Evaluation - audience

Bethan Glover

What is the demographics of your target audience?

• Age: Teenagers

• Gender: female

• Social class: D and E

• Ethnicity: White British and American

The reason I came to these decisions was due to my inspirations being We love pop and Billboard magazine and female teenagers evidentially being their target audience because of the contents they include within their magazines and the colour scheme they use. Especially We love pop as they use a pink colour scheme throughout the majority of their magazine editions.

How did the genre of your music magazine attract your target audience?

• The music genre pop, attracts my target audience due to they are young, female adolescents and pop artists cover topics within their songs such as relationships which is what a lot of typical young teenagers are experiencing.

• Furthermore, the types of artists that the pop genre use can be seen as role models for the target audience which makes the audience want to find out more about them and aspire to be like them.

• The target audience expect upbeat, feel good songs from the pop artists or the other extreme of pop ballads where artists sing about their feelings and emotions normally based around the topic of relationships. A good example for this is Taylor Swift, she has a variety of songs with very different meanings, she has feel good songs, songs about getting over somebody who you once were dating, songs about relationships and being in love. Therefore, she suits any emotions that the target audience may be feeling so they feel as though they can connect with her no matter what state of mind they are in.

What images did you take, use and then edit to attract your target audience?

• I decided to have some close camera shots to capture the facial expressions of my model due to the audience will feel more connected with her and her story when they are up close and personal and will feel as though she is telling the story herself for my double page spread. Before deciding on what angles I wanted my shots for my double page spread I looked at other pop magazines like billboard and they also presented their artist up close on the double page spread, and I, myself as a reader felt more engaged with the story when I could see clear facial expressions from the artist.

• Furthermore, I also decided to do some full body shots so that the audience could clearly see the costumes that the model was wearing due to her wearing mainstream costumes I wanted the audience to be able to see this, therefore, they could feel more connected with the artist and her story if they feel they have more similarities with her.

• Within my images my model wore mainstream clothing trends to attract the teenager population of this era for the genre of pop. Which involved colourful clothing alongside a black piece of clothing due to the fact black clothes are seen as popular amongst teenagers of this generation.

• Furthermore, as my main storyline is “Taylor: nobody can break me” I portrayed my model with her arms crossed over her head in a way of showing that she will not let anybody in to hurt her. Therefore, this will help attract my target audience due to they are teenagers and probably going through the same sorts of problems such as bullies and relationships problems, so if they see that a famous artist also has these problems and is able to defeat they can too.

An image that I edited…

• I edited the lips of my model to a darker shade of red due to the mainstream colours for teenagers to be wearing for lipstick now is red.

• Also, I feel as though the colour red symbolises how the artist is fierce due to her story being “nobody can break me”.

• Furthermore, by making her lips darker red and her clothing being black her lips draw the attention of the audience.

How did your choice of models conform/subvert stereotypes of the music genre that you chose?

• My model conformed stereotypes of pop within my magazine due to she can be seen as a role model within the magazine like how for example, Katy Perry is seen as a role model on billboards magazine.

• Furthermore, the outfits my model wears within all the images I had taken off her are mainstream fashions which teenagers who are interested in the pop genre are likely to wear they will therefore, be able to connect with the artist and her story more efficiently when similarities are evident between the artist and reader.

How does your cover lines and main double page spread story attract your audience?

• Due to my main double page spread story about an artist who got bullied at school and recently got out of a relationship they really hurt and affected her, this attracts my target audience due to a lot of young teenage girls go through relationship problems and jealousy with other girls, falling out with friends and some even experience getting bullied. Therefore, with one of their favourite artists stating that they have gone through the same thing will engage the target audience and make them want to read it as they may find some of things said useful to them and their life problems.

What kind of marketing campaigns do you think would attract your target audience when your magazine is

released?

• Due to my target audience being teenagers, they stereotypically spend the majority of their time on social media websites such as twitter and facebook. Therefore, the best marketing campaigns to attract my target audience would be on the internet and also on the TV due to they also enjoy watching TV as much as socialising on the internet.
