Today, many kids see school and learning as a burden – a chore that they have to do before being allowed to play with their tablets. While education is essential, I believe that, by sparking a child’s innate curiosity and channelling their imaginations toward the infinite horizon of possibility, learning can be regarded, not only as fundamental, but fun as well.

This passion for fostering lifelong learners was the reason I founded Focus Learning.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of teaming up with passionate and professional educators. We have developed and instituted programs that focus on “edu-tainment”. These programs facilitate substantive learning in a fun and engaging atmosphere, allowing for our teachers to give attention to each student. We believe that what we have created will not only foster a love for learning, but progress and success in their chosen subjects as well.

In all candidness, sometimes I feel as though I have one of the best jobs in the world. Seeing a child’s face light up – full of brightness, life, wonder and curiosity – is not just a reward to educators, but to our global community. I hope that, through our program, we will do the same for your child and light their way toward all the possibilities learning can provide.

Rose Reisman has been called the ”Nutritional Guru of Canada” by the media. As a Registered Nutritional Consultant, TV personality, Adjunct Professor of Health at York University and author of 19 cookbooks, with several featuring Children’s sections. Rose is literally changing the way Canadians eat and live. Now Rose has been able to focus her expertise on properly feeding children through the elementary school system and camps.

Lunch programs are customized to meet the requirements of Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.

Mathematics nurtures the power of reasoning, abstract spatial thinking, creativity, and critical analysis for real-life problem-solving skills. FocusMath is a unique program that brokers the power of computer-assisted learning with hands-on activities and challenging problem sets. Foundational concepts are taught so that each student has the opportunity to discover (low-floor) while providing an environment to develop a deep understanding (high-ceiling).

Making sure your voice is heard!

Focus Learning’s Public Speaking and Presentation program is designed with

both Language and Dramatic Arts curriculums combined. The students will engage in a variety of performance-based activities, while also learning the important linguistic and presentational skills needed to give an effective speech. By the end of the summer, be prepared to be captivated by their compelling public speaking capabilities!

Focus Learning’s ESL Summer Camp gives kids the confidence and skills they

need to learn and practice English all summer! Campers from different countries

and cultures work on weekly, summer-themed projects in small group classes, and

interact in immersion activities with native speakers, to improve English listening,

reading, writing and presentation skills.

This year, we are combining our hugely successful WeDo Robotics camp with

Computer Science discoveries in our Kids Coding & Robotics camp. Each day

programming. Students discover and solve real-world problems with their

robots and other cutting-edge technologies throughout the week. Our computer

science teachers ensure adequate challenges for each camper and prepare them

for future FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competitions.

Each day, campers will discover new programming skills and techniques as

they create their own computer games. Campers use MIT Media Lab’s Scratch

environment to create a variety of games involving multiple characters and

screens, record their own sounds, and make animations.

Led by Mr. Charles Rotenberg, one of the Minecraft Global Mentors, our unique

collaborative and versatile program encourages 21st-century skills used across all

subjects. Through collaboration and teamwork, all within the world of the game,

students will learn skills relating to problem-solving and design, in addition to coding

in languages using Javascript and Lua.

Get Started on the Path to Creating Your Own Business. A fun and engaging program

for young entrepreneurs to begin an adventure in an enterprise. Students will team to

brainstorm start-up companies where they will prototype a product or service using 3D

printers with traditional handmade crafting tools. In addition to learning freely available

programs to create logos, business cards and websites, elementary financial principles

including unit cost, pricing, marketing and profit margins are all covered throughout.

Ages 8-12


• 3D Design & Modelling: Business concepts are rendered by a self-designed 3D print or traditional crafting tools.

• Financial Literacy: Learn the history and role of money and the changing landscape to cryptocurrencies and blockchains.

• Presentation & Marketing Skills: Students in small groups presents their business plan in front of panellist.

The Creative Writing program is designed for young writers who are interested in developing their writing skills in fiction and poetry. Model United Nations is the most popular competitive non-sport extracurricular program in North America. It is a form of competitive public speaking and negotiation where the competitors, known as “delegates”, simulate nations advancing policy at the United Nations. Delegates can compete at conferences across the world, where they represent the interests of their assigned nation in a committee focussing on a particular set of world issues.

The YoungTrepeneurs program is an all-encompassing business and entrepreneurship camp program. We have created a unique approach that opens up students’ minds and inspire them to create businesses from ideas generated directly in our classroom work. This Summer, we will be covering all of the basics of programming using the Python language. Python is used by various technology companies including Google, Facebook and Netflix. On many recent polls, it is one of the most popular programming languages used in industry. In our camp, we will learn how to print out various messages, make simple decisions with if-statements, repeat computations with loops and learn about arithmetic on computers. In addition, we will explore some basic game design concepts using Python in Processing.

In this competition prep program, we build on the basics of programming using the Python language to prepare for coding competitions. Whether you have used Python or another language previously, you can develop your coding and logical thinking skills in this intensive program. We will practice solving a variety of contest-style problems using the Canadian Computing Competition grader (cccgrader.com) and Codewars. Game design concepts will be used to encourage further application of the topics covered in class.

Q: How can I choose from your two locations?A: • Campers 6 - 12 years old should come to our North York Site at Leslie and York Mills, inside

TopKids School, where FocusKids programs are provided.

• Campers 12 - 15 years old should come to our Markham Site at Steeles and Don Mills, on the upper level of the Shops on Steeles and 404.

• Both camp locations are less than a five-minute walk away from public parks.

• Both camp locations are easily accessible by TTC or YRT bus routes.

Q: What makes Focus Learning different from other camps?A: • Focus Learning camp programs are designed and delivered by a team of certified educators

and industry experts.

• We keep the teacher-student ratio at 1:8 or lower to ensure quality and safety.

Q: What are the qualifications of your camp instructors and counsellors?A: • All of our program teachers are either OCT or TESL certified or experts in their field with

relevant certification.

• All of our counsellors are university students or graduates who have had previous summer camp experience.

• All of our instructors and counsellors are CPR and First-Aid certified and have gone through Vulnerable Sector screening.

Q: How do you guarantee the safety of the campers?A: • There is a live security camera in each classroom to help us monitor and track the classes

and activities.

• CPR, First-Aid, and Vulnerable police background checks are required of everyone working at Focus Learning.

Q: Should my child bring lunches and snacks to camp?A: • Campers attending the North York Focus Learning Kids camp will have the option to order their lunch

as part of their package. Otherwise, campers will be expected to bring their own nut-free lunches with two snacks.

• Campers attending the Markham Focus Learning Leadership camp can bring their own nut-free lunch or can use their lunch break to get food from the surrounding restaurants.
