During August and September, WETA’s production Washington Week with Gwen Ifi ll and National Journalis creating three special road shows — Election 2012 Town Hall Events — before live audiences. The Town Hall Events take place in Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida, on August 24; in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 31; and in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sep-tember 28. The fi rst two occur just prior to the two national political conventions, and the September event takes place just days before the fi rst Presidential Debate. W TA FocusAugust and early September herald, respectively, the Republican and Democratic conventions, where the political parties formally nominate their candidates for national offi ce, outline the principles for which

they stand, and share their vision for the nation’s future. At this important juncture in the quadrennial presidential election race, public broadcasting and WETA offer a very important service to the American people. Via special PBS NewsHour broadcasts, we present the nation’s most comprehensive, independent primetime television coverage of the conventions — helping educate and inform voters around the country about the candidates, the issues and the choices ahead in Election 2012. WETA co-produces PBS NewsHour, which originates from our Shirlington television studio each night, and as per tradition, we will play a vital role in bringing this year’s convention coverage to the nation.

For more top-fl ight reporting and perspective, this month, WETA’s acclaimed weekly news analysis program Washington Week with Gwen Ifi ll and National Journal mounts special road show Town Hall events before live audi-ences in the convention cities, illuminating the issues and exploring campaign developments among the news of the week. See below for details on these special programs.

For coverage of the campaigns, tune in to PBS NewsHour’s nightly broadcasts and special convention coverage; to Washington Week with Gwen Ifi ll and National Journal for weekly insights and special Town Hall events; and to other PBS public affairs programming on WETA Television.

Thank you for your support.

PBS Convention Coverage:A PBS NewsHour Special Report

Republican National Convention — August 27–30 at 8 p.m.Democratic National Convention — September 4–6 at 8 p.m.

PBS NewsHour convention coverage, a co-production with WETA, airs on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD and PBS stations nationwide

Long known for providing the most complete primetime television coverage of the national political conventions through many election cycles, PBS NewsHour again follows the proceed-ings at the party conventions with live broadcasts created by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and WETA. The NewsHour’s Gwen Ifi ll and Judy Woodruff co-anchor live, primetime gavel-to-gavel broadcast coverage from the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida (August 27–30), and from the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina (Sept. 4–5) as well as the Bank of America Stadium (Sept. 6), with reporting from the rest of the NewsHour team.

On the air, the special broadcasts (also available in Spanish) begin at 8 p.m. each night of the conventions and continue live until the conclusion of the proceedings at approximately 11 p.m. The coverage will be interspersed with analysis, interviews and commentary, including:

• Shields & Brooks – NewsHour regulars syndicated columnist Mark Shields and New York Times columnist David Brooks offer political analysis.

• Reports from the Convention Floor – Senior correspondents Jeffrey Brown and Ray Suarez provide live dispatches from the convention fl oors throughout the evening broadcasts. Brown will be at the Republican convention in Tampa and Suarez will be at the Democratic convention in Charlotte.

• Political Analysis – Stuart Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report and NewsHour political editor Christina Bellantoni offer perspective and analysis on key developments at the conventions.

• Historians – Presidential historians Richard Norton Smith and Michael Beschloss provide historical context of the candidates’ acceptance speeches on the fi nal night of each convention.

• By the Numbers – Andy Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, explores data to provide insight on what motivates each party’s activists and how voters identify with the parties.

• Listen to Me – PBS NewsHour showcases the voices of American voters through its year-long “Listen to Me” project asking about their concerns and the top issues driving them to the polls.

The NewsHour also presents extensive online coverage at pbs.org/newshour. Correspondent Hari Sreenivasan presents The NewsHour’s interactive digital map center and “NewsHour All Hours” — a 24-hour livestream that offers viewers an “all-access pass” to the conventions. The livestream coverage includes a morning debriefi ng with political editor Christina Bellantoni and co-anchors Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifi ll about the nightly convention agenda as well as their take on political news and events; a noon update with Hari Sreenivasan on convention events of the day; a daily online discussion between Mark Shields, David Brooks and Hari Sreenivasan about politics; and more.

Episode 2 of 7. When Things Get Tough (January 1943–December 1943). By January 1943, Americans have been at war for more than a year. The Germans still occupy most of Western Europe. In North Africa, American troops are overwhelmed at Kasserine Pass by Erwin Rommel’s seasoned veterans, but after George Patton assumes command, the Americans begin to advance. Across the USA, nearly all manufac-turing is converted to the war effort and women enter the work world en masse. The Allies tear a 45-mile gap in Hitler’s Atlantic Wall, but bog down in the Norman hedgerows for months before routing German forces during the summer. 9:00 THEWAR— Episode 6 of 7. The Ghost Front (December 1944–March 1945.) By December 1944, Americans have become weary of the cost of the war. In the Pacific, progress has been slow and costly. In Europe, Hitler launches a massive counterattack in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium and Luxembourg — the Battle of the Bulge. The Allies begin massive bombing raids on Germany; but before similar raids can begin on Japan, the airstrip on the island of Iwo Jima must be taken in desperate fighting. By mid-March 1945, at least the end of the war in Europe seems imminent, as American troops pour into central Germany and the Russians approach Berlin. {DVI} RepeatsWed8/8,1:30pm

9:00 THEWAR— Episode 7 of 7. A World Without War (March 1945–December 1945.) In the Pacific, the battle for Okinawa — the gateway to Japan — proves to be a hor-ror. In mid-April, Americans are shocked by President Roosevelt’s death. Meanwhile, as Allied forces push across Germany, Allied troops discover Nazi barbarism in the concentration camps. Finally, on May 8, Germany surrenders. The Pacific campaign continues, and in early August 1945, American planes drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of Japanese. Ballykissangelairs Sundays at 7 p.m., repeating Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

Set in a small, fi ctional rural village in the heart of the Irish countryside, the award-winning drama Ballykissangel explores how life revolves around the local church — with its fl ock of delightfully mischievous characters — and its next door neighbor and rival, the village pub. The early seasons follow the new, inexperienced priest, Father Peter Clifford (Stephen Tomkinson), who is not only young and open-minded, but also English. Father Clifford must contend with the long-established rural ways of the villagers and their eccentricities and superstitions. The focal point of dramatic tension is the confrontation and chemistry between the priest and the beautiful, stubborn pub owner, Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwan). Arthurairs weekdays at 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

on the WETA Kids channelA six-time Emmy Award-winner and winner of a prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, this daily, half-hour animated series, based on Marc Brown’s best-selling Arthur adventure books, shows how 8-year-old Arthur Read — an aardvark — and his friends use effective, age-appropriate problem-solving skills. Each episode consists of two independent stories focusing on themes and events central to children’s lives. Whether facing down a bully, worrying about a new teacher or being the very last person on earth to lose his baby teeth, Arthur and his friends manage to solve their cri-ses with imagination, kindness and humor. The show is set in the fi ctional American city of Elwood City, and revolves around interactions between Arthur, his friends and family. The series promotes literacy, placing a strong emphasis on the educational value of books and libraries as well as relation-ships with friends and family members.

Funding for Arthur is provided by public television viewers. Corporate funding is provided by Chuck E. Cheese’s.

Composers have been writing about death—its mystery, judgment, and those remaining here who grieve—for as long as there has been music. On Sunday, August 5, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly broadcast Choral Showcase returns to this often-considered subject, but with fresh ears.

Of the many settings of the Requiem, or Mass for the dead, Maurice Durufl é’s is much-loved but rarely recorded in the version with organ instead of orchestra — the version airing on Choral Showcase on August 5. The South Dakota Chorale’s recent fi ne recording (on Gothic) is the performance to be broadcast on Classical WETA.

Also airing on August 5, and on the same subject, is neo-romantic composer Richard Danielpour’s attractive Symphony No. 3, “Journey Without Distance,” which evinces Danielpour’s energy, intensity and serenity. The piece offers a triumphal ascent from the fear of death; the words are by Helen Schucman and William Thetford. The Seattle Symphony and Chorale recording airing on Choral Showcase was fi rst released by Delos, and recently re-issued by Naxos, in the American Classics series.

August performances are from World of Opera. Visit classicalweta.org for opera details.

From Schumann to Chopin, Griffes to Gershwin, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly local concert broadcast Front Row Washington — featuring world-class classical artists recorded live in performance in Greater Washington — offers something for everyone this month. On Monday, August 6 at 9 p.m. enjoy the intimate recital setting of Freder-ick, Maryland’s Downtown Piano Works, as Russian pianist Alexander Kobrin presents

sonatas by Mozart and Schumann. The August 13, 9 p.m. program features the

artistry of the young Korean violinist Hahn-Bin with pianist John Blacklow in a through-composed program of familiar works both classical and con-temporary. From Salut d’amour and Sabre Dance to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” this Candlelight Concert Society recital — recorded at Howard Community College’s Smith Theater in Columbia, Maryland — is the perfect antidote to the sum-mertime blues. On August 20 at 9 p.m., American

pianist Thomas Pandolfi ’s Phillips Collection performance features works by Chopin, Liszt and Scriabin, as well as his own improvisations on six melodies by George Gershwin. Front Row Washington closes the month on August 27 with a recital by Texas-born pianist Roger Wright at the National Gallery of Art. Wright, who is known in national Scrabble circles as champion Trey Wright, performs works by Griffes, Debussy, Ravel and Balakirev.

Front Row Washington is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
