December 2011 NewsletterREMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS

Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LM policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) for access instructions.

Call Plant Protection (7-4646) if you have an incident or injury on the range.

ADDITIONAL REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS AND RANGE USERS

Please be sure to observe the speed limits on the range access road. Please be careful when driving on the roads, the horses may not move out of your way. Gate signs are in place indicating when horses are in the pasture – if the sign says “horses in

pasture” they need to be kept closed. New signs have been added to help make sure it is clear if the gate should be open or closed.

Archery Hunting boundaries have been significantly constrained due to hazardous propulsion testing – adherence to restrictions are MANDATORY – see Archery Section and your Archery representatives for more info!

Watch out for Rattlesnakes at the range! If you do not have your child’s Hunter Education (HE) or Home Firearm Safety (HFS) Card

you will be turned away from being able to shoot. Run a copy of the card and present it to the RSO the next time you are out. As these cards never expire, if you provide the copy once, you should be Ok for the future. If you need to get a copy of your HE card, call the Division of Wildlife or show a license that has the proof of Hunter Ed verified on it.

DECEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING – BOARD NOMINATIONS

Don’t forget that the General Membership meeting on Monday December 12th will be your opportunity to nominate yourself or someone else for the 2012 Board. We will also have special guests from the Colorado School of Trades. They will present an overview of what they do and what services they can provide to our club. Thanks to Gene Adamson for setting this up.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Happy Holidays! The year started out kind of slow but looking back, it has just flown by! While we have only had a taste of winter, more cold weather and snow are soon going to be here! Be sure to keep an eye on the road conditions and please be careful when driving to the range. We’ve had a few folks get stuck

SHFC December 2011 Newsletteron the big inclines on either side of the hogback. It’s a long walk to get help if you are in a spot where there is no cell coverage!

We are scheduled to have our next general membership meeting on December 12th at the clubhouse. We will have a guest speaker from the Colorado School of Trade to talk to us about their gunsmithing program. Gene Adamson just took several of the club guns into them to be “worked over” after a number of years of hard usage! They should come back ready for another ten years of hard use. The main focus of the meeting will be taking nominations for the upcoming elections. All but two of the director positions are open for election. The open director position is a three-year commitment, the president is a two-year commitment (one year as the sitting president, one year as the past-president), and the other positions are only for one-year. If you have ever thought “somebody ought to do something” about this or that, here is your chance! It’s YOUR club and we need YOUR help! No experience required, just an open mind and new ideas! If you have any questions about running for the BOD, please let me know.

As of the final November class, we have added 64 people to the pool of RSOs. That gives the club a total of about 140 trained RSOs who are capable of running the ranges. If you have been through the RSO class, you are certified to run the range! With this many folks, we really should not have any problems getting the weekends staffed. We really need to start getting some scheduling done more than a week ahead of time. PLEASE take a look at your personal calendars and sign up for some of the weekend time slots. With the shutdown between Christmas and New Year’s Day, we’re going to have a great opportunity to get some quality shooting time in, but only if we have RSO support. Can you imagine the disappointment when Santa brings little Johnny a new .22 rifle and he can’t come out and shoot it because the range isn’t open? We’ll have a heavy-duty extension cord out there to run the heater in the RSO shed! Contact me ([email protected]) or Gene Adamson ([email protected]) if you have any questions or if you would like to go through a “mentoring session” to get familiar with the range operations.

We still have plenty of SHFC T-shirts available. They will make great holiday gifts! They are $10 apiece. They are a great way to show your club support and to advertise the club while you are shooting at outside events. If you would like to purchase a few, let me know.

As I have been saying for months, we still need a lot more membership participation to run the club and the ranges with this new method of operation. We’ve identified even more new jobs that need doing. Keep an eye on the emails for some of these announcements! We’ve got jobs that range from records keeping to running to Wal-Mart to landscaping! Don’t wait until February to get your workbond done! Norm Viste ([email protected]) is our Workbond Chair and has a list of tasks that need to be done.

SHFC December 2011 NewsletterREQUIRED MANDATORY MEMBER TRAINING SESSIONS COMPLETED

If you are an existing member and you DID NOT attend any of the myriad of training sessions over the last few months you will be required to rejoin the club as a new member if you wish to continue your membership. If you have questions – please contact: Gene Adamson ([email protected]) or Jim Cathcart ([email protected]).

MEMBER ANNUAL TEST SUPPORT - WORKBOND

Many of you colorful members provided fascinating inputs over the specific questions of the annual member test required. I told you that if you complained, you could “own” that question. So, here’s your chance. The company wants both the Annual Safety Briefing and a test taken by each active member. We need a database of questions to select from. Please submit your complete questions and answer selections to Brian Sompayrac, [email protected] or Gene Adamson, [email protected] for consideration. If your questions are selected for the database, you will receive a half hour of workbond per successful question submitted. Please remember that the function of a “good” test is to reinforce knowledge and ensure understanding. We already have old, stupid, gotcha and incorrect questions…we don’t need any more of those. Call or email Brian or Gene if you need any information.

WINTER 3-GUN

Winter 3-Gun started off on the traditional Black Friday with a great group of 15 shooters. Got in 4 fun stages and we were done by about 1 pm. The rest of Winter 3-Gun matches will be held once a month on Saturday mornings.  Setup starts at 8:30 am with first shot at 9 am.  Match date for this season are: December 10th; January 28th: February 25th; March 24th and April 28th.  For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed.  Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? Winter 3-gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. Winter 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

HIGH POWER RIFLE RESULTS & NEWS

Below are results from our Veterans Day High Power match. Although it was blustery and cool, and targets had to be reinforced with drywall shims, we were able to complete the match with only one competitor withdrawing.

In honor of Veterans Day, a cease-fire on all ranges was called at “…the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month..” for a reading of “Flanders Field” from Don “Teddy” Brehm. We were then treated to a low and fast flyover of four F-16s in formation. All in all, an awesome Veterans Day match!

We welcome all types of high power service or match rifles; some choose to shoot the Garand or M1A but the AR15 is the choice of most. The club has three AR15s, a Garand, two shooting mats, and a spotting scope with stand which are available to use during matches. We will continue shooting throughout the Fall & Winter, weather permitting.

Check the club website for the regional schedule as well as articles for the aspiring High Power competitor. For further information, or to check out club equipment, please call Gene Adamson (1-1531) or Dennis Casey (1-7197) with any questions.

CMP NEWS

DONATION INFORMATION (provided by David Potter):The CMP program is no longer funded by the military and with the upcoming cuts it may be on the list.

For those that donate to the United Way you can designate your donation to go to the Civilian Marksmanship Program as discussed in this link: http://www.odcmp.com/Comm/FAQs.htm

In step 3 of the donation form, in the place for Agency name - write "Civilian Marksmanship Program." The address is 1401 Commerce Blvd., Anniston AL 36207.

Or you can donate directly to the CMP: Checks should be made out to CMP Donations, 1470 Sentinel Drive, Anniston AL, 36207.

The Skyline Hunting and Fishing club is an affiliated member with the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and, as such, is privilege to such benefits as direct purchase of surplus US military rifles, surplus ammunition, and competition shooting accessories. The History of the CMP dates back to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt, and Federal legislation, enacted by the US Congress, established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice to foster improved marksmanship among military personnel and civilians. President Roosevelt had considerable vision into what might lie ahead in the future of the United States in the creation of the CMP. The commissioning of a new service rifle from the Springfield Arsenal [The M1903 Springfield, and its new .30-06 cartridge, became the standard by which every service rifle and military ammunition would be judged and holds true even to this day], and the commissioning of naval forces which were needed to supply the allies some 11 years later as Europe erupted into what became known as “The Great War” to which the US entered in 1917.Until 1996 the CMP was administered by the US Army Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) at which time it became a federally chartered corporation known as The Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety (CPRPFS) by act of Congress under title 36 of the US code of Federal regulations which now administers the CMP.So, what does all this mean to SHFC members? As an affiliated club with the CMP, the club and its members can purchase, directly from CMP, “retired” military rifles (no handguns) which the US government has declared surplus and which are transferred to the CMP for distribution. For history buffs and collectors, these firearms represent a tangible history of our nations rise to a democratic world power and how we used that power to defeat those nations which would choose to conquer, occupy, and enslave other peoples throughout Europe and Asia. The CMP, in carrying out its Congressional mandate, holds the National Matches at Camp Perry in Ohio every year which are open to any civilian who wishes to participate. There are many categories of marksmanship competitions both for service rifle and service pistol, for which marksmanship awards are presented to the top competitors. At SHFC, we hold service rifle and match rifle competitions, based on the CMP competition rules, every “off” Friday. In addition, several “off” Fridays are designated as Vintage Service Rifle matches where participants will compete with their M1903’s, M1 Garands, and foreign vintage service rifles.Corey Kroll, [email protected], is the SHFC coordinator and club liaison with the CMP and can help any member who wishes to make a purchase work through the paperwork. When Gallup first asked Americans this question in 1959, 60% favored banning handguns. But since 1975, the majority of Americans have opposed such a measure, with opposition around 70% in recent years.

EDITORIAL: Democrats cling to their guns, The Washington Times, October 27, 2011Gun ownership is on the rise in some surprising places. As much as President Obama would have us believe that only small-town yokels “cling to guns or religion,” a Gallup poll released Wednesday suggests many of the firearms that have been flying off the shelves in the past two years were purchased by Democrats and women. The Second Amendment has truly gone mainstream.

Lawsuit Seeks to Overturn California Open Carry Ban, The Desert Independent, October 29, 2011On December 15 a Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit will be filed seeking an injunction against a California law that was passed in 1967 which makes it a crime to openly carry a loaded firearm. Ironically, AB 144 recently passed by the California Legislature and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown making it a crime to openly carry even an unloaded handgun has greatly simplified the lawsuit.

Justice Stevens & Mrs. Obama Reminding Us our 2A Rights are One Liberal SCOTUS Judge Away from Destruction, ammoland.com, October 30, 2011Recently, Time magazine asked Stevens what he would fix about the American judicial system. Stevens’ response: “I would make all my dissents into majority opinions.” Fair enough, since he’s entitled to think he is right, even when a majority of his former colleagues and a larger majority of the American citizenry disagree. But then Time asked Stevens to single out one issue in particular, and he said, “I would change the interpretation of the Second Amendment.” Referring to the Court’s decisions in the Heller and McDonald cases that the Second Amendment protects individuals from federal, state and local infringements on their right to possess and carry arms, he added “The court got that quite wrong.”

Feinstein may have inadvertently confirmed Gunwalker ulterior motive, Gun Rights Examiner, November 01, 2011In a breaking news report concerning the Gunwalker scandal, Seattle Gun Rights Examiner Dave Workman indicates that Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-California, may have inadvertently confirmed the ulterior motive behind the scheme known as 'Operation Fast and Furious.'However, when it became Senator Dianne Feinstein's turn to question Breuer, the focus immediately changed to the 'need for gun control' and bans of so-called 'assualt weapons.' How the War on Terror Has Militarized the Police, The Atlantic, November 07, 2011At around 9:00 a.m. on May 5, 2011, officers with the Pima County, Arizona, Sheriff's Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team surrounded the home of 26-year-old José Guerena, a former U.S. Marine and veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq, to serve a search warrant for narcotics. As the officers approached, Guerena lay sleeping in his bedroom after working the graveyard shift at a local mine. When his wife Vanessa woke him up, screaming that she had seen a man outside the window pointing a gun at her, Guerena grabbed his AR-15 rifle, instructed Vanessa to hide in the closet with their four-year old son, and left the bedroom to investigate. Within moments, and without Guerena firing a shot--or even switching his rifle off of "safety"--he lay dying, his body riddled with 60 bullets. A subsequent investigation revealed that the initial shot that prompted the S.W.A.T. team barrage came from a S.W.A.T. team gun, not Guerena's. Guerena, reports later revealed, had no criminal record, and no narcotics were found at his home.

SHULER & STEARNS: Nation needs right-to-carry reciprocity, The Washington Times, November 11, 2011As elected officials in Congress, we take seriously our oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the liberties and rights afforded to American citizens. This includes the Second Amendment, and we believe the bureaucratic, piecemeal right-to-carry reciprocity system in our nation threatens the ability of law-abiding American citizens to exercise this vital constitutional right. The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, H.R. 822, provides a bipartisan, common-sense solution to this problematic system. We are proud to be sponsors of this legislation, which has overwhelming support in the House, with 245 bipartisan co-sponsors and counting. The intent of our bill is simple: If you can legally carry a concealed weapon in one state, you can legally carry a concealed weapon in all states.

The Eloquence of Obama's Inaction, American Thinker, November 14, 2011Purposeful inaction is a form of passive-aggressive behavior.  Doing or saying nothing is still doing something.  William Shakespeare once said:  "Action is eloquence."  Barack Obama is considered by some to be an eloquent speaker, but the President's rhetoric is meaningless when his hollow words, regardless of how well-executed, are followed up with inaction. In the past, Obama has been quick to remark on issues and events of which he disapproves.  Unable to contain himself, oftentimes uncontrolled frustration and disdain inappropriately spill out in public forums.  If the President senses rejection, he responds contemptuously by expressing unsolicited opinions.

False alarms over nat’l CCW legislation only help anti-gunners, Gun Rights Examiner, November 14, 2011This week, perhaps as early as Tuesday, the House of Representatives will vote on HR 822, the National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, and hysteria about this legislation is not merely coming from the usual gun prohibitionist corners.   Incredible to some, perhaps, but one organization – the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) – is working just as hard as anti-gun Sen. Frank Lautenberg and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy to derail the measure and get President Obama to promise a veto. Maybe harder. Why?

Why The Right To Keep And Bear Arms Is A Human Right, ammoland.com, November 16, 2011Everything that exists has a nature.Arms are the means by which a human must defend himself when all other attempts fail or when the threat to life is imminent. That is the reason our founders included the Second Amendment to the Constitution in our Bill of Rights. They fully understood that the right itself was not theirs to grant or deny. They did recognize that the right to keep and bear arms to protect one’s freedom is an inherent right and that under no circumstances should the group be allowed to infringe upon that right.

Gun Rights Crusaders Target State Over Definition of "Assault Weapon", San Francisco Weekly, November 18, 2011The term "assault weapon" has always rankled Second Amendment absolutists. Handled properly, an umbrella could be an "assault weapon." Considering the purpose of a weapon, the term "assault weapon" is rather redundant.

SHFC December 2011 NewsletterFor all of those that would like to relive the “Finals Experience” at the end of each year of school – a quiz provided by Gene Adamson. Answers will be provided in the Jan 2012 newsletter.Whitetails Unlimited's Deer Quiz - Test Your knowledge About Whitetail Deer

Part 1: True or False

The white-tailed deer is the most popular big-game animal in North America, and is an amazing example of an animal that adapts and perseveres. As hunters go into the woods in pursuit of this graceful animal, here is a quiz from Whitetails Unlimited to see how much you really know about the whitetail's biology, behavior and history.

True / False 1) Deer are strong swimmers, in part because they have a layer of hair that is hollow, providing buoyancy in the water.

2) Deer have existed for 20 million years, and have had the same basic form for the last one million years.

3) Deer can run in excess of 35 miles per hour.

4) Deer can leap over fences eight feet tall.

5) Deer can cover 30 feet in a horizontal leap.

6) Just like humans, deer have a set of "baby teeth" that fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth.

7) You can tell how old a male deer is by how many points there are on his antlers.

8) Deer use their antlers during the winter to dig for food under the snow.

9) When antlers grow, they are covered with "velvet," a soft, fuzzy tissue. This velvet is the only regenerating skin found in mammals.

10) Like cows, deer have four stomachs.

11) Deer can eat poison ivy without ill effect.

12) Deer are native to every state in the U.S.

13) The reason fawns are born with a pattern of white spots is so the mother can recognize her offspring.

14) Deer have extraordinary senses, including sight, hearing and smell.

15) Newborn deer have no scent, and the mother will place the fawn by itself in a secluded spot for protection against predators.
