We at WETA work very hard to consistently produce and broadcast the fi nest programming on behalf of the public. When we receive accolades for our high-quality work and dedicated service, you — our members and

partners — can share in our tremendous pride, for your support makes our efforts possible, and these honors refl ect the vitality of your home-town public broadcasting station.

I am delighted to report that at the local 52nd Emmy Awards ceremony on June 5, the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and

Sciences will bestow the 2010 Board of Governors Award upon WETA’s public affairs series Washington Week with Gwen Ifi ll and National Journal in recognition of com-munity service and for enduring “outstanding achievement and unique accomplishment.” Coming on the heels of Washington Week’s 2009 Peabody Award, this local recogni-tion is another great honor for the series’ hardworking team. Another special award from the NATAS-NCCB will induct WETA studio supervisor and technician Glynda Bates into the prestigious Silver Circle, which honors individuals devoting 25 years or more to the broadcasting industry who have made outstanding contributions to television in Greater Washington.

Congratulations to Washington Week and to Glynda — and to the WETA Emmy nominees announced at press-time for the acclaimed TV 26 documentary Washington in the 60’s — and thank you, our members, for your support.

Sharon Percy Rockefeller, President & CEO, WETA

Screening of Film About D.C. Planner Daniel Burnham WETA members are invited to a special screening of the fi lm Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham & the American City, a new documentary that explores the life and legacy of the visionary architect and city planner (1846–1912). WETA will present the fi lm to PBS stations nationwide for broadcast on September 13. A century ago, Daniel Burnham helped develop a plan for Washington, D.C. that shaped the National Mall that we enjoy today. Burnham also developed plans for Chicago, Cleveland and San Francisco — and Manila in the Philippines — among other cities. The outdoor event will take place on Wednesday, June 9, at 8:30 p.m. on the National Mall at 4th Street in the same location as “Screen on the Green.” The fi lm screening, a rain-or-shine event, is free and open to the public. Speakers include Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama. For more information, please visit weta.org/burnham.

America’s history sleuths are back to prove once again that an item found in an attic or backyard might be anything but ordinary as the eighth season of the popular series History Detectives gets underway this month. The programs kicks off June 21 with an episode spotlighting America’s forays into space exploration. Historian and architecture professor Gwendolyn Wright (clockwise from top left); professor of sociology and Africana studies Tukufu Zuberi; appraiser Wesley Cowan; and appraiser and art historian Elyse Luray return this season, traveling around the country to explore the stories behind fascinating objects. Rejoining the team this year is a fi fth host, professor of history and American studies Dr. Eduardo Pagán (lower left) — formerly a series guest host.

The interactive series combines the latest in forensic technology with old-fashioned diligent research. Viewers generate the majority of the stories investigated: if you have an object that might have had an interesting role in American history, you can submit your story through the History Detectives website, pbs.org/historydetectives.

History Detectivesairs Mondays at 9 p.m. beginning June 21 on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Join Filmmaker Ken Burns at the June 8 Nationals Game WETA members are invited to come out to Nationals Park on June 8 to see the Washington Nationals take on the Pittsburgh Pirates and watch fi lmmaker and WETA partner Ken Burns (at right) throw out the fi rst pitch. You can purchase discounted tickets for the game and have an opportunity to meet Burns, who is visiting the Nationals to promote his upcoming fi lm The Tenth Inning, a co-production with WETA that premieres in September. For details about the event, visit weta.org/baseball.

Baseball — The Landmark 1994 Ken Burns FilmEpisodes from the Florentine Films/WETA production

air Wednesdays, June 30, July 7 & July 14 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

In June and July, WETA Television re-broadcasts three “innings” of Ken Burns’s monumental nine-episode 1994 series Baseball, a co-production with WETA. The three episodes slated for summer airings feature classic baseball stories from the Great Depression through the 1950s. The fi rst broadcast, airing Wednesday, June 30, is Inning 5 — Shadow Ball — which spotlights baseball during the Great Depression, Babe Ruth’s fading career, and a new era of stars including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. It also presents the parallel world of the Negro Leagues.

The three Baseball innings are airing this summer as part of the lead-up to the September 28–29 premiere of Burns and co-director Lynn Novick’s follow-up fi lm, The Tenth Inning, a new two-part, four-hour documentary created in partnership with WETA. The fi lm takes the Baseball series from the 1990s to the present and explores the sport’s new Golden Age, an era of unprecedented home-run totals, popularity and prosperity — and some of baseball’s darkest hours: the steroid era.

In public television’s most popular series, specialists from the country travel throughout the United States

offering free appraisals of antiques and collectibles. Antiques Roadshow’s cameras watch as owners recount tales of acquiring items — family heirlooms, yard sale bargains and attic or basement salvages — while experts reveal the fascinating truths about these finds. Mark L. Walberg hosts.

This month, Antiques Roadshow features a special edition spotlighting famous people through objects con-nected to their lives. “Fame and Fortune” features a stellar lineup of appraisals: highlights include the first mask worn by Clayton Moore, in 1951, as television’s Lone Ranger; a collection of photos and memorabilia (at right) documenting Marilyn Monroe’s transformation into a screen siren; James Dean’s 1948 high school junior yearbook; signed souvenir photos of Wild West legends Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill; a life

mask of Abraham Lincoln, found in an attic; and much more.

Don’t miss a chance to have one of your prized

Sid the Science Kid, Saturdays at 12:30 p.m.on the WETA Kids Channel

SciGirlsairs Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. on the

WETA Kids Channel

SciGirls, a new science series that premiered in February, is designed to change how 8–12-year-old girls think about science, technology, engineering and math. (That spells “S.T.E.M.,” a very hot topic in U.S. education today.) Each half-hour episode fol-lows a different group of bright, curious girls — mentored by successful women professionals — putting real-world science, technology, engineering and math to work, collaborating, communicating, engineering and discovering. They’re joined by two animated characters — a plucky SciGirl named Izzie and her best friend Jake, who tie the series together with their ongoing adven-tures. SciGirls integrates TV and the Web: each episode begins on the site’s homepage, where Izzie goes when she fi nds herself in jams that only science can fi x. She surfs to the site, jumps into a video of real SciGirls, and follows their story, learning and exploring every step of the way. At the series online destination, pbskidsgo.org/scigirls, young viewers can share their ideas and projects.

Funding for SciGirls is provided by the national science Foundation with additional support from exxonmobil.

Chopin Month on Classical WETA

Marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, Classical WETA 90.9 FM, in partnership with the Embassy of Poland, presents Chopin Month. This celebration of the great master of Romantic music on Classical WETA in June features a special emphasis on performances of the composer and virtuoso pianist’s works recorded live in the Washington area this year. Chopin recordings will be broadcast as part of Classical WETA’s local concert series Front Row Washington and elsewhere throughout the June radio schedule.

Among the presentations is an all-Chopin recital of nocturnes, waltzes and mazurkas performed by the distinguished Polish pianist and teacher Ewa Poblocka, recorded live at the National Gallery of Art this past March. Poblocka is an international performer and recording artist

who holds top awards from distinguished piano competitions and has appeared with a host of ensembles in venues around the globe.

Also, the 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Sofya Gulyak plays

Chopin’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 4 in a concert at the Phil-lips Collection. Other concerts recorded at the Embassy of Poland, the National Gallery of Art, and the Music Center at Strathmore round out Classical WETA’s observance of Chopin’s birth bicentennial.

Opera in JuneJune performances on Classical WETA Opera House, airing each Saturday at 1 p.m., are from National Public Radio’s World of Opera, hosted by Lisa Simeone, and include: Verdi’s acclaimed Don Carlo (June 5) by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Handel’s satirical comedy Agrippina (June 12) by La Fenice/Teatro Malibran, Venice; Massenet’s version of Manon (June 19) by the Vienna State Opera; and Respighi’s spectacular Marie Victoire (June 26) by the German Opera, Berlin.

Choral Showcase CelebratesRichard Hickox in June

Sundays at 9 p.m.Throughout June, Classical WETA 90.9 FM cel-ebrates the work of Richard Hickox (1948–2008) on the Sunday night broadcast Choral Showcase. Hickox was an English conductor of choral, orchestral and operatic music who is recognized for his major, often nearly single-handed efforts to bring to the public important 20th-century British choral and orchestral pieces and operas.

Choral Showcase this month highlights Hickox recordings of major English works including Brit-ten’s War Requiem, Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, plus non-English pieces too. In the schedule are Mahler’s (rarely performed) Klagende Lied, and works by Haydn, Brahms and Vivaldi.

Hickox was, by all accounts, an extremely busy man. He founded the City of London Sinfonia (1971), the Wooburn Singers (1967), the Richard Hickox Singers and Orchestra (1971), and co-founded (with Simon Standage) Collegium Musicum 90 (1990). In addition, Hickox held positions of leadership at the Endellion Music Festival (1972–2008), St. Margaret’s, Westminster — the church of the Houses of Parlia-ment (1972–82), the London Symphony Chorus (1976–91), the Bradford Festival Choral Society (start-ing in 1978), the Northern Sinfonia (1982–90), BBC National Orchestra of Wales (2000–06), and Opera Australia (2005–08). He was associate guest conductor of the London Symphony (1985–2008), and Music Director of the Spoleto Festival (Italy) for fi ve years in the 1970s.

Despite all this energetic activity, Hickox’s work and recordings were widely praised and awarded. And in addition to his prolifi c work, he was known to be an ex-uberant and good-humored fellow. Musicians enjoyed working with him, not least because of his complete lack of pretension. His conducting style was similarly unmannered, but always effective and heart-felt. Enjoy his recordings on Choral Showcase this month.
