Each student performed well, tried his / her best and cheered on their team- mates. We are very proud of each competitor. At the end of the day it was exciting to hear that Hartwell had won the shield for the best performed school, finishing just ahead of Glen Iris, our nearest rival. This can only happen when the students perform as a team and all do their best and when the team is well prepared. Congratulations to Mrs Bayes and Mrs Halpin for their excellent preparation of our students. Thanks to all our parent supporters and particularly to those who cheered, encouraged and assisted at the sports. Further details about this event are included later in the newsletter. Tickets for ‘The Little Mermaid’ An order form for ‘The Little Mermaid’ tickets was distributed to each family today. Please make sure you order tickets if you intend coming to the school production. Current Hartwell students do not need to purchase tickets on the night they are performing, but if they want to watch the other cast perform, they will require tickets. Initially we will allocate a maximum of four tickets per family and if there are extra available, we will fill the requests for larger orders. As stated on the order form, tickets will be sent home with the oldest child closer to the date of the production. Student Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews The mid-year student reports will be completed, printed and sent home towards the end of this term - probably late in the second last week. Parents who will be away on holidays can let me or the office staff know whether they would prefer us to keep their child’s report until next term or post it to your home address. the school office. Thanks for your assistance with this matter. Staffing Gretchen O’Donnell will be on long service leave from next Monday 5 June until the end of term. Gretchen has an exciting holiday planned and I hope she has a great break from school. Adrian O’Connor and Michael Lee will also be taking long service leave from the start of term three, for six weeks. Gretchen will be replaced by Anna Ritchie, Adrian by Lynn Jack and Michael will also be replaced by Anna Ritchie. As I have said previously, we are fortunate to have such a loyal and enthusiastic group of relieving teachers who are well known to our students. We recently appointed several new staff as follows:

Matthew Frampton- to replace Clare Hyland when Clare begins her family leave in August

Lauren Foster who will replace Jessica De Zilwa when Jessica begins her family leave

Anna Ritchie who will work in Year 4 this term and next term to cover the teachers taking leave. Anna will also work at Hartwell in term 4, in a support role in the middle years.

Olivia Young who will work as a teacher aide three days per week.

Reminders

Year 5 and 6 students who want to be in the ‘draw’ to attend the Somers Camp, must return their notices by tomorrow, not Thursday as was listed on the note you received yesterday.

Term Two concludes on Friday 30 June at 2.30pm. There will be an assembly at 2.00pm.

The whole school production of “The Little Mermaid” will be held at The George Woods Performing Arts Centre at Yarra Valley Grammar School on June 27 and June 29.

Please check the lost property baskets for items of school uniform. At the end of each term, we donate the unclaimed and un-named school uniforms in lost property to a charity. At the moment these baskets are overflowing!

We have two Curriculum Days planned for the remainder of 2017- Monday July 17 and Monday October 9. These are the first day of terms three and four. A child-care program will operate on each of these days, providing sufficient numbers of students enrol.

Kris Moore Principal SCHOOL PRODUCTION We need your help to advertise our School Production of The Little Mermaid Jr! Draw an image that you associate with the Little Mermaid- it could be Ursula or Ariel or even a group of characters together. Or maybe the scene from your song. Please don’t trace the image- we want them all to be unique and different. Also make them bright and colourful!! There is a template attached to the newsletter. Images will used for posters around the school and some will be selected for the Program given out on the night. Bring them to the Art room with your name and grade on the back before Friday 9th June. Thanks- School Production Team PE UPDATE GLEN IRIS DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY What a fantastic morning we had last Tuesday at Nettleton Park as sixty one Hartwell runners competed in the Glen Iris District Cross Country Meet. The conditions were perfect for cross country as runners competed in age groups. Every race had up to ninety competitors, all vying for success. Although our Hartwell team was buzzing with excitement, there was an undercurrent of nerves as everyone wanted to do their best and do the Hartwell banner proud. We had a number of runners representing HPS at the District level for the very first time, which was extremely pleasing. The team had trained hard, but this event was a real step up from our House Cross Country and the runners took nothing for granted. The 9/10 year olds had to run 2kms and the 11 and 12/13 year olds had to run 3kms. We had some stunning results, with 21% of our runners finishing in the top ten. However, it was the overall depth and wonderful results by the team as a whole that saw Hartwell named Cross Country Champions for 2017. We had 60% of our runners finishing in the top third of the field in every race earning valuable points for our school. Although we ran as individuals, we were competing as a team and supporting each other. The determination shown by every team member was outstanding, with everyone giving his or her best effort. Our hard work payed off. Glen Iris PS took the early lead and

challenged us all day. However, we managed to nudge them out by only 44 points to bring home the shield. Congratulations to our Captains Bowen H. and Lauren P. for representing HPS and graciously accepting the District Shield. We have thirteen runners who have now qualified for the Boroodara Division event to be held at Ruffey Lake Park on Thursday 8th June. These runners finished in the top ten at the District event. Best wishes to: 9/10yr Boys: Oscar S (1st), Edouard G (10th) 9/10yr Girls: Emma W (2nd), Lucinda H (5th), Brooke F (7th), Ruby F (10th) 11yr Boys: Xavier T (4th), Nick G (6th) 11yr Girls: Siena C (2nd), Amelia H (4th) 12/13yr Boys: Bowen H (3rd), Daniel H (4th) 12/13yr Girls: Lauren P (10th) Thank you to Miss. Chen for taking on the role of team manager and head cheer leader, and to Miss. Hunt for running the results table. Thank you to the parents who came along and supported the runners and in particular to Rachel Sutherland and Jacqui Borrett for travelling on the bus with the team. Finally, a special mention to Timothy Y (S5C) who typifies the Hartwell spirit and demonstrates that we are not all about winning at Hartwell. Timothy found himself in a situation where a runner close by to him had stopped to walk and was having trouble breathing. Those who know Timothy will not be surprised to hear that he stopped to assist this runner and walk with him, until they came across a parent supervisor on the course, who could call back to the officials for assistance. Thank you, and well done to Timothy, for demonstrating such empathy and not evening thinking about his own standing in the race. More importantly to Timothy, was the wellbeing of the other runner. Well done, Timothy. Go Hartwell! Yr 6 Interschool Sport We had some great results from our Year 6 Interschool Sport matches last Thursday. Football had a whopping 125 point win. Soccer won 10-0. Our netballers are still working hard and demonstrating great persistence and resilience. Both teams however, went down by over 20 goals. Our two softball teams combined to make one mixed team as St. Cecilia’s only had a mixed team. It was wonderful to see our girls demonstrating their outstanding skills. A special mention to Michaela M for her great pitching. Our players have an extremely good understanding of the strategies of softball and we have a few boys with baseball experience. It was extremely pleasing to have teachers from the opposing team compliment a couple of our boys on their sportsmanship, as these boys took it upon themselves to provide some 1st base coaching, and assist St. Cecilia’s to learn and understand the strategies of the game a little better. Well done to Ryan M and Ryan L on their outstanding maturity and sportsmanship. This

week we play Ashburton PS. Netball will be at HPS, Football at Burwood Reserve, Soccer and Softball at Hartwell Sportsground. HOOP TIME BASKETBALL This Friday is the first of our Hoop Time days for 2017. Our Year 3 and 4 All Star Boys and Girls will play at Nunawading Basketball Stadium in the Glen Iris District Day. Congratulations to all Yr. 3 and 4 students who trialled for Hoop Time over the past couple of weeks. It is wonderful to see students who don’t play basketball outside of school wanting to have a go and be a part of the action. Our Mixed Future Stars and Rookies teams will play on Thursday 27th July. Have a terrific week. Jo Bayes PE Teacher & Sport Co-ordinator
