Kia ora te whanauNau mai hoki mai ki te kura nei

Greetings everyone and welcome back to a new school year in a new decade! It was lovely to have so many of you join our mihi whakatau (welcome) in the hall this morning and to have the chance to chat before school and on road patrol after school.

I also would like to thank you all for your attendance at our start-up meetings for 2020. I was delighted to see many children with both parents attending to help them get connected and settled into the new year. This transition is vital in order to re-establish the children’s sense of belonging and finding their place in the world of school again. We appreciate this is an extra time commitment for you and requires reorganisation of your schedules but this time is extremely valuable in getting children firmly established for the year and for you to have a strong sense of what your child is engaging with and who are their important connections. These meetings have resulted in much less anxiety for children today as they begin their first full day at school.

The 20’sI was reading somewhere this week about a pending 100th anniversary and was captured by the fact that this anniversary was celebrating something that started in the 1920s. I have always thought of the 1920s in some ways as the beginning of the modern era - the roaring ’20s began particularly in the USA with a surge of capitalism, a breath of fresh air and freedom after WW1, the age of Jazz, introduction of mass media, the model T ford, gangsters, flappers, Walt Disney, Babe Ruth, Lindenbergh and Amelia Earhart. It is described in history as a decade of change which started with a ROAR. 100 years later what might our Roar for this new decade be?

Our learning in 2020 is all about changemakers and today we have had the chance to work with some young people from across Christchurch who have found ways of doing things differently across our city. We are interested in what inspires them and what impact they have had or hope to have and how we might use their experiences to make change in our learning, our lives and our world. Some of our inspiration has come from Grizzly Bakery, The Bacon Brothers, Lucy Gray - student leader of the strike for climate change, Volunteer Student Army representatives and Georgina Stokes a young designer from Massey Design School.

KindoYou may have seen some Facebook posts about a new system we are implementing called Kindo. This is a cashless payment system designed especially for schools and going forward this will be where we will be putting all school related costs and will be our preferred option for receiving payments.

Our PTA will also be using Kindo meaning you'll be able to visit either the Kindo app or website to easily manage all your school payments via one simple to use platform. You can top up your Kindo account via bank transfer or credit card and we are confident you are going to appreciate the convenience that the system offers. Here's a sneak peek of the Kindo system :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKHoBgWA_-U&feature=youtu.be

Please keep an eye on Facebook as we will post once we are live with Kindo and provide full instructions on how to register and set up your account.

If you currently have an automatic payment set up please cancel this, you will still be able to make your regular payments but to a different bank account and we will advise you of the new bank details in due course. If you have any questions please email these through to [email protected] or pop in and have a chat with Camille or Bhumi.

PTA information eveningOur very active PTA are preparing to welcome you to the school and to find out abut how you can support your children through fundraising and community support endeavours over the coming year. See the invitation later in this newsletter and please take time to join them for a drink on Thursday 13th February - we cannot function without your support in this key role.

Although I have lots more I have been thinking about over the break that I would like to share with you, I have tried to keep messages today quite simple. Look out for much more detail next Friday and enjoy your summer weekend as we lead into our first full week at school next week.

We are always available for a catch-up or comment either by email or face to face.

See you all soon.
