The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philoso-phy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experience through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a commu-nity that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

ASHLEY NORLEY ‘13Endicott is the perfect fit for me both academically and athletically. Since Endicott is DIII, I love that I am able to play very competitive volleyball, while still being able to balance my academics and par-take in the school’s other amazing extracurricular activities! – Callie Dolan

When I was applying to schools, a big part of my decision was being able to play a sport at the collegiate level. I decided on DIII because it gave me the chance to continue my athletic career without it completely taking over my life. Now that I am here, I see that I have definitely made the right decision because I am able to still have time for my academics, social life, as well as hav-ing some free time. – Ashley Norley

DIII programs allow athletes to become well rounded in areas other than sports. Academic achievements are still attainable as well as jobs and internships. Keeping some type of com-petitive sport in one’s life can be important for more than just athletic reasons. It teaches you teamwork, strategies, problem solving - many attributes that can be used later in life. Endicott offers a great variety of sports to continue that competitive edge. The professors are extremely helpful and always willing to work with you. En-dicott has such a beautiful, ocean-side campus too. – Sierra Kenkel

Page 9: Endicott College Women's Volleyball Guide Fall 2013

The 2013 season sees head coach Tim Byram enter his 14th year at the helm. While the last decade has been an overwhelming

success for the Blue and Green, they head into this season with a fire inside that will look to fuel them due to last season’s struggles. The last time Endicott had a sub-.500 record was 2003-04 in which they went 14-18. The season after that, the Gulls went 29-7 and won their first of four titles in a five year stretch. The team won 23+ matches in all of those five seasons and Coach Byram is hoping that 2013 is the start of another special run.

“I know the team and I are looking forward to getting going this week-end,” stated Byram. “Everyone has worked extremely hard in the

off-season and the results have been visible both on and off the court already. We are really focusing on getting a little better every day and being great teammates.”

With the core of this current roster being so young, the future is extremely bright for the Gulls. The roster consists of one lone senior, two juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen. Endicott returns three 2012 All-CCC members in senior captain Callie Dolan (Second Team OH), sophomore Mackenzie Guerre (CCC Rookie of the Year, First Team MB) and sophomore Alleigh VandeMerkt (Honorable Mention S) as well as sophomore Lexi Watts (starting OPP) and juniors Sierra Kenkel and Jessica Petrucci.

This group is complemented by a talented freshmen class that consists of OH/DS Lilly Benabou (Medway, Mass. / Medway), MB/OPP Jayla Brennen (Litchfield, N.H. / Campbell), MB Hayley Knapp (Valencia,

Calif. / Valencia), Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo), MB Kelli Sugrue (Tewksbury, Mass. / Tewksbury) and DS Erika Trudon (Coventry, Conn. / Coventry).

Both upperclassmen and newcomers will look to team together to improve upon last year’s 12-20 overall record that saw the Gulls go 6-2 in conference play. With that 6-2 conference record, the Gulls locked up the #2 seed (by way of a tie breaker) and eventually were upset by Salve Regina in the semifinals. The 12-20 record is a bit deceiving considering the team faced the preseason nationally ranked #2 Chris-topher Newport as well as Southwestern (TX), U. of Chicago, Elmhurst and UMass Boston, all who were ranked in the national preseason poll. Half of Endicott’s schedule wound up being against regionally ranked opponents as well so Byram is counting on that level of competition to provide guidance and lessons for this year’s returning members.

“I don’t think a team can reach its potential without finding what it’s strengths and weaknesses are and improving on both,” he said when asked about the schedule. “Our schedule has never been about the number of wins we will have at the end of the season but about how prepared we are for the playoffs. The great thing about this group is that we have committed teammates coming in every day striving to improve.”

2013 sees the difficult schedule continue as the Gulls host Keene State, Wellesley, Plymouth State, Williams, Eastern, Bowdoin and Trinity to start off the season. Following the MIT invitational, Endicott stays on the road as they travel to cross-town foe Gordon for their first CCC matchup before traveling to Amherst for a tri-match with Bates and

Amherst. A CCC match at UNE in late September sees the team travel to New York City to take on Baruch, Ramapo and Richard Stockton in to wrap up the first month of play. October is heavy in conference play as the squad hosts defending CCC champs Roger WIlliams on Homecoming Weekend as well as a trip to Salve Regina for a rematch of last year’s CCC semifinal. The UMass Boston Invitational in mid-October breaks up a stretch of CCC play before the Gulls square off against Brandeis and Connecticut College to finish off regular season play. The Gulls know that this grueling schedule will have them battle tested and primed for a long post season run.

Tim Byram

The Endicott women’s volleyball team has been under the guidance of Tim Byram since the start of the millennium. The

program has developed into one of the top teams in both the confer-ence and New England, having made the conference finals six out of the last nine seasons, winning four of them. With an overall record of 252-200 (.558) and a conference record of 96-20 (.828) in the 13 years with Byram at the helm, the team is looking to continue the level of success and return to the NCAA tournament.

One of Byram’s beliefs is to schedule top out of conference teams to challenge his team throughout the season. This year’s schedule consists of 10 teams that finished the season ranked in the top 10, two teams that reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen, and one that finished among the top 25 teams in the AVCA natinoal rankings. The results are easy to see by having been selected for post season play each of the last nine seasons.

“Generally, we will schedule as tough as possible and play the best competition to get ready for post season play,” Coach Byram stated.

Throughout the difficult schedule, travel and practices, academics have remained a top priority in his program. During his tenure, 18 women have been named Academic All-Conference and there have been three that were named the Conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year.

“Dedication in the classroom is a must in my program. The women know that they are here for a quality education and that playing volleyball is second-ary to that. We take pride in our performance both on and off the court.”

Within his philosophy, Byram likes drills and exercises that foster competi-tion. The large majority of his practices and drills focus around game-like situations.

“We will do more drills in a six on six format then small group drill work because it has to be game like. Practicing game situations will only strengthen our chances for success when the situation arises in the middle of a match.”

With such a competitive environment in the gym that challenges the women to push each other to be the best, the individual accolades have surely been received. There have been numerous weekly and individual post season honors earned by the players but the award the team is always striving for is the CCC Championship. Each player knows that they will all be dependent on each other for the team to raise its fifth banner this season.
