VOLUME 1 THE CAFE TOWN CHRISTIAN NUMBER 3

GREETINGS ONCE AGAIN IN THE NAME OF OUR BLESSED LORD AND SAVIOR. "GUR FLEA HEREAT THE TIP OF AFRICA IS "CAPE TOWN FOR CHRIST", THE PAST YEAR HAS SEEN THE ESTABLISHi-MENT OF THE TVYNBERG CHURCH OF CHRIST AND THE BEGINNING OF THE CAPE BIBLE SEMINARY.A NEW MENISTER IS COMING TO CAPETOWN, CALLING CAMPAIGNS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED IN THESUBURBS OF BELLVILLE AND BERGVLIET. TOGETHER WITH THE OBSEBVATORY CHURCH OF CHRISTA NEW CAMPAIGN IS BEING COJroUCTED TO BEGIN A CHURCH OF CHRIST IN THE COLOURED LOCATION OF BO^ITEHEUVEL. WORK WITH THE NATIVE CHILDREN AT NYANGA IS PROGRESSING WELL.

I&iowing the fear of the Lord, and how He has commanded us to preach the word toall the world, we plead for the salvation of souls here in Cape Town, FJe plead forthe unity of all believers by the restoration of the Church as revealed in the Wordof God, We plead for simple New Testament Christianity as taught by the apostles ofour Lord Jesus Christ, There is only one divinely established church. It is the bodyof Christ, In our calls, in our talks, in a visit to the Methodist Guild and thebarber shop we seek to exalt Christ and point men to the 3iji5)le New Testament church. There are many different beliefs in Cape Town, ranging from Islam to Roman Catholicismand Judaism to Mormonism, but if we would all come to Christ and, obeying his gospel, become a part of his body the Church, vre would be united and Cape Town would be won forChrist.

Definite attempts have been and are being made toward this end. The Wynberg Churchof Christ, long a dream among the Christians here, has now been established, 71 werepresent at the Dedication Service last May, over SO when M^ Randall spoke, and over 60when A1 Hamilton preached at our two-week Revival in Januaiy. Looking to the future wehave begun serious Bible training in vdiat is now a rudimentary forra of the CAPE BIBLESEMINARY meeting for 2-J hours of intensive study and note-taking on Saturday afternoonswith Quarterly exams. Term paper and outside reading are also required, and not morethan one absence is permissible. Only 7 students, only a beginning, but Lord willingsome day the CAFE BIBLE SEMINARY shall be a supply centre for ministers and missionariesthroughout Mrica, educating them and sending them forth to fields white unto harvest.

Brother Jack Clough, graduate of Manhattan Bible College, plans to come to CapeTown as the new minister for the W3mberg Church of Christ, This will give us the opportunity to establish a new church in another suburb of Cape Town, In Cape Town thereare 600,000 people of many races and creeds living in 60 different suburbs. Right nowwe have two instrumental churches of Christ (Observatory, Wynberg), six a-capella (CqpeTown. Woodstock, Lansdowne, Wynberg, Grassy Park, Simonstown) and one very ANTI- (Rose-bank), This one ANTI is so ANCI it is stirring up a great deal of unrest and making abad name for the rest of us. With about 10,000 people in each suburb we need at leastone church of Christ in each — that is 60 churches of Christ, We will establish churchas fast as we can get ministers. If you are interested in working for Christ in CapeTown please write directly to us at "Maranatha". The time is short Maranatha.

New efforts are being made just now. Our Fishers of Men group has alrea(^ reachedout to Bellville and Bergvliet; and "hy the time you read this still further areas willlave received the implanted word — notably the new Colored location of Bonteheuvel, Worcontinues well at the Native location of Nyanga with brother Titus Solomon in charge,'.ast Sunday afternoon I gave an object lesson on "The Sword of the Spirit", If you wishjo assist us in the spread of the gospel here in Cape Town please send your contribution;bo our forwarding agent.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you all.

45- BROTHER TITUS SOLOMON COMMENDED TO YOU4^- V/YNBERG WORK ESTABLISHED

4^ PLANS FOR MOVING TO PRETORIA

We do thank God for your continued prayers and support in ourwork here at the Southern tip of the African Continent. The work ofthe Lord in every part of the globe is a tremendous challenge. Everyday brings us closer to the return of Christ. How necessary then thatwe each do our part, wherever we are, to bring the water of life tothirsty souls.

- Nancy and I have just returned from a trip t<^Kimberleyj- "The^"'^iamond City" ;620 miles N.E. of Cape Town, where we had the privilege

of visiting with Brother A1 Hamilton, minister of the Kimberley Churchof Christ, and his family. There were Ilj-S present at a special YouthService there on Sunday morning. Following irh©-service BrotherHamilton and I left for Johanneaburg - f.The Golden City"-- over 300miles further north, arriving there at the sun was setting behind theskyscrapers and the gold mines. We met in a Christian home for agospel service in the evening. By the time you read this BrotherHamilton will be living in Johannesburg and Brother Mills will havetaken over the ministry of the Kimberley Church.

Back in Gape Town I am taking part in a play entitled "At Gol-gotha" at the Observatory Church of Christ where Brother A1 Zimmermanis minister. Last night there were about 80 present for this Easter

^ play. I have the part of Nicodemus. There will be another presenta--.-c tion tonight, Lord willing. The play tells of the crucifixion of

\y Christ, the weeping of the women, the mocking of the soldiers, the^ gloating of Scribes and Pharisees, the protests of Joseph of Arimathea

\and Nicodemus, and ends with the conversion of the Centurion.Brother Titus Solomon, our brother in Christ and co-worker at

the Nyanga Sunday School for native children, is coming over to theStates in August this year, Lord willing. He plans to study at OzarkBible College to prepare for missionary work in his homeland here inAfrica. We commend him to you as a dedicated servant of Christ,

^.he Wynberg Church of Christ has now been fully established, andBrot^^ Jack Clough of California and his family have been called asministerT" Recently we have been teaching about the organization andofficers of the church, and at our business meeting next week we planto appoint elders and deacons. With the coming of Brother Clough ourwork with the Wynberg Church is drawing to its close. During ourministry here four have been baptized into Christ and 25 have placedtheir membership here. With Brother Zimmerman we have almost completed the first year of the Seminary. My class has gonethrough the books of the New Testament ^istles. In our Bible studieswe have studied the books of the Old Testament, We have helped in ourYouth Camp at Hout Bay, end held a Revival Meeting with Brother Hamilton. Nancy has started a Women's Group, and the Lord has indeedblessed and guided the work.

Now with Brother Clough coming wo must plan for a new work. Ournation's capitol,_^P;6',9_t.oidA#- has i million people and not one Churchof Christ, It is'^to this needy field that we are making plans to go.If need demands we could start an Afrikaans speaking Church there.Nancy and I are planning to make a survey trip there this^month.BrethsBn, pray for us and help us. THIS IS THE MONTH OP TRANSITION% A BREAKDOWN IN THE WILDERNESS 0P"T"HE KARROO•55- ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS IN PRETORIA•j:- annual FINANCIAL REPORT

CAPE BIBLE SEMINARY COMPLETES FIRST YEARA LOOK INTO THE FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Greetings to you all once again in the name of Christ. We wishto thank you for your continued prayers and support without which wewould not be here, and a big thank you to the Loyal Workers of La Harpewho bring this paper to you each month. Yes, this is the mon.ttL_of .transition — the month in which we leave the established work in CapeTown to.pioneer a new work in Pretoria, capitol of S. Africa. Forthis reason our newsletter is changing from the "Cape Town Christian"to the"Pretoria Pioneer". This move will take us about a. thousandmiles northward into a new field of labor, Brethnen pray for us, thatthe Lord may open the way.

On our recent survey trip into Pretoria the VW broke down with asiezed piston in the heart of the wilderness which is the Karroo at3 AM, We stopped immediately and signalled a passing motorist. Aftera while the car started and we went on slowly. It siezed again beforewe got to the little town of Beaufort West at i|. AM, Next morning (orrather later that morning) it was fixed and we were on our way.

We stayed with Brother A1 Hamilton in Johannesburg while we madeour survey of Pretoria 30 miles distant. Pretoria is the home of theVoortrekker Monument built in honor of the early South African pion-_..eers. We spoke to a young lady selling Post Cards there, and she"suggested we come and talk to the students at the University whereshe is studying. Brother Hamilton helped us find a flat (apartment),and the people there seemed very interested in the meetings we planto hold. As most of the people in that area are Afrikaans I plan toconduct the services in the Afrikaans language. I am fairly fluentin Afrikaans, having studied it in school. We believe this new workcan succeed, and we urge your further prayers and support.

Financial Report: In June of each year we publish an annualfinancial report. Prom July I96I to June 1962 wo received supportfrom churches and individuals to a total of Our salaryallowance is $375 per month plus $25 for expenses — that is $ij.500.00for salary, and $300 for expenses, "Thus at the end of this year, oursecond on the field, wo have a deficit of $3^6,55 which added to lastyear's deficit of $135*19 makes a total deficit of $501.7i^.

This month the CAPE BlIBLE SEMINARY completes its first year ofspecial advanced Bible Studies with 6 students actively engaged in2 courses. The examinations are scheduled for June 25 and CertificateDay on June 27. Two of the students are African men from the NativeLocation of Nyanga — Mr, Mdladlana and Mr. Nkozo, Both are doingvery well in the notes as well as the outside reading.

The work of Christ in South Africa is opening up and reachingnew horizons. Brother A1 Hamilton is now in South Africa's largestcity, Johannesburg, and making plans to purchase a $75^000 buildingthere. We are moving to South Africa's capitol, Pretoria, to ,sta.rtan Afrikaans "Kerk van Christus". Brother Max Randall..is pioneering

(over)

a new work in Northern Rhodesia, as well as beginning a weekly RadioProgram which will reach throughout Southern Africa starting in July,That God is blessing all of these efforts simply goes to show onceagain that with Him notjilng.. ia impossible." 'May you also find thistrue in your life, and may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ b^with you#

•«- FAREl^rELL TO WYNBERG BEGINNING OP "BYBEL LESINGS"i'r OUR MOVE TO PRETORIA THE URGENCY OP THE GOSPEL•5S- A WONDERFUL OPENING IN JOHANNESBURG

It is never easy to say good-by. The more so for us as we were 1leaving a church and the fellowship of people whom we had come to lovedearly in the Lord. Yet it is often so in the Lord's work. The fieldsare wide, the laborers are few, and the time is so short. So it wasthat, with Brother Clough coming to Wynberg, we were leaving for Pretoria. At a farewell service on June 20 we were presented with aslide-projector, a table cloth, and a bath towel from the folk at theVJynberg Church of Christ, The next day Tuckers Cartage came to getour furniture, and after the week-end we set off on the 1,000 milejourney nobth to Pretoria, the capital city of South Africa.

In a raging torrent of rain we left Cape Town at the southern tipof Africa, and headed Into the interior. Visibility was low as westeered the Vauxhall over the tortuous ascent of Du Toit's Kloof In athick mist. Then darkness came, and our headlights picked up thesparse shrubbery of the barren Karroo as we sped on through the night. In the grey light of dawn a lone car wound its way among the skyscrapers of Johannesburg - the Golden City - to Rockvlew Heights, thehome of A1 and Annette Hamilton. Now we were just 3ij. miles from Pretoria, and in fellowship with our co-worker in Christ. Arriving InPretoria we took the car in for servicing, and walked up PretoriusStreet to our new apartment In Canna Court. The furniture van wasthere already, and after two days we were settled in Pretoria,

On Sunday we drove into Johannesburg and I had the privilege ofpreaching at the Evening Service for Brother Hamilton. In an effortto promote the work of Christ in the Rand (consisting of all the citiesin the vicinity of Johannesburg) Brother Hamilton is making plans topurchase a $75*000 three-story church building right in the heart ofthe Golden City, Thus it was that on Monday Brother Hamilton and Imet with representatives of the other church to further negotiationsfor the purchase of their building. Our big enemy Is time. #10,000is needed this month to secure the property. If you wish to help inthis project please send a contribution to Brother Hamilton's forwarding agent: Mrs, A.W. Hamilton, Marceline, Mo, and designate It "Forthe Johannesburg church,"

But now let us tell you of our new work here in Pretoria. Alreadywe have printed invitations in the Afrikaans language for our "BYBELLESINGS" or Bible Readings. These are to be held in our apartmentevery Tuewday evening beginning tonight. In addition we are hoping tohold meetings at the Pretoria University, and Pretoria jail. As soonas we have contacted enough people we plan to rent a building forfull-time church services, in much the same manner as we have done inWynberg. Pray that the Lord will bring these pland to fruition according to His will, and for His name's honor and glory.

"The king's business requlreth haste." Now as never before weneed to feel in our hearts the urgency of the gospel. Souls are goingout into eternity and we stand on the very verge of Christ's return. The Word of Life must go out. The gospel must be proclaimed to allpeoples. It is the last hour. The hour of triumph and victory forthe church of Christ. Let us each one help to make It so. May theLord bless you and guide you, both in your own witness for Him, and Inyour prayers and support for His laborers far across the seas.

Your brethren in Christ,

GREETINGS FROM PRETORIA

We have been in Pretoria for onemonth now, and bring you greetings inthe name of Christ. Here we havestarted Bible Readings, and spoken toqirlte a few people in our area aboutthe precious gospel of Christ. We havediscovered tha t ' there is alreacfy aChurch of Christ here, and are considering moving closer to Johannesburgwhere the need is far greater. Thereare alreacfy two here who wish to obeytheir Lord in baptism, but are still alittle hesitant. We are praying thatthe Holy Spirit will convict them ofthe urgency of the gospel. We are notcertain just how much time we have lefton this old world. One day the endwill come and we will go to meet theLord, That day may be today. Let usbe about the Lord's business.

PROGRESS IN WYNBERG

He hasbeen using the set of ISO slides sent tohim by John Fulford. They are praying thatthey wil be able to come soon. WORK IN JOHANNESBURG

Brother A1 Hamilton in Johannesburg isnow making plans to purchase a large churchbuilding in Johannesburg. It is located inthe central part of town and can seat about300 people. Brother Zimmerman, who flew upto Johannesburg, and I attended a meetingwith him on Friday to mako further negotiations for the building. We also attendeda baptismal service in the evening when A1Hamilton baptised 9 people into Christ. Howwonderful it was to see them lowered intothe water, knowing that they were being buried with their Lord and rising up from thewaters to walk in newness of life.

At present they are meeting on Bezui -denhout Street and have an average atten -dance of over 20. Much work is being doneat the Rand Epileptic Home in CraighallPark, and I had the privilege of preachingthere in Afrikaans one Lord's Day.

DOES GOD CARE?

Into each life some rain must fall. Whenthings go wrong it is very easy to becomediscouraged. We all do; and it is in timeslike these that we ask, "Does God reallycare about me?" There are times when ourown sins and weaknes.qF!!=! make nw gpy. "Tsee how God could care about me?" There isonly one way to find the answer to thisquestion, and that is to remember Calvary.Close your eyes and see the Lord Jesus ashe hung in anguish upon the cross. See theSon of God giving up his own life's blood ofor you and me. The sun was darkened andthe earth shook, and in pain and anguish Hebreathed his last breath. If there had beenany doubt before that God loves us there .could be doubt no more. From the realms ofglory he came, to wear a human frame. Hesnatched us from the devil's claim, andJesus is hismatchless name.

While on earth Jesus had saidi "I wiil build my church." In this fascinating bookwe see that mission accomplished, not by Christ Himself, but by His Spirit workine inthe lives of His apostles.

The writer is Dr. Luke, who addresses this book to Theophilus, as he does hisgospel account of the life of Christ. Hbch of the book tells of the journeys and work

. of the apostle Paul of wnom buke was a close companion.. Since, the book closes so abruptly with the apostle Paul still alive as a prisoner

in Rome it is reasonable to suppose that Luke completed this account at that time, 65 AD.

•5^ RAND EPILEPTIC HOME NEWS AND NEEDS OP WYNBERGCALLING IN PRETORIA CHCRCH

45- CONTACTS WITH ANTI-INSTRB- «• BRETHREN, PRAY FOR USMENT CHURCH

Greetings again to you all in the name of our Lord and SaviorJesus Christ. As you know we are now in Pretoria working closely withBrother A1 Hamilton who is now ministering in Johannesburg just 3k-miles from us. Last Sunday afternoon I went with Brother Hamilton tothe Rand Epileptic Home in the suburb of Craighall Park. It was agreat privilege for me to conduct a service there in the Afrikaanslanguage. We sang hymns such as "Nader my God by U" and Welk ^nvriend het ons in Jesus", then I preached on the subject "Die doodvan Christus." (The death of Christ). How we rejoiced when, at theevening service, one of the men from the Home confessed Christ.

Here in Pretoria we have been making calls and appointments tobring our plea for simple New Testament Christianity before the people.7^% of the people here are Afrikaans speaking, and many of them belong to the Dutch-Reformed Church, One couple, Mr, & Mrs. Jordaan, are very close to obeying the Lord. They believe in baptism by immersion, but so far have not seen the necessity for it. Please pray thatthe Lord will guide them to know and do his will. I have also spokenwith an Anglican lady who teaches music at the Pretoria University. We spoke concerning the importance of God*s Word, and Bible teachingson salvation. She has asked me to make another appointment to furtherour study. I have also applied to Colonel Jacobs of the Pretoria Jailfor permission to hold services in the jail, and am awaiting his reply.

While calling at the Andrew McGollom Hospital I learned thatthere was an anti-instrument church of Christ in Pretoria, I went tocall on their minister. Brother John Hardin. In our talk I discoveredthat the only defence they have of note is a negative one: that as faras church historians are able to ascertain the instrument was not usedin the early church. Brother Hardin frankly admits that, using theNew Testament only, he could not condera the use of the instrument asan aid to singing. I attended an eldership class led by Brother Moneyof Houston, after which Brother Hardin and I had another session lasting until midnight. They had an excellent Vacation Bible School lastweek, and we sent Alandra Jo until she got a sore throat.

Now what of the Wynberg Church? When we loft Cape Town BrotherZimmerman very kindly agreed to give temporary oversight to that workuntil the arrival of Brother Jack Clough. We received word that theWynberg brethren are doing vary well on their own. Brother Thomas, anelderly Coloured man recently added to the Wynberg Church who fprqierlyhold services in his own home, has been taking charge of the services.Interest has also been growing among the Young People who led theservices one evening. The church also takes a monthly offering forthe Ozark Bible College School of Missions. I have received word thisweek from Brother Clough who is making plans to come to Cape Town tominister to the Wynberg Church, Thus far he has only been able toraise 10^ of his support. Brethren please lay this cause upon yourheart. We need a new man in Cape Town as soon as possible, not onlyto minister to the Wynberg Church, but also to assist Brother Zimmerman in the work of evangelism and teaching. How white is the harvest, and how few are the laborers! Will you pledge Brother Clough $3 amonth of your personal support to spread the work of the gospel inAfrica? Please write him a note today: JACK CLOUGH, 1^43 A STREET,CRESCENT CITY, CALIPORNIA.

Africa today is a land of turmoil and unrest. Many people herelive in darkness. 0 brethren, let us pray and work for the needysould we can reach for the master before it is too late. The time isshort! We stand on the brink of eternity!

Your oo-laborers in the search for souls.

WORK IN VALHALLA THE MISSIONARY HOME-j:- ARCADIA BIBLE STUDIES THE CALL OF CHRIST

THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER

We bring you greetings again in the name of our precious LordJesus Christ. You are constantly in our thoughts, and we do pray thatthe love of God and the grace of our Lord may be with you all. We dothank God for your continued prayers and support for our labors herein Africa. We know that He in turn will supply your every needthrough His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Out in Valhalla near the city of Pretoria the Lord has openedmany hearts to receive the simple Gospel of the New Testament, and toaccept our plea for the unity of all Christians by a return to thesole authority of God*3 Word. Already 20 have listened attentitivelyto our teaching, and have asked to be notified when the meetingsstart. In the meantime we have made application to Mr. Van Rensburgof the Valhalla School to rent the school hall for Lord's Day services and week-day Bible Studies. We are praying for the Lord toopen the way.

We are continuing with the Tuesday Evening Bible Studies at ourapartment in Arcadia. Since the people coming are bi-lingual we havethe scripture and prayer in Afrikaans, and the lesson in English,The attendance is small at these studies but those who are coming arevery interested in our plea, and anxious to learn more of the Churchof Christ. Mrs. Poltney is now very sick and in hospital. We dohope and pray that in this trying time she may be drawn closer to theLord,

"The Christian Messenger" our monthly church paper with summarystudies of the books of the Bible on the back is still going to over200 homes. It is particularly for members of the Wynberg Church ofChrist in Cape Town. This month we have had to make new address tabsfor the envelopes. These will print the addresses and can also beused as a card index when making calls. Mrs. Mephinlck, secretary andtreasurer of the Wynberg Church, had an operation recently but is muchbetter now. Special speakers from Observatory and Mr. Thomas ofWynberg are leading the services.

Just a few words about our hQme,..ll|'e.; I (Carroll) had themeasles last week and boy did I get teased about it. Let's just sayit^was a pretty measly experience. Nancy enjoys the beautiful warmclimate here. It is 80 degrees inside today. Our two daughters seemto be growing real fast. Alandra is I}, and baby Sandra will soon bereaching- the 1 year mark, " A1 and Ann'ette Hamilton, who are minister-

--ing in Johannesburg 35 miles away, are coming to visit us tomorrow.Lord willing.

Christ calls us all to servo Him, When we stand before theJudgment Bar of God we will each be judged according to our works. The Bible makes it very clear that there will be degrees of rewardsin heaven as well as degrees of punishment in hell. Christ is thefoundation and we must be careful how wo build on that foundation. We are not our own, we have been bought with a price. Let us therefore glorify and serve our Lord by words and deeds. Christians needto cultivate a concern for others. Witness Paul's decn concernhis brethren and the churches he established. He could wish himselfaccursed that they might be saved. Love like that should put usshamei We won't even go across the road to speak to someone abon^our wonderful Savior. Christ's heart burned with compassion for t'rxQlost. If we don't have that compassion, then we don't have the splv-^-bof Christ. And if we don't have the spirit of Christ then we are noneof His. May God g-cart U3 the grace to love toe list, aiid to x:ork for
