In her first season at the helm of the Endicott College women’s la-crosse program, Meghan Fitzgerald made an almost seamless transition as she led the Gulls to their fourth consecutive The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship in 2009. Endicott was 15-6 overall while boasting a perfect 9-0 mark in TCCC games. The Blue and Green have a tall task in front of them as they graduated 11 seniors this past offsea-son and lost three of its top five goal scorers from a year ago.

Fortunately for the Gulls, they return their leading offensive force from 2009 in senior tri-captain Valerie Feldman (Albany, N.Y.). Feldman led the team in goals (58), assists (27) and points (85) in 2009. The senior standout is one of the most decorated players in program history with three All-TCCC selec-tions while also being named a 2008 All-Region First Team member, 2008 ECAC Second Team selection and the 2008 TCCC Offensive Player of the Year.

The other two captains this season will be junior Brittany Kane (Scar-borough, Maine) and senior Ken-dahl Light (South Hero, Vt.). Kane will help anchor the defense as the defender saw action in 19 games last season and scooped up 34 ground-balls with 10 caused turnovers. Kendahl Light will also help out on the defensive side of the field as the senior grabbed five groundballs and had six caused turnovers in limited action a year ago.

Helping out at the attack position will be Kristen Micho (Syracuse, N.Y.), who scored eight goals and had three assists. Caitlin Hughes (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) will also add depth to the position as well as Brooke Neuman (Stamford, Conn.), who tallied a goal and two assists in five games.

Freshman Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) should make an immediate impact on the attack position with her size and speed. She enters the Endicott program with a strong foundation and understand-ing of attack concepts. Another freshman hoping to make an impact will be Caitlin Pratt (Bow, N.H.), a de-ceptive attacker with a very threat-ening shot. Pratt should continue to develop her role on attack and contribute to the success of the unit.

Through the midfield, the Gulls will look to several underclassmen to move the ball from end to end. Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) will be a force offensively as the sophomore was fifth on the team in goals last season, netting 21 goals in 18 games, and will try to replace three seniors who combined for 129 goals a season ago. 2009 All-TCCC Honorable Mention selection Carin Czerniawski (Monroe, Conn.) was also effective last season, posting 18 goals and 11 assists, and will look to improve upon her 2009 campaign.

The Gulls hope that Kellie Cunning-ham (Derry, N.H.) can rebound from an injury-plagued 2009 campaign and return to the success she saw as a freshman in 2008. Cunningham led the team in points her freshman year with 78 points on 47 goals and 31 assists. The midfielder also led the team in groundballs (59) while finishing second on the team in draw controls (42) and caused turnovers (25).

Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Molly Sowles (Cumber-land, Maine) hope to provide stabil-ity in the draw control portion of the game. Loizzo had an impressive rookie campaign as the sophomore had 56 groundballs, 21 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. Sowles grabbed 22 groundballs while scoring eight goals and adding nine assists in

2009. Shannon Belfanti (Ridgefield, Conn.) will also add depth at the position after seeing action in five games last season.

Also at midfield will be freshman Lauren Todd (Newfield, N.H.), who will jump right into a starting role in the defensive end. Fitzgerald says that Todd, “has the defen-sive ability to shutdown the opponent’s top threats on attack and is a smart player who understands working as part of the defensive unit.”

Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) and Meaghann Mellen (Londonderry, N.H.) also hope to improve Endicott’s depth in the midfield, especially Davis who is expected to provide versatility on the draw. Mellen comes from Londonderry High School which promotes an excellent lacrosse program and helped the freshman develop a strong foundation in her basic skills that will allow her to help out in the midfield. Leia Cadotte (Norwalk, Conn.) will also look to bring depth to the position while Tara Hellemann (Madison, Conn.) will miss the 2010 season due to injury but hopes to return to the Endicott midfield next season.

Defensively, the Gulls will look for senior Lauren Carelli (Hollis, N.H.) to provide leadership to the backfield. Carelli grabbed

11 ground balls and had four caused turnovers last season. Deven Tentindo (Stratham, N.H.) also looks to help out defensively after seeing action in three games last season and scooped up two ground balls while causing a pair of turn-overs.

Endicott will also rely on a bevy of rookies to help out defensively includ-ing Gabrielle Boyd (Hingham, Mass.) and Stacia Geno (White River Junction, Vt.). Boyle is a strong defender with good stick skills and confidence with the ball that is also well-conditioned and should contrib-ute minutes and depth to the defensive midfield. Geno is an aggressive and active defender who will add depth to the Gulls’ defense. Meghan Klages (Huntington, N.Y.) hopes to provide options for head coach Meghan Fitzgerald on defense as the freshman is a strong athlete with good size who has continued to improve since the preseason.

The Gulls will carry only one goaltender this season in sophomore Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine). Neff saw action in 10 games last season including three starts and made 54 saves on 122 shots faced for a .466 save percentage. Neff was a perfect 3-0 last season and hopes to continue her success in 2010.

Meghan Fitzgerald - Head CoachHead coach Meghan Fitzgerald enters her second year as head women’s lacrosse coach at Endicott College.

In her first year, she led the Gulls to a 15-5 overall record, a perfect 9-0 in conference play and the program’s fourth-consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. In 2009, seven Gulls earned All-Conference accolades.

Fitzgerald arrived at Endicott from Division II Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass., where she served as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach for four seasons with the Skyhawks. Fitzgerald primarily worked with the de-fensive unit. During her time at Stonehill, the coaching staff held an overall record of 69 wins and 8 losses. In addi-tion, the Skyhawks were undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference and captured the Conference Championship each year. The Skyhawks earned berths to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2007 – winning the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2005. In addition to her coaching duties at Stonehill, she also worked in the Office of Admission as a Senior Admission Counselor.

A 2004 graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., she was a three year starter on the William Smith Lacrosse Team under head coach, Pat Genovese. During her four year playing career, the Herons earned NCAA tournament berths in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Fitzgerald was named to the 2003 NCAA All-Tournament Team for her efforts in the NCAA semifinals. In 2004, she was named to the IWLCA All-New York Region Second Team and the NYSWCAA All-State Second Team. Currently, Fitzgerald serves on the IWLCA All-Pilgrim Region Selection Committee.

Fitzgerald earned a B.A. in Public Policy from William Smith College in 2004. She is originally from Sudbury, Mass. and graduated from Dana Hall School (Wellesley, Mass.) in 2000. Fitzgerald is also a member of Endicott’s Admission Staff, as an Assistant Director of Admis-sion. She currently resides in Boston, Mass.
