HOW ISF MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Today, approximately 40% of Cambodia’s population live on less than $2 per day. Consequently, children often work long hours outside school, or are taken out of school completely in order to help financially support their family.

The poverty they live in not only

strips them of their childhood,

it means that they miss out

on education, vital life skills

that are taught through peer

interaction and play, and strong

foundations to help them build a

brighter future.

HOW ISF’S FOOTBALL PROGRAMME CHANGED MY LIFE

For Nita*, a 17 year-old student, finding opportunities to play wheelchair football in Cambodia isn’t easy. But ISF’s inclusive Football Programme has beginning to change that.

Nita recently attended our All Abilities Football Tournament at the ISF Sports Ground in Preah Theat Village, Phnom Penh and took a few minutes out to tell us more about what football and tournaments like this mean to her:

“When I was younger I liked to play football but because I use a wheelchair I didn’t have many opportunities to do so. Fortunately now it’s different – ISF coaches offer training sessions once a week on Saturdays. I really like my coaches, they make me feel like I’m complete as I am and they give me an opportunity to have fun.

Football has also offered me opportunities to meet new people; for example, at today’s All Abilities Tournament, we started by playing a game where we passed the ball to each other and introduced ourselves. Meeting new people and participating in tournaments like this is really important to me. I wish for even more tournaments in the future. Not only do I get to meet other players but I

get a chance to play football on the beautiful pitch at the ISF Sports Ground. My parents are pleased too, they’ve welcomed the opportunity for me to socialise more and get involved in community activities.

Since joining the ISF’s Football Programme, I’ve learned how to play the game properly and am generally having a lot more fun than before. Playing sport gives me energy and I feel like I can concentrate and do my homework better after playing. It also has given me more confidence in myself, I feel braver and no longer feel as stressed and sad as I used to.

I think people worry about me because I use a wheelchair. Often, they’ll keep asking me if I’m doing okay during a match because they’re concerned when I get hit by the ball. I tell them not only am I doing okay but I’m really enjoying playing.”


ISF’s Education Programme provides almost 700 children marginalised by poverty with quality education and healthcare to give them a strong platform from which they can launch themselves into further education, training or employment.

Our catch-up Education Programme teaches two grades of the Khmer curriculum in one year. Once students reach the appropriate grade for their age, we support them to study at local state school.

We offer ongoing holistic support to all our Education Programme students including, but not limited to healthcare, nutrition, educational materials and fees, English, employability skills, computer skills, personal development and extracurricular activities.

Our Football Programme was created in response to the lack of access to sports and play for youth from poor communities at a local and national level. Today, we aim to increase access to sports, build life skills, and improve the quality of life for underprivileged youth.

The programme consists of almost 4,000 girls and boys, and youth of different abilities. This includes deaf and hearing-impaired players, blind and visually impaired players, wheelchair users, HIV positive players and others with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Our coaches use their training sessions as an important vehicle for social change and teach social awareness about issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence, child trafficking and gender equality.

ISF works closely with the community and village leaders to make sure our education centres do not exist in a vacuum but serve to foster community development.

Our goal is to create a good foundation for the children in our programmes and opportunities for their families, so that they have the skills to changetheir own lives for the better.

Projects include: adult literacy, community and mobile libraries, vocational training and hygiene initiatives such as Soap For Hope which recycles discarded barsof soap from hotels in Cambodia and distributes them to people in need, promoting community development by preventing disease and creating jobs.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FUNDRAISING

Say hi! Make sure you contact us to tell us about your fundraising efforts so that we can support you and give you all the material you may need.

What?Think about an activity that you’d like to do (see our list on the right if you’re stuck for ideas). You can always combine events too!

Where?Decide where to hold your event/activity and whether you need to ask permission.

When?Choose the ideal date and time for people to attend, make sure it doesn’t clash with anything else. If you’re doing a fitness challenge, make sure you give yourself enough time to train properly.

Who?Consider who your event is aimed at and who to invite. Make sure to tell all your friends, family and colleagues and any community groups you may be a member of.

GoalsDecide on your fundraising goal and plan how you intend to raise this money. Make it visibleto your supporters and keep them updated on your progress. If you have a clear goal it’ll be much easier to encourage people to get involved and help you reach it.

Collecting the moneyHow will you collect the money? We recommend making an online donation page such as gogetfunding.com to collect funds from your supporters. Need a hand setting it up? Just get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.

ShareThink about how you will promote and share your event, remember to use social media, send emails, put up posters etc. Post regular updates!

Local Media Working with your local media can be a great way to boost the number of guests at your event. Write a short press release about your event or challenge Don’t forget to include your online fundraising page and our website: www.indochinastarfish.org. If you get stuck thinking of what to write get in touch with us and we can provide a template.

FUNDRAISE ONLINEThe simplest way to ask friends, family or colleagues to sponsor you is to set up an online fundraising page. Having an online fundraising page is a fantastic way to maximise your fundraising. It takes minutes to set up and takes the stress out of collecting cash and cheques as all donations on your page will come directly to us. If you’re strapped for time or can’t figure it out, we’ll be happy to set one up in your name - just get in touch and ask!

Try to make your page as personal as possible by adding videos and photos. Be as clear as you can in letting your supporters know who you are fundraising for and why. Don’t forget to keep them updated with your progress.

Here’s how to set up your online fundraising page:

1. Go to our approved fundraising website, GoGetFunding

2. Click “launch your fundraiser”

3. Fill in the required fields

4. When you come to “What kind of fundraiser would you like to create” choose the one with a specific end date. Here, underneath the calendar, we recommend choosing an amount you’d like to make as your target.

5. We suggest that in the description field, you explain why ISF matters to you and what you hope your fundraising will achieve. Your personal story is better than anything we could but please contact us if you need a steer.

6. When it comes to adding photos and video, we’ve got you. You can find a selection to chose from here.

Once your page is set up, share it everywhere you can think of! Post the link on your social media pages such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and email the link to your friends, family and colleagues. It’s a good idea to donate to yourself first and then to ask those likely to sponsor you with a larger amount first. Hopefully, this will encourage other sponsors to be just as generous with their sponsorship.

Online sponsorship saves everyone time as you don’t have to collect donations and we don’t have to follow-up. It reduces our costs so we can focus on the most important part of our jobs - providing quality education to the children that are most in need of it.
