Equality and Diversity Seminar 

Leicester Unite Office February 18th 2013 

 

The seminar was opened and led by the East Midlands representative for women Maureen 

Scott‐ Douglas who then described the programme for the day. 

All Unite members who were present then formally introduced themselves and explained 

their roles within their organisations, some companies sent one delegate others more. 

Equality and progression was discussed and especially how it affected ethnic minorities. 

Each delegate was also handed an thick envelope of various documents produced by the 

union to cover various topics including guidelines for equalities reps and what they should 

be doing and how to engage with those individuals who are more likely to be discriminated  

by employers or others within the organisation they work for. 

Issues such as women’s rights and Health and safety in general were raised. 

Will circulate these documents in due course but will abstract information that we need to 

look after our members within the branch. 

Presentation of one delegates roles in this area occurred and was interesting to know how 

they are handled in private sector. 

There was also an update from a representative of Thompsons Solicitors on the updates to 

the 2010 Equality Act. This is now 2 years old and the Government is struggling with 

implementation of some parts of it (see website for further details).  

Pay issues were also raised and there was a variance between public and private sectors, 

one lucky delegate said they had a 3 % pay rise this year! 

There were always  methods of dealing with pay inequalities, see booklet for details on how 

this can be achieved. 

Siobhan Endean spoke on the topic of “Forward on Equality, no cutting back and the need to 

understand that although we are in a difficult financial state there should be no reason why 

cutbacks on equality issues or pay should occur. Pay and employment for disabled people 

were also discussed and how these inequalities need to be dealt with also took place. 

General feeling was that employers will see what works and what won’t but will not adopt a 

proactive approach in this area and will do the minimum legal amount to satisfy all 

concerned. 

Towards the end of the day we were split into groups to discuss issues raised and to put 

forward some suggestions on how our members can be helped!

6. Mappings of where there are more different ethnic groupings work.
