KIALLA CENTRAL PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Page 3

Last week we celebrated Book Week. Students in Foundation to Grade 3 used our Polycom device to talk to author Alison Lester. She has written

many children’s books including: Are we there yet? Magic Beach, Yikes and My Farm. Our students got an insight into what it is like to be an author. As a whole school, our students created their own “Where’s Wally?” type of books. Siblings worked together and our single students buddied up for this activity. Using their ICT skills and the Book Week theme of My Country, they created their own books using backgrounds from various landmarks and icons from around Australia. They were required to include a photo of each of the members of their group and 4 other items that were hidden in the picture. There are a few finishing touches that will be done in Design and Creativity Technology before these books will be printed and sent home. Well done to all of our students who have done a fantastic job on this project.

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair has finished for another year. It was great to see lots of our parents also visit the Fair this year. There were heaps of smiling faces as purchases were finalised. At this stage I am not sure how much we raised but I will certainly let you know when the total is confirmed. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Nathan Neff has completed his 4 week placement with me for his Principal Preparation Program.

Nathan helped me to complete our Agreed Teaching Practices document which was the major recommendation from our 2014 School Peer Review. Thanks Nathan for the contribution you made to K.C.P.S. during your visits. Our Agreed Teaching Practices document clearly articulates our teaching plan from Foundation to Grade 6. It is a summary that outlines the curriculum we teach and how we teach it. The curriculum is the

common set of knowledge and skills required by students for lifelong learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. This has been an 18 month project that has involved all staff, significant professional learning and evaluating our whole school practices. Thank you to all of the K.C.P.S. staff for their contribution and feedback. This is a major achievement and a document we are proud of.

This week we are analysing our 2016 NAPLAN results. Parents with a child in Grade 3 or 5 have been sent home their child’s individual results. I will share our school results once we have completed this process.

Before the end of term, I will be seeking Parents feedback on a variety of aspects of our school. This is less formal than the recent Department Parent Survey you were invited to complete. Some topics include: our uniform, facilities, opportunities for our students and our reporting package. I hope to send this home next week.

Wednesday 31st August ~ Parent / Teacher Interviews for students on Individual Learning Plans. If you have received a letter please make sure you have made a time with your child’s teacher.

There will be a special feature in next week’s newsletter about our “Time Out For The Girls” hosted by our Parents’ Club last night. Finally, I would like to wish the Long family all the best on their new adventures in Bright. Charlotte will finish at K.C.P.S. this Friday. Good luck! Debbie Humphries Proud Principal of K.C.P.S.

There are a few projects happening in Design & Creativity. We are finishing our

from Book Week. We are making cards for Father’s Day or Special Person Day.

Italian ~ Signora Pasqalia, Signorina H & Signora Opie

We have been learning about “cibo” (food) in Italian with Signora Pasqalia. She has been using the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to introduce foods to us and re-visit our numbers and colours.

The F/1s made their own La Macedonia (Fruit Salad) last week. After eating their creations, they had to survey each other to work out what fruit they liked and what they didn’t. (See the recipe & photos on the next pages.)

DID YOU KNOW … The first day of Spring is called the Vernal

Equinox. Vernal is Latin for Spring. Equinox is

Latin for Equal Days. On the first day of Spring

the sunrise and sunset are about 12 hours apart,

everywhere on the Earth and the hours of

daylight and night are almost equal. Daylight is a

little longer.

Round 23 Wrap

On Friday night the Eagles had a convincing win over the Crows by 29

points in an away game at the Adelaide oval.

On Saturday afternoon the Cats demolished the Demons by 111 points down

at Geelong. The Bombers had a good win over the Blues at the MCG by 24

points to end a difficult season and the Swans thrashed the Tigers in Sydney

by 113 points.

Saturday night the Power had a win over the Suns by 23 points up at the

Gold Coast and the Giants had a good win over the Kangaroos by 37 points

at Etihad Stadium.

On Sunday the Saints had a big win over the Lions by 58 points. The Hawks

had a win over the Magpies by the barest of margins of 1 point and to

complete round 23 the Dockers had an unexpected win over the Bulldogs by

20 points.

Sorry Magic Magpies you did not win the Jackpot, better luck next year.

In answer to your question X-Man the round 22 and 23 score are not shown

so that the winners will be a surprise when the winners are announced.

LDS the Bombers did end on a high for you and all Bomber Fans. The

Bombers had three more wins than they were predicted to have in 2016. The

last time the Bombers were on the bottom of the ladder was in 1933 (That

was even before Bomber 10 was born). Go Bombers and bring on 2017.

With it being the end of the home and away games of the 2016 footy season

it is now time for the finals. In a fortnight we will see:-

Thursday 8th September Eagles v Bulldogs

Friday 9th September Cats v Hawks

Saturday 10th September Swans v Giants / Crows v Kangaroos
