ENDICOTT COLLEGE

GULLS

2011 women’s’lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team has been a consistent force in the New England region over the past half-decade. Despite five consecutive conference championships and five straight NCAA Division III Tourna-ment appearances, a postseason win has remained elusive for the Gulls. Reigning The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Coach of the Year, Meghan Fitzgerald hopes the 2011 squad, ripe with veterans at every position, will be the team to finally make a splash on the national stage.

The 2010 campaign ended in similar fashion to those of the previous four years – a conference crown and first round exit from the NCAA Tourna-ment. The Gulls were forced to travel across the country to Claremont, California where they were ousted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 21-18, in early May. With the return of Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.), the team’s leading goal scorer, and Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine), who started every game in net, the Blue and Green will look to continue their winning ways and improve on an already notable resumé.

Fitzgerald, who enters her third season at the helm, will have to replace a pair of prominent offensive forces in Valerie Feldman (Albany, N.Y.) and Kristen Micho (Syracuse, N.Y.). Feldman led the team in points with 106 and was a First Team All-Conference selection, while Micho finished third on the team in scoring with 57 goals en route to Second Team accolades.

Much of that task falls to DeShaw, who netted 62 goals to go along with 24 assists en route to First Team All-TCCC honors as a sophomore. She emerged last season as one of the conference’s most prolific scorers and will be relied upon to do more of the same as a junior co-captain.

Fellow co-captains Molly Sowles (Yarmouth, Maine) and Brittany Kane (Scarborough, Maine) headline a group of seniors that are on pace to graduate as the winningest class in program history. Sowles joins DeShaw on the attack and will look to serve as an offensive playmaker. Kane started every game last year and returns to anchor an Endicott defense which lost two key play-ers to graduation in Kendahl Light (South Hero, Vt.) and Lauren Carelli (Hollis, N.H.).

Neff’s goals against average dropped from 11.3 as a freshman to 9.1 as a sophomore, culminating in Second Team All-TCCC accolades at season’s end. This year’s squad also benefits from the arrival of freshman Rachel Socolow (Westford, Mass.) as a viable backup.

Senior Kellie Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) is perhaps the team’s top all-around threat and can be found covering every inch of the field. Cunningham finished with 34 points last year and was third on the team in ground balls (49) and draw controls (39). Classmate Carin Czerniawski (Monroe, Conn.) returns after leading the 2010 squad with 59 ground balls and finishing second in caused turnovers with 24. Situated as a defensive midfielder last year, Czerniawski will look to capitalize on increased opportunities on the attack in her final season.

Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.), who started 20 games as a sophomore and finished with six goals and seven assists, will continue to serve as a vocal leader in the midfield. Sophomore Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) also earned 20 starts, recording 41 ground balls and 21 draw controls in her first season. Loizzo and Todd join Cunningham and Czerniawski to make up a mid-field with big-game experience.

Sophomore Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) enjoyed a stellar freshman season in which she scored 29 goals. Davis came into her own late in the season, scoring 11 goals in the final four games, and will look to carry the momentum into 2011.

Sophomore Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) was second among freshman in scoring with 18 goals. Competing alongside Tierney for a starting role in Endicott’s attack this year will be senior Brooke Neu-man (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomores Meghann Mellen (Londonderry, N.H.) and Caitlin Pratt (Bow. N.H.). Neuman scored a career-high six goals as junior while Mel-len and Pratt added six and four, respec-tively.

Sophomores Gabrielle Boyle (Hingham, Mass.) and Stacia Geno (White River Junc-tion, Vt.) as well as junior Devin Tentindo (Stratham, N.H.) will see an increased role on the defensive unit in 2011.

Kelsey Barnes (Brookside, N.J.) headlines a freshman class that provides depth at every position. Barnes will compete for minutes on defense while Callie Murphy

(Woburn, Mass.) and Kylie Ross (Cumber-land, Maine) vie for spots in the midfield. Fellow newcomer Brooke Worcester (Kennebunk, Maine) provides more sup-port for the conference’s top offense.

Endicott pairs its conference slate with a challenging non-conference schedule against nationally-ranked opponents from throughout the region. Babson, Bowdoin, Tufts and Trinity each finished inside the top-20 last year and are once again ranked to start the 2011 campaign. The Gulls, who have not lost a conference game since the 2007 season, will be tested by some of the TCCC’s best when they are forced to take on Roger Williams, Western New England, and Gordon on the road. Endicott will rely on a core group of players who have expe-rienced success in the past as they pursue their sixth straight conference champion-ship.

Meghan Fitzgerald - Head CoachHead coach Meghan Fitzgerald enters her third year as head women’s lacrosse coach at Endicott. Fitzgerald

found immediate success in Beverly, leading the Gulls to a pair of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) championships in her first two years at the helm. During that time Endicott has amassed a 31-10 record, including a perfect 20-0 in conference play, and made a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.

Last season, Endicott won its fifth straight conference crown and finished the season 16-5 overall. For the third consecutive season, and second straight under Fitzgerald, the Gulls boasted a spotless conference record (11-0). Fitzgerald earned TCCC Coach of the Year honors after guiding Endicott to 13-4 record during the regular season. Six of her players garnered all-conference honors highlighted by a pair of first team selections.

In 2009, the Blue and Green finished 15-5 overall and 9-0 in the conference en route to the program’s fourth-consecutive TCCC Championship. Seven Gulls earned postseason honors including seven all-conference nods and a pair of all-region selections.

Fitzgerald arrived at Endicott from Division II Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass. where she served as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach for four seasons, working primarily with the defensive unit. During her time at Stonehill, the coaching staff held an overall record of 69 wins and 8 losses. In addition, the Skyhawks were undefeated in the Northeast-10 Conference and captured the Conference Champion-ship each year. The Skyhawks earned berths to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2007 – winning the NCAA Division II National Champion-ship in 2005. In addition to her coaching duties at Stonehill, she also worked in the Office of Admission as a Senior Admission Counselor.

A 2004 graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., Fitzgerald was a three-year starter on the William Smith lacrosse team under head coach Pat Genovese. During her four-year playing career, the Herons earned NCAA tournament berths in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Fitzgerald was named to the 2003 NCAA All-Tournament Team for her efforts in the NCAA semifinals. In 2004, she was named to the IWLCA All-New York Region Second Team and the NYSWCAA All-State Second Team. Currently, Fitzgerald serves on the IWLCA All-Pilgrim Region selection committee.

Fitzgerald earned a B.A. in Public Policy from William Smith College in 2004. She is originally from Sudbury, Mass. and graduated from Dana Hall School (Wellesley, Mass.) in 2000. Fitzgerald is also a member of Endicott’s Admission Staff, working as an Assistant Director of Admission. She currently resides in Boston, Mass.
