From the ES Administrationrom the ES AdministrationDear Elementary School Parents,

    Open House

This week saw the Elementary School host its open houseevents for 2011/12, where we welcomed our parentbody onto campus to learn some more about the pro-grams we are offering for your children at ISM. Beforethe individual class presentations, we were able to discussa little about how schools are changing and what these

changes actually look like in our classrooms. Our presen-tation centered around six big ideas at ISM:

    Big idea #1

The student-centered classroom. Essentially, this involves aphilosophical stance by our teachers where we see thestudents input, in an interactive learning environment, ascritical. The teachers role is to frame the learning, and toensure that all students have access to the academic stan-dards. Teachers guide the direction of classroom learningwhile ensuring that students questions are profferedthroughout the journey. Student context, prior learning, experiences and motivations will all feed into a student-

    centered classroom.

    Big idea #2

Concepts versus content. With the era of instant access tomost information via the internet, we place value on chil-dren building conceptual understandings as opposed tosolely acquiring facts. Factual information can be memo-rized, skills can be practiced and knowledge can begained. All are very important in our students learningexperiences at school. However, uncovering big ideas and not only covering content is one of the goals for ourstudents.

Big idea #3Teaching for understanding. True understanding occurswhen students can construct meaning for themselves. Weknow when a student understands a big idea when shecan use it in a different context, apply it to a new situa-tion, interpret it, explain it, and imagine it from someoneelses perspective.

    Big idea #4

The home /school partnership. All research indicates that(Continued on page 2)

    UPDATING PARENT CONTACTINFORMATION

In order to best serve the ISM Parent Community, it is es-sential that information be quickly disseminated when nec-essary. For this reason, the accuracy of your contact detailsin our database is of the utmost importance. Please note

that Parent Contact Information must be updated online bythe parent.

To make any changes or verification in contact informa-tion, please access one of your childrens data file via theISM website (www.ismanila.org ) and then under Login, click on Powerschool Public Access and enter yourUsername and Password. On the page that opens, clickon the Demographic Update icon for changing or updat-ing demographic information.

the stronger the three way relationship between the student, the teacher(s) and home, the greater benefits there are forlearning. We need to do whatever we can to avoid a disconnect between the world of school and your childs home.

Big idea #5Technology as learning tool. Our aim is twofold. a) To empower our students with a skill set to be able to use the avail-able technology safely, now and into the future. b) Technology needs to be embedded into the learning process such thatstudents know how and for what purpose they are using it.

    Big idea #6

A coaching model of teaching. We now know that providing our students with continual feedback on their learning helps toimprove their learning. At ISM it is an on-going dialogue between student and teacher, where self-reflection and analysisalso plays a critical role. Less teacher talk + more feedback = better results for students.

These big ideas are what we know as more and more research has been devoted to looking at how learning actuallyhappens in a school environment. If you would like to discuss any of the above big ideas with us in more detail, please donot hesitate to come and speak with us.

    PTA

This week we have seen a new addition to our Elementary School playground, courtesy of our hardworking PTA. We nowhave a new climbing wall next to our swing area, which has already been very popular with our students. A big thankyou, on behalf of all our students, to the PTA, who work so tirelessly and selflessly in order to make ISM a better place forthem.

From the School Clinicrom the School ClinicHand washingThis month we have welcomed everyone back with a focus on hand washing. Regular hand wash

ing is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection. We are reminding

children to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after eating, after

using the toilet, after sneezing, coughing and wiping noses and after playing outside. Please re

mind your children to do this at home as well to help them learn this healthy habit for life.

Head liceWe are on the look out to keep head lice out of the school. We are asking families to check your childrens

hair over the long weekend for lice and nits. Head lice are tiny wingless insects that feed by sucking blood

from the scalp. The females lay 56 eggs a day and use a sticky adhesive to glue the eggs to the hair shaft

close to the scalp. The eggs are called nits. The signs and symptoms are

    Unrelenting scalp itch

    Persistent headscratching

Scratch marks or a rash on the neck, crown of the head or behind the ears

There are a number of shampoo treatments available at pharmacies and you need a very finetoothed lice

comb to remove the lice from the hair. As eggs hatch every few days, you must repeat the combing andchecking every 23 days for up to 10 days. Use conditioner in the hair to make the combing easier.

Immunization ProgramThis year we will be offering vaccination for Hep A, Hep B, Typhoid and Flu within the clinic. This program is provided

through GlaxoSmithKline. The first vaccines on offer are Hepatitis A and B on Wednesday September 28th.

    Hepatitis A (Adult) PHP 2358.00

    Hepatitis A (Junior) PHP 1230.00

    Hepatitis B (Adult) PHP 666.00

    Hepatitis B (Junior) PHP 390.00

Hepatitis A and B combined vaccine (Adult) PHP 2204.00

Hepatitis A and B combined vaccine (Junior) PHP 1102.00

(Prices are per individual vaccine in a course of either 2 or 3 vaccinations)

If you would like more information or you wish to sign up to receive any of the above vaccines, please call in at the clinic to

    What do Girl Scouts do?

The answer is almost anything a girl would like to do!

Most girls join a local troop or group for fun and friendship, but they also find out about

building character and self-esteem and serving their communities - the core qualities ofGirl Scouting. In Girl Scouts, girls find a safe place to grow and share new experiences,

learn to relate to others, develop values and contribute to society.

USA Girl Scouts Overseas ManilaUSA Girl Scouts Overseas Manila (USAGSO) is an overseas branch of Girl Scouts of the USA. We are open togirls of all nationalities, from 5 to 17 years old, who attend an international school in Manila.

Girls can join Girl Scouts at different agelevels:

Daisy Girl Scouts (Grade K-1)This is an introduction to Girl Scouts. Girl Scout Daisies meet in groups of 5 to 10 with two or more adult lead-ers in a nurturing, inclusive environment. They go on trips, learn about nature and science, and explore the artsand their communities. Girl Scout Daisies can also earn Learning Petals and receive participation patches

Brownie Girl Scouts (Grade 2-3)Girl Scouts Brownies work together in groups, earn Girl Scout Brownie Try-its, and explore their community.Friendship, fun, and age-appropriate activities begin at the Girl Scout Brownie meeting and move out to thecommunity and wider world.

Junior Girl Scouts (Grade 4-5)Girl Scout Juniors earn badges and discover what girl power is all about through new activities and by learningto take charge of their own plans. They gain self-confidence as they explore the world in partnership with theirtroop/group leaders.

Cadette, Senior and Ambassador (Grade 6-12)

Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors participate in Girl Scouting in many ways. Under the guidanceof a trained adult advisor, girls mix and match activities and resources to suit their needs while giving back totheir communities. They connect with each other and build self-esteem and confidence in their skills as theywork on a range of projects and gain life experiences.
