January 2017 President’s Message by Chris Renne

HDS has hit the ground running this January and is looking forward to a year that is full of dressage events in addition to the show calendar. The new board members and I are settling in thanks in large part to the organization and transitional assistance of the past President and outgoing Board Members. The purpose of this newsletter is to make you aware of upcoming events so you can get them on your calendar. I especially would like to draw attention to the grants that are available to adult amateur and open riders and even a grant geared towards judging. The Dressage Foundation has let us know that they are seeking applicants for these grants. There are some great opportunities and I encourage anyone interested to apply – it is easier than you think and no special skill is required other than keen interest and a goal that meets the criteria of the grant.

Congratulations to all the HDS year end award recipients for both the Recognized Shows and the Schooling Shows. We know how much time, effort and plain hard work goes into earning eligibility for the awards and to be Champion and Reserve Champion at the levels is certainly an achievement. Congratulations also to all the eligible riders and good luck this year. My next message will focus on additional show events and outline some exciting news for this show season (teaser HDS awarded the Southern Breeders’ Championship to be held at the Laborious II show).

Conrad Schumacher has agreed to come back this year for another Three Part FEI Training Series. It seems that quite a few horse and riders are moving up the levels and we hope to see some new faces as well as past participants apply for the series. Part One of the 2017 FEI Training Series with Conrad Schumacher will be February 13-15, 2017 at The Woodlands Equestrian Club. Applications are simple and available online at the HDS Website. HDS members can audit for FREE. Conrad is from Germany and was German National Champion in his youth. He is known throughout the world for his exceptional dressage training skills. He has trained multiple riders from different countries to Olympic and World medals. This is a rare opportunity for HDS members to watch a dressage master at work.

March 1, 2017 is the deadline for The Dressage Foundation Evie Tumlin Fund. The goal of the fund is to provide financial assistance to Region 9 adult amateur riders to aid in their development in dressage. Grants range from $250 - 750 and are to be used for educational experiences to further the AA’s knowledge of dressage. To apply go to The Dressage Foundation website.

This is not the only grant that TDF offers and the deadlines vary. HDS has posted the deadlines, but they are subject to change so the best place to go is directly to The Dressage Foundation webpage.

The USDF Sport Horse Prospect Forum with Willy Arts and Michael Bragdell will, for the first time, be held in Houston May 13-14, 2017. The Forum will take place at Isabella Farms. There is more information on this event at USDF.org/education. The Forum is designed to bridge the gap between in-hand work and the Young Horse dressage tests. Demonstration riders are needed.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our outstanding volunteers at the shows and at the events - without our volunteers HDS could not function. We will have plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. As a reminder the four hour volunteer requirement will be in full force for those seeking end of the year award eligibility. If you have any questions about hours check out the HDS website or contact us. Our contact information is online. Again, we are really looking forward to an exciting year.

USDF Announces New Adult Education Initiative - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce the launch of the USDF National Education Initiative that will begin April 1, 2017. The purpose of this new program is to support GMOs in creating and maintaining affordable riding and educational opportunities for adults. The Initiative will offer four event formats that can be adapted to each GMOs needs: riding clinics/symposia, ride-a-tests, camps, and unmounted events. USDF will work with GMOs and their chapters to develop new events to enhance the education offerings in their local communities. GMOs will plan and facilitate approved events, with organizational and advertising support from USDF. In addition to this new program, approved events will also be eligible to apply for a USDF National Education Initiative Grant. These new grants will offer funding opportunities to help GMOs and their chapters get their education programs started. Grants will be split among three application deadlines with regional/geographical representation considered, with the first application deadline being May 1, 2017, for programs held after September 1, 2017. “The USDF National Education Initiative has been in development over the past two years, with the goal of making educational programs more accessible to our adult members, by allowing USDF Regions and GMOs more flexibility in how, and what types of, educational programs they offer for adults. I am excited about this program and believe it will provide more educational opportunities for our members,” stated USDF President George Williams. For more information on the USDF National Education Initiative and the USDF National Education Initiative Grant, please visit the USDF website at www.usdf.org or contact the program liaison at [email protected]. Arts and Bragdell to Present the 2017 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce Willy Arts and Michael Bragdell as the instructors for the 2017 USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum. This year's event will, again, feature a live forum approach and provide a correct, fundamental system for starting sport horse prospects. The program is for anyone with the goal of developing a consistent training foundation for sport horse prospects as they progress from in-hand to under-saddle, and eventual competition.

This year's forum will be held May 13-14 at Isabella Farms in Cypress, TX. Trainers and horses will be identified to participate through a selection process, and will work with the instructors throughout the forum. The forum environment will also engage auditors, consisting of breeders, trainers, and owners throughout the sessions, in an interactive setting Participants and auditors will also learn the necessary tools to be able to select and evaluate sport horse prospects before purchase, as well as the key elements needed in a trainer.

“We are so excited that this year's USDF Sport Horse Prospect Development Forum will be held at Isabella Farms. This will be the first year we have held the forum in this part of the country. We are also very excited that Michael Bragdell has joined our faculty and will be presenting with Willy Arts. These forums are a great educational opportunity, and are spreading correct training of the young dressage prospect to more and more people every year. We look forward to another great weekend, with wonderful horses, riders, location, and presenters,” stated Kristi Wysocki, USDF Sport Horse Committee Chair.

tear-resistant but also feel great in the riders’ hand.

USEF Unveils Complete Rebrand, Launches New Member Benefits - The United States Equestrian Federation is pleased to announce a rebranding, launch of a new fan membership, and additional membership benefits. Effective January 11, 2017, the Federation has become US Equestrian and has adopted a refreshed identity as part of a new overall strategic plan for the organization. This includes a refreshed logo that removes the shield element and better aligns the brand with other successful national governing bodies.

Introduced by incoming President, Murray Kessler, at the Annual Meeting in Lexington, KY. on Wednesday, the vision of the new US Equestrian is to bring the joy of horse sports to as many people as possible. This closely coincides with the organization’s mission to provide access to and increase participation in equestrian sports at all levels by ensuring fairness, safety, and enjoyment. US Equestrian will strive to engage horse sport enthusiasts at all levels through enhanced member offerings and consistent championing of horse welfare and fair play initiatives.

The website, USEF.org is now USequestrian.org and has been completely reengineered into a user-focused and mobile-friendly site that offers many useful tools and resources. Member-only benefits on the website include horse and rider searches, standings, and competition results. In concert with the rebrand, US Equestrian has launched the Joy of Horse Sports ad campaign. Imagery in print, digital, and video showcases the bond between horse and rider that is very much unique to equestrian sport. The essence of the ads captures the emotion that is felt and experienced by everyone who participates in horse sports and encourages people to discover and be a part of US Equestrian. Read more here

USEF Upholds Horse Welfare and Fair Play with Stiff Penalties for Doping – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Hearing Committee has issued its first decision imposing penalties pursuant to the Equine Drugs & Medications Penalty Guidelines that went into effect January 1, 2016. The Penalty Guidelines recommend ranges of penalties for violations of the Drugs & Medications rules with regard to particular categories of forbidden substances. Substances in Category IV, which include GABA, contain the most serious penalties. The Penalty Guidelines also take into account whether it is the respondent's first, second, or third offense. Larry Glefke received a 24-month suspension and a $24,000 fine after Kelley Farmer's horse, Unexpected, tested positive for GABA at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show in a Pre-Green Hunter 3'3" class on July 28, 2016. Glefke was identified on Unexpected's entry blank as the trainer. Farmer was identified as Unexpected's owner and rider.
