Washington, D.C.The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Refl ecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

American University

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fi elds. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

Academic Support

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

“I am very excited to have Kelly as a part of our lacrosse program,” commented Head Coach Katie Woods. “I think she’s going to be a great coach and teacher. She has tremendous energy on the fi eld and will help take our defense to a new level.”

The American University women’s lacrosse team looks for a bounceback season in 2010, as the Eagles return 19 letterwinners from last season, as well as six starters. AU will also have the services of two returning All-Patriot League selections from a year ago, seniors Alyssa Romano and Amanda Makoid. American will also welcome eight freshmen to the squad for the 2010 season, many of whom should make an immediate impact on the program. The 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year Katie Woods begins her fourth season at the helm. She is joined by fi rst-year assistant coach Kelly Munroe, an All-American lacrosse student-athlete during her playing days at Boston University.

The AttackAfter sitting out the 2009 season due to injury, senior Lisa Schaaf will be back in the lineup and her presence should make an immediate impact, especially on the attacking unit for the Eagles. Additionally, sophomore Lauren Schoenberger had a breakout freshman season in 2009, as she fi nished third on the team in both goals (19) and points (23). Sophomore Emily Reichard, along with freshmen Kimberly Collins, Laura Jernegan and Chiara Speziale should also be key contributors up front for American.

The Midfi eldThe midfi eld will be a strength for American, as a number of key players from the 2009 season return to the lineup. The Eagles will be led by Makoid, who fi nished second on the team in both goals (25) and points (30) in 2009. The 2009 All-Patriot League Second Team selection recorded a team-high fi ve assists for American, while making a key impact on the defensive unit. She also fi nished the season with a team-high 32 draw controls. Senior Maeve Koch and junior Brit Ferguson played in all 16 games in 2009, and both should be key fi gures in the midfi eld for the Eagles this season. Additionally, sophomore Bernadette Maher scored 13 goals in 2009, while classmates Emma Larkin, Paige Lin and Emily Stankiewicz all played key minutes last season and should have important roles in 2010. Finally, the Eagles welcome a crop of new talent to the mix, including freshmen Emily Burton, Samantha Marshall and Eliza Morgan.

The DefenseThe defensive unit will be spearheaded by Romano, as she is the most veteran player returning on the unit for the Eagles. The 2009 All-Patriot League Second Team pick led the Eagles with 24 caused turnovers last season. Juniors Erin McDevitt and Maggie McEvoy, as well as sophomores Jordan Allen and Bayley McDonough, will compete for key roles in 2010. Additionally, the freshmen combination of Kelsey Beck and Laura Dawson will have the opportunity to earn playing time for the Eagles.

The GoalkeepersThe Eagles return both goalkeepers from the 2009 position. Senior Frankie Solomon and sophomore Kaska Komosinski each had moments to shine in 2009, as they both played crucial minutes between the pipes. Solomon played in all 16 games, including 14 starts, while Komosinski saw action in 10 contests.

Dr. Kerwin also advanced major efforts to support faculty scholarship, teaching, service, and diversity; bring faculty salaries to the AAUP–Level 1 standard; and develop plans for assessing student learning.

A professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs, Dr. Kerwin is a nationally recognized specialist in public policy, with emphasis on the regulatory process. He teaches courses in administrative process, policy implementation, and American government and is actively engaged in research.
