General Tips for FacebookUse Facebook Naturally:

According to Clarke Cole, all social media platforms have their own strengths andshould be used in a way that draws on these strengths. As sites like Twitter have becomemore popular, Facebook users sometimes feel the need to post briey, efciently, andfrequently. It is recommended that you post no more than one or two status updates eachday. Make sure to make your voice personal and do not directly copy and paste contentfrom other social media platforms. If you aren’t able to update at certain periods of time,

you can use the scheduling module in Publishing Tools at the top of your Facebook Page(directions on pages 9-11).

Target Your Posts:Consider targeting your post to particular groups. Based on your analytics, you

know that students ages 18-25 are looking at your page at around 10am, post a messagein the morning about volunteering or upcoming events that students can engage in. Forolder people looking at your page at around 10pm, post a message at night aboutdonating and the work going on in the centers. Additionally, you can use Facebookanalytics in the Insights section at the top of your Facebook Page.

Use Visuals:According to Clarke Cole, photo posts see twenty times more engagement that

video posts, status updates, and links through likes, clicks, comments, and shares, etc. This

creates a network in which your posts are posted on other users’ News Feeds morefrequently. This increases the amount of people viewing your posts and your presence onFacebook. Note that you can use visuals when making text posts. Additionally, creating aphoto gallery on your Facebook allows users to see who you are as an organization, what

you do, and adds personality to your page.

Engage in Conversation with Your Followers:The 2016 Facebook Calendar outlines major holidays of JCW that could be used

to increase donations, adoptions, and volunteers. However, don’t be afraid to engage in

conversation with your followers. For example, with the 702 Walk the Talk coming up, you could post, “Don’t forget to sign up for our team for the 702 Walk the Talk.facebook.com/events/220913634942182/“. You can also share news from other sources.Try to focus it on news related to your organization, but don’t be afraid to post onpopular issues and news. Keep a 3:1 ratio of posts related to your organization andpopular news posts.

    TwitterDos and Don’ts of Twitter

Dos Don’tsTweet using clear and conciselanguage: Based on research done onthe twitter of @NonProtOrgs, it isfound that tweets written in completesentences without abbreviations areretweeted more as are tweets that end

with a period or colon before the link.

Use more than two hashtags:According to Nonprot Tech for Good, tweets with more than two hashtagshave a lower retweet rate. It isrecommended that you use hashtagsstrategically to mention important

causes, events, and campaigns, but it isnot necessary to use hashtags in everytweet.

Include a link with your tweetwhen possible: According toNonprot Tech for Good, tweets withlinks have a 86% higher retweet rate.

Be robotic: Don’t be afraid to bepersonal and genuine in your posts.Twitter Counter notes, Twitter gives

you a chance to set the tone for yourorganization, so don’t be afraid to showsome personality.

Use your twitter analyticsdashboard: According to NonprotTech for Good, in order to know whattypes of tweets are getting the mostrecognition, check your twitter analyticsdashboard at https://analytics.twitter.com/ . If you noticea pattern in which tweets get the mostlikes and retweets, you can post more of

    them.

Engage with just your followers:While engaging with your followers isimportant and should be a priority, don't be afraid to engage inconversations and trending topics onTwitter. According to Twitter Counter, allows you to network with other peopleand organizations and create somepublicity for your organization.

However, make sure to bring theseconversation back to the mission of your organization.

    17/28

General Tips for TwitterUse Trending Topics To Boost Your Message

According to Quicksprout, tweets with hashtags double the engagement rate. If you see a trending topic on Twitter that you feel you can turn around and use to talkabout your organization, use it. For example, if #charitytuesday is trending, considertweeting, “Check out the great work we’re doing at Jo’burg Child Welfare and donate tohelp us support the children of JCW. #charitytuesday” or “Donate today to Jo’burg ChildWelfare! #charitytuesday http://jhbchildwelfare.co.za/want-to-help/“. However, don’toverdo the amount of hashtags that you use.

Follow Other Organizations with Similar InterestBe sure to follow major donors and corporations on Twitter as well as other

organizations that have similar interest. For instance, following Princess Alice Home and Jozi Kids will help create a network within your feed and will allow you to stay updateabout the issues going on at these organizations. According to Clark Cole, retweetingcontent from other organizations, pertaining to your mission, allows your to forgeconnections and show your respect for their voices.

Be ActiveYour followers will make their own decision on whether you post to much or not

enough. Some sources suggest that ve or four tweets are the optimal number per day, buthaving at least one tweet a day creates a visible presence while not crowding your

follower’s feeds. You should make sure that you are at least tweeting once a week to make your presence know. Also, activity depends on the content you are posting. According toCole, if you are posting about recent news in your organization’s eld like new legislatureon child protection in South Africa, you can post many times a day to keep your followersupdated. However, if you are posting content about your events and project, less posts arebetter. Additionally, if you aren’t able to tweet at certain periods of time, you can use toolssuch as HootSuite, Twuffer, and TwittTimer to draft future post and schedule it for a latertime.
