HAPPY NEW YEAR JOBURGERS!

I must say that the end of 2013 was a furious rush and I can’t believe that the Festive Season has come to an end and that we are now at the beginning of 2014!

If like me, you’re feeling a little apprehensive about the coming year and slightly nervous yet still ener-gized for what’s to come, then the January issue of Hello Joburg Magazine will help calm those nerves and offer you many wonderful things to do and look forward to this month.

One of the premier theatre shows in January is the amazing tribute show to the King of Rock ‘n Roll – Elvis Presley. The show is on at Joburg Theatre for a limited time only, from the 16th of January to 2nd February so get your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

I know that only starting 2014 now, you probably will not be think-ing about Valentines Day but for all you men out there who leave things to the last min-ute (I’m one of them) why not impress your ladies by finalizing your Valentines Day plans early. Maximillien Restaurant in Sandton is offering a romantic night for two including a four course candle lit dinner at R500 per person. Booking is essential.

For those of you who enjoy a little gardening and need some creative inspiration then I highly recommend you head on over to Lifestyle Home Garden in Honeydew from the 7th of February to see their annual Garden Design Show. Entrance is FREE!

If your still in the Festive mood and looking for a great night out then Riffs Bar & Grill at Garden Court Hotel Sandton City is the place to be. This vibey, relaxing new restaurant of-fers a chilled yet sophisticated atmosphere where diners can enjoy a variety of meals while listening to timeless favorites.

Finally, if you had to work through the Festive Season and are only able to take leave now then have a look at our Travel section where we have selected Durban as our recommend-ed travel destination for January. From the Three Cities Gateway Hotel to Ushaka Marine World, there are many desirable options to keep you entertained on your visit to South Africa’s leading ‘Holiday Destination’.

Compliments of the season to all our readers and whether you are Joburg residents or visitors to our great city, I hope that you find something in these pages to keep you enter-tained, satisfied and happy!

BLOOD BROTHERS

DAVID KRAMER ADAPTS WEST END HIT MUSICAL `BLOOD BROTHERS` FOR PIETER TOERIEN AND ERIC ABRAHAM. BLOOD BROTHERS is the story of two boys who are separated at birth when their financially desperate mother gives away one of her twins, but who are brought together again by friend-ship. Playwright Willy Russell gave his blessing to David Kramer`s adaptation, which locates the musical within the Cape Town community, giving it a distinctly local flavour.

RUBY WAX

Ruby Wax had it all – career, dream house, husband, kids, so when was the moment she realised she was the 1 in 4... Somewhere between painting her kitchen beige (again), realising she didn’t own a life manual or compre-hend the contents of a children’s party bag? In this hilarious and sometimes dark show, Ruby Wax discusses the tox-ins of our time - envy, fame, television,

the insatiable drive to win, getting rich, getting the perfect body, marriage, kids, career and, above all, staying busy while looking like you’re having a nice day. This is why we all, at one point in our lives, feel like we’re about to go under or, in Ruby’s case, fall off a cliff.

AGREED

“AGREED”, is a theatrical-fugue directed by Sylvaine Strike (Best Direc-tor Naledi Award for The Miser 2012) and performed by Lionel Newton. The production comprises of a trio of monologues, genially underscored by the emotive voice of the cello, played

on stage by the renowned Kutlwano Masote. The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning opens the show with a bold revisit to this well-loved work, soon focusing one`s attention on the majes-tic power of the English language. It introduces the biting theme of greed which runs through the entire produc-tion like an enticing golden thread, and is followed by a contemporary satirical monologue penned, “The Hand - over”, written by Nick Warren. In true Warren style, this is an incisive stab at the current captains of capitalism, the new elite and their monetary-mentors.

South African wines so often

tread the line between the old world

and the new and for Zonnebloem’s

range of award winning wines,

this balance between classic and

contemporary is ever present. Zon-

nebloem is a brand that stands for

craftsmanship in all its forms. After

all craft is at the heart of the wine-

making process, from the estates

that produce our grapes who use

the earth as their canvas to create

the fruit which lends our wines their

rich, distinctive character; to the

winemakers who use the skills they

have learned and developed over

decades to create the rich varietals

and blends that make up the Zon-

nebloem staple. Our commitment to

craft doesn’t end with the bottled

product, Zonnebloem invests in

craftsmen and artisans to ensure

that every bottle is presented, and

enjoyed, in a way that speaks to the

craft that went into its creation.

Zonnebloem has a storied history

going back to the establishment of

the original estate in 1692, but the

true story of Zonnebloem Wines

starts in 1856 when the original

estate was divided between the

sons of Petrus Malherbe. One

of his sons named his portion

Zonnebloem. The farm was later

purchased by the Furter family

and in 1940 Frederik Furter’s

granddaughter Marie took

over winemaking at the es-

tate and met with almost

instant success winning

three trophies at the pres-

tigious Cape Wine Show.

She went on to repeat this

feat a further three times.

It is stories like this that

inspire us, and it is why we

strive to seek out and rec-

ognise excellence in crafts-

manship wherever we may

find it, because what is

excellent today, would have been

excellent in the past and will still be

considered excellent tomorrow.

This wine is made entirely from

Sémillon grapes.

VINEYARDS

(viticulturist: Annelie Viljoen)

The grapes were sourced from bush

vines in the Perdeberg area. A low

yield ensured very concentrated

flavours in the berries. The vines are

grown on slopes facing in a westerly

direction, in medium deep shale,

granite and sandstone soils. Vines

were irrigated only when necessary.

WINEMAKING (cellarmaster: Deon

Boshoff, winemaker: Elize Coetzee)

The grapes were harvested by hand

at 23° Balling in mid-February. In the

cellar, the grapes were fermented

in a single stainless steel tank at

13.5°C. After fermentation the wine

was left on the primary lees and

stirred occasionally to enhance the

complexity on the palate.

WINEMAKER ‘S COMMENTS

Colour: Clear and bright with a

greenish, golden tint.

Bouquet: A profusion of tropical

fruit and asparagus aromas with

a touch of grassiness.

Palate: Complex and full-bodied

with a creamy texture. The fla-

vours picked up in the bouquet

follows through onto the palate

and linger long on aftertaste.

FOOD PAIRING

Enjoy this wine slightly

chilled on its own, or

with shellfish, chicken

or vegetable pâté.

The advantages of these wood burning outdoor ovens stretches as far as ones creative mind can delve into gastronomy. Perfect for pizzas, multiple roasts, baking as well as slow cooking a stylish potjie or delicate tagine with genuine wood burning tastes. The ovens allow for a more sociable cooking experience without compromising the variety and quality of the dishes they are able to produce.

It evokes a time when life was a little slower and cooking was given the care and attention it deserves. It allows the chef to interact with the entire process and at the same time pro-duce authentic cuisine with passion. Fontana’s customer commitment is to make each of their products with the aim of providing a tool to achieve the highest performance in terms of cooking and gastronomy”, com-ments Barbara Silvi, Creative Director, Fontana Forni.

October saw the exciting launch of the TrashCanKidz brand, held at the iconic restaurant Walnut Grove. Media and TV personalities; Sam Cowen, Rosie McKenzie, and Emmanuel Castis were amongst those to toast to the brands ribbon cutting.

As part of Sandton City CSI initia-tive they have collaborated with TrashCanKidz, making them the official brand ambassadors for one of Africa’s premier shopping’s centers. Customers are now invited to visit the adoption center in Sandton City (between Earthchild U86 A and Naartjie U301) to adopt one of the five adorable kidz.

About TrashCanKidzOur motto is ‘Every Child Counts’ and it’s really very simple. TrashCan-Kidz is a commercial enterprise with a social conscience and purpose. We are here to give a voice to the voice-less – to the thousands and millions of orphaned, vulnerable and street children of the world. Homeless boys and girls who, for one reason or another, the world has ‘forgotten.’ TrashCanKidz is here to start a conver-sation about the plight of these children and to take positive steps so that ours can be the generation that starts making a difference. And we’re doing it in a really unique, powerful and meaning-ful way – through the power of play!

TrashCanKidz invites kids to adopt an adorable TrashCanKidz doll of their own. These dolls represent the homeless children of our world. There are five TrashCanKidz dolls namely; Calypso, Slam, Solo, Rose, and Samson.

Calypso is the surfer and Slam is the cool kid, both of The Forgotten

World. Slam loves to grind the rails of his skateboard. Solo is the shyest of the TrashCanKidz and Rose is the youngest of the TrashCanKidz and she loves flowers and fluffy animals. Then there is Samson who likes to keep strong and fit. He does not take kindly to bullies and is always ready to help if any of the TrashCan-Kidz needs his help.

For every one of the dolls adopted, we donate 20% to an organisation or initiative supporting children in need. There is also an iPad game, with plans for card games and inter-active books available – so that kids can get involved in the adventures of their TrashCanKidz. And for every-thing that we do, everything that we sell – we make a contribution to the charities and organisations we are working with Trashcankidz

OUR TRUSTED SKIN CARE TECHNOLOGY USED IN TREATMENTS:• Soft Laser®• Microdermalaser®• CEYA® (non-surgical face lift)• Advanced Fluorescent Technology (AFT)• Pain-Free, Hair-Free™

WHAT IS SOFT LASER?The Placecol Soft Laser® Cosmetic Therapy is a form of light therapy that is scientifically proven to ensure that you enjoy maximum benefit from your skin care treatments. By gently activating blood flow towards tissue, Soft Laser® improves circula-tion - reducing inflammation and assisting in deeper product penetra-tion, improving the effectiveness of each treatment.

WHAT IS MICRODERMALASER?This advanced treatment, which is a combination of Soft Laser® and Microdermabrasion, assists in age- prevention and gives skin a healthy, youthful glow. The process employs fine crystals to gently buff and resurface the skin, removing tired surface cells and stimulating new cell production. Promoting a healthy, youthful skin tone.*This treatment is not recommended for hyper-sensitive skin.

WHAT IS CEYA® (NON-SURGICAL FACE LIFT)?CEYA® is a remarkable toning and firming therapy that is scientifically proven to achieve immediate and lasting results.

The process uses radio waves to pen-etrate the body with ‘colda energy’. To balance itself, your body naturally heats the area by increasing blood flow to the region. Simultaneously supplying nutrients and oxygen while carrying away toxins and waste. This has the effect of sculpting and ton-ing beautiful muscle while assisting with fine lines and wrinkles.

WHAT IS ADVANCED FLUORESCENTTECHNOLOGY (AFT)?AFT Rejuvenation improves dull com-plexions, uneven pigmentation and large pores, as well as red flushing skin and rosacea. AFT pulsed light gives your skin a younger appear-ance. Your skin will appear naturally even-toned and healthy.

STER-KINEKOR, South Africa’s leading cinema chain, is excited to announce the opening of one of the most sophisticated and digitally enhanced cinema experiences at the new Cradlestone Mall development in Krugersdorp. The centre opened its doors on 20 November 2013.The state-of-the-art, eight-theatre Ster-Kinekor complex at Cradlestone Mall boasts the latest in digital pro-jector technology, quality surround sound speaker systems and three 3D screens. The most exciting news is that, due to popular demand, the complex will also include two exclu-sive Cine Prestige cinemas.

This will be the company’s second investment in the luxurious Cine Prestige format, following the suc-cess of the first installation at The Zone in Rosebank complex last year. These specialist cinemas epitomise film-viewing heaven and pure luxury rolled into one, as audiences relax in large, comfortable chairs in an exclusive cinema environment, while watching the latest blockbusters on the big screen.

These cinemas boast a mix of single and double pure leather recliner seats that ooze lavish comfort with snack trays neatly fitted into them, for that perfect date-night out. A total of 65 movie-goers can be accommodated in these two specialist cinemas at any one screening. Added to the experience is an exclusive VIP lounge area where delicious platters of food can be ordered and enjoyed inside the Cine Prestige cinema, and where queuing is a thing of the past with a dedicated catering counter.

“We are very proud of our new Cradlestone development as we con-tinue to bring the very best in cinema entertainment to South Africans. We are confident that when people experience our new cinemas at Cra-dlestone Mall, they will be impressed with the scale and sophistication of the new complex.

“With the ability to accommodate up to 5 000 patrons per day, we will adequately cater for the demand we expect at this new venue. It’s very exciting. It’s big news. It’s the start of a new era in entertainment on the West Rand,” says Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

If you are human, you can braai. Cooking meat over a fire is some-thing that defines our evolution as a species.

The act of using fire to cook food even defines our social structure as mammals – thanks to the lucky light-ning strike eons ago, and the fact that there were some steaks handy.

Anything tastes better if you hold it over a fire for a while. Sure, it may not improve the flavour of Brusselssprouts, but if you leave them on for long enough, it’s a good way to get rid of them.

Take everything you think you know about cooking and forget it. Jean Nel is re-inventing the braai. It is about so much more than just steaks and boerewors; anything that can be eaten can be braaied. From salads to sides, meats to veg... you could even invite a vegetarian to a braai!

In Braai the Beloved Country, Jean Nel shares his favourite braai recipes from

15 years of cooking, training and ca-tering.

The book contains the secrets of cooking everything from a perfect ‘tjoppie’ to breads and salads on that favourite South African cultural icon– the braai. Not only does he present a host of delicious and unexpected recipes; he goes beyond just cooking, covering everything you need to know about the braai including the tools you’ll need and their mainte-nance.

ABOUT THE AUTHORJean Nel is a trusted instructor at the Pick n Pay Good FoodStudio and an official Weber coach for the Western Cape. Hisrecipes are staples in households across the country. Now hehas finally written down all the reci-pes that make him such asought-after teacher and corporate event caterer.

• Subaru BRZ named a 2014 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year semi-finalist• Standard performance exhaust proven to add 7 kW extra power• New BRZ Sportshift automatic model joins local line-up

The Subaru BRZ – the brand’s newest model and also the only one available with rear-wheel drive – is making in-creasingly important waves in South Africa where its more dedicated fol-lowing has taken a liking to the pure sports car connotations afforded by the Subaru badge.

Says Ashley Lazarus, Subaru Southern Africa Marketing Manager: “The BRZ is appealing – as it should – to true sports car enthusiasts and not least to those who know what the Subaru badge stands for in South Africa. The local motoring media seem to realise this as well, as they named the Subaru BRZ 2.0 manual a semi-finalist in the running to next year’s prestigious WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year competition. It is a true delight that our BRZ is part of this group of vehicles, and proof of its worthiness as one of the best vehicles in its class.

“What we are also very proud of is the fact that we are now able to

confirm that the standard perfor-mance exhaust fitted to the BRZ has been proven to deliver an increase in engine output by 7 kW – a meaning-ful gain which further sets the BRZ apart, not only on the aural front whereby the normally-aspirated Boxer® engine can be heard in all its glory, but also in the performance stakes where seconds count.”

Further to the extra power, the local BRZ range is now expanding with the addition of the BRZ 2.0 Sport-shift 6-speed automatic derivative. Following the already high specifica-tion level of the six-speed manual derivative, the BRZ automatic gains paddle shifters as an added bonus, with an overall price premium of just R10 000.

“The new BRZ automatic allows anyone who has a yearning to own this iconic sports car the opportunity to do so, whether they prefer manual or automatic gearboxes. Its exclusiv-ity in the South African market adds further appeal as a very attractive op-tion in the compact sports car stakes, and the addition of the automatic ‘box has not removed any of the BRZ’s unique character or driving fun, making it a viable alternative to the manual.”

Both Subaru BRZ models continue to feature a 2.0-litre normally-aspirated four-cylinder Boxer® petrol engine which produces 154 kW and 205 Nm, the six gears of either model de-livering the force to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential. Standard equipment includes the performance exhaust, a rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, key-less access and starting, dual-zone climate control, seven airbags and

five-mode VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control).

Retail pricing is as follows, includ-ing a 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty and a generous 5-year/ 105 000 km maintenance plan:
