Specialized HR Consulting Services for Independent Schools

The Hirshorn Company, through its Human Resource Consulting Practice, has designed and delivered customized services to independent schools from New York City to Florida. During the past decade, working with independent schools, we are proud that our HR consulting services have expanded solely through word of mouth referrals from satisfied clients. A satisfied client, typically the Head of School (HOS), Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or the head of Human Resources is our best source for new projects.

We have built our HR consulting practice on the sound and practical premise of delivering high quality solutions specifically designed to meet a school’s priorities and increasing its effectiveness with school employees.

We have identified four target areas for our work with independent schools, including:

1. Coaching for the Head of School and his/her team.

2. Faculty initiatives.

3. Non-faculty priorities.

4. School-wide applications.

Examples of our consulting work in these four areas include:

Coaching for the Head of School (HOS) and the Administrative Team

• Advising HOS on complex employee challenges and implementing action plans to resolve them.

• Working directly with HOS on people-related issues and act weekly as an on-campus HR presence where none used to exist.

• Preparing a Board search committee for interviewing HOS candidates.

Faculty Initiatives

• Preparing and securing Trustee approval of a new compensation philosophy and structure for faculty.

• Leading a school’s project team to design and implement a new compensation structure based on competitive market data and contemporary design features.

• Redefining faculty responsibilities to match a school’s academic priorities.

Non-Faculty Priorities

• Designing and implementing a new compensation structure based on competitive data from peer schools.

• Recommending and implementing a new design for a Performance Management Program that included a training program for all department heads.

School-Wide Applications

• Delivering Board presentations on: 1) suspending retiree medical programs and the resulting financial implications; 2) results of employee surveys with recommendations for action; and 3) introducing new compensation programs for faculty and staff.

• Updating school handbooks with policy revisions for all employees.

• Conducting surveys among employees and parents.

• Leading in-service training programs for faculty and staff about interviewing and conducting performance reviews.

For Expert Consultation

David Lacey has extensive Human Resources consulting experience with a wide range of independent schools and companies in the for-profit and non-profit sectors. He has been an HR executive with AT&T, Celanese, CIGNA, Wyeth, First Fidelity Bancorporation and Technitrol. David has achieved

significant results with organizations in which he has worked and with consulting clients in all Human Resources areas: compensation and benefit design, staffing, retention solutions for organization effectiveness, employee and management assessment/development of key employees, and HR due diligence for acquisitions.

David has built strong, sustained working relationships with Heads of School and their administrative team members. He is an HR consultant who understands independent schools and thinks like a member of the team.

David earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from LeMoyne College and a Master’s Degree and a Doctoral Degree in Counseling/Organizational Psychology from Ohio State University. He was a Salzburg Fellow for international studies in talent development and received a German Marshall Fund grant. He has traveled extensively in China and Europe in his executive positions.
