Reflection

Using SketchUp for the first time was both terrifying and provocative. I had no idea the amount of possibilities that could be created with such a

program. I was genuinely impressed. The first couple weeks of using it were pretty easy, I thought I was a natural. However as the weeks went on the exercise models became more advanced and soon I was finding myself

overwhelmed. Overwhelmed, not by the amount of steps it took to accomplish something, but overwhelmed by the tiny details that can

completely alter the outcome as well as cause to be very time consuming when trying to fix it. Overall I really enjoyed this half of the semester and

learning how to use SketchUp and look forward to future courses with SketchUp as well as other necessary programs used for my degree courses.

Dog House

This being my first time using SketchUp, I felt the dog house was the perfect introduction for the program. During this week, we as a class learned the basics of SketchUp, we learned how to make a rectangle which was the base for the doghouse. Then how to raise said rectangle using the push/pull tool, which created the home for the canine to live in. Third we learned how to create the pointed roof using one triangle then duplicating it and flipping it.

Spiral Staircase While the whole process seemed daunting and

relentless, once repetition was all it took to finish the staircase, it became fun and relaxing. Overall, as

frustrating as it is to learn new things, I find comfort in knowing that I am widening my knowledge and experience with a program that I most likely will

continue to use in my future at school as well as my future career.

Malevich

Objective: Create a 3D structure from Malevich’s 2D painting

Reflection: As a class we chose the upper left hand portion to make the model from. I enjoyed this exercise because it was one of the few that the students were allowed to fully develop on their own. Almost every SketchUp that we have done for this class has only allowed for personal touches. However, to create this 3D model, it would solely depend on the creator’s imagination.

3D Paper Plane

Doing the folding planes was relatively easy. I found the rotating to occasionally be tricky just because I could not get the rotator circle to be fixed along the right axis. Overall I enjoyed turning a silly childhood toy made from paper into a 3D model for my college course.

Gothic Arches

Reflection: I did not enjoy this one at all. As seen in picture 1, to start I could not get my arches to be symmetrical and without photo documentation, I also could not intersect the two models accordingly nor could I properly delete the faces that I found unnecessary. I became so frustrated that I gave up entirely and online-shopped instead, sorry Jerry. I finally completed this exercise model while putting together my portfolio at the end of the semester, fortunately with ease and a little more knowledge of SketchUp.

Photo Match

Objective: Use photo match process to create 3D digital models of Tadao Ando’s photograph

Reflection: I very much enjoyed this exercise. I am not entirely certain why however, but I found it almost meditative. Along the way there were a few sections that I found to be a bit difficult. Like the back corner, I did the entrance ways and the roofing of those entrances, but it was not possible to make them from picture view, I had to rotate the building and try to match it up to what the picture would show.

Final Project

Doing the final was my greatest fail. With no one to blame but myself, I did not attend the first day we started this project, and when I came to class Wednesday morning, I had definitely missed a lot. As I looked around the classroom I noticed that everyone’s finals were pretty far along. I spent that Wednesday coming up with what you see to the right, and that is as far as I got. This project was difficult for me, I would try to work on it more, but with no luck, nothing worked as I had planned. Unfortunately I am turning in this poor excuse of a project, but hope to work on it over summer as my own self-given exercise.

I very much enjoyed this half of the semester. I am happy I took this class. I feel this is one of the few college classes I have taken that I was not afraid to make mistakes in, that I

was not embarrassed to ask questions, and that I thoroughly enjoyed due to my teacher and my want to expand my

knowledge as well as my skills. Thank you Jerry.
