The “B” bracket saw Tucson’s Tonee Allin display top level play all weekend, as he defeated Chris Carpenter, Chan Phan, Joe Guerra, Evan Brinkmann, Manny Luevano and then Oscar Avila Sr. for the hot-seat. On the one loss side. it was Karloz Chavez bouncing back from a 2nd round loss to win nine straight matches, including a 9-4 victory over Avila.

When the two brackets came together, Frost made quick work of Allin 9-2, to take the overall hot-seat. On the one loss side, Ellerman made even quicker work of Chavez, with a 9-0 win. Ellerman then sent Allin back to Tucson with a 9-5 loss, and got ready to take on Frost again in the finals. The finals saw Eller-man hand Frost his first loss with a 9-7 scoreline in the first set of the finals. Ellerman looked to be on his way to the double-dip in the second set, as he led the match early 3-1. A couple untimely mistakes by Ellerman were all that it took though, as Frost came back and won the second set 9-5.

Tour organizers expressed their thanks to Mike and Julie Bates at Bull Shooters, for hosting another great event, Rick Schmitz for the great photos, and “Fast” Lenny Marshall for two days of non-stop streaming coverage of the event.

The tour’s next stop is scheduled for May 14th at Stingers Sports Bar in Phoe-nix. The event will be bar table 9-ball.

Bernie Store returned to the AWBT’s winners circle, with an undefeated run through a field of 28 players to capture the second stop of the season at Skip & Jan’s in Gilbert Arizona on April 30th - May 1st.

Store dominated day one of the event, with wins over Kim Kauffman, Amanda Pulley and Becky Onnembo. Store finished the day with 21 game wins and 7 game losses.

Joining Store on the winner’s side were Sara Miller, Heather Cortez and Sarah Geoghan.

The one loss side saw a couple surprises as stop 1 winner Amanda Pulley, and Susan Williams both failed to make it to two day. Pulley dropped a left side match to Tami Hathcock, and Williams lost the last match of the night on Satur-day to Leadrea Gaff.

Sunday play on the winner’s side saw Store defeat Cortez 7-3 and Miller send Geoghan to the one loss side 7-4. Store would then go on to defeat Miller in a hill-hill match for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Onnembo defeated Gaff and Jaye Succo eliminated Susan Mello. Both players coming over from the winner’s side then won matches, as Geoghan defeated Onnembo, and Cortez defeated Succo.

A 7-4 win by Cortez over Geoghan, kept Cortez’s tournament hopes alive, but Miller quickly snuffed those hopes out with a 7-2 win in the semi-finals.

Store jumped on Miller right out of the gate in the finals, and quickly held a 5-1 lead in the extended race to 9. Miller would fight back, but it was Store scoring a 9-5 win in the end.

Store’s win, combined with her runner up finish at stop 1, moves her to the top of the AWBT points list. Miller moves into second place on the list. With their first and second place finishes, Store and Miller also won invites to the North American Pool Tour’s 10-Ball Invitational in Herndon, Va this June.

Eleven players returned to Skip and Jan’s on Sunday to compete in the second chance tournament. That event saw Susan Williams go undefeated for first place, with Jessica Derezinski taking second.

Tour staff expressed their thanks to Natalie and her great staff at Skip and Jan’s for hosting their season opener. Thanks were also given to the “friends of the AWBT” who added $100 to the main event and $50 to the second chance tour-nament, as well as Las Gloria Grille for adding $100 to the main event.

The AWBT will be at Stingers on June 25th - 26th, for their next stop.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue…

Spring has sprung upon the Phoenix foosball community and overall participation and camaraderie remains high in the Valley of the Sun. Depending on your perspective, it’s still me, ‘Something Old’, providing my two-cents worth of what’s happening with our local foosball scene. In addition, the winners of the Interim League have been decided. Re-garding ‘Something New’, the 2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League has started with some startling early season wins and losses. And…weekly tournaments at Dukes Sport Bar have implemented new formats, and there’s even a totally new DYP Foos Madness suggestion by one of our top rated players. We’re borrowing from past successes with our league and local tourneys to further tweak these events for even greater participation and enjoyment. And…a former foosball hot spot is closing its doors. So, you’d better keep reading to satisfy your curiosity on these topics !...

INTERIM LEAGUEThe 2015/2016 Winter Interim League wrapped up on April 6th with the following individuals claiming the top prizes.• Best overall winning percentage: Chris Petit (0.750)• Best winning percentage with a current rating >= 4: Chris Petit

(0.750)• Best winning percentage with a current rating < 4: Rick Weirman

(0.731)• Player with the most interim events played: Paul Freund (36)

Congratulations to Chris, Rick, and Paul and thanks to the other 75 play-ers who participated in another successful Interim League!

2016 SPRING LEAGUEThe much anticipated 2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League started on April 12th with a total of 19 teams vying for their shot at taking home the title in the season ending Foos Bowl XV. After three weeks of play, following are the standings.

Team Chaos

Although there are currently three teams with unbeaten records, my in-stinct is advising me that won’t last the entire season as there are numer-ous good teams currently with losses that I expect to be in the hunt for each conference’s number one seed. Team handicaps range from a low of 0.1 to a high of 7.8, with the average 3.4; a little below the 4.0 mean - primarily attributed to a larger number of beginners joining the league. I’m not entirely sure how to interpret that other than to state I suspect this year’s standings to be even tighter matched than last year’s.

Also, there’s more at stake than just the league champion of Foos Bowl XV! Following are a list of the other titles up for grabs and capable of being won by any league player.• League Stud: Best overall winning percentage• Goalie War Champion• Forward Shoot Out Champion• Five Bar War Champion

• Singles Champion• Doubles Champion• Rollerball Champion• Hired Gun: Best substitute player• Most Improved Player: League players vote for this champ at sea-

son’s end!

The above titles, except Hired Gun and Most Improved Player, will be determined by the best of each category in both the Western and Eastern Conferences squaring off the same day as the Foos Bowl XV champion-ship league match to determine the ultimate champions. You can track the above statistics on our site, http://www.arizonafoosball.com/Leagues in the Statistics section, which is updated weekly so that you can see how you’re faring against other players in the league.

MISCELLANEOUS RUMBLINGSThe Friday night tournaments being held at Dukes Sport Bar has changed from its previous weekly Bring Your Partner (BYP)/Open Dou-bles format to a biweekly BYP along with a Draw Your Partner (DYP) on alternating weeks. Regarding the new format DYPs, to date there have been regular DYPs, Hi-Low, and most recently, a one-ball Roll-erball tourney. The variety of the new DYP format is a well received change to the previous static Open Doubles format and expectations are that it will bring more new Friday night players out to Dukes. You can check the Coming Events section at www.ArizonaFoosball.com to see which events are scheduled.

“DYP Foosball Madness”Our very own Bryan Hendricks has suggested introducing a new ele-ment, DYP Foosball Madness, to the Friday night tourney at Dukes.

Following is a reprint of Bryan’s post:Instead of $8 for all players, make it $10 for all players. The $8 still goes to the tournament prize pool and the $2 extra per player goes to a pool divided among the players who have the “most correct filled-out tournament bracket” for that night’s tourney. Think NCAA March Mad-ness. Since BYPs are easier to calculate winners and losers, I say DYP to make it more challenging and fun.Example: Last week was a draw, 10 teams, 20 players, would be a $40 pool. Maybe a bunch of people just win their two bucks back and maybe a few people share the $40.Also, imagine the interactivity among players as they try to figure who can win. Players watching more matches because they have a vested in-terest. Newer players might have a desire to attend more events so they know the players and thusly be able to pick more accurately based on the combined skill level of the teams in a DYP.

Please feel free to provide your opinion on this new suggestion via the Forums section on the website or to other foosers including the league directors.

“Something Blue”Hazelwoods, a longtime and popular spot for valley foosers will be clos-ing its doors on May 22 due to new owners. The good news is that they are offering happy-hour all day, every day, until they close.

Tim Daniel - Player Profile

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Playing Cue:I play with a custom cue made by the owner of Main Street Billiards, Thor Skogan.

Break CueI use another Thor Skogan Custom Jump break cue. I love both of these cues and really enjoy playing with his cues and playing and running tournament at Main Street Billiards.

Shaft TaperI have a simple Pro Taper on both of my cues

ChalkI use Masters blue and have for years, before all of these high performance chalks came on the market.

Have you ever tried a high performance chalk?I like a good fresh piece of Masters Blue

CaseI use a Lucasi case that holds 5 cues total.

How did you choose that one? It just gets my cues around and that is all I need in a case

Player Bio I have been playing pool since the age 16, when I fell in love with the game. For the first couple of years I only played old school 8-ball. No ball in hand and the 8 ball had to go clean. I was so new to the game that I had never heard of ball in hand.

Once I hit my 20’s I met a man named Mon. He taught me the game of 9 ball and that opened up a whole new world to me. I was a kid in a candy store and since 9 ball had the ball in hand rules, I quickly adapted and en-joyed the new options that ball in hand offered.

A lot more tournaments started popping up since 9 ball was so much faster. I entered every one I could and got to learn the game from great players.

My next step in learning the game was to join

the APA, which back then it, was called Busch league. I enjoyed the APA but I knew the only way to keep improving my game was to start playing the Florida Pro Tour. I knew I did not have a chance to win, but I wanted the experience. My first goal was to make it to the money round. It took me 4 years of hard work and learning, but I reached my goal and reached the cash round.

Next, I took all that knowledge into an amateur league that formed a couple of years later. I could win events on this tour, but the most important thing to me is to look back on the close friends I have made in the pool world. I have friends I made 30 years ago and still enjoy that friendship.

I am currently 45 years old and I reflect often on my pool travels. The good, the bad and the ugly, but I understand each phase or piece has made the whole puzzle come together.

I am traveling to Sacramento CA in May to play a lot the highest pros in the game and hopefully make some more friendships that last another 30 years.

Where do you play I have found a home at Main Street Billiards in Mesa Arizona and love it. I run tournament and give lessons. The owner and staff treat me well and the pool hall is thriving and has the state of art equipment. The owner just replaced 16 valley bar tables with Diamonds. He even switched out the lights to the Diamond Lights, which looks classy. He has worked on getting the 4.5 x 9 tables changed over to the Dia-monds also. He and the staff keep the pool hall very clean and running well. I always play in the railed off players arena which has three matching 4.5 x 9 Diamonds.

Favorite gamesI enjoy 8 ball on a bar box table (3.5 x 7). I

love the strategy and having to play pinpoint position at all times.

Major AccomplishmentsI have played many great players, but two do stand out. I beat Vilmos Foldes and Rodney Morris on the Mezz tour.

Titles over the years 2005 Florida VNEA State Championship unde-feated 2015 – Runner up in Diamond Pro Tour 9 ball event 2014 / 2015 SW Regional 8 Ball Champion-ship – undefeated back to back 2014 – Runner up in Mezz tour stop 9 ball in San Diego CA2014 – Runner up Desert Classic Tour Finale

League skill levelCurrently AZ rating system 10-1APA –7 in 8 ball and level 9

Why do you play pool? I love this game because no matter how much or how long you play, you can always learn a new shot or ways to improve your game. This game also keeps me out of trouble.

In view of the many league choices available to players these days, it might be considered unadvisable for anyone to try and start a new, independent league. Especially one that is radically different from traditional leagues. But that’s just what Mike Bates at Bull Shooters did with his Masters Pool League. And now that the first session is successfully in the books, it must not have been such a poor idea after all.

Some of the things that set the Masters apart from other leagues are: it’s open to all skill levels; there are no handicaps involved; there is no possibility of “stacked” teams (new teams are formed by draft at the start of every new ses-sion); each week’s play involves both 8-Ball and 9-Ball; players compete as both singles and doubles each week; and big payouts are awarded to the top teams.

Some of the players were a bit apprehensive over the new format at the begin-ning of the season, but by the end, virtually everyone agreed that the Masters is the most fun and interesting league they have ever played in. As testament to that, nearly all showed up for the end-of-season awards banquet even though half of them were getting no money back. Of course, the fact that Mike Bates always provides a first-class food spread for all of his leagues had a little some-thing to do with that.

Taking First-Place honors and the top prize of $2,000 in Session #1 was the team of Trevor’s Trompers, consisting of Trevor Long (Capt.), Abie Padilla, Kyle Frey, and Bill Bluhm.

Following in Second-Place with $1,000 was Bryan’s Brawlers, consisting of Bryan Bach (Capt.), Joe Nicita, Kevin Muchow, and Tim Spencer.

Third-Place and $600 went to Frank’s Fryers, consisting of Frank Alvarez (Capt.), Adan Kroll, Brian McGee, and Mike Montgomery.

And in Fourth-Place with $400 was Ken’s Kickers, consisting of Ken Alvarez (Capt.), Sara Miller, Perfecto Diaz, and Derek Hover.

Session #2 will see a few new captains and a totally different mix of teams. The draft will take place on May 12, and the new season will kick off on May 19.

The Choke Factor

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

Last month I offered my thoughts on what it takes to be consistent. I gave the formula, con-fidence + concentration = consistency. This month, we need to talk about a mental activity that totally disrupts the efficient employment of that formula. The “mental activity” I speak of is called “choking.”

To choke in pool means you cave in to pres-sure and miss shots – particularly key shots – because you tried too hard to make them. Say what? Tried “too” hard? Yes, you tried too hard.

You need to understand this: pressure can cause doubt and fear, and those two emotions can cause muscles to tense up and judgment to be impaired. And those are not good things. You must be loose and relaxed to play your best pool. You must be able to shut off your conscious mind and let your subconscious mind and body work together to do what they’ve been trained to do. If you can’t do this, you’re going to choke.

Years ago, I was spectating a tournament in Tampa, FL which featured many of the world’s best players of that era. Next to me sat Ray Martin, and in front of me sat Jimmy Reid. We were all watching a match between Jose

Parica and one of Tampa’s top short-stops. The short-stop was handily leading the match when Jimmy Reid, in a rather matter-of-fact manner, predicted to the rest of us that he would still lose. The guy sitting next to Jimmy asked him why he thought that. Putting both hands to his own neck, Jimmy said, “It’s the choke factor.” Turned out, he was right; the short-stop lost.

Sometimes, no matter how much you practice, you can find yourself having to deal with the “choke factor.” It wants to show up when-ever you venture into unchartered territory. For example, whenever you find yourself up against a known champion for the first time, the choke factor may just jump up and bite you in the butt. You might start wondering what the champion thinks of your game, or what do you have to do to beat this guy (or gal)? Those thoughts, and others like them, will never do you any good.

Another time the choke factor rears its ugly head is when players find themselves on the big stage for the first time. Maybe they’re play-ing one of those champions again, only this time, it’s in front of a large crowd and with a live-stream camera running. A situation like that can create a lot of pressure. It can cause the mouth to go dry and the hands to become

sweaty. It can cause tension to creep down the neck and into the shoulders, arms and hands. It can give rise to fear and cause the player to doubt his own ability to perform well. If all that happens, it’s CHOKE time!

So how do you avoid the Choke Factor? Well, I’m not sure you can ever avoid it altogether. I believe the most you can do (outside of using “medications”) is to lower the probability of choking by doing what professionals do – stay under the gun. Yes, practice is good, but prac-tice alone doesn’t cut it. You can’t be avoiding high-pressure situations if you really want to be good. As a matter of fact, you need to seek them out and embrace them. You need to get to the point where you look at high-pressure situ-ations as your “fifteen-minutes of fame;” your “moment in the sun.” After all, you’ve worked for it, you’ve waited for it, and you’ve earned it.

Steele & Brown Win At Kittys

Manny Steele & Jim Brown beat Chet Lahti & Randell Moore two out of three matches to win Kittys’ 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 2nd.

The first time these teams met up, it was for the hot-seat, with Chet & Randell scoring the 8-4 win.

On the one loss side, Manny & Jim beat Emmitt Webb & Travis Hagemeier 7-3 to earn another shot at Chet & Randell in the finals.

The first set of the finals went to Manny & Jim with a lopsided 7-1 scoreline. The second set was much closer though. Chet & Randell jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Manny & Jim came back to tie things at 4-4. The match went to hill-hill, before Manny & Jim pocketed the final 9-ball for the 7-7 win.

Complete Payouts:1st Manny Steele & Jim Brown $4502nd Chet Lahti & Randell Moore $2203rd Emmitt Webb & Travis Hagemeier $70

Team Moore at Kittys

Randell & Robert Moore teamed up for first place at Kittys’ 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 23rd.

Team Moore took the hot-seat with a 7-4 win over Ebony Kelly & Tony San-chez.

On the one loss side, Kyle Frey & Adam Langley were on a roll. After a loss to Randell & Robert in their first match, Kyle & Adam won four straight matches to earn a rematch with Team Moore in the finals.

Any momentum that Kyle & Adam had going for them, was quickly defused as Randell & Robert won the first (and only) match of the finals 7-3, for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Randell & Robert Moore $3602nd Kyle Frey & Adam Langley $1653rd Ebony Kelly & Tony Sanchez $55

Webb & Williams Dominate At Kittys

Emmitt Webb & Mark Williams dominated a field of sixteen teams to win Kit-tys’ 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 30th.

Webb & Williams barely had time to get comfortable in their hot-seat match, as they ran over Joe Santa & Chet Lahti 8-1.

Things went from bad to worse for Santa & Lahti, as then they lost to Lewis Higgins & Mark Norman hill-hill, and were forced to settle for third place.

The finals went one set, and Higgins & Norman didn’t fare much better against Webb & Williams, as Emmitt & Mark scored an 8-3 win for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Emmitt Webb & Mark Williams $5552nd Lewis Higgins & Mark Norman $2803rd Joe Santa & Chet Lahti $1354th Andy Benavidez & Adam Kauffman $40

I can’t remember the exact time that I first saw Ernesto Dominguez play, but I think it might have been at the 1993 Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge, PA. All I know for sure is, I was super-impressed with the man.

Ernesto Dominguez is the consummate pro. A few of the descriptive terms that can easily be attributed to this man are: neatly dressed, cleanly groomed, well mannered, quietly respectful, superbly confident, and extremely skilled.

Despite making the most of every opportunity to watch Ernesto play over the years, I really never had the opportunity to actually meet and talk with him. That is, until recently.

It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I learned Ernesto has a major talent other than just being a top player. His other talent? He’s a top pool table techni-cian. In fact, he is considered to be one of the best – if not the best – table man in the entire country.

In April, Mr. Dominguez came to Phoenix to work on the Brunswick Gold Crown tables at Bull Shooters Billiards. That’s where I finally met him, as I own and operate the pro shop there. Ernesto’s job in Phoenix came right on the heels of his 16-table upgrade at Johnny Archer’s Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA. He hadn’t even had any time to rest at his home in California between jobs. But as you will soon see, “rest” is a foreign word to Ernesto Dominguez.

Ernesto’s assignment at Bull Shooters was the same as almost everywhere else he works: make the Gold Crowns play “right.” Because of design changes made by Brunswick in recent years, and because of changes made by not-so-knowl-edgeable table mechanics (including myself) when working on them, Gold Crowns have lost their status as the world’s best playing pool table. Ernesto excels at putting them right again.

Ernesto Dominquez’s “day” starts at 1:00AM and ends at 5:00PM. The proce-dure for one table is thus: break the table down by removing the apron bolts, rail bolts, and pocket bolts. Next, strip the old cloth off of the rails and bed by removing over 700 staples. Next, strip the old rubber cushions off of the rails; rebuild the rails for proper pocket openings; install new, high-grade rubber cushions; and then install new rail cloth. Then check and relevel (if necessary) the slate bed, and clean and refill the slate seams. Lastly, install a new bed cloth, and finish up by reassembling the table. Ernesto usually puts two tables through this process at the same time, and the length of time required is 16 hours – the length of one of his normal work days.

Having recovered a couple hundred pool tables myself, I know the pain table work can inflict on a body – particularly an older body. One morning, I asked Ernesto, “Doesn’t it hurt your back to do this kind of work?” He quickly re-plied, “Yeah! My back, my legs, my hands, it hurts everything!” But, as he went on to explain, he has no other choice. He knows that decent-paying jobs do not abound for older men (he will soon be 61).

Every day during Ernesto’s stint at Bull Shooters, he was approached by curi-ous onlookers who wanted to make his acquaintance and pick his brain. And through it all, he politely endured their interruptions and answered every ques-tion they threw at him.

Even I – or maybe, especially I – was not immune from the temptation to ask questions of Ernesto. Although I tried to pick times that would not interfere too much with his work I still felt guilty about talking to him because I knew how much I hated to be interrupted whenever I worked on tables. But Ernesto didn’t seem to mind. He said, “Ah, I need a break, anyway.”

And, boy, am I ever glad now that I got those golden moments with the great Ernesto Dominguez! I heard some of the most amazing stories from this man. I learned how he was born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, and went to work in a pool room there as a “shine-shoe” (as he called it) at the age of 13. From that start, he began helping out around the room in exchange for table time. That’s also when he got into working on pool tables because, one day, the owner asked him to recover one of the tables. Ernesto told him he didn’t know anything about recovering pool tables. The owner said, well, just give it a try. So, in typi-cal Dominguez fashion, he did. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Ernesto also told me about the years he spent in Japan playing all challengers for money, and never once losing. And he said it was during that same time that he discovered a layered tip being manufactured there that was far superior to anything he had ever used. He said he pounded the cue ball with that tip over and over, just trying to get the tip to miscue. But it never did! And that’s how Ernesto Dominguez came to be the first person to ever bring Moori tips to America.

Ernesto’s experience with Moori tips led to a long interest in tips, in general. He doesn’t like to leave questions unanswered, especially when it comes to something as important to professional players as the tip. So he studies tips. He studies their glues, their materials, and their properties. He has learned so much

about tips that he was even able to offer a plausible explanation as to why I’ve been experiencing early failures with one particular tip that I sell quite regular-ly. Now mind you, I’ve been installing tips commercially for over 25 years, so I’m supposed to be the one to supply those answers – or at least be able to get the answers from manufacturers – and yet, here I was getting the answers from a pool player/table technician.

Another amazing story of Ernesto’s describes the time he was hired to set up and cover 16 pool tables in Puerto Rico for a big tournament there. The time allotted by the promoter to do the job was only forty-eight hours! Now that’s one man and six-teen tables in two days. But he not only got the job done – he played the tournament afterwards!

That’s why it came as no surprise – when after working on pool tables in Phoenix at sixteen hours daily for four days straight – that Ernesto Dominguez returned to Bull Shooters the morning after completion and entered a tough 94-player tournament where he finished in the money at ninth place. The only real surprise was that he did it with a borrowed cue!

Ernesto told me a few other stories about himself that are just as amazing as the ones I’ve shared here. But by now I think you get the idea. When it comes to pool, Ernesto Dominguez is not just another knowledgeable man — he is THE man!

28 players from around the Valley showed up for Sophia Morquecho’s novel new 6Pocket tournament at Stingers Saturday, April 30. It was match play format with each player shooting seven alternating racks. Players racked their own, broke wide open, and ran the table until they missed. One point per ball and highest point total won. It was also handicapped with lower rated play-ers getting 5 extra points per rating level. Interestingly, the cross-level matches were much tighter with the spot than same-level matches with no spot.

Tournament highlights included Aaron Purdy’s near perfect 104. Aaron rattled his 15th ball in the first rack and then went on to run six perfect racks. Chuck Parrill had the second highest string with five perfect racks in a close match with Oscar Avila Sr., that he actually lost by one point. Joe Nicita and several other players strung 4 perfect racks. Eight rated Mike McGovern went straight to the hill undefeated. Ed Scott lost his second match to Aaron Purdy, after starting his first two racks with a total of two points, but went on to win seven matches on the one loss side and then won the first set in the finals. Ed and Mike called it quits at that point and decided to share the Arizona State 6Pocket title as co champions.

Complete Payouts:1st/2nd Mike McGovern $3551st/2nd Ed Scott $555 (w sides) 3rd Aaron Purdy $2404th Oscar Avila Jr $170 (great tournament by 6 rated player)5th Pete Barrios $655th Matt Kostella $65
