It is one of the really special times of the year in primary schools as the children learn carols and Christmas plays, make decorations and prepare excitedly for their end of year activities. ‘Tis also the season to be busy as the end of the school year approaches. Despite the imminence of Christmas and the holidays, all grades are still busy working and it is a delight to visit the learning communities to see the various inquiry units being studied. A tremendous amount of quality activity based learning occurs in each of these topics, and this is a feature of the curriculum of which the school can be justifiably proud. OXFAM Concert Congratulations to the students and teachers who were involved in the various groups who performed so creditably last Thursday evening at the OXFAM concert. As is usually the case with Hartwell students, they represented our school with pride and their poise and confidence on stage was amazing. Some of the students who were involved have only been learning their musical instruments for a short time. The groups involved included the senior and middle choir; the drum band, jazz band and the Hartwell Strings. Well done to every students who performed and especially to Clare Hyland, Michael Lee, Hannah and Phoebe who train and practise with these groups each week. Dear Parents, The Christmas spirit has really started to become evident this week- with only three weeks of the school year left. It is one of the really special times of the year in primary schools as the children learn carols and Christmas plays, make decorations and prepare excitedly for their end of year activities. ‘Tis also the season to be busy as the end of the school year approaches. help please complete the slip contained in this newsletter and return it to the school asap. Ideally we would like eight helpers. School Contributions 2017 School Council met last night and has determined that the school contributions for 2017 will remain at the same level as for this year. With that in mind a letter detailing these costs was sent home to all families today to enable those who like to settle them before Christmas to do so. As is always the case, parents who want to make individual arrangements for payment are encouraged to contact me at school. Watering Roster We plan to set up a watering roster again this year for the Summer vacation with two to three families rostered each week to water the plants. In particular we want to target the new plants; the plants along the Milverton Street side of the school, including the front garden; the garden outside the art room and the plants along Oberwyl Street including the small garden on the corner of Oberwyl and Merton Streets. We have had extra taps put in the garden so that the task is manageable and will have several hoses on reels for the volunteers to use. If you are not going away for the entire holiday period and would be willing to be on a watering roster for one week, please complete the attached form and send it to the office. This is a very practical way to ensure that our students return from the Summer holidays to an attractive school environment. Details of the roster and how to access hoses will be forwarded to volunteers in the last week of the school year. We are also interested in hearing from any parents who would be happy to arrive at school a little early- approximately 2.45pm on hot days and spend 30-45 minutes watering the gardens. If you can assist please come and talk to Garry Collins or me or see the ladies in the office. 2017 Curriculum Days At School Council last night the dates were approved for curriculum days in 2017. I am providing them now for your interest and also to give you the maximum possible notice to facilitate your work arrangements. There will be four curriculum days as follows: -

Monday 30 January- the focus will be on setting

up the learning communities for the start of next

year and in readiness for the students who start

school the next day if they are in Years 1-6.

Friday 24 March. This day will be led by Lyn

Watts- a Literacy coach. We will be working on our

Writing program as well as dialogic teaching and

questioning

Monday 17 July- the first day of term 3

Monday October 9- the first day of term 4

PE UPDATE HOOP TIME – STATE GRAND FINAL DAY Congratulations to our Junior Future Stars Hoop Time Team on their terrific result at the Basketball Victoria Hoop Time State Grand Final last Thursday. Winning all of their pool games, the Hartwell Heat finished on top of the ladder. The mixed team headed into the quarter finals where the competition really stepped up. In a wonderfully gallant effort, the team did their best however lost their quarter final by five points. Resilience was the lesson of the day. Learning how to bounce back from a loss when you want success so much, is never easy. The team finished in the top 8 from over 740 schools in Victoria which is pretty special. Thank you to Nick Holdsworth for coaching the team once again. Thank you to Riku Nevasalo for scoring and to all of the parents for getting their children to the tournament. We have had 173 students play in 19 different hoop time teams this year, all of whom I am sure have had a valuable experience. Well done to all players and thank you to all coaches and parents. CRICKET VICTORIA – T20 BLAST Well done to our Year 6 Boys’ Kanga 8s team who played in the Regional Finals of the Cricket Victoria T20 Blast competition. The boys had a fantastic day of cricket with one win and two losses. Another valuable learning experience and another opportunity to demonstrate leadership and co-operative skills, for all of the boys. Thank you to Karl Burton (Camp Australia) for coaching the team and to all of the parents who transported players to and from Wantirna. JUNIOR LACROSSE MINI TOURNAMENT – 6-8PM ON THURSDAY 8TH DECEMBER Year 4,5 and 6 students have enjoyed exciting lacrosse sessions during PE this year including a recent “game” experience. We have been fortunate to have the help of expert coaches from the Camberwell Lacrosse Club with this program. Interested students now have an exciting opportunity to play with friends in teams at a special ‘daylight savings mini tournament’, conducted for students from Hartwell and other local schools on THURSDAY 8th DECEMBER between 6-8 pm at Dorothy Laver Reserve, off Dunlop Street, Ashburton. Students have been given an information flyer in PE. Please return the reply slip if you intend to play, to me asap. There is no cost to participate but it may be necessary to limit numbers so please get in early. WEETBIX TRYATHLON Can you believe the Weetbix Tryathalon is on again! Online registration is now open for the 2017 event and I cannot wait to do it all over again next year. For those who are not familiar with the event, it is held on Sunday 12th March next year at the Catani Gardens in St. Kilda. It would appear there is no Geelong event in 2017, however Bendigo is

on Sunday 26th February. The event is made up of a swim in the bay, a ride on your bike around the path in the gardens and then a run. You can do it at your own pace, it is not really a race, it is all about just having a go and doing your best. The event is very safe with lifeguards in the water, volunteers around the track and lots of parents and families cheering competitors on. Hartwell families make it a very special day. Early in the new school year, leading up to the event, we will run some training sessions at Ashburton and at St. Kilda so entrants can practise before the day. Any newcomers to the event are given the chance to do some training before event, along with all of the experienced campaigners! Entrants do have to be 7 years old or over on the day of the event. Keep in mind students can also enter as a team if they are not quite ready to do the whole event on their own. Last year we set a goal of getting 100 students to enter the Tryathlon. We beat that goal and got 120 students to do it. It was amazing. This year we will set the same goal and try to get 100 students to enter. Once students have entered they should come to the gym and put their name on the TRYathlon wall of fame! All details can be found on the website: www.tryathlon.com.au/ Go Hartwell! SWIMMING TRIALS Our swimming trials are on this Friday 2nd December from 4pm - 5.00pm at Harold Hold Aquatic Centre. Students do need to register with me by Thursday if they have not done so already. See you at the pool GIDSSA TENNIS TOURNAMENT Good luck to Year 5 students, Lauren P, Sophie K, Josh M and Ed H who will represent Hartwell at the Glen Iris District Tennis Tournament this Thursday at Burwood. Well done to all other students who trialed for this team. The standard of tennis was extremely high and very impressive. Have a great week. Jo Bayes PE & Sport Co-ordinator Year 6 Graduation Fundraiser Icy Poles will be on sale during lunchtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays and after school on Fridays.

There are also several FAQs as well as how to download the app to your mobile phone. If you have any further queries please contact the school office. Please ensure that you choose the right dates and also click on the ‘Confirm’ button as your child’s order will not come through to us if the order has not been confirmed.
