Mobility Grant: The Skys the Limit

Yesterday, the Metro Board awarded the City of Los Angeles, in partnershipwith Long Beach, a grant of $8,350,000 to develop three integrated mobilityhubs: one in Downtown Los Angeles, one in Hollywood, and one in LongBeach. The mobility hubs will provide a suite of mobility options including, but not limited to bike sharing, car sharing, folding-bikes, and secure bicycleparking. Matching funds are being provided by six private investors in theamount of $4,950,000, including Avis who will provide and operate any carsharing program and Long Beachs own Bikestation/MOBIS who will provideany secure bike parking. No City funds are required as local match. OurPublic Works Department will manage the implementation in LongBeach..The project stems from Metro's interest in funding the first and lastmile of transit trips, which Long Beach definitely is, being a beach City at thebeginning/end of two freeways and the Blue Line. MTA is supporting theimplementation of this project, since all three of the hubs are located around

Metro stations. This is a fairly new and exciting concept for all of us - a bigwin!

    Gridlock: A Good Problem?

We had a report from our Public Works Department this week that theyhave so many street projects out to bid throughout our 50 square miles rightnow that they actually have to pay attention to gridlock. A lot of planning isgoing into where and when projects start and finish so we do not impact anyone neighborhood too much as we repair our aging infrastructure. This trulyis a wonderful problem to have given our inability to improve our failing

    infrastructure over the past decade.

    Rancho Los Cerritos: Restoration

Attached are some pictures of the progress at Rancho Los Cerritos for theirVisitor Center and Arroyo Restoration. This is incredible. We are soblessed to have a private foundation raising dollars for these wonderfulcapitol improvements at our historic sites. If you have not visited eitherRancho Los Alamitos or Rancho Los Cerritos recently, you certainly should.Great things are happening at both locations.

    Eastside Entry Signs

We have had some very dilapidated entry signs to our City, primarily in thenortheast part. We recently replaced some of them utilizing unique funding

sources. Entry signs into our community are extremely important given weshare our boundaries with eight cities. You only get one chance to make afirst impression!..By the way, we are working to see if one or more of theaquatic groups might want to sponsor an entry sign in our beach areaswhich would highlight the motto adopted by the Council last year, AquaticCapital of America.

    10,000 Small Businesses

This is an initiative of Long Beach City College (LBCC) supporting theireconomic development mission. You may recall that we assisted LBCC

secure a designation as a host for a Small Business Development CenterProgram (SBDC) for the three county area of Los Angeles, Ventura, andSanta Barbara. LBCC will serve as the focal point for the Goldman SacsInitiative in the Long Beach area. The Valley Economic DevelopmentCenter will serve as the focal point in Los Angeles City. We have notifiedboth our Long Beach SBE vendors and all other SBEs separatelythroughout BID system of this wonderful program. We are hoping to get asmany as possible to apply by the July 6 deadline.

Long Beach Airport: Another Great Win!

Attached is a list of 101 airports throughout the country ranked onaffordability on www.cheapflights.com. We are the third mostinexpensive airport in the entire United States and number one inCalifornia. We have put this on our social media pages. GreatNews!

    101 Airports Ranked on Affordability

Ever wonder how your hometown ranks on affordability? One thing to consider when bookingyour flight this summer is the convenience of alternative airports. Sometimes, choosing alesser-known departure can help save on airfare. For instance, departing from Bob HopeAirport in California can save you more than if you head out from Los Angeles International.

Weve crunched the numbers and found the cheapest (and priciest) airports to fly out of allover the country, so if yours is on the expensive side, check out neighboring alternatives tocut your travel costs and instead spend on the fun.

For the best summer travel savings, being flexible and taking the path less traveled (literally!)is key.
