Aaron Cash is the local boy from the South of Brisbane with a CV including some of the biggest hits in showbusiness.

As a dancer and actor, Cash has been involved in productions like Tap Dogs, movies like Titanic, Hook, Benjamin Button, and Saving Mr Banks plus TV shows like Terminator, Nip/Tuck and Scrubs. He has also toured the world as a dancer for Cher, and danced alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov. Not bad for a boy who hails from Cooraparoo.

But its his new role as a judge on the revamped So You Think You Can Dance that is giving Aaron the greatest reward, as it is immersing him in dancing, an artform that he loves more than anything.

Aaron knows Ipswich, and even though he is based in Los Angeles, he still misses home.

“I haven’t been to Ipswich for a long time, but I remember they used to produce amazing tap dancers for some reason…every person from Ipswich I worked with always had very fast feet!” Aaron said from his L.A. home.

“I’m from the Southside of Brissy, I grew up around Cooraparoo, and pretty much lived around there most of my life. I try to get back once a year whenever I can at least, I had a show which I was working on earlier this year which was good, but I do try to catch up with school friends and mates in Brisbane when I come back. I love the place.

“I still fill up the suitcase with vegemite and

Twisties for the trips back to America, I’m always begging mum to get me vegemite in the tubes, not the jar, everything is based on weight now and you can’t take too many jars of Vegemite if you do it that way!”

After many years as a dancer, there is one thing when it comes to making a career out of it, and that’s discipline. How does Aaron cope with what’s required to stay in shape?

“It doesn’t become natural when you’re eating as a dancer, I’m 45 and I have a mate who is 49. He isn’t eating bread, and I’m eating pizza, its like being a body builder, you know when you have a performance coming up you cut out the ice cream and sweets. I still like to stay in shape and feel good, its not so much second nature, but it’s more of a habit when I need to. Do you ever get used to it? I don’t know….I could be out with my wife having dinner, she’s having pasta and I’m eating salad. That part of it sucks.”

As one of the four judges on the reality show for Ten, Aaron is looking for something special when he sees dancers.

“These Aussie kids just blew me away, equal to anywhere in the world, and I’ve found that the boys outshine the girls. When I was younger boys didn’t dance, it seems things have changed.

“I look for several different things. Technique is important, but I’m looking for their relation to the music. Are they telling me a story? Are

they showing the passion? Some are full of energy, others show a quiet strength, like a pressure cooker.

“Passion is what you want to see though, we are only going to pick one winner, so what is it about that person that engages me….I want to be moved. Movement is how they express their emotion, how they feel, as they aren’t using words. When I see someone that is good, it means I want to get up on that stage and dance with them. When someone walks on the stage sometimes you can see straight away that passion. The really good ones are always going to get work, that’s for sure.

“Having Paula Abdul on the show gives it massive credibility. When I arrived in LA years ago she was the one I wanted to dance with. All those videos from Janet Jackson were down to Paula…she produced this masculine, sexy dance. She was the one who made it cool to be a male commercial dancer. All the judges are heavy hitting, they know their stuff.

“Nurturing is the key, we are there to grow the talent, to shape, and inspire any way we can.

“It’s really about giving back to this next generation, to push them on and get them up to the next rung. I’m not interested in being the bitchy judge or the grumpy judge, that’s not why I signed up for the show. I’m here to grow the talent. “

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the first day of the 2014 school year was an ideal time to remind parents of the urgent need to take care when driving and parking near schools.

“Illegal parking near school grounds presents an enormous risk to the safety of our kids,” he said.

“Kids don’t have the road safety sense adults do and illegal parking radically reduces driver visibility. This can often have tragic results and cause many near misses which are terrifying for both drivers and children.

“It is a problem that plagues all 39 schools in Ipswich and addressing it requires the combined efforts of the whole community including police, council and school communities.

“Now we are unveiling one of two new School Safe vehicles to encourage safer behaviour by motorists around schools.

“But ultimately it is about parents and carers doing the right thing and obeying parking directions when dropping off and picking up kids,” Cr Pisasale said.

Health and Community Safety Committee Chairperson, Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the campaign was made possible by council’s investment in technology upgrades to the patrol vehicles.

“These parking compliance vehicles are a result of a joint effort between council and SenSen Networks to design a system to streamline enforcement.

“New technology will play a central role in keeping our kids safe at the school gate. By working together to remind parents of vehicle safety around schools, we will make the schools safer for our kids.

“Obeying clearly signed parking directions is the responsibility of all drivers. We would rather not have to issue fines at all, but some drivers will no doubt get caught flouting the rules,” Cr Antoniolli said.

The Ipswich cinema competition for patrons just got even more interesting, with confirmation that Event cinemas will be moving into Orion Springfield Central.

Target and Coles will also join the Centre in late 2015, as part of the next stage of development expansion. Construction works are planned to commence next month and are targeted to complete in late 2015.

This follows Ipswich City Council approvals in December for the Centre’s next stage of development for a nine-screen cinema complex and a new discount department store. The Events Cinema complex will be the largest in the region with nine-screens in total, including two luxurious fully catered Gold Class auditoria with reclining armchair style seating and two VMax auditoria featuring new ultra-comfortable stadium-style seating, powerful digital surround sound and state-of-the-art giant digital screens.

It was only a few years ago Ipswich only had one screen in the R.T.Edwards building on East Street, and these new cinemas in Springfield will bring the total of screens in Ipswich to twenty nine!

Coles will bring in their latest large format store and general merchandise offer, while Target will offer one of their large format stores.

Councillor Paul Tully said Bunnings had the green light to proceed.

“Coming in at nearly 16,000sqm, compared with the 12,000sqm Masters store nearby, it will be one of the largest retail developments

in Springfield Central. “The site of the new warehouse is bounded

by the Centenary Highway, Southern Cross Circuit, Main Street and Sinnathamby Boulevard.

“Bunnings new Springfield Central store will include a retail warehouse, timber and trade supplies, garden centre, on-site café and a charitable fundraising and community service BBQ area.”

Susan MacDonald, Mirvac’s General Manager – Retail, said this new stage of development was part of Mirvac’s long-term master planning for the Centre: “We are delighted to announce that Event Cinemas, Target and Coles and around 80 additional retail stores will be joining Orion Springfield Central. The development represents an investment of $154.3m and will increase the centre’s entertainment and retail offer in response to customer feedback and population growth in the Greater Springfield region and trade area. We are committed to providing the best retail, entertainment and food offer to meet the needs of our customers, as well as strengthening the Centre’s position as a key community hub with enhanced facilities for the Springfield community.”

The Centre expansion will include around 80 new specialty stores including additional fashion, cafes and restaurants, as well as community services and conveniences. An additional 1200 car parks will be provided. The development is expected to create approximately 440 construction related jobs

Cinemas and Bunnings confirmed for Springfield

On Sunday 23rd February at 8:30am, Catalyst Church with the support of Cr Cheryl Bromage and Ipswich City Council, the Church will host the 3rd annual ‘Ordinary Heroes’ community event to honour both volunteers and community leaders that have made a significant contribution in the life of our community. 

“This is an opportunity to recognise the valuable contributions of those that have made Ipswich such a great place to meet,” said Cr Cheryl Bromage said who is a supporter of the event.

This event is open for all to attend and is a great way for you to show your appreciation to the often unseen and ordinary heroes that give so generously to our community.

Following this event will be your chance to hit the streets in Brassall and join hundreds of people from Catalyst Church to be part of Clean Up Australia Day from 10:15am.

The green bin collection service has been a huge hit with Ipswich residents over the last couple of years, with over 9,000 Ipswich homes using the service

City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said customers of the kerbside green waste collection service had led the way with their outstanding performance in avoiding contamination of the green waste service.

“The quality of the material presented in the green waste bins by residents has been excellent with very few contamination incidents observed since the service commenced,” Cr Bromage said.

“The few contamination problems that have occurred have been quickly resolved by discussing the problem with the relevant residents.”

Cr Bromage said the fortnightly kerbside green waste collection service had been operating since September 2011.

“The service commenced with 4465 customers and there are now 9145 households taking part in the service. Since commencement of this service, 4800 tonnes of green waste has been collected for composting.”

The green waste service currently accepts waste pruning’s and grass clippings, shrub waste, weeds, leaves and loose bark and transports the waste to a local composting operation for processing.

Cr Bromage said a 240 litre bin with a specially designed ventilated lid was currently used for the kerbside green waste service.

Cr Bromage said council had been conducting a trial of 360 litre green waste bins since mid-2012 to determine if the option of a larger bin should be offered to green waste service customers.

“This trial involving 30 residents has been determining the feasibility of introducing larger green waste bins to the city.”

Cr Bromage said council had now decided not to progress further at this stage with the introduction of the larger bins.

“We are looking at a number of options, and it is important they are fully explored before we make a decision about future bin sizes.”

Green waste service proves popular OUT AND ABOUT IN BLAIR

Around 30,000 families in Ipswich and the Somerset Region recently received a letter from the Australian Government Department of Health reminding them that children aged 2 to 17, will benefit from the former Labor Government’s dental package, Grow Up Smiling.

These children will find it as easy to go to the dentist as it is to go to their GP. Each eligible child is provided with $1,000 in dental benefits over two calendar years under this package which is now referred to as the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

The $1,000 will help pay for basic dental care, such as check-ups, x-rays, fillings, root canals and extractions.

This is good news for local children as we all know that poor childhood oral health leads to poor adult oral health. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule will ensure children have healthy teeth now so they have healthy teeth into the future.

2014 is now well and truly underway and Parliament has resumed this week. I will continue to represent the issues affecting residents in Ipswich and the Somerset

Open Day at Westside Christian CollegeWestside Christian College: Primary Campus has undergone significant expansion, and is open for learning in 2014

This year is proving another landmark year for Westside as it continues to grow as a school of choice for families in Brisbane and Ipswich, especially Goodna, Bellbird Park, Collingwood Park, Redbank Plains and Springfield.

Consisting of two campuses, the College caters for students from kindergarten all the way through to Year 12.

Over the years there have been movies that have defined how people see war and conflict. In the 1980’s Platoon defined Vietnan, and Three Kings in the 1990’s brought home the reality of the Gulf War.

In years to come, Lone Survivor will be remembered as one of the definitive movies of the Afghanistan conflict, and deservedly so.

Based on the bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, Lone Survivor tells the true story of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative who find themselves ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan.  

With a loss of communication, the four SEALs are faced with a moral decision when they are discovered by some goat farmers. Suddenly they are surrounded by a much larger force of Taliban ready for conflict. As they confront unthinkable odds together, the four men find reserves of strength and resilience as they stay in the fight to the finish. 

Mark Wahlberg stars as Marcus Luttrell, the author of the first-person memoir which this movie is based on. Starring alongside Wahlberg as the other members of the SEAL team are Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster, and their Commander is played by a bearded Eric Bana.

Early in the movie you get an insight into the life of a SEAL, with footage and photos during the credits of the extremes

which their training takes them through, and soon you get to learn about their lives before heading into the rugged mountains of Afghanistan.

This movie pulls no punches, telling the story as it happened. There is an amazing scene when the four SEALs are about to be discovered, and if you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be surrounded by people who want to kill you...knowing every breath could be your last, then you must see Lone Survivor.

While moving at a breakneck pace, you lose count of the times all hell breaks loose and while it can be confronting, you truly feel like you are in the middle of a real life battle.

I felt myself holding my breath at times watching this, as it is done in a way that allows you immerse yourself in what’s happening on screen. If you are tired of Hollywood hype and just want to see a true story as it really happened, then you will love this movie. I found it engrossing. See it on the biggest, loudest screen you can.

Bradbury is currently in Sochi, Russia, covering the Winter Games for Ten/ONE which is expected to be a huge ratings hit for the network as interest in the Winter Games gets bigger and bigger every year.

Ipswich Life spoke to the gold medallist just before he left for Russia, excited at the prospect of seeing our strongest team yet chasing glory.

“I totally agree that the Winter Games has got bigger and bigger in this country. Back in the 1990’s Australia was a numbers filler,” Steven said. “I was part of the team back in 1994 that won its first winter medal and that was a bronze in the 5000m relay. That was when we first started to put ourselves on the map.

“In the last decade we have won five golds, one silver and three bronze medals. We aren’t fillers any more. This current team has more medal potential than ever, and I would estimate that we will bring home four or five medals from this team.

“Keep in mind the whole team is full of quality, but the ones to watch are definitely Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin in the Snowboard Cross, Torah Bright in the Slopestyle and the Halfpipe and Lydia Lassila in the Ariels.

“They don’t underestimate us anymore. They know we have a quality program here in Australia, and we have a great system to nurture these athletes through the Olympic Winter Institute which kicked off in the late 1990’s but they have such small numbers they can get a lot more attention in their training, compared to summer sport athletes.”

Bradbury still lives in Brisbane, and spent over a decade training at IceWorld in Acacia Ridge, a rink that is still open every day, one of two rinks in South East Queensland.

“I used to train at IceWorld, or ‘The Big Fridge’ as I used to call it, I spent many hours of my life going round and around that rink. There’s another one at Boondall, I think we have enough for Brisbane, maybe a third would be nice. It feels like half my life was spent at IceWorld. It wasn’t the best ice rink in the world, but it was good enough for me

to train for the Olympics. “Bradbury became an instant Aussie hero,

winning his gold medal in one of the most famous moments in our nation’s sporting history, beating four other racers in the final of the 1000m Speed Skate. It’s a race that every sports fan knows only too well, and is the epitome of ‘never give up’. Ipswich Life asked if he feels it was a just reward for over a decade or dedication to his sport?

“People often ask me do I get annoyed that people think I only won the gold medal because the other guys fell over, but to be honest nobody actually says that to me. Most people are smart enough to realise that there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes whether its running a company or making the Olympic team, then making the final.

“There may be people sitting on the couch throwing poo in my direction, but you don’t make an Olympic final by putting on skates two weeks prior to the event.”

Speed is in Bradbury’s blood and he admits that one day he’d love to try the very fast, and very dangerous events like the Luge or Bobsled.

“In a heartbeat I’d do the Luge or Bobsled. I’ve always loved things that go fast, I love that adrenaline. In my head I think I’m the next Sebastian Vettel! There are places in the world where you can pay to ride bobsled as part of a team, but I reckon you’d just get in and put your head down, there’s not much else to do.”

Sochi will be cold...very cold, but one place that Bradbury visited pales in comparison when asked the coldest place he’s visited.

“I’ve been to some incredibly cold places in my time, but the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer….wow…..from memory I think the average temperature was minus 24 degrees every day. It sounds wierd but on days when it got to something like minus 6, you’d go out in a t-shirt!”

A Little Bit of Ipswich History

George Bullock served in the Australian Infantry Force during World War I as part of the Tunnelling Companies.

Primary tasks of the Tunnelling Companies were the construction of tunnels and mines for offensive action against the enemy, detection and interruption of the enemy’s counter-mining efforts, and the construction of underground dugouts to accommodate large groups of men. In many cases whole battalions of 1,000 men including Battalion Headquarters.

This photograph was taken while he was on duty in France and sent back to his family as a postcard.

George worked as a miner and was married to Ellen Bullock (nee Harris), they had two children and lived in Stafford Street, Booval

A number of popular Ipswich library programs aimed at young children will hit the road this year as part of a new program.

Councillor David Pahlke, said Council had received grant funding from the Australian and Queensland Governmenst under the Australian Early Development Index program.

“We have been awarded $8000 from the to run a family literacy program in Ipswich during February and March,” Cr Pahlke said.

“We are taking a number of our regular library programs and incorporating them into this special early literacy program.”

The new program will be delivered in Bundamba, Camira, Marburg/Tallegalla, Riverview, and One Mile/Leichhardt.

“These suburbs were selected based on identification in the AEDI data as communities that had the potential to most benefit from a targeted early literacy program.

The AEDI grant program is aimed at children

from birth to five years, and their families. It is designed to assist them to develop

their physical health and well-being, social competency, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills and their communication skills and general knowledge.

The AEDI is a population measure of a child’s development as they enter their first year of formal school based on information collected through a teacher-completed checklist that measures the five areas of early childhood development. Results are reported for the communities where children live, not where they go to school.”

Cr Pahlke said the library project would allow children and families who may not normally be library users to experience a range of early literacy programs.

The sessions will feature the following library programs:

*Baby Rhyme Time - A hands-on program for families with babies from birth to 18 months aimed at modelling, encouraging and valuing the introduction of songs rhymes and stories in everyday routines.

*Story time - An interactive storytelling session for children under six years aimed at developing a love of reading and stories from an early age.

*Readers Theatre - Traditional storybook favourites are brought to life through performance based storytelling.

*Seeds - A family-based literacy program to raise awareness and skills in parents about

the importance of reading to their children in developing strong literacy skills.

The program will also include a number of early literacy initiatives developed by other agencies and organisations that are currently delivered at our libraries as a:

*Story Sacks partnership program including: A Creche and Kindergarten (C&K) initiative aimed at developing and delivering resources and tools for families to support early literacy;

*Starting School Toolbox - A new initiative by C&K in partnership with Mission Australia aimed at providing information, practical tips and resources to assist families and children in the transition to school and;

*Let’s Read - A program implemented by the Smith Family to promote reading from birth.

Cr Pahlke said this is a great opportunity for families to discover and enjoy some of the free programs and activities that the library has to offer the local community.

The program would culminate in a final event at Ipswich Central Library in March. “This finale event will bring together people from each of the communities for morning tea, the presentation of participation certificates and the opportunity to experience the library and the services on offer.”

Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis (The original co-writers and director) are teaming up to write the script: Gale said: “The ‘Back to the Future Musical’ is a project that Bob Zemeckis and I have been exploring for almost 10 years.” Fingers crossed it’s successful in London and we’ll see it down under soon.

Speaking of movies turned musical, Brokeback Mountain: The Opera, premieres in Spain this month. The Oscar-winning love story actually debuted as a short story in a magazine in 1997.

Hollywood star Sam Worthington is set to star in an Aussie Miniseries about Gallipoli, to screen next year, for the 100th anniversary of the landings. ‘Deadline Gallipoli’ will tell the true story of a group of war correspondants who helped inspire the decision to end the military campaign. It’s being shot in South Australia.

Lily Allen said ‘No’ to crazy workouts before releasing her latest music video for Hard Out Here. Allen said she wanted to give her fans a glimpse into the life of a working mother: “I could be skinny if I wanted to, by exercising a lot, and I just don’t have the time right now. Every second I’m not working I’m spending with my children. For me to take another

extra hour and half out of my day to get thin, I’m not doing it.”

In a surprising casting move, Jesse Eisenberg (below) has been given the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman-Batman film. He’s previously appeared in movies The Social Network, Adventureland and as the voice of Blu the Macaw in the animated flick Rio. Director Zac Snyder says Einsenberg’s casting can take Lex Luthor into “some new and unexpected directions.” Jeremy Irons has also been cast as Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s Butler, and Ben Affleck as Batman.

Classic rockers Motley Crue (below) have announced their retirement, after plans for one last tour next year. After over 30 years of touring together, they symbolically signed a Cessation of Touring Agreement at a press conference earlier in the month, effective at the end of 201. No word yet on whether their final tour will include a visit to Australia.

And in the latest from Awards Season:Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby dominated the Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts Awards in Sydney, receiving a total of 13 trophies, including Best Film.

‘Her’ and ‘Captain Phillips’ won top honours at the Writer’s Guild Awards. Spike Jonzes’Her received the award for Best Original Screenplay and Captain Phillips for Best Adapted Screenplay.

With a career spanning 52 years, Australian actress Jacki Weaver was named the 39th recipient of the Raymond Longford Award, she also received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honours List.

French electronic duo Daft Punk (above) took out the top prize at this year’s Grammy Awards – winning Record of the Year and Album of The Year. Daft Punk took home a total of 4 trophies on the night, including Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Pop Duo/Group performance.

Kiwi Lorde, and her songwriting partner Joel Little won Song of The Year for their smash hit ‘Royals’. Lorde also picked up Best Pop Solo Performance. Other winners on the night included: Best New Artist – Macklemore; Best Pop Vocal Album Bruno Mars; Traditional Pop Vocal Album – Michael Buble; Producer of the Year (non Classical) – Pharell Williams.

A truly local beer this Lager gains its roots from the old Booval Brewing Company.It is inspired by the beer once produced in; and tapped all around the Ipswich CBD. Brewed by local Peak Crossing resident and Brewer of 4 Hearts Pale Ale, Wade Curtis took his inspiration from the style and the hop variety that was used when the brewery opened in June of 1898.

The brewery was decommissioned and the 35 foot tower was sent to Toowoomba leaving the Booval area, assume ably dry. But now we have brought it back!

For the taste, this is a true lager with a full on malt flavour which steps away from all the “regular” lagers that are on the “popular” market.

It asks more of you then to just throw it back on a warm day inviting you to taste the

subtle citrus notes and the odd but refreshing finish which leaves you asking “what is that?” after every sip.

This beer receives most of its flavour from the hop, which not many people will have tasted, coming from the old recipe the hop is scarcely used and from the brewers point of view, hard to find.

This is an easy and sessional beer which is sure to get us through the end of summer and ready for all the tastes that are sure to come from the cooler months, at a reasonable 5.0% alcohol content its one you will be able to enjoy as much as you like.

Late in 2013 the first aircraft transitioned from the Electronic Mate and Assembly System to the final assembly line at Fort Worth, the first time the aircraft stood on its own wheels.

Confidence is growing in Australia that, from a technical standpoint at least, the New Air Combat Capability (NACC) program will deliver under the latest timeline.

Outgoing head of the NACC program, Air Vice Marshal Kym Osley, said that from a hardware point of view, he saw the F-35A developing well. The Australian assessment, however, is that there is still about seven months of risk in the final software development.

“All software presents a risk, and this is the most complex software ever,” he said. “There is always the risk it is late or the capability deferred, and we’re very keen to keep a good eye on software and make sure we don’t see capability deferred and we don’t see any regression in the quality of software that we’re seeing being developed at this point.”

Osley said Australia is looking to declare initial operating capability (IOC), representing one operational squadron and a training unit, in Australia by the end of 2020. The military must retire the older Hornet fleet entirely by the end of 2022 if it wishes to avoid the cost and risk of a major structural refurbishment program. However, he said the minimum software requirement for IOC was the earlier 3I version, which the

Air Force pilots, operators and maintenance personnel are being tested to the limit at Exercise Red Flag at Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada Desert.

The air base may be close to Las Vegas but there’s no gambling in the cockpits of these fast jets, electronic surveillance aircraft and other combat related aircraft.

The RAAF deployed seven F/A-18 ’classic’ Hornets and an E-7 Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft, to ‘fight’ in the most realistic and sophisticated air combat exercise in the world.

This first major exercise of 2014 for the RAAF comprises two weeks of intense day and

night missions against real target sets and adversary representative fighters, and high-fidelity electronic and air defence systems over the Nevada Test & Training Range.

Red Flag has the reputation worldwide as the most advanced international air combat training activity in the world, providing pilots, combat controllers and intelligence officers with the most realistic and demanding tactical training available.

Red Flag 14-1 also involves squadrons from the USAF (F-22, F-16C/CM, F-15C, F-15E, B-2, E-3, B-2, EC-130, E-8, RC-135, HC-130, HH-60, KC-135), USN (EA-18G, P-3C, EP-3E), USMC (EA-6B) and the Royal Air Force (Typhoon and

Tornado).The exercise is hosted north of Las Vegas on

the Nevada Test and Training Range - the US Air Force’s premier military training area, with more than 15,000 square miles of airspace and 2.9 million acres of land.

With 1,900 possible targets, realistic threat systems and an opposing enemy force that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, Nellis AFB and the NTTR are the home of a simulated battlefield, providing combat air forces with the ability to train to fight together in a peacetime environment, and to survive and win together.

More than 125 aircraft are scheduled to

depart Nellis twice a day and aircraft may remain in the air for up to five hours. The year has recommenced and it’s time for a 2014 financial tune-up. Even if you’re not expecting an increase in income this year, you can still take control of your spending and save thousands. Start with a mortgage: with interest rates at their lowest in living memory, you can get a mortgage for around 5 per cent or lower, which makes it better to own than to rent in many scenarios. Not only do you replace rent but you build a long-term asset.

If you already have a mortgage, look at refinancing. By refinancing a $300,000, 30-year loan from 5.5 per cent to 5 per cent, you’ll save $100 per month in repayments. When you refinance to a lower rate, perhaps keep repayments at your old rate – you’ll pay off the loan faster and pay less interest.

Some people believe that taking a fixed rate mortgage for three years is a good bet because the low rates are locked in, but remember that borrowers rarely beat the capital markets. The variable rate is usually

the best way to go over the medium-term but if in

doubt, split a mortgage between fixed and

variable.Another way to

streamline your budget is to spend less on credit cards. If you have a

mortgage, ask your

lender about folding credit card and store card debt into your mortgage, so you’re paying 5 per cent rather than 15-20 per cent. It makes a material difference to your monthly outgoings and gives you more options.

If you have to wait before refinancing, have a look at the zero-interest balance transfers offered by credit card issuers. Most offer six, 12 or even 15 months interest free if you shift your current balance. You’ll save a lot, but don’t squander this interest holiday. Reduce the balance as much as you can.

Also look at monthly outgoings and ask if you’re paying too much, or if you’re getting value for money. Most organisations offer a range of products, hoping you take the most expensive. Look at the comparison sites, ring your provider’s competitosr or scrutinise what a new entrant to an industry is proposing.

Even grocery shopping is a chance to save money. Some supermarkets cost you 30 per cent less for the same shopping basket, so anyone can save $100 a month based purely on where they shop.

Most households can spend $300 less per month when they get focused, so make this the year you fine tune your finances.

Identify waste, find an alternative and do something about it. Good luck.

Toyota’s HiLux has notched up its ninth straight year as Australia’s best-selling four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, according to the latest national sales figures.

The tough workhorse led the way in 2013 with customers buying 29,344 HiLux 4WD variants, more than 7,500 sales ahead of its nearest rival. In doing so, HiLux established a new Australian record for 4WD sales in a single year, eclipsing the previous mark it set in 2012.

HiLux has just completed its 16th consecutive year as the country’s most prolific seller among all commercial vehicles,

including SUVs. The popularity of HiLux in 2013 was a

significant factor in total Australian sales of light-commercial vehicles (LCVs) passing 200,000 for the first time.

The final tally was a record 204,566 vehicles, an increase of 3.5 per cent. Toyota remained the dominant LCV market leader with 56,938 sales. HiLux 4x2 was the best-selling vehicle in its segment with 10,587 sales - more than 4,500 ahead of any other vehicle.

The new generation All-Wheel Drive WRX has arrived, unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, with an array of new features, technology and sporty style.

Since launch in 1992, WRX has become a global phenomenon – a distinctive sports car combining impressive performance with the practicality of a four-door sedan.

 WRX has a new high performance 2.0-litre Horizontally-Opposed Direct Injection turbo engine for high power with low emissions.

The DIT engine has vastly improved performance over the superseded 2.5-litre model. It produces a maximum 199 Kilowatts at 5600 rpm and 349 Newton metres of torque from 2000 to 5200 rpm,

while maintaining high environmental performance. It is the first time a manual transmission has been paired with the DIT Boxer engine.

The new optional Sport Lineartronic CVT provides greatly improved shift response, for a sportier ride than other CVTs, for higher torque. The nose cone is designed to produce a dynamic solid shape, starting with Subaru’s classic hexagonal grille. The new hawkeye-shaped headlights are paired with the aggressive wide and low style for which WRX is known.

WRX interior is all about high performance. The driver’s seat is designed to be like a cockpit - the moment the driver opens the door, they get transported far from their daily life. For the first time, WRX gets a D-shaped steering wheel for a sportier impression. The grip shape is easy to hold, with a small diameter for improved operability and tactile feedback, making for a more appealing driving experience.
