This past year for me has been one of illness, new studies, surprise events, andprogress oh "HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HOLY BIBLE" Physically I was struck several times withpharingitis, laringitis, bronchitis and influenza. Together with my involvement in anumber of funerals during the year this has given me much cause to ponder on the frailtyof human life. We are here on earth for such a short time, and it is so important that w®carry out the will of God for our lives. At the moment I am suffering with a slippeddisc in my back, and can hardly get around, so I am spending much time with God's Word.

1992 has also seen the opening of new Bible Studies in different areas. I ampreaching at Aloe Road in LENTEGEUR, and am also bringing Bible studies in Greenhavenon "THE LIVING PROPHETS" and in RAVENSMEAD on "PREACHING from the BIBLE" in addition tomy regular studies at Portland on "THE HOLY SPIRIT" and the Hazeldene area on "THERETURN of CHRIST."

Surprise events have also been a mark of this past year, from a surprise birthdayparty, where I found myself dressed up as JULIUS CAESAR at a Roman Festival, to an

amazing answer to prayer where God led us to a specific new home he had already shown us,to a totally unexpected trip to Europe where doors just miraculously opened for us toteach God's word there.

God has also led in a wonderful way with my proposed new book — HIGHLIGHTS of theHOLY BIBLEo Both Zondervan and Tyndale House Publishers have given permission for me touse exerpts from "EXPLORE THE BOOK" and "THE LIVING BIBLE" in this project. I look forward, by the grace of God, to continue teaching the word of God, andpreaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA in 1993, because Ibelieve that this is the only hope for South Africa In particular and for the world ingeneral. I am also looking forward to — believe it or not — the marriages of all three ofmy children in the near future. Yes, I'm happy to say that Timothy and Lori are backtogether. nSl =(o5Li) 5€--7^77It's such a privileo-e and joy to serve

the Lord here in Southern Africa today. There are so many

challenges and opportunities to spread His word. Thank you all very much foryour concern, your prayers, and your support.

For many years now Bryce and Judy Morgan have been serving the Lord and our Ministryto Cape Town faithfully and well. Much of the credit for our work here must go to them. They have acted as a life-line between you and us. No amount of thanks could ever beenough for what they have done. I am deeply grateful to them for the years which theyhave served so well. Now, unfortunately, pressures of work and problems of health makeit impossible for them to continue. We are trying to find another forwarding agent, butuntil then may I please ask you to be your own forwarding agent and mail your checksdirectly to me here in South Africa at the above address. You will need to pay more onthe postage, so please ask your Post Office to advise you on this. Thank you very much.

I must ask you please to pray for South Africa and its people. This country is goingthrough a critical period in its history, not unlike the Civil Rights riots in theStates some years ago. We need to come to a spirit of acceptance, understanding andco-operation. But tensions are high, and only the Lord can bring us through this time.

My summary of the Bible especially for Young People, called "STRAIGHT TALK FROM GOD,"has now reached the book of GALATIANS. Different typists are working on the Old andNew Testament, and we are trusting God that we can go into publication in about a year.

At GREENHAVEN on Wednesday evenings I am bringing messages on the Church in the NewTestament. There is a lot of en^usiasm there, and I sometimes get loud comments fromthem during my message.. What a lively bunchll

Last Monday at our OUTREACH BIBLE STUDY I brought a lesson on "OUR CITIZENSHIP IN HEAVENJ?These bodies are only temporary tents in which we now live. We are pilgrims travellinghome. God has prepared new bodies for us. Ih the meantime we are his ambassadors here.

At our weekly meetings in the HAZELDENE area we are studying the book of ACTS, using myBible Summary as a guide. Last week we looked at Paul's farewell message to the eldersin Ephesus. He reminds them that he has worked hard night and day to bring them God'sword, and now commits them into God's hands, knowing that he will never see them again.

At LENTEGEUR on Sunday I spoke on "THE RETURN OF CHRIST." We do not know when the Lordwill come back again, but he already came the first time, and so we know that he isdefinitely coming back. All signs indicate that his return is near, even at the doors. One of these signs is that, at the time of the end, Satan will be let loose for a littlewhile. Knowing that his time is short, he will wreak havoc on the earth. Violence andterrorism all over the world leave us in no doubt that Satan is loose now. This was

graphically portrayed for us at the viscious attack and massacre at a church here inCape Town this past month. God's people, worshipping and singing praises to him, weremowed down in cold blood. My brothers and sisters, please pray for us.

agent. It's Shirley Camp, and we're sure she'll do a greatjob. We're also introducing a new format to our newsletter, and hope you like it.

On my first trip to LANSDOVJNE I brought a message on "GOD'SPLAN OF SALVATION." It was well received, and one of thegroup requested a copy of a reading from my Bible Summary,"STRAIGHT TALK from GOD." This summary is designed for youngpeople, and is based on THE LIVING BIBLE, with introductionsbased on J.S. Baxter's "EXPLORE THE BOOK." After 7 years ofwork I have reached I TIMOTHY. Tyndale Publishers and BrotherBaxter have very kindly given me permission to use theirmaterial. Although we're still working with rough drafts, I'dlike to give you a little glimpse into it. Here then is a pre-publication look at I CORINTHIANS 13;

THE WAY OF LOVE

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I may speak in unknown tongue,I may sing with angel's song.

But I'm just a noisy gong.If I have no love.

Filled with wisdom from on high.Faith to make the mountains fly —None of these can satisfy,

If I have no love.

I may feed and clothe the poor,Give my life for many more,But .1'11 suffer losses sore

If I have no love.

Page 6: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

Love is patient, love is good,Never jealous, proud or rude.Holds no grudges, does not brood —

That's the way of love.

Love rejoices in the right.

Love shines through the darkest night.Love holds on with all its might —

That's the way of love.

Gifts of knowledge fade away.Prophecies grow old and grey.Gifts of tongues will cease one day —

Love will never end.

As a child I little knew.

But through all the years I grew. And when heaven comes into view

I will witness love.

There are three things that endure —^ Faith, and hope, and love so pure —

One is greatest, that's for sure. And that one is love.

At a church meeting in a classroom of the Aloe Road Schoolin LENTEGEUR, I brought a message on the book of EPHESIANS,This wonderful letter from Paul has two parts:

I WHAT GOD HAS DONE.

II WHAT WE MUST DO.

God has blessed us in so many ways. In the past, he sentHis own son to die for our sins. In the present he givesus the strength and guidance of His Holy Spirit. In thefuture he gives us the eternal glory of His own home inheaven. But God also expects certain things from us. Heexpects our commitment, our love and our enduring loyaltyto him. We must also realize that, as Christians, webelong to each other as much as we belong to the Lord. We

Page 7: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

are one body, one family, and so we have an obligation toevery Christian brother, no matter what his race, nationalityor colour may be. If we cannot accept that, then we havenever really accepted Christ. It is this Christian realitythat South Africa has to come to terms with — todayI

How does the changing situation in South Africa affect ourwork? In actual fact it hasn't made any change to cur workat all. Here in the Western Cape things are fairly normal. We have complete freedom in going to all the places where wenormally go, and carry on a full scale of teaching andpreaching. We thank God for- every opportunity we have.

I have just returned from a trip to LENTEGEUR where I broughta message on PHILIPPIANS. This was followed by the Lord'sSupper, and then Brother Chris asked me to pray for eachmember of the congregation individually. This personal contactis a great blessing to all of us. There is so much warmth andlove between the believers here in Cape Town that it is notpossible to be described. It must be experienced. Nor isthis an isolated experience. Missionaries all over the worldhave noticed and commented on it. Even when they return onfurlough they feel a strong desire to go "home" to the field.

In PORTLAND I brought a lesson on GALATIANS. At GREENHAVEMwe've just completed a study of ACTS, while in the Hazeldenearea we are busy with the book of ROMANS. Chapter. 2 looksat the question; Who is the real child of God? The answeris somewhat surprising, for it is not the meticulouslyreligious person, as one would expect. Rather it is anyonewho's heart is right, who is committed to what is right, andwho does what he believes to be right. Such a person will beacknowledged by God, even if he gets no recognition from manl

At the beginning of September we celebrated "PEACE DAY." Manypeople stopped for a minute's silence. Others lined thestreets, holding hands. It was a tremendously emotional dayfor all of us. Martha's son, Bradley, who just received hiscommercial N4 CERTIFICATE, joined a motor-bike PEACE RALLY inCape Town. There is a tremendous amount of good-will in thiscountry that's just waiting to be tapped. The people as awhole are sick and tired of the violence which has beengoing on.

Page 8: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

In closing I'd like to print for you a copy of the partof my Bible Summary requested by a brother in LANSDOWNE:

JOHN 1:1-14 The universe began with God's expression ofhimself — a mighty, explosive outpouring of his power^This expression, this explosive radiation of almightyenergy, occurea in the very presence of God — it was in

fact the visible projection of God's own invisible nature.Tnis mighty expression of God's power was right there

with God at the very beginning of Creation, and out ofthat powerful expression everything in all Creation came

into existence, in fact without it there would have been

no Creation at all.

Deep within that powerful expression of God was theseed and source of all life — the life that was to become

the light of all mankind. The light streams out into the

darkness, and the darkness has never been able to hold it

back.o...

A man came from God. His name was John, He came to

point people to the light, so that through him everyone

might believe. John himself was not the light. He was

only a_ herald to announce the coming of the light. The expression of God is the real light which gives

life to all mankind. This light was coming down to the

world in which we live. He came into a world that owed

its very existence to him, but the world did not recognizehim. He came to his own, yet his own refused to accept

him; but to tnose who did accept him he gave the right tobecome the children of God — those who trusted him, and

committed their lives into his hands.

Bo it was that the mighty expression of the AlmightyGod became a human being and lived among us, and we saw

his glory — the glory of the only son of the Father, full of love and truth.

I want to thank each of you who are supporting us inthis Ministry to Cape Town, and ask you please to continueto pray for us and help us as the Lord leads.

This past month I have been studying the book ofCOLOSSIANS with the brethren at the Aloe Road School in

LENTEGEUR. We discovered that as God's children we need to:-

I BELIEVE IN CHRIST

II BECOME NEW CREATURES

III BEHAVE LIKE GOD'S CHILDREN

At PORTLAND in MITCHELL'S PLAIN sprawling townshipwith a population of well over a million people) wo are

studying the book of 1 CORINTHIANS. This book deals withdeep-seated problems in the church, and helps to solve them.Brother Peter, who leads a Non-Instrumental church in MITCHELL'SPLAIN, is attending our studies and has been very helpful.

SOUTH AFRICA is now on the way to a new non-racial anddemocratic constitution. There are difficulties along theway, but we trust and pray that God will guide us to a new era.

Page 10: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

Last month at GREENHAVEN I brought a message, usingmy Bible Summary, from ROMANS 1-8; where we learnedthat God has done something for us that we never could dofor ourselves — He has made a way for us to come backinto fellowship with him by the death of his own son.

In the HAZELDENE area we looked at ROMANS 9, andsaw how God began putting his plan into effect way backin the Old Testament era. To say that God hardened theheart of Pharoah is the same as saying that the sunhardens clay, while the same sun will melt wax. There isno difference in the sun, but there is a difference in thesubstances on which it acts.

As we approach Christmas and the New Year Martha and

I want to take this opportunity to thank you again foryour loyal support throught the past year, and to wishyou and yours a blessed Christmas and God's guidance inthe coming year.

In order to give you souie idea 6£ the lessons we arebringing to the people of Cape Town, I'd like to print aselection on ROMANS from my Bible Summary

3.9 Are we any better than other people, just because wehave the Bible and they don't? Not at all. We're allsinners — every single one of us. Whether we belong toGod's people, or whether we're savages out in the bush —we've all gone off the tracks somewhere along the line.No one in all the world has kept on doing what's right —not one.

3.19 So God's judgement lies heavily on all of his people, because they have the responsibility to do what he says, and yet they go around doing all kinds of wicked things.Nobody has any excuse1 The whole world is guilty in God'ssightl Do you see what I'm saying? There's no one in allthe world who'll ever get right with God by obeying hisword. The more we read the Bible, the more we realize howbad we are!

3.21 Now this is where the Good News comes in. God himself

Page 11: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

- 3 -

has made a way for us to get right with him! When we commitour lives to Jesus Christ — when we put our trust in himand his goodness — then God makes this promise to us:-

HE WILL TAKE OUR SINS AWAY!

HE WILL DECLARE US "NOT GUILTY,"AND HE WILL BRING US INTO A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH HIMSELF'

It doesn't matter who we are»

It doesn't matter what we've done.

We can all come to God in this way«

3.23 Yes, it's true that all of us have sinned and comeshort of God's standards, but the good news is that God isprepared to accept us anyway, as long as we coimnit ourselvesto Jesus Christ.

That's how gracious God is!That's how he sets us free!

3.25 How did all this come cibout? Let me explainGod sent his son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment

for our sins, bringing his anger against us to an end. Heused the sacrificial death of Christ to take our sins away, and he used our commitment to Christ to bring us back into aright relationship with himself.

3.26 Now is God acting correctly in all of this? Mostdefinitely. First, he held back on punishing the people ofOld Testament times, because he knew that he was going tosend Jesus to pay for their sins. Today he accepts sinnerson the basis of their commitment to the Lord Jesus. By doingthis, God accomplishes two things

1. He stays in harmony with his own righteous nature.2. He brings us into harmony with his righteous nature.

You see, sin has got to be punished — but Jesus took our

punishment on himself. His death on the cross paid the pricefor our sins, and brought us into fellowship with God.

3.27 Now what have you and I done to earn our way into

heaven? Nothing. Nothing at all- Our salvation isn't based

Page 12: Fulford Carroll 1993 SAfrica

- 4 -

on anything we've done. It's based squarely on whatJesus did for us< So the only way we can be saved is

by committing ourselves totally and completely to Christ.

3,29 Is this salvation only for God's chosen people, theJews? No, it's for all people. Anyone in the whole worldcan come to God like this^

3.,31 Well then, if we're saved by our commitment to Christ, does this mean that we don't have to worry about obeyeingGod's commands any more? Exactly the oppositel It's onlywhen we're truly committed to Christ that we can reallybegin to serve God properly,

4,1 Let's take a look at Abraham, the father of our nation. What were his experiences in regard to faith and commitmentto God? The Scriptures tell us that Abraham trusted God, andGod took away his sins and called him righteous. Did Abrahamearn a place in heaven by the good things he did? No, Hissalvation was a gift from the God in whom he trusted,,--

4.23 Now the same thing v/ill happen to you and me when weput our trust in the God who raised our Lord Jesus from the

dead, Jesus died so that our sins could be forgiven, and herose back to life again so that we could be made right withGod.

5,1 Now, since we've been made right with God, our livesare being blended into harmony with the life of our Creatorthrough our Lord Jesus Christ. What's more, we're gettingexcited about going home to live with him one day, and sharein all of God's glory,

oooOOOooo

We pray God's richest blessings on all of you., Wevyolcome Shirley Camp as our new L-'orwarding Agent, and weexpress our deepest thanks to all of you for your prayersand support during the past year. May we take thisopportunity to wish you and yours a blessed Christmas, andpray God's guidance for you through the coming year.
