Fact Sheet Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world.

We have more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide.

Lions are everywhere. We're men and women active in more than 200 countries and geographic areas.

Lions serve. Our motto is “We Serve.” Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also feed the hungry, aid seniors and the disabled, and

care for the environment. Lions are a global service network of volunteers that make a difference in their local communities.

Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward

the goal of providing vision for all. Through programs such as Sight First, Lions have helped provide more than 147 million treatments for

river blindness, 10 million doses of a sight-saving drug to prevent trachoma, and eye screenings for more than 15 million children.

Lions serve youth. Our community projects often support children and local schools through scholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many

programs to empower youth, including the Peace Poster Contest; youth camps and exchanges; and Lions Quest, a positive youth development program. Our Leo

clubs help young people develop leadership skills while impacting their communities through

service. There are approximately 157,000 Leos and 6,000 Leo clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas worldwide.

Lions receive grants and the world receives benefits. Since 1968, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded more than $811 million in grants to

support Lions’ humanitarian projects. As the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International, LCIF helps

Lions improve the lives of millions of people through four pillars of service: saving sight, supporting youth, providing disaster relief and meeting humanitarian

needs. Through the Foundation’s generous support of large-scale humanitarian initiatives, Lions are able to extend their reach from local

communities to the global community in order to serve those who need us most.

Vision Statement

To be the global leader in community and humanitarian service

Milestones Beginning in 1917

Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, asked a

simple and world-changing question – what if people put their

talents to work improving their communities? Almost 100

years later, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization, with 1.35 million members in more

than 46,000 clubs and countless stories of Lions acting on

the same simple idea: let's improve our communities.

1920: Going International Just three years after our founding, Lions became international

when we established the first club in Canada. Mexico followed in

1927. In the 1950s and 1960s international growth accelerated,

with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa.

1925: Eradicating Blindness Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar

Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in

the crusade against darkness." Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid

the blind and visually impaired.

1945: Uniting Nations The ideal of an international organization is exemplified by our enduring

relationship with the United Nations. We were one of the first

nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United

Nations Charter and have supported the work of the UN ever since.

1957: Organizing Youth Programs In the late 1950s, we created the Leo Program to provide

the youth of the world with an opportunity for personal

development through volunteering.

1968: Establishing Our Foundation Lions Clubs International Foundation assists Lions with

global and large-scale local humanitarian projects.

Through our Foundation,

Today: Extending Our Reach Lions Clubs International extends our

mission of service every day – in local

communities, in all corners of the globe. The

needs are great and our services broad,

including sight, health, youth, elderly, the

environment and disaster relief. Our

international network has grown to include

more than 207 countries and geographic

areas.

1990: Launching SightFirst Through SightFirst, Lions are restoring sight and

preventing blindness on a global scale. Launched in 1990,

Lions have raised more than $346 million for this initiative.

picnics and get-togethers.

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL AND GAVI ALLIANCE PARTNER TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM MEASLES Lions to raise $30 million for immunization, matched by $30 million from UK Government and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

HAMBURG, Germany, 8 July 2013 – The GAVI Alliance and Lions Clubs International today announced a unique partnership designed to

protect tens of millions of children in the world’s poorest countries against measles, a highly infectious disease that kills an estimated

430 people every day, mostly in developing countries.

Under the partnership, Lions Clubs will deploy its network of 1.35 million volunteers to raise $ 30 million and to improve ac cess to

vaccines through the GAVI Alliance, a partnership whose mission is to save children’s lives.

“Lions Clubs International and its members are excited to continue our commitment to the fight against measles and rubella,” said Lions

Clubs International Foundation Chair Wing-Kun Tam. “Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will increase access to

quality immunization services at every level – globally, nationally and locally – to benefit children in developing countries.”

Lions Clubs and GAVI will work with ministries of health in developing countries to ensure children are vaccinated against me asles and

rubella. Lions will also play a key role in social mobilization efforts by working work with local leaders, coordinating comm unity-level

publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centers. Measles kills about 160,000 people annually, mostly children unde r age five.

GAVI provides the measles vaccine in a single shot with the vaccine against rubella (German measles).

Lions Clubs has committed to raising $ 30 million for GAVI immunization programs by 2017, when Lions Clubs celebrates its 100 th

anniversary. Under the GAVI Matching Fund, the UK and Gates Foundation match contributions to GAVI from corporations, foundat ions,

their members, customers, employees and business partners with a goal of raising $ 260 million for immunization through 2015.

Giving the measles vaccine to children is one of the simplest things we can do to protect them from the disease and its dread ful

consequences,” said Justine Greening, the UK’s Secretary of State for International Development.

Measles is a highly infectious and deadly disease, killing an estimated 430 people daily, according to the World Health Organ ization

(WHO), by weakening the immune system, making young children vulnerable to pneumonia, blindness, diarrhea and encephalitis. But

measles can be prevented with a safe and inexpensive vaccine. “These additional resources will help countries reach the 20 m illion

children who have yet to receive measles vaccine, and will provide further momentum to bring us closer to eliminating measles ,” said Dr.

Stephen Cochi, a senior advisor on immunization at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on behalf of the Measle s &

Rubella Initiative.

Lions Club International - Through the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative, Lions and LCIF have helped vaccinate 20 mil lion

children against measles alongside its partners since 2010.

UR Faith

"Have faith in God's plan Once there was a sweeper in a well known temple and he was very

sincere and devoted. Every time he saw thousands of devotees coming

to take Darshan of the Lord, he thought that the Lord is standing all the

time and giving Darshan and He must be feeling... very tired. So one

day very innocently he asked the Lord whether he can take the place of

the Lord for a day so that the Lord can have some relief and rest. The

Deity of Temple replied, "I do not mind taking a break. I will transform

you like Myself, but you must do one thing. you must just stand here

like Me, smile at everyone and just give benedictions. Do not interfere

with anything and do not say anything. Remember you are the deity

and you just have faith that I have a master plan for everything. The

sweeper agreed to this.

The next day the sweeper took the position of the deity and a rich man

came and prayed to the Lord. He offered a nice donation and prayed

that his business should be prosperous. While going, the rich man

inadvertently left his wallet full of money right there. Now the sweeper

in the form of deity could not call him and so he decided to control

himself and keep quiet. Just then a poor man came and he put one

coin in the Hundi and said that it was all he could afford and he prayed

to the Lord that he should continue to be engaged in the Lord's service.

He also said that his family was in dire need of some basic needs but

he left it to the good hands of the Lord to give some solution. When he

opened his eyes, he saw the wallet left by the rich man. The poor man

thanked the Lord for His kindness and took the wallet very innocently.

The sweeper in the form of the Deity could not say anything and he had

to just keep smiling. At that point a sailor walked in. He prayed for his

safe journey as he was going on a long trip. Just then the rich man

came with the police and said that somebody has stolen his wallet

and seeing the sailor there, he asked the police to arrest him thinking that

he might have taken it. Now the sweeper in the form of Deity wanted to say

that the sailor is not the thief but he could not say so and he became greatly

frustrated. The sailor looked at the Lord and asked why he, an innocent

person, is being punished. The rich man looked at the Lord and thanked

Him for finding the thief. The sweeper in the deity form could no more

tolerate and he thought that even if the real Lord had been here, he would

have definitely interfered and hence he started speaking and said that the

sailor is not the thief but it was the poor man who took away the wallet. The

rich man was very thankful as also the sailor.

In the night, the real Lord came and He asked the sweeper how the day

was. The sweeper said, "I thought it would be easy, but now I know that

Your days are not easy, but I did one good thing." Then he explained the

whole episode to the Lord. The Lord became very upset on hearing this

whereas the sweeper thought the Lord would appreciate him for the good

deed done. The Lord asked, "Why did you not just stick to the plan? You

had no faith in Me. Do you think that I do not understand the hearts of all

those who come here? All the donation which the rich man gave was all

stolen money and it is only a fraction of what he really has and he wants Me

to reciprocate unlimitedly. The single coin offered by the poor man was the

last coin he was having and he gave it to Me out of faith. The sailor might

not have done anything wrong, but if the sailor were to go in the ship that

night he was about to die because of bad weather and instead if he is

arrested he would be in the jail and he would have been saved form a

greater calamity. The wallet should go to the poor man because he will use

it in My service. I was going to reduce the rich man's karma also by doing

this and save the sailor also. But you cancelled everything because you

thought you know My plan and you made your own plans." Moral: God has

plans and justice for everyone.... We just have to have patience!!!!!”
