W TA FocusOne need look no further back than the last few decades in our nation’s history for a reminder that American society has given rise to prominent political dynasties. In recent years, we have become accustomed to familiar surnames, exerting a powerful impact on the nation from the corridors of power. One must look back more than a century, however, to learn the story of the family that has infl uenced modern Americans like no other: the Roosevelts.

From the projection of American might abroad, to government activism at home, from leadership through some of the nation’s greatest challenges, to the assertion of human rights around the globe, the Roosevelts’ legacy is stunningly profound. Nearly a century on, even as we celebrate the many achievements of presidents Theodore and Franklin, and the enormous moral leadership of Eleanor Roosevelt, we as a people remain engaged in white-hot political debate about the Roosevelts’ redefi nition of both the role of government and America’s role on the international stage.

Illuminating the extraordinary story of these three towering historical fi gures and their impact on America is the monumental new series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History from longtime WETA partners fi lmmaker Ken Burns and writer, historian and Roosevelt scholar Geoffrey Ward. The seven-part, 14-hour fi lm, nearly fi ve years in the making, is the latest in the remarkable series of landmark Florentine Films productions created in collaboration with WETA.

Surrounding the September 14–20 premiere of Ken Burns’s major new series, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, this month WETA TV 26 and WETA HD reprise several of the fi lmmaker’s previous works, created in a decades-long production partner-

ship with WETA that has brought to the American public some of the most acclaimed documentaries in television history. Airing throughout Labor Day is the complete six-part, 2009 series The National Parks:

America’s Best Idea (September 1, 5:30 a.m.–6 p.m.), the story of the parks and the people who devoted themselves to saving these special places. The highest-rated and most celebrated fi lm in public television history, Burns’s nine-episode, 1990 fi lm The Civil War (September 14, 7:30 a.m.–8 p.m., leading into The Roosevelts premiere) explores the most important confl ict in American history. The fi lmmaker’s equally epic seven-part, 2007 fi lm The War (September 15–19, 1 p.m.), co-directed with Lynn Novick, tells the story of the American experience of World War II through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The popular two-part, 1997 fi lm Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery (September 16–17, 3–5 p.m.) follows the early 19th-century exploration of the West from St. Louis to the Pacifi c by the famed expedition. Also airing are The Statue of Liberty (September 5, 8:30 p.m.) and Burns’s most recent fi lm, The Address (September 15, 3:30 p.m.).

Caustic wit and man-about-town, James McNeill Whistler was the original art star. Famous for his patent leather shoes, monocle and uptown swagger, Whistler’s theatrics attracted the curiosity of buyers and the attention of the critics. But beneath the high gloss and mannered style, the struggle of this pioneering genius to fi nd his own voice resulted in a breakaway style that moved painting towards abstraction and would revolutionize the art world in his time and beyond. Best known for the groundbreaking portrait of his mother, Whistler had become one of the most recognized artists in Europe by the time of his death. He is now placed in the fi rst rank of modern painters, his work compared to that of Velázquez and Rembrandt. the past 30 years, WETA and Florentine Films have col-laborated on more than 20 projects and produced more than 100 hours of landmark documentary programming. “I found my home three and a half decades ago at public television,” says Burns. “The fi lms I wanted to do are all multi-dimensional, all have many layers of meaning, all require sustained attention on the part of the viewer and there’s no place else on the dial than public television that permits that to happen. There’s no other station I’d rather work with than WETA. This is the 30th anniversary of my collaboration with WETA and I can’t imagine being anywhere else. It is a wonderful relationship that I can’t live without.”

“It’s also been my great fortune as a fi lmmaker to have been able to work with Geoff Ward for more than 30 years,” said Burns. “The Civil War and Baseball and Jazz and The War and Prohibition and The Roosevelts,they all come — along with many, many others — from Geoff’s pen.” Ward is an authority on Franklin Roosevelt. The author of two biographical volumes, A First-Class Temperament and Before the Trumpet, he is also the editor of Closest Companion, which revealed for the fi rst time Roosevelt’s close friendship with his distant cousin, Daisy Suckley. Ward’s interest in FDR grew in part from the fact that he, like FDR, is a polio survivor.

The StoryThe Roosevelts, narrated by Peter Coyote, follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore, a Republican, and later a Progressive, would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fi fth cousin, Frank-lin, a Democrat, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefi ned the relation-ship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefi ned, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of America’s national parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Nazi Germany, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. It is also a human story about love and betrayal, family, and personal courage and the conquest of fear.

On the Roosevelts“I had written books that argued that you couldn’t have FDR without TR, that these were members of the same family, and so making this production was a dream for me,” said Geoffrey Ward. “It’s a family story — they are in different political parties, but otherwise they have the same kind of upbringing and the same Rooseveltian view of the world — optimistic, enthusiastic and boundless.”

“The Roosevelts have played signifi cant roles in other stories we’ve told before, from the national parks to the Dust Bowl to World War II,” said Ken Burns. “It’s impossi-ble, in fact, to visit many parts of the American experience

without encountering their presence. We’d been thinking about doing something

specifi cally on Franklin Roosevelt for a long time,” said Burns. “Geoff Ward

and I decided that not only would we create a fi lm about FDR, we would focus on all three family members and make this an inter-related tale.”

“I think in many ways this is one of our most sophisticated

structures for a fi lm: intertwining these three ‘high-voltage’ personalities

into one production and doing it in a way in which their personal lives are not reduced

to melodrama,” Burns said. “It is an intimate history, but we’re not interested in the soap opera part of it. We’re interested in the complicated human dimensions and at the same time not wanting to sacrifi ce an awareness of the events of the 100-plus years during which they strode across the American stage.”

A Monumental TaskNearly fi ve years in the making, the production was a monumentally complex undertaking. “We are archival fi lmmakers; we make our fi lms come alive with still pho-tographs,” said Burns. “The Roosevelts represents one of the greatest archival detective pieces we’ve ever done.” Burns and the Roosevelts team at Florentine Films performed research at hundreds of libraries, museums and private collections around the country, gathering, for example, 25,000 images that were culled to the 2,300 that appear in the 14-hour fi lm. Hundreds of hours of newsreel and footage were assembled, and crews shot

nearly 20 hours of interview footage (of historians and fi rst-person recollections) and more than 20 hours of live cinematography at Roosevelt sites.

“We also have an amazing group of people con-tributing to The Roosevelts,” said Burns. In addition to on-camera interviews with Ward and other historians, a host of celebrity voice participants includes Meryl Streep portraying Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from her personal letters and writings; Paul Giamatti as the voice of Theodore Roosevelt; and Edward Herrmann, two-time Emmy Award nominee for his performances as Franklin Roosevelt, as the voice of FDR.

Exploring History, Raising Questions“The fi lm is a fairly complex narrative that takes three people, and some of their family members and relatives, and moves them through 104 years of American history,” said Burns. “But The Roosevelts also brings up extraordi-nary questions about things that we talk about today all the time: What is the role of government? What can a citizen expect of its government? What is the nature of leadership? How does character form leadership? How is character formed by adversity in life? What are the fl aws? Are we expecting perfection in our characters? Or do we understand that heroism is, in fact, a combination, a negotiation, sometimes a war between strengths and weaknesses?”

“I think the balance of all of that in the fi lm is hugely important,” said Burns. “The reason why these projects take many, many years, is because this is a kind of fi ne calibration on the part of a writer and fi lmmaker trying to get the balance correct. So The Roosevelts was a huge challenge, but I don’t know of a fi lm that’s been more satisfying to make.”

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren stars in her signature role as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison of the London police in the acclaimed, long-running drama series Prime Suspect. The fi rst production of the gritty drama, which premiered in 1991, follows the non-nonsense detective as she undertakes the management of her fi rst major murder case with a team of investigators, coming up against rampant sexism while trying to catch a killer and prove herself in her male-dominated workplace, where many of her colleagues and supervisor are determined to see her fail. Series I features Tom Wilkinson, Zoë Wanamaker, and Ralph Fiennes in a minor role. The acclaimed Prime Suspect productions, which follow Tennison’s career through seven seasons, won multiple Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards and a Peabody Award.

One of the most popular Masterpiece productions, the original House of Cards series, a tale of greed, corruption, and burning ambition in British politics, starred Ian Richardson in a BAFTA-winning role as Machiavellian monster Francis Urquhart, a ruthless villain with a smiling countenance. Written by celebrated Masterpiece screenwriter Andrew Davies, this four-part fi rst series in the House of Cards trilogy was adapted from a bestselling novel by Michael Dobbs, a former politico whose career included a stint as an aide to Margaret Thatcher. The story follows Urquhart, the Chief Whip of a conservative party, as he schemes his way to the top of the political heap by systematically undermining and demol-ishing his rivals. Urquhart is aided, innocently, by a trusting young journalist (Susannah Harker) who, dazzled by his political acumen, does not comprehend his true nature.

One of the most successful BBC comedies ever, the classic 1982–1991 series ’Allo, ’Allo, from the writers of Are You Being Served?, stars Gordon Kaye (pictured, third from right) as René Artois, the proprietor of a small-town café in Occupied France during World War II and the most improbable French hero since Inspector Clouseau. In the storyline, the town of Nouvion has been looted of its artifacts, and two German offi cers have prevailed upon Artois to stash some artworks for them. He has hidden them is his cellar, in sausages no less, but is being sniffed out by the Gestapo. René is also risking his neck by hiding two British airmen and a radio transmitter upstairs at his establishment, but his real problem is his wife, Edith, and what she will do to him if she discovers his affairs with his waitresses.

Mozart, Brahms and More on Choral Showcase

Regina coeli is a Latin Marian Hymn in the Catholic Church. It replaces Salve Regina at Easter time and in the weeks following Easter. The author is unknown, but the words date back at least to the 12th century. Various composers have set these words, but the best-known piece is by Mozart. His last setting, that is; in fact, Mozart wrote three different Regina coeli works. The third, K. 276, airs on Classical WETA’s Sunday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Choral Showcase on September 14. As you listen to this music, you’ll notice how similar Mozart’s setting of “Alleluia” is to Handel’s (in the famous cho-rus in Messiah). A little copying here? Probably not. At this point in his life — still in Salzburg — Mozart probably wasn’t yet familiar with Handel’s masterpiece. (Mozart certainly was later, proved by his excellent and often-used re-orchestration of Messiah, which he completed a few years before his death.)

Along with the Mozart setting on September 14, the entire program focuses on Regina coeli. There’s a lesser-known setting by Brahms, plus a 2002 setting by Julian Wachner, music director of The Washington Chorus and at Trinity

Wall Street. Musica Omnia has recently released a 3-CD set of Wachner’s music, including his Regina coeli. It is as brilliantly celebratory as those of the past, perhaps more so, in part because it’s more extensive, and because of the stunningly effective contrast of the slow movement that takes us back to the Renaissance.

Our Regina coeli program, with its Easter theme, also includes one of Bach’s many cantatas for the season, plus a bonus — Ned Rorem’s “Alleluia” performed by Susan Graham and Malcolm Martineau.

The week before, on September 7, an all-Mozart program features the com-poser’s Great C minor Mass, plus his two other settings of Regina coeli. They are entirely different works. On September 21, expanding on the brief Brahms work heard earlier in the month, is Baltimore Symphony Music Director Marin Alsop’s

recent recording (for Naxos) of Brahms’ German Requiem, with the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir and Orchestra.

September String Fling on Front Row Washington

Strings — hammered, bowed and strummed — offer musical delights this month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s local concert broadcast Front Row Washington. We kick off on Labor Day, Monday, September 1 at 9 p.m., with music for two guitars by Duo Amaral. Both graduates of the Pea-body Conservatory, guitarists Mia Pomerantz-Amaral and husband Jorge formed Duo Amaral in 2008. This John E. Marlow Guitar Series recital features their own transcrip-tions of Isaac Albéniz’ España, as well as Saggio per due Chitarre, a work by Jorge’s father, renowned Mexican composer Victor Manuel Amaral Ramirez. Transcriptions of César Franck’s Prelude, Fugue and Variation for Organ, Op. 18 and Handel’s popular Chaconne and Variations round out Duo Amaral’s program.

On Monday, September 8, Front Row Washington ob-serves Antonín Dvorák’s 173rd birthday with an all-Dvorák program from the National Gallery of Art. Well known for presenting new, young artists, The Phillips Collection recitals on Front Row Washington offer the U.S. debut of two musicians: Polish violinist Bartosz Woroch on Monday, September 22 and Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg on September 29. Mr. Woroch is joined by pianist Sam Armstrong for a wonderfully varied program of seldom-heard yet immensely refreshing works, includ-ing Francis Poulenc’s Violin Sonata, Op. 119 composed in 1943, Karol Szymanowski’s Mythes, Three Poems for violin and piano, Op. 30, and

Sir Edward Elgar’s E Minor Violin Sonata, Op. 82.We wrap up the month on Monday, September 29

with the U.S. debut of 2013 Queen Elisabeth Com-petition winner Boris Giltburg, who has just signed an exclusive contract with Naxos Records for a February 2015 release of Schumann piano works. His Phillips Collection program on Front Row Washington includes Rachmaninoff’s Ten Preludes, Op. 23, a powerful perfor-mance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 8 in B-flat Major, and Maurice Ravel’s iconic La Valse.
