In This Issue: Thank You Education Week Traffic Around School
The Lion King Reminders Notices Recently Sent Home
Dear Parents, The start of this term has certainly been very busy and productive. I am continually impressed with our children and their willingness to participate so enthusiastically in every school activity. On Friday, in beautiful sunshine, I watched the Prep to Year 6 students run, jog, walk and really enjoy their circuit around the school as they completed the Lap a Thon. It was wonderful to listen to the encouragement and support they gave to each other. We were treated to another beautiful day of weather on Saturday, which led to our Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall being an overwhelming success. Many thanks to Chris Howell and Lauren Reitz who coordinated these events. We have raised approximately $2,450 in fundraising, which is an excellent achievement. Thank you to everyone who supported us with cooking, baking, selling and helping out on the day. It was fabulous. Yesterday morning during assembly, we were able to use the new Audio Visual System in the gym. We have installed a ‘stadium grade’ projector, screen and sound system in protective casing – costing approximately $34,000. Being able to install such a worthwhile sound system is a direct reflection of fundraising at Hartwell. It will be invaluable for parent and student presentations, information sessions, productions and performances. As you can see, a system such as this is costly and we really appreciate all our fundraising support, as without this we would not be able to provide such excellent resources for the teaching and learning programs at school. Thank you to Adrian O’Connor for his organization of our new A.V. system. EDUCATION WEEK
This week across Victoria we celebrate ‘education’. The focus for this year is ‘CAREERS’. This focus acknowledges people’s
careers, pathways, and finding that dream job!

HARTWELL PRIMARY SCHOOL 4055
During the week, the students’ will talk about a variety of careers and their own aspirations for the future. This would be a very interesting ‘dinner table’ discussion. As mentioned last week, we have several activities scheduled to showcase our school in the community. They include: School Tours – On Saturday morning, Pip, Adrian and I will conduct a tour of the school for prospective parents. We have held one this morning as we usually do on Tuesdays. All parents with Preps for next year are invited to a school information session tonight (Tuesday 21 May) at 7.30pm in the Prep Learning Community. We look forward to sharing the wonderful
teaching and learning program at Hartwell. TRAFFIC AROUND THE SCHOOL Please can I ask again for families to become familiar with the traffic system that is in place before school and after school and the 40km rule during school times. Milverton Street and Merton Street at this point are not ‘one way streets’, the ‘no entry’ signs are in place to assist with the flow of traffic. We are a large school and when driving to pick up your children I would ask you to be patient with other drivers and pedestrians. Particularly with winter approaching and wetter weather the traffic tends to increase. Boroondara Council have put in place some road rules, which they believe to support the flow of traffic. Please remember not to park over our neighbour’s driveways. We do have a group on School Council who regularly look at traffic issues and work together to try and maintain safety for our community. If you have any feedback or ideas for this committee please contact me. The traffic map is attached to this newsletter. Thank you for your assistance with this matter. THE LION KING With only four weeks to go we are getting excited! The students and teachers continue to rehearse their lines, songs and dances. It is a wonderful event and we can’t wait to share the children’s performances with our families. This week two notices will come home; one for bus permission and one for ticket ordering. This year we will be using ‘TryBooking’ for ticket ordering. There is a limit of four tickets per family and we will create a waiting list at the school office if more tickets become available. Please read the notice carefully as we will be asking you to use ‘TryBooking’ to purchase your tickets. The booking system will be activated midday this Sunday 26th May. Please note that there will be NO ASSEMBLY next Monday 27 May as we will have a day of full rehearsals (no costumes are required on this day).

Lisa Banks Principal PE UPDATE JUNIOR CROSS COUNTRY It was certainly worth the wait! Our Prep, Yr. 1 and Yr. 2 students provided us with a fantastic display of running last Wednesday at Lynden Park, in glorious weather. Congratulations to everyone who participated with great determination and infectious enthusiasm, showing their Hartwell ‘have a go’ attitude. It was wonderful to see so many parents, siblings and grandparents cheering on the runners. Thanks to our wonderfully supportive teachers for their flexibility and support of the event – some impressive running performances amongst the P-2 teaching staff! Thank you also to all of the parents who assisted with walking the students to and from the park safely. Our House Captains played an important role in supporting the junior runners and ensuring the atmosphere was buzzing, with the best house chants we have had in a long time. With the Junior event now completed, I was able to announce the results at Monday’s assembly
and present a slide show of both the junior and senior event. A special thank you to Nancy Seibel (Owen and Claire’s mother), Kirsten Myers (Toby and Tessa’s mother) and to Ray Wong (Chandler and Morris’ grandfather) for taking such beautiful photos of the events. The final results were:
1st Place: HIGHFIELD HOUSE 6950 pts
2nd Place: OBERWYL HOUSE 6770 pts
3RD Place: MILVERTON HOUSE 6670 pts
4th Place: MERTON HOUSE 5950 pts
Congratulations to Highfield Captains Ed, Neva, Oscar and Chloe on leading their house to victory! Congratulations to Year 6 students Oscar S. and Emma W. who are our 2019 Cross Country Captains. Oscar and Emma will lead our team at the District event. LAP-A-THON The entire school was back in action on Friday for our bi-annual Lap-a-thon. Again, the level of commitment, determination and enthusiasm by every year level was outstanding. We had so much assistance from our wonderful parents, too many to name, but a sincere thank you to all. There was an atmosphere filled with excitement, fun, laughter, colour and much pride swirling around our school. Many parents re-lived memories of yester-year as we boogied to some 80s and 90s tunes late in the afternoon! A great day that highlighted what a wonderful school community we are. VICTORIAN INTERSCHOOL SNOWSPORTS Each year HPS sends a contingent of snow skiers to Mt. Buller to compete in the Victorian Interschools Snowsports. Although I do not attend the event, I do all of the online entries and ticketing for this event. Therefore, parent supervision throughout the entire event is required. We also need to supply parent volunteers. Entries do not close until August, however I have been fielding some questions from interested parents. Parents do need to book all accommodation, so I appreciate details are required sooner rather than later. If you are interested in your child participating, I would ask you to send me an email. Details of the event can be found at http://www.vicinterschools.com.au/ The site is simple to navigate and you can access information on dates, divisions, events, costs etc. Events include Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Ski Cross, Moguls and Alpine Giant Slalom. Division 4, 5 & 6 events (which covers all Primary levels) are on Monday 19th, Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st August. When making bookings, please keep in mind our HPS Athletics Carnival is on Thursday 22nd August! Please contact me with any questions or your expression of interest.
YEAR 6 INTERSCHOOL SPORT The Year 6 Sport teams had a highly effective training session last Thursday in brilliant sunshine, honing skills and developing match day strategies. This week we play host to St. Michael’s. Netball is at HPS, Football at Lynden Park and Soccer and Softball is at Hartwell Sports Ground. Go Hartwell! MELBOURNE REBELS VS WARATAHS: FRI MAY 31ST @ AAMI STADIUM Ever supportive and very generous Hartwell parent Chris Howell has offered tickets to Hartwell families for the Melbourne Rebels versus Waratahs match on Friday 31st May. Chris has given me twenty adult/kids tickets to give away. Chris tells me this is the final game and it may well determine which team makes the finals – he promises it will be a cracker! It is first in best dressed, so please email me if you are interested in free rugby union tickets. And of course, thank you to Chris Howell.
Enjoy the weather and have a great week.

Word of the Week at Hartwell!
‘Word of the Week’ is running extremely successfully across the school. Each week, the
students will have a particular word that is unique to their year level that they have to try
and use during the week in their speaking and writing.
Each week, there will be a list of all the ‘Words of the Week’ across the school in this
newsletter. It would be great to discuss the ‘Word of the Week’ with your child at home
and possibly use it in conversation or a piece of writing.
