7 Tuesday 7:00 PBS NEWSHOUR 8:00 THE POISONER’S HANDBOOK: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

— A fi lm based on the best-selling book by Deborah Blum explores how forensic chemistry was used in the early 20th century to convict murderers. In that era, the average American medicine cabinet was a would-be poisoner’s treasure chest. The scientifi c knowledge to detect and prevent the crimes lagged behind industrial innovations that expanded poisoners’ tools of the trade. This changed in 1918, when New York City hired its fi rst scientifi cally trained medical examiner, Charles Norris. Over 15 years, Norris and his chief toxicologist, Alexander Gettler, turned forensic chemistry into a sci-ence, setting the standards that the rest of the country would ultimately adopt. THE 1970s — The 1970s were a mix of gloom and glitter. The queen and Prince Philip celebrated 25 years of marriage, and their daughter, Princess Anne, wed. But the troubles in Ireland spread to mainland Britain; strikes, a fuel crisis, and food shortages led to mount-ing discontent across the country and the long, hot summer of 1976 brought civil unrest. In 1977, the queen’s Silver Jubilee revived the nation; while Royal tragedy followed with the assassination of Prince Philip’s uncle, Earl Mountbat-ten. After Margaret Thatcher became the fi rst female prime minister in

British history, the two most important positions in the country were now occupied by women.
